UN nuclear chief: Deal reached with Iran over suspected weapons program

The chief of the U.N. nuclear agency said Tuesday that he had reached a deal with Iran on probing suspected work on nuclear weapons and the agreement would "be signed quite soon."

Yukiya Amano, of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said some details still needed to be worked out. But he told reporters that Iranian officials say that those will not stand in the way of signing the deal.

"(A) decision was made to conclude and sign the agreement ... I can say it will be signed quite soon," he said.

Amano spoke Tuesday on returning from Tehran, after talks on resuming a long-stalled probe into suspicions that Iran secretly worked on developing nuclear weapons.

Israeli military chief: I doubt Iran's 'rational' leadership will make nuclear bomb

The investigation has been stalled for more than four years, with Iran saying it has not carried out such experiments.

Clash with Iran could see use of huge, new U.S. bomb

Iran denies that it is interested in developing nuclear weapons, saying it wants nuclear power only to generate energy and for medical use.

Robert Wood, the acting U.S. envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency, said Tuesday that Iran should act swiftly to allow the IAEA to carry out its work.

"While we appreciate the efforts (by the IAEA) to conclude a substantive agreement, we remain concerned by the urgent obligation for Iran to take concrete steps to cooperate fully (with the agency)," Wood said.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

IAEA will monitor compliance just so US officials don't become confused again. Supposedly a deal is near with an economically sensitized leadership. Rather than slap dentures here, some of you might try aljazeera for another point of view.

I can't see trashing Iran right out of the gate - just like the US, the deeper the foot is in the mouth, the harder it is to hide.

US > Iran in anything descent and that matters.

You are welcome for some perspective.

For all the wrongs the US has committed, Iran is not an equal nation in any regard, until the current government is gone. This agreement is BS and I am just waiting for Israel to bomb their nuclear facilities.

Iranian should give up nuclear programs.

I have doubts Iranian mullahs will use their brains.

They will take a brick and claim: we have nukes!

They should buy "good" nukes from Pakis or N. Korea if non-Mullah Iranians have some brains!

Hmm we shall see the details of this.It must be without conditions.any time .any place and as long as necessary.NO "come back tomorow"" you can`t see this or that".If they want to avoid attack they have to do what Libya did.Abandon all nuke bomb work and enrichment above 5%.When the U.N gives a favourable report with proof then the world might listen. The inspections must start today.and for as long as necessary. If Iran is caught with their pants down the bombing of Iarn must start almost immediately. If they try anything funny after the inspectors leave..its bye bye Iran And yes! Iran is as bad as nazi Germany brainwashed finatic perverterd thugs..!!

This is just another of Iran's stalling tactics. How many times no have they signed agreements to allow inspections of their facilities only to g back on those agreements later when the IAEA tried to actually conduct visits. Until the Iranians actually allow the IAEA to walk into any of their facilities at any time without prior notice I will not believe a thing the Iranians say. It is really that simple. So long as they get away with their tactics of saying where the inspectors can visit and when or requiring advanced notice of inspections this will all be meaningless. All they will do is play a shell game with inspectors, moving the incriminating material around between sites as each prearranged visit occurs. The only reason that Iran is signing this agreement know is that they know the international community has had enough and is getting ready to authorize military action to put an end to their program. Once the tensions ease a little they will abrogate the agreement and continue with the work.

The Iranians claim that they are only interested in nuclear power and medical research, but this is refuted by their actions. Nuclear power plant only require uranium enriched to 3-5%. They continue to enrich uranium to 20% when they already have enough at that level to fuel their medical research reactor, the only one that needs this higher enrichment, many times over. They have installed a huge number of advanced centrifuges in their Fordo facility for the purposes of doing even more enrichment. The only purpose in stockpiling 20% enriched uranium is that it is the precursor to feed into the centrifuges to make highly enriched uranium, enriched to 90%, that is needed for nuclear weapons. By stockpiling 20% enriched uranium they are ensuring that they can rapidly produce large quantities of highly enriched uranium for weapons. This is the only logical reason for stockpiling uranium at this enrichment level since there is no other use for it once they had enough to fuel the research reactor. It is only a matter of time before the international community is forced to take out the Fordo facility, the other enrichment facility in Natanz, and all other nuclear research facilities in order to put an end to the Iranians covert weapons program.

Hmm, Is Iran a Sovereign nation or not? I mean if America can develop new nuclear weapons, new nuclear power plants, why can't Iran? Oh thats because the Jews rule the world and America. They tell the UN how high and when to jump. Israel got us into 9-11 or perhaps started it themselves. The Jews lied about Iraqs WMDs and got us into that war as well.

