Lockerbie bomber al-Megrahi dies in Libya after long battle with cancer

Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, the man convicted of blowing up Pan Am Flight 103 over Scotland, died after a long illness. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

Updated at 3:30 p.m. ET: TRIPOLI - The former Libyan intelligence officer convicted of the 1988 Lockerbie bombing that killed 270 people has died, his son told NBC News on Sunday. He was 60.

Abdel Baset al-Megrahi died at home after his health quickly deteriorated. "He has been suffering from cancer for a long time and God choose him," Khalid al-Magrahi told NBC.

"He was too sick to utter anything on his death bed," his brother Abdel Hakim told Reuters. "Just because Abdel Baset is dead doesn't mean the past is now erased. We will always tell the world that my brother was innocent.''

Al-Megrahi was convicted in 2001 of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 as it flew to New York from London. All 259 people aboard the airliner were killed and 11 others on the ground in the town of Lockerbie, Scotland, died from falling wreckage.

Scotland freed him in 2009 on compassionate grounds because he was suffering from advanced terminal prostate cancer and thought to have months to live.

Convicted Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi speaks during an interview at his home in Tripoli on Oct. 3, 2011. He was transferred to hospital on April 13, 2012 after his health deteriorated quickly.

His release angered many relatives of the victims, 189 of whom were American, and the Obama administration criticized the decision.

Many speculated that a backdoor deal had been cut between the former regime of Moammar Gadhafi and the British government. With the fall of the Gadhafi regime in 2011, many in the U.S. and U.K. called on the new Libyan leaders to extradite Megrahi to serve out the remainder of his prison term, something Libya's ruling National Transitional Council refused to do.

The family of convicted Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi tell NBC News that he is in a coma, without medicine and near death. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

Al-Megrahi, who served as an intelligence agent during the rule of Gadhafi, denied any role in suspected human rights abuses in his home country before Gadhafi's fall and death in a popular uprising last year.

In April, al-Megrahi's condition worsened and he was taken to a private hospital to receive a transfusion of eleven liters of blood, but subsequently felt strong enough to return home.

Megrahi's older brother, Mohamed, said the funeral will be after the noon prayer on Monday. He will be buried in Al Zagawani cemetary in Janzour, 12 miles west of Tripoli. Megrahi's house was filled Sunday with family members, relatives and neighbors paying condolences, NBC News reported.

The White House said that the death would not end the quest for justice for the families of the 270 people killed.

"Megrahi's death concludes an unfortunate chapter following his release from prison in 2009 on medical grounds - a move we strongly opposed,'' said White House National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor.

"We want to see justice for the victims of the Lockerbie bombing and their families. We will continue working with our new partners in Libya toward a full accounting of Gadhafi's horrific acts,'' Vietor said.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer on Sunday criticized the Scottish government for allowing al-Megrahi to die a free man in what he said "smelled of a deal for oil.''

Schumer, a New York Democrat, said on CNN that the death of al-Megrahi meant the full truth about the Pan Am bombing may never be known.

"Both the Scottish and British governments have not been forthcoming,'' Schumer said. "The whole deal smelled of a deal for oil for this man's freedom and that was almost blasphemy given what a horrible person he was and the terrible destruction and tragedy that he caused. I don't know if we'll ever get to the bottom of it now.''

British Prime Minister David Cameron, who was in opposition when al-Megrahi was freed, said in Chicago, where he was attending the NATO summit: "I've always been clear he should never have been released from prison.

''Today is a day to remember the 270 people who lost their lives in what was an appalling terrorist act. Our thoughts should be with them and their families for the suffering they've had."

Jim Swire, the father of one of the British Lockerbie victims, said he was convinced al-Megrahi was innocent.

''I've been satisfied for some years that this man had nothing to do with the murder of my daughter and I grit my teeth every time I hear newscasters say 'Lockerbie bomber has died,'" he told BBC News television. ''This is a sad day."

The Scottish Parliment, after reviewing all the evidence post conviction, proved this man and Libya was not responsible for the bombing. Look it up folks and you'll know the people who actually did it were not libyan.

This is why he was released. The British had nothing to do with it, other than conspiring with Reagan to cover up the real perpetrators. The REAL injustice here is the families still don't know who really did it. This is all well documented fact.

I don't. Read the details of the case. More than likely this guy was a scape goat and had nothing to do with it. The prime witness who testified against him later came out and in an affidavit admitted he lied in court stole evidence and planted it. The Scotts released him because they knew he was innocent. The compassionate grounds thing was just a cover story. I mean come on, no one is going to release a terrorist who killed 270 people even if they do have caner.

FedupwithFed,

Don't be so quick. If you are so absolutely sure that Muslims are wrong about Allah and their waiting virgins, how can you be so sure about heaven and hell?

