'Massacre': At least 90 killed as bomber targets military parade rehearsal in Yemen

A suicide bomber blew himself up at a military parade rehearsal in Yemen's capital, killing more than 90 soldiers. Msnbc.com's Dara Brown reports.

Updated at 12:20 p.m. ET: SANAA, Yemen  - A suicide bomber with explosives strapped under his uniform killed more than 90 people at a military parade rehearsal in the Yemeni capital Sanaa on Monday, an attack which will alarm Washington as its involvement in the front-line state deepens.

The bombing also wounded about 200 people, officials said, making it the bloodiest single incident in the city in recent years.

An al-Qaida source told the BBC that one of its own had carried out the attack.

Yemen's defense minister and chief of staff were both present at the rehearsal for Tuesday's National Day parade but neither was hurt. A police source said he could not rule out the bombing was an attempt to assassinate them.

Weakened by an uprising that eventually toppled former leader Ali Abdullah Saleh, Yemen's government has lost control over whole swathes of the country, allowing militants to overrun several towns in the southern province of Abyan.

The attack, along with an ambush on Sunday on a U.S. military training team in the south of the country, indicated their campaign could be entering a dangerous new stage. Troops closed in on a militant strongholds on Sunday in heavy fighting.

More than 30 Yemeni troops killed in militant attack

A U.S. military instructor was seriously wounded in Sunday's ambush, which was claimed by militant group Ansar al-Sharia (Partisans of Islamic Law), which is affiliated to al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).

The United States sees Yemen as a vital front in its global war on Islamic militants and is increasing its military support for the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

Carnage
The explosion in Sanaa's Sabaeen Square left scenes of carnage, with bloodied victims and body parts strewn across the 10-lane road where the rehearsal was held on Monday morning, not far from the presidential palace.

The defense ministry said at least 90 soldiers were killed and 222 wounded.

Police collect evidence after a suicide bombing at a parade ground in Sanaa, Yemen, on Monday.

"We had just finished the parade. We were saluting our commander when a huge explosion went off," said soldier Amr Habib. "It was a gruesome attack. Many soldiers were killed and others had their arms and legs blown off."

'Puppet' and 'Stooge': al-Qaida chief al-Zawahiri issues message on Yemen

Another soldier told the Associated Press: "This is a real massacre. There are piles of torn body parts, limbs and heads. This is unbelievable."

One investigator said preliminary findings suggested the suicide bomber was a rogue soldier rather than a man in a disguise.

"The suicide bomber was dressed in a military uniform. He had a belt of explosives underneath," said a man who identified himself as Colonel Amin al-Alghabati, his hands and uniform flecked with blood.

The usual security procedure for such an event would involve checks being made on the soldiers at their bases before they are transported to the site of the parade in army vehicles.

The wounded were ferried to hospital in taxis.

Hospitals overwhelmed
"Most of the injuries are to the head, we have dozens paralyzed. We expect the death toll to rise. Most of the injured here are boys in their teens. Sanaa's hospitals are overwhelmed," said doctor Mohsen al-Dhahari.

In response to days of violence, Hadi fired two senior commanders and allies of his predecessor Saleh, who he replaced in February.

One of them, Yahya Saleh, the former president's nephew, was the head of national security, an intelligence gathering unit that works closely with the CIA. Most of those hurt were from this unit, the BBC reported.

Report: Al-Qaida doctors trained to implant bombs in humans

Yemen has seen a spate of deadly attacks since Hadi took office saying he would extinguish an Islamist insurgency, which until now has been concentrated in the south.

The parade was scheduled for Tuesday to mark the unification of north and south Yemen, previously separate states, which were merged in 1990.

Yemen has "good" Islamic militants: al-Qaida. So they are doing right thing.

al-Qaida should blow up the Presidential Palace instead of these small "love" and "peace" acts.

What would you expect from the religion of peace?

