Number 2 al-Qaida leader in Afghanistan killed in NATO airstrike

KABUL, Afghanistan -- The second highest al-Qaida leader in Afghanistan was killed in a weekend airstrike in the country's volatile east near the border with Pakistan, NATO-led forces said on Tuesday.

Saudi Sakhr al-Taifi, also known as Musthaq and Nasim, was responsible for commanding foreign insurgents and directing attacks against coalition and Afghan forces, NATO said in a statement.

He frequently traveled between Afghanistan and Pakistan, carrying out commands from senior al-Qaida leadership, supplying weapons and equipment to insurgents and transporting insurgent fighters into Afghanistan, the statement said.

He was killed on Sunday in the Watahpur district of Kunar province after being identified with another al-Qaida militant.

No civilians were harmed and no civilian property was damaged, the statement said.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Glad that got the bastard. But this just underscores the fact that Al-Qaida is still active in Afghanistan and as soon as our troops depart that activity will increase significantly and they will be back to where they were, Kharzi will be pushed aside or co-opted.

It is great to see success like this in the war against Al Qaeda. The lack of such success under the Bush administration was beyond frustrating, because it was due to a lack of effort on the administration's part. While leaders, like the Commandant of the Marine Corps, called for the Bush administration to refocus on Al Qaeda, the administration spent more and more of its time focussed on Iraq.

Those of you who pretend to see flaw in the Obama administration's handling of this war must be consistently reminded of the fact that the Republican party made a decision to largely ignore Al Qaeda in March of 2003, when 10 years of intel was ignored to justify a war in Iraq. This unnecessarily expanded the battle front and demanded a disproportionate percentage of our military resources given that Al Qaeda, not Iraq, had actually struck us a deadly blow costing 3000 American lives on September 11, 2001.

JUST IDIOTIC. cooperation among Sunni Muslims against a common enemy is well-documented. who did we mess with more than Iraq prior to 9-11 in the whole Muslim world? after the Desert Storm Gulf war turkey shoot who had a bigger motive to want to get revenge than Iraq?

Apparently what seem not to understand this is war. A different kind of war than one we have fought in the past, but it is war. At least Obama got Bin Laden, that is more than you can say for some of the Presidents of the Past. At least we are free, and everyone should be thankful they can call themselves AMERICANS, even thought you do not appreciate our country.

i love watching obama's mindless cult-idol worshippers and people who cal themselves Progressives wallow in their own hypocrisy. the fact is Progressives are SUING THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION IN COURT over it's continuing to carry out the Bush Administration's war on terror policies. the REAL Left says you dont send missiles into a sovereign nation to ASSASINATE foreign citizens without a trial of anything.

the ACTUAL FACTS are that the obama administration has reserved the right to DO every thing bush did and THEN SOME, according to the Progressive lawsuit obama's polices are in some ways WORSE than bush's; including DOMESTIC warrantlesss wiretapping, AND RENDITION, that is handing over people to other countries to be TORTURED, assassinations, LIKE THIS ONE

Keep the suckers on the defensive .

                          Time and money well spent.

I hope everyone understands why this is being done. Does anyone really want their children, grand children, or future generations to live under the threat of these extreme terrorist, radicals forever. Yea it's another number 2 guy and there still are many more willing to fill his shoes. Sooner or later they must change and give up. They are the worlds worst kind. No alliegiance to any nation, only want to die not live because they are full of hatred and the ideals they have. Because of iggnorance and desperation they do these things and so far they prove to be pretty good at what they do.

Imagine if these terrorist types would change. They could help turn the world around and help bring peace to all. But no, they have choosen to be the way they are. I am not happy this is happening. But I am glad that the United Sates, Nato and others have the courage to stand our ground against them. Best we can justice will be served to them.

It's good to see more and more Al-Qaida removed from the planet, may they live happily ever after with their 50 virgins. LOL......We have a new enemy destroyer folks, the Drone Killing Machine, with it's quiet foot print, unmanned, yet seems to have an accuracy rate bar none, a 99% success rate sounds about right, which is lethal. The new age of war, where we have un-manned machines doing our bidding. The deadliest machine we have in our arsenal. Now let's unleash it's readiness on the enemy, one by one we will destroy the enemy. Somethings just take a little longer than others, I'll accept that.

Iran has a drone of ours.

Matter of time before drones are used on us.

Very few people support endless war in Afghanistan. A lot of people support knocking off al-Qaida wherever they pop up. Sure, whack-a-mole can be frustrating at times, but it's a lot worse for them.
