Thai police arrest man after babies' bodies found roasted, wrapped in gold leaf

Thai police arrested a British man Friday after discovering six human babies which had been roasted and wrapped in gold leaf in preparation for a type of black magic ritual, according to reports.

Police said Friday that they found the corpses packed into suitcases in Bangkok's Chinatown on Thursday, the AFP news agency reported. Chow Hok Kuen, a British citizen born in Hong Kong of Taiwanese parents, was being held for possession of human remains.

Kuen had reportedly bought the corpses several days before for 200,000 baht ($6,400) and planned to smuggle them into Taiwan. It was not reported where he bought them, but police speculated it was in Thailand.

Although some media reports indicated that the bodies were fetuses, Wiwat Kumchumnan of Bangkok police's children and women protection unit told Reuters that the bodies were of children "between the ages of two and seven months. Some were found covered in gold leaf."

2,000 fetuses discovered at Bangkok temple

Kamchamnan told the AFP that Kuen planned to sell the corpses to "clients who believe they will make them lucky and rich."

He faces a fine of 2,000 baht ($64) and up to one year in prison.

Kuen was staying at a hotel in Khao San Road, Bangkok's backpacker area, but that the bodies were found in a separate hotel.

Police had received a tip-off that infant corpses were being offered to wealthy clients through a website advertising black magic services.

Black magic rituals are still practiced in Thailand, where street-side fortune tellers offer ceremonies to reverse bad luck. According to reports, the ritual of enshrining fetuses is practiced in some Chinese communities.

Reuters contributed to this report.

I agree the fine was unexpectedly low, but killing him? Since he didn't kill the babies himself, I believe that would be overkill (pardon the pun).

amietamant, I don't know what could possibly be absurd about believing that a dead baby wrapped in gold foilwould bring luck. Seems perfectly reasonable to me... sheesh.

What a pathetic human being. Even if he had nothing to do with their deaths, he should fined thousands and serve a few years for propagating this kind of stupidity. The "people" at each end of this supply chain should be executed if these were live children.

Why are you jumping to conclusions with so little information? A lot of babies, infants and children die in third world countries. There are a lot of miscarriages as well. If they already died, perhaps the corpses were sold by the family so they could make a little money to live?

Just another side of the story to think about.

I'd also be willing to bet that "roasted" is being used for shock value. More likely, they were dehydrated as a form of mummification.

"People who believe absurdities will commit atrocities." Black magic, superstitions, gods, religions -- no difference.

amietamant, your claim is flawed on multiple accounts.

1. The way the quote is worded implies the negative, meaning that those that don't believe absurdities will not commit atrocities. That's just naive.

2. Your inclusion of people who believe in a higher power or follow a religion with this assumption notions that they will ultimately commit an atrocity such as this. There are numerous examples of people that would refute this, Mother Teresa being one, with her extremely humanitarian acts. This way of thinking is simply ignorant.

3. Your extension combined with the implied negative presumes that people who don't believe in god or religion do not commit atrocities--simply put, saying that throughout history none of the rapes, murders, kidnappings, etc. were committed by any atheist whatsoever. That's just silly.

In a few decades lots of folks will go 'canabal' not out of superstition, but out of hunger... there are way too many humans breeding like rabbits - population growth worldwide is not sustainable.

It won't make them 'lucky' and 'rich', but rather will garner them a stint of being locked up and a monetary fine.

I thought Taiwan had a fairly well educated population. I wouldn't expect the younger generation to believe in this nonsense. This must be for some old superstitious die hards with money.

        Not so strange...

China will investigate South Korean claims that the country is the source of smuggled capsules made from human flesh, but said it had found no such evidence yet, Chinese state media said Wednesday. Article dtd - 9/05/2012

The gruesome practice came to light Sunday when Korea Customs said it had found 35 attempts to import from China 17,451 capsules containing the powdered flesh of dead babies, taken as a disease cure or to boost sexual performance... see http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/world/292519/china-to-probe-human-flesh-pills-claims-media

I thought David Koresh and Bin Laden were dead? I agree all sick minded people that think that killing someone else somehow brings them closer to their god is SICK. I for one respect all religions as far as everyone ha sthe right to choose their own beleif. Religion however was meant to honor and protect life. It's amazing that the extremes of how one's perception can become so ridicules. I guess this brings new light on how to take sides on whether your pro-choice or pro-life. I've always thought of myself pro-life because I feel I'm not the judge to determine someone else's fate, that's it on that subject. This only strenghthens my position.

Sexual predators get more time in jail than one year. Have autopsys preformed on the remains of the children see if forensic pathologists can determine cause of death. Obviously a strange process to determine the punnishment phase of such a hanous issue. It will most likely be dificult to determine cause of death due to roasting but it's worth a try, examine intestinal pathology.