Iran can and should be allowed to do what it see's fit within its territorial borders, just as Israel is, Iraq is, Egypt, Russia, China, America, etc.. If we truly want Iran to be a good nation, we must set the example. We can't run around the world, selling nukes to Pakistan & India, Israel, while telling North Korea or Iran, sorry you can't have them.. Something doesn't jive, but you sheep keep drinking the kool-aid.

Let me paint this picture. What if China, Russia and the other members of the UN Security council, which we are apart of and have a major veto vote in, decided that the IAEA should be inspecting every location that we have any sort of nuclear material spread around this nation. What if the world wanted OUR 5000+ nuclear stockpile eliminated? We are scared of Iran maybe getting 1 nuclear device? Israel has 4, they are the biggest threat to the region. The others are just attempting to protecting themselves from the imperialist zionists of Israel.

America can't have her cake and eat it too.. Oh wait, yeah we can and we are getting fatter for it. We can't continue the paths we are on. We need to focus on OUR failing nation, let the world handle itself. We as a nation still haven't learned from 10,000 years of failed conquests and imperialistic history that trying to conquer the world, only makes you weaker at home. ALL the once great nations are now struggling to keep their heads above water. France, Germany, Greece, Russia, Egypt, etc, all once great military conquering powers, now broke. England isn't too far behind. We are only 236 years old, and sliding ever faster into that 3rd world status..

If we get involved with this fight with Iran and start that war, it'll be the last war we start for a long time. Russia & China both will support Iran. Russia has 5000+ nukes as well. Oh then North Korea will attack the South Koreans, and Japan will support the South, while China will support the North as would Russia.. Hmm then what? Lets ponder that. Do you GOPers understand the ramifications of a war with Iran? The Independents & Democrats and those with common sense know the results of war with Iran..

If you are an Armchair Monday morning soldier (Quarterback)? Sitting in a safety of your couch in front of a TV.

Let me clue you in. There are honorable soldiers. There are also soldiers that kill innocent women and children and create more problems for their country than they will ever solve.

There are also honorable citizens, just as there are dishonorable citizens. In a democracy, everyone has a right to speak and a right to express their opinion. Of course, no one has the right that you should respect them, but then, very few people are going to respect you if you are unable to show that you respect their opinion. I, for one, lost all respect for you with your first sentence.

They all made monies, became richer, we poorer and WMDs were "transferred" to Iran, Syria and other places for future Saudi seventh century desert dances!

Of course, Clintons, Liebermanns always dance as Jewish groups want!!!

Hasn't done anything for this nation? Ok so ordering the Seal Team 6 to carry out the killing of enemy #1 Osama bin Laden isn't doing anything for the nation? Willard, John McLame and King George all said it was a waste of resources to go after bin Laden, or they wouldn't invade Pakistans sovereignty to get him, yet they were all for invading Iraq's sovereignty in 2003.. Now Mittens Romney is totally in favor of the killing of bin Laden and lobbed a cheap shot at someone he even couldn't beat, Jimmy Carter.

turbulence you must be a GOP speech writer with your generalities about this that and the other. The GOPers just don't get it. They prefer to govern with laws based on morality, rather than reality. Stopping someone from making a choice won't put people back to work. Denying civil rights to a class of people based on who they CHOOSE to live their lives with is illegal and will be shot down by even the most conservative of SCOTUS in the history of America. You can't write discrimination back into states or the US Constitutions. The GOP want war with Iran. The GOP want to piss on the American people by rebuilding Iran after bombing them back into the stone ages. The GOP claim to love American & Americans by saying the world is a bad place and out to get us, so the only way to be stronger at home is to invade the world. The GOP have turned their back on Americans since the Reagan dictatorship. He cut corporate tax rates from near 80% to where it is now by the GOP at 35%. America has declined terribly under GOP rule and policies. The GOP are about hate, invasion of personal privacy and controlling your entire existence.

War with Iran will bankrupt this nation and cause the unemployment rates to spike to about 12-15% under a Romney Presidency within 2 years.

    N. Korea is pretty isolated... One of their higher educated folks visiting Seoul S. Korea thought the buildings were all stage props like a movie set and couldn't believe they were full of people working. I believe if Iran doesn't get with the program they will become an international pariah and their people will fall way way behind the rest of the world. Same thing happened with China years ago when they isolated themselves from the rest of the world. Any country that can't get along with the international community certainly takes the risk of falling way behind on technology and development.