You can't, because there is not a single molecule of real evidence for either. The existence of your god or Allah's gift of virgins is in the exact same category as the Tooth Ferry, Santa Clause, Sasquatch, UFO's and leprechauns.

I agree, Bill. We have all heard the stories from people who had near-death experiences, i.e., the long tunnel, the light at the end, seeing dead relatives, etc. I would love to hear a story from a Muslim, Buddhist, or any other non-Christian, who had a near-death experience to find out whether their experience was the same or whether their own near-death experience was more in keeping with their belief system. It would be interesting.

As for this guy, good riddance. The world is a better place without him. My thoughts today will be with his victims, not with him.

Thanks, NOT, BP, for bribing a Scottish judge to release this murderer from jail, so you could get oil deals with Ghaddaffi. The only justice to this story is the revolution that F'd BP.

I know people hate big oil, and companies like Exxon and Chevron have no clean hands. But American oil companies, when compared to BP and Shell, actually look like saints. Because that is exactly how bad those companies are.

I, personallly would prefer a couple of instants of terrror to six months of agony, with the certain knowledge that I wasn't going to get better. Of course, alll I have is my personal experience with cancer to inform me, having never been in a plane crash.

My initial reaction to this man's described acts is visceral. However, I do believe there is no man God cannot forgive. Including Bin Laden, Hitler, and Mao. I cannot speak for God, but I assume these men are not much worse in His eyes, than the rest of us. Though it is hard to do, I don't wish for eternal torment on these people, nor do I believe in eternal torment (though I do believe in some form of punishment). While I am still working out my theology, I think its possible that one day all men will be made alive, and made perfect in God's image, and will be literal gods in a new heaven placed on earth.

I don't mind if you think I'm deluded. Time will tell the truth. Good day, kind internet persons!

Religion is a touchy subject at best. The questions of Heaven and Hell, Virgins, God, Allah, and countless other "Gods" will be debated for as long as man inhabits the Earth.

I get that. I also understand that to question, or seek knowledge is in our nature.

At the very least, the end of his life was filled with pain, agony and suffering. Nothing could be done to stop it as it worsened every minute. He didn't even have the consolation of being able to appease the god for which he murdered hundreds of people. Sometimes justice comes, and in a most appropriate way.

News flash for you David-3783221. The greatest threat to freedom and world peace today is the Islamic fundamentalism of which Libya is a part of! You should be thankful that Reagan was president and set in place policies that resulted in a series of reversals, both military and economic for the Soviet Union. Today, they are laughing at us embarking on suicidal demilitarization but it’s not the first time America was caught napping in the midst of imminent threat to security and stability coming from the Middle East.

The divide between radical islam and the industrial democracies will become the most destabilizing factor in world affairs yet we are told to “tolerate and embrace islam” by Obama and the liberal media. Radical islam is a force more explosive and dangerous than simple totalitarianism, Marxism-Leninism or Nazism.

The movements goal is to unite all of the Islamic nations under the leadership of a coalition lead by Iran and Syria. They see themselves as the pure expression of the real meaning of the Quran. Their first declared effort is to focus on driving the west out of the middle east, then to destroy Israel, liberate Palestine and reestablish muslim authority over holy Jerusalem. The final goal is to replace the Judeo-Christian world order with muslim based world order. Islam has replaced Marxism as the number one ideology and power in the world to destroy western civilization.

You do realize that when you buy Chevron, the crude may have originated from Shell, don't you? Or Texaco from BP? Or any brand from any company? The company that drills the crude has nothing to do with where the finished product ends up. Boycotting Shell stations will not stop Shell drilling, same as BP or any other company.

Then perhaps he would have come closer to the suffering he caused some many others. Well, if people are right in their accounts of near death experiences, instead of getting 72 virgins, he'll get a nice lovely life review, where he gets to experience first hand everything each and every victim of his acts experienced, along with a rendition of his acts.... He'd get to feel it all. Would be fitting, along with the poetic justice he got in the end, with the cancer he died from. This world is better off with one less person like that walking around and creating their own brand of hell on Earth which his terrorist activities brought about....

Good news also, the ring leader, namely Gadafhi behind all that, has also been served justice for his involvement in his 40+ years of all of this (and more) as well....

          #1.59 - Sun May 20, 2012 8:21 PM EDT

Linda King, one thing the UK found out a fair while ago (think many decades to century) is that one of the more horrific things in the eyes of these people would be if the bullets used were dipped in pigs blood before being shot at them. This is because pork is considered very unclean in the Muslim faith, and though they have this whole belief of 72 virgins and what not, if they die while their bodies are polluted by non-kosher stuff....

If the hospital quite visably force fed bacon to him, or injected him with bacon grease, that would certainly have got his attention /rofl By his own beliefs, the hopes for the 72 virgins would fall to the way side due to the presence of pork in his system on his death bed, etc....