I think I'll go along and get started with my day. I don't care if these sand-n*ggers want to blow themselves up as long as they keep it on their side of the world.

Actually this may be a good, albeit tragic thing. This attack has increased the outrage against the terrorists in the area. Since they dont have us to do the fighting they will have to stand up for theirselves and fight their own war.

And that is our greatest result of the last 10 years, that we are so tired of this silliness that we just stand back and let the Middle East destroy itself.

What should we do MUGTECH? Send in the troops and get into a pointless conflict with a nation full of people that do not understand what "country" means? I spent 2 years of my life in that miserable place and they are all the same. While I dont fault the people, it's not in their way to be a country. They are more loyal to clans and tribes than to the country. Nationalism is not a word they understand there. If you have any bright ideas please let us in on the secret, but I for one am tired of us sending money and assistance into the black hole that is the middle east.

Seems to me, MORE attacks have occurred since the killing of bin laden, than before.

logoslogic:

That is a really ignorant thing to say. They were having a parade and someone blew himself up and took a lot of people with him. Instead of blaming the religion, how about blaming the person who did it? The religious book didn't blow people up, it's an individual's interpretation of the book that caused the tragedy.

The Bible didn't blow people up, it was Eric Rudolph and Tim McVeigh who interpreted the bible the wrong way that caused the loss of life. The Bible isn't causing the child soldier situation in the DRC, it's Joseph Kony's interpretation of it that is causing the tragedy.

It's what you do that matters, not whose name you do it in.

Ah yes, another result of the "arab spring" Obama praised. Seems every place this happened there is now caos, bombs and more uprisings. Keep our foreign aid here, leave any immigrants there, no more H1b's from these countries. Take care of our own people and country. Look around here and you'll find many who would do the same. Enough!

We already have military trainers on the ground in Yemen, how long can it be before we start sending troops in. My guess is it will not happen until after the election at the earliest. There is no way that Obama is going to start sending combat troops to another Middle Eastern country before the election, his polls tell him it would cost him too many votes. It does not matter how many people get killed, Obama will stay on the sidelines for now. I am not saying that we should or should not get involved, just pointing out the political reality of the situation. Knowing the way our leaders think, we will eventually take action in Yemen, whether it is under the UN or NATO banner remains to be seen. The big problem that prevents us from completely ignoring what goes on in Yemen is it's strategic location at the straights connecting the Red Sea to the Arabian Sea. This is a critical shipping lane that must be protected. Allowing Yemen to fall into the type of chaos that currently exists in Somalia could have serious consequences for the global economy if the security of that shipping lane were to be jeopardized.

I say we fence the entire middle east in, drop huge caches of weapons and explosives in a few key spots. Wire the place for sound with cameras and satellite cams. Then just make it a day by day pay per view! We could use it the funds made to help pay down the debt? I mean c'mon..it would be much more entertaining than watching the Kardashian's or Swamp People!

Al Qaeda in Yemen has nothing to do with the Arab Spring - so all those who are making that connection need to bone up on your current events. AQ in the Arabian Peninsula has been around since at least 2000. Do any of you remember the Cole bombing? I'm pretty sure that was before the Arab Spring.

Yes there is the danger of radical groups taking advantage of the uprisings to consolidate power, but what are people supposed to do, just live under tyranny for the rest of their lives because radicals might take over if they try for their freedom? We are a free democratic nation. Of course our President is going to support those around the world who seek their freedom. I guess some of us are just too divisive and will use any opportunity to cynically take a swipe at their political rivals for things they know nothing about.

There are over 90 human beings DEAD... I wonder how many died in Syria today fighting for their freedoms?

I am thankful that I do not get grouped in or stereotyped like all the Christians in the U.S do. I bet there are Jewish people that are thankful they do not get grouped in with the Zionists. I am thankful that I do not get grouped in with the other "stupid" Americans.