I believe Iran will comply and has been complying with its obligations, which it incurred when Iran signed the "nuclear non profiferation treaty." Iran's program has been under IAEA inspections and will continue to be inspected.

In 2006 Israel attacked Lebanon, killing over a thousand people, mostly women and children, which is their style. Then they claimed children were human shields. Yeah, like the Israeli pilots in their American supplied jets were really trying to differentiate their targets.

Israel also attack the civilian population of Gaza, killing over 1400 people, again, mostly women and children. Those Israeli are just fine humanitarians. They steal the land from a population and then have them designated as terrorists when and if they attempt to get their lan back or stop the stealing of even more land and water.

This news is tough luck for the war mongering Zionist supporters, who troll these forums, speading hate for Iran, a country that has no attacked another in over 180 years. It will be a lot harder to justify another war for Israel. Perhaps another false flag attack, such as the one Israelis and Zionists helped perpetrate on 9/11, will be coming.

Here are 4 links which you war mongers can ponder, which will show how and why, the neocons, allied
with Israel got the US into the war with Iraq and our present situation in
Iran. They will show the unholy relationship between high ranking Zionist members
of the Pentagon and the leadership of Israel.

Stop all US aid to the paranoid, parasitic leaches in Israel.

US and Israeli intelligence agencies mostly agree that Iran has not restarted its development of a nuclear bomb, the New York Times reported on Saturday.

According to the report, the assessment among top US officials is that Iran has
not yet decided to pursue a nuclear weapon, a conclusion which was established
based on intelligence analyses. (Zionists base their conclusions on whatever propaganda the right wing, war mongers in Israel are pushing that week).

Israel - while seeing an existential threat in Iran's possible pursuit of a
nuclear bomb - mostly agrees with those assessments, a US intelligence official

This is great. We should send the North Koreans to verify compliance.

Nuclear suicide bombs will affect the whole world. I think Ahmadinejad is just stalling for the time to build them.

Iran is led by a madman. He is the product of a religion that celebrates suicide bombings. He can not be allowed to possess nuclear weapons. If he has them, he will certainly use them. Not only the US and Israel, but all the civilized nations of the world must take any steps necessary to ensure that it never happens. If this helps, great, but I'm skeptical about Iranian sincerity.

A radioactive atmosphere will not respect national borders!

Ahmadinejad is hardly a mad man. He's a vary calculating person who happens to be on the other side of the fence from the US. He knows that any act of nuclear terrorism that is traced back to him means the end of Iran as we and he know it.

Keep in mind, the bombast notwithstanding, Iran has never attacked or invaded another country, unlike Iraq, Egypt, and the US.

So you Liberals really believe that Iran is to be trusted? When a terrorist gets a dirty bomb into one of our cities we'll see all that trust for Iran shine on and on right. And all you American haters go to Iran ,or any muslin country and see if you can say bad things about their worlds and live.

            GOD BLESS AMERICA!

How on Earth is any of this related to "the liberals" ?? And when did being "liberal" become such a bad thing? This country was founded by "liberals" who, at their time, were considered to be radical for bucking the English monarchy. Furthermore, I believe it was Thomas Jefferson who said that to protest one's government is the highest form of patriotism, it doesn't get any more "American" than Thomas Jefferson. You hate Obama so much, perhaps YOU should go to a "Muslim country" for awhile. But, then you would probably learn that Islam is actually a very peaceful religion not too dissimilar to Christianity, and like the small groups of Christian extremists here in America (the nut jobs at Westboro, to name one example) "Muslim countries" have them too (Al Queada).... That would blow your mind WIDE open...

No matter how you spin it, this is a postive development. That's not to say we're where we want to be, only that we are at least pointing in the right direction.

What you can do "Dad-2025374 is stick it where the sun don't shine. If you went to a muslim country it would feel quite a bit like the US as they are the only countries in the world that constantly have religion in their politics like us. I don't need someone who either lives in his mothers basement or a trailer telling me about strategic threats. We have thousands of bombs and Israel has over 50, all we have managed to do so far is drive up the cost of oil and slow down what is passing for an economic recovery. It is not like any of this is new, 1973 first gas lines and if we ever actually had an energy independence plan we could let the nuts in that part of the world have at it on camels. All of you that want to bomb or go to war, don't you get it, WE ARE BROKE

Dan, those who won't be doing the fighting or paying for the wars are the ones who most quickly suggest we start invading and bombing.

            Not surprisingly.

Notice how MSNBC has thrown in the headline in the middle of the report about Israeli's military chief stating that Iran Is rational and not seeking Nuclear weapons.