Sadly, they were not. He was a national hero there and they made sure he was well drugged up. That is what hospice is all about. Generally, terminally ill people die from an overdose just before the cancer kills them.

            Cancer kills viciously

            Overdose kills blissfully

However, I completely approve of his death. I don't believe in heaven or hell. But on the of chance I'm wrong, I'm confident he gets sorted out appropriately.

Bill in Mill Creek- ever read Pascal's Wager? If you're not sure of a heaven and hell, or God, it's a safer bet to accept the premise of God and heaven and hell. If you're right you escape an eternity of suffering. If you're wrong you will never know it. However if you accept that there is no God or heaven and hell and you're wrong, you will spend an eternity knowing you were wrong.

lance - I had never heard the word plonker before but I knew it had to be English and not too complimentary. I looked it up and it's a great word. Kind of like putz in Yiddish. Thanks for the addition to my vernacular.

Now putz I had not heard of, though yutz I had.... I wonder which would be more deragatory here....

                    #8.3 - Sun May 20, 2012 8:38 PM EDT

Putz is more derogatory. Look in up on Google. It is pretty much the same as plonker. It has evolved over time but is pretty much the same thing. My Mom is Jewish and she reserved the word to either end a heated conversation or as a description of someone she found to be too stupid for words.

For his matter to end up becomming part of a pig, would be a big insult in his beliefs... Pigs are afterall considered "unclean" animals. Course, too bad that in actuality, whatever happens to our carcass, and hell our waste matter while we're still alive, tends to get recycled through nature many times over. Moral of the story, there's nothing to prevent the CO2 and water vapor we exhale from being taken up by the plants that the pigs eat, an so to become part of a pig anyhow :p

Course, if this doofus is buried rather then cremated, he might become part of a fungus before all of that :o But if they do cremate him, if only we could get his ashes spread into the ground of a pig pen. This way we can assure the pigs get to wallow in it all :d

The hate that resonates from this person making that statement is no different than the hate this man who died for people different than himself. They don't have tolerance for diversity because they expect everyone to think as he does to please him/her. They don't have the mental capability of seeking his/her own happiness. For if he/she did they would actually see diversity for what it truly is.......a blessing.

Love isn't about destroying the things in life that you don't like. When you see things that you don't like ask yourself, what do I like? Make that your focus instead. That is what diversity is all about. It defines who you are as an individual. You can't seek happiness by putting people down, that is not love it is "hatred". We are here to evolve and create a better world for our children!!!!

He would have died where he should have died, and England-Scotland wouldn't have had to flip the bill for his last days medical treatment, living costs - but no, a vicious killer gets released because he is sick, and dies with family - disgusting.

Human kind will ALWAYS find a reason to hate. It is in our nature. Changing faiths, refusing a God, changing ideology, NONE of that will ever change the fact that mankind will fight amongst themselves over who is right and who is wrong.

If it isn't religion, it's politics. If it isn't politics, it's territory. If it isn't territory, it's butter side up or butter side down.

Stop thinking that people are inherently good, because they aren't.

Ruby, nice thinking, but unrealistic. It will take another several hundred or thousand years before humans evolve to that pattern of thought. There is too much hate everywhere in the world.

well said, twoifbytea, and so it is not life that is now the bitch, but him!

but it is actually 72, (there is a reason for that number in all holy books, by the way, having a similar meaning to 40) and apparently it is not 72 virgins, at all (not that many modern people at all understand the ancient word translated as 'virgin' which actually has little to do with previously having been 'done', but we digress) ...

72 white raisins ... wow! just imagine that! Paradise!

I have not met a infant or toddler yet that is innately evil.

If people didn't hate due to differences in religion, they'd hate because of differences in political ideology... They'd just find something else to hate on... And sadly, but toddlers can also pick on one another, start fights over "not fair, he got the bigger piece" or "he got more", etc... My sister's older son used to tease his younger brother when they were kids telling him all the Barney jokes like

I'd love you, in a stew, you'd taste great with barbeque

With some fries and cowlslaw on the side, I would like to eat your hide

And the younger brother would run in "mommy!" It's a sibling thing, and we all know it goes on in childhood, lol Just wait until they get to the first grade though, the kid with big ears will be called dumbo, and the kid with glasses four eyes... All out the mouths of our kids on the playground....

Perhaps if adults understood diversity and could get a grip of their emotions they could be examples to their children to follow.

Sorry, but how can someone feel any compassion for someone that murdered innocent people? I have ZERO sympathy for him. There is NO justifiable reason to murder people.

I wish I lived close to where they bury him. I will miss being able to visit his grave and piss all over it.

I sincerely hope and pray that his last days were filled with agonizing pain.

He is and always will remain a P.O.S.