To bad according to some here that all the 1.5 billion Muslims on this planet are all EXACTLY alike, and they all think EXACTLY the same way about peace. How about Catholicism, that must be the religion of child molesters to you huh?

I wonder what is at the heart of this all? Could it be economic inequality? Why yes it could be. It is the same thing that is happening in this country. People are tired of being slaves earning 100 times less then their masters. Only you are dumb enough to think people will work for 100 times less then they are worth and be happy about it.

Surefirepython.... hell no! I haven't watched that movie! I came up with this idea along time ago. Not the first time I've posted it. I think it's pretty legit idea. I mean, these guys are savages over there. If they weren't focused on killing us, they are killing each other. they don't even limit it to different countires, they even go after different sects within the same religion. Might as well capitilize on the situation, right? They have been, and will continue, to kill each other until the world ends. They are just monkeys with guns. Think of it as a documentary with a pay per view slant.

Regarding the Arab Spring, according to my recollection one of the justifcations given for our invasion of Iraq was that it would promote a wave of democracy which would sweep the Middle East. Of course it did no such thing. I find it ironic that the actual wave of democracy currently sweeping the Middle East was ignited in Tunisia by the release of US diplomatic cables on Wiki-Leaks documenting the corruption of the then-current Tunisian government. And you know how we are dealing with those responsible for that (i.e Bradly Manning & Julian Assange).

MSNBC has to be polite rather than plainly honest, so these are good information sources on terror in the Middle East, thanks.

JihadWatch.com is on Homeland Security's list of websites they monitor for would-be terrorists. So be careful when you visit the site, if DHS thinks there are terrorists on there, it's a good chance there are and you might 'meet' some of them. Or that one could hijack your email or hack your computer for their own ends and get you blamed for whatever they do....

Civilized is fun, and all, but we will be gone if we fail to respond to attacks. We would have killed NONE if they could just act as respectable world citizens and stop murdering innocent non-combatants. Hank, body count isn't the point. The point is we WILL come and go in the world and our own country as we wish without being murdered. If that isn't possible, somebody will prevail, and it isn't going to be them. We don't need their permission, and I'd be amused to have you review the "civility" of Islam. If you don't like America, and if you are willing to risk air travel....by all means choose a nice civilized country that meets your stringent specifications and move there post haste.

Dhound~ Did you read it in context or simply what he typed? He was referring to a comment Hank made about us going to war. Since Hank's comment didn't revolve around any specific country then the response that Steve made, unless he indicated different (which he didn't), doesn't either. This would mean that Hank, hince Steve, also included Iraq and that war.

Then again this is just basic reading. I can't expect everyone to understand. Hell, English is one of the hardest languages to learn. Even if it's the only language you know.

If one indeed included Iraq then wouldn't my comment and question be correct if I simply based it off what Steve said in his response to Hank? Help me out here? Are you looking to just argue about something? If so that's fine but perhaps you should pick a comment that isn't accurate and go with that before one that is accurate.

Ever been to Yemen? I've been in the square/plaza were this happened. You can't expect Yemen to function like a wealthy western country. It is hardly a country at all, having many tribal factions, a Marxist/Capitalist split for years, followed by civil war. The country is one of the poorest in the world. Yemenis have had a great sense of humor through it all, and are coping with a great many things.

Of course its easy from your comfortable chair in the West.

Like Geert Wilders of Holland proclaims, Islam is a political party similar to Communism, Nazism and other radical, fanatical political organizations that control their members totally, even with death threats if they decide to leave. You can't eat sand and with a high birth rate they are pushing themselves into any country that will allow them and city, state and the federal government are doing whatever they can to assist them. You lose your common sense after elected or on government payroll maybe.

Bimbo: Muslims have to kill somebody.

If they get infidels, they kill them using Islamic grinders.

If Muslim majority nations, they classify some group as "infidels". They have to eliminate them using the same Islamic grinders.

Which is better: if they kill each other or kill you and I?