What a lowsey propaganda ploy for the readers on MSNBC's behalf

But they surely didn't add the headline about Netanyahu rebuking that Militay Cheif's statement shortly after it was made ...and reassuring the International community that Iran were not rational and were seeking Nuclear weapons.

The deception of Iran lies in the very fact that they have delayed any agreement for so long....giving them enough time to mask their true intentions.

liars and deceptors....something that is a part of the deceptive words in their very own unholy book that their false prophet conjured up 1500 years ago. They follow that paganism to the "T"

You have to be a fool to believe anything these people say.

Would it have been more accurate if MSNBC didn't report what the military chief said? Don't we want to know what the military people say in addition to what the politicans say?

I have absolutely no faith in any 'agreement' that Iran signs. The world will eventually learn that any Iranian 'agreement' will dissolve into stalling, deception, a multitude of excuses as to why inspectors can't do a complete inspection, etc. etc.

Unfortunately, Iran with a nuke is inevitable without a military strike. The US and the rest of the supporters of our no-nukes for Iran policy have been way to slow with sanctions and the sanctions have been mostly very weak. A blunt threat to Iran would be in order at this time with absolutely no wiggle room. Our demands should be immediate and with no comprimise. Otherwise, it's time for swift and decisive military action.

Chuck - On what basis do you make your prognostications that an Iranian nuke is inevitable? Did you just pull it out your anus or are you paid Zionist propagandist.

Iran 's nuclear program is under voluntary inspection, unlike Israel's nuclear weapons sites.

In 2007, all 16 US intelligence agencies concluded Iran does not have a nuclear weapons program. It is
irresponsible to punish Iran for things we "think" they
              "might" do in the future.

Want to read about some crazy thinking? Read this from a noted Israeli:

Israeli military historian, Martin van Creveld, who in 2010 said that “Israel
could find itself one day forced to exterminate the European continent using
all kinds of weapons including its nuclear arsenal if it felt its demise
neared,” and stressed that “Israel also considers Europe a hostile target.”

“We have hundreds of nuclear warheads and
missiles that can reach different targets in the heart of the European
continent, including beyond the borders of Rome, the Italian capital,” Creveld
said, adding that most of the European capitals would become preferred targets
              for the Israeli air force.

He reiterated “Israel’s ability to destroy the
whole world whenever it felt its existence would be doomed to extinction.”

              Ralph,

You find the most random people to quote.

You are quoting an interview from a Professor of Military Strategy at an Israeli university. It's from an interview he gave in 2003... which happens to be 8 years ago.

Martin Van Creveld does not make military policy. In the article (which i cant seem to find on the internet the original article in the dutch weekly "Elsevier", and i can only find an article in the Guardian that has an excerpt from the the original interview.

Van Creveld doesnt make policy. He's an Israeli citizen, regardless of his background.

I have a family friend who is an Israeli (who lives in America) and he's a locksmith. I dont think you've tried to use a locksmith to bash Israel yet. Would you like his opinion? What about his opinion from 8 years ago?

Apparently Israeli military historian, Martin van Creveld is someone worth quoting, because I found this information in a news article.

Here is more about Mr Creveld. It appears to me that he is someone of note, as they use the word preeminent. Also,my original post showed he made his comment in 2010, not 2003.

But a growing number of analysts, including Israelis, are now saying openly that Israel’s warnings are at least partly a disinformation campaign.

The skeptics include Martin van Creveld, Israel’s preeminent military historian and theorist, who said in an interview that Israel could do some damage to the Iranian program
but could not knock it out.

“I would not be surprised if there was a strong element of political theater” to the Israeli threats,
              he said.

Ralph - would you mind citing your source for the 2010 interview?

I do tend to research what most people say in debate settings, so please dont feel like i pick on you exclusively.

Van Creveld does seem to be a noted scholar on military history, i'll give you that... but i would still place him in the same armchair quarterback category that i would place you and I in. I'll chalk that up to difference of opinion.

Archeim - I will make an effort to locate the source for you. I normally just copy what I see in various articles into my documents, where they reside in a flash drive for further reference. I don't always record the sources. I do use csmonitor quite a bit. I also rely on my fine memory.

Prior to the war, it was a valuable source of material on the neocons, who planned and sold the Iraq war, such as Kagan, Wolfowitz, Kristol, Feith, Abrams, Wurmser and others. They called it neocon 101.

Ralph - it happens. no big deal this time.

If you could provide source material in the future that would be helpful. As i dont doubt that your memory is excellent, i lack the ability to network with your brain (or anyone elses).

I like to review the original source material for context and accuracy. I know for a fact that i am far from perfect.

                  Happy friday.