We've had Muslims in our country for 200+ years and 9-11 was the first mass attack on us from Muslim extremists. That should tell you right there that the majority of them are peaceful and just want to be left alone. Al-Quaeda didn't spring into existence until the mid 80s or 90's or sometime thereabouts and nothing happened till 9-11. If it took them that long to coordinate something like that, how long is it going to take them to coordinate something like that again? Especially with our heightened security?

There are Christian extremists (the Westboro Baptist folks come to mind) Jewish extremists, Buddhist extremists, Muslim extremists, heck there are even extremists in Wicca, my belief system. What are we going to do, outlaw all religions in the world because they have extremist sects? That would be neither feasible nor practical.

The more hate you put out, the more hate you will get back. The person you are determines the world you live in. So with that in mind, wouldn't the most logical solution be to 'stop hating'?

Don't confuse Islam with radical Islam. There is about as much difference there as between Christianity and the Spanish Inquisition.

When radical Muslims act, all other classifications (moderate, liberal, secular, ...) of Muslims are not visible.

This needs to stop. All this killing and hate. We have progressed as so much as species but for some reason we can't understand that we truly all do come from the same place. Were all connected to each other and nothing is worth killing another human being.

Good luck telling a muslim that. Muslims have not progressed since the 7th century. They seem to have gone backwards since then and are in the process of self destruction. It is ok if they destroy themselves but they seem to want to destroy others too while they go down.

The same could be said of some Christians--remember the Inquisition? An attempt to stop out the practitioners of my faith, and don't kid yourself that all Christians have progressed beyond it because I have people tell me I'm going to hell when I tell them I'm a practicing witch. In fact, I have had Christians Jews and Muslims all tell me I'm going to hell for being a witch. Do ALL of them tell me that? No, it's the attitudes of a few who reflect badly on the whole.

This is nuts, how can your relate murderous thugs killing in the name of their religion in the twenty first century to the middle age Inquisition.

How many Grand Inquisitors you have seen recently in your neighborhood?

Are member of the TSA harassing you in the Airport searching for the Crusades or the Grand Inquisitors?

Stop making up this tired and mindless excuses, we have seen them many time before and they have nothing to do with this idiot killing ninety of his comrades in the name of his Allah.

Result, now you have people who kill for no reason other than you do not agree with them. As some of the posters above have pointed out, islam is a cancer. And we all know that radiation is one of the effective treatments for cancers....Mecca would be a good point to apply the radiation source.

Government? If you haven't checked lately, our gubmint thinks Islamists are great people, just a little misunderstood - just like Major Nidal killing his fellow soldiers - just an argument over a crap game that got out of hand....and president Hussein thinks they are all peaceful loving people!

Nope, try that one somewhere else!

During a military parade rehearsal NOBODY NOTICED when an unidentified uniformed man mingled with the rest of the troops before blowing himself up. Does NOBODY in Muslim countries ever check the ID's or do a military or police ROLL CALL at official functions like this?

Easy for you to say in the west. Have you ever lived in a poor country... I mean dirt poor, like Yemen, D.R. Congo, Tadjikistan?

                                        I didn't think so.

It did say that it might have been a rogue soldier - thus, someone they recognized and thought was okay, not someone unidentified.

And that's why he was able to produce a full birth certificate showing his was born in Hawaii, one of the 50 states of America, and why he was talking positively about God and Jesus just this past Easter, yeah?

Not that a person has to be Christian to be president (it's simply a common preference). I also don't understand the American-born thing 100%, since there's plenty naturalized citizens who seem a lot brighter and more "American" than many American-born... I think what they might have been going for with that doesn't quite work out anymore...

In 1961 Barack Obama Sr. was of the "Race" referred to as Negro.

You do realize that there are a whole TWO Birth Certificates on the entire planet, that use AFRICAN to denote the "Race or Nationality" of someone.

...and both of them belong to Barack "Barry" Hussein Soetoro.
