Jamil Afridi, right, brother of a Pakistani doctor Shakil Afridi speaks at a news conference in Peshawar, Pakistan, on Monday.
PESHAWAR, Pakistan – The brother of the Pakistani doctor imprisoned for helping the CIA to track Osama bin Laden says the family needs protection, and the U.S. government should provide it.
Jamil Afridi, elder brother to Dr. Shakil Afridi, spoke to NBC News on Monday in Peshawar, after he and his lawyers addressed a group of journalists about his brother's case.
Pakistan jails doctor who helped CIA track down bin Laden
"My appeal to the U.S. government is that they give Dr. Shakil protection, and give us – his brothers and sisters – protection as well," said Afridi. "We have no protection here."
Dr. Shakil Afridi was arrested in the weeks after the May 2011 U.S. raid on the bin Laden compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The doctor ran a fake vaccination campaign for U.S. intelligence as part of an attempt to get inside the compound and confirm Bin Laden's location. Though those plans failed, U.S. officials have said Dr. Afridi's efforts did help lead them to bin Laden.

Pakistani doctor Shakil Afridi was jailed for 33 years.
Dr. Afridi was tried under a legal system known as the Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR), which applies only in Pakistan's semi-autonomous tribal areas. Trials are conducted by a local government official in consultation with tribal elders, and the accused are not allowed legal representation. Dr. Afridi was convicted on treason charges and sentenced to 33 years in prison.
His brother dismissed the charges against Dr. Afridi as "false," saying he did nothing against Pakistan's national interest, and that "anything" could happen to him or his family now.
'Schizophrenic ally': US to ax $33 million in Pakistan aid?
"For one whole year, we had no idea where he was – whether he was alive or dead," said Afridi. "Now they say he's in Central Jail, Peshawar, but we're not allowed to see him."
Dr. Afridi's conviction further complicated already tense relations between the U.S. and Pakistan. U.S. officials demanded his release, claiming his efforts helped to capture an enemy to both Pakistan and the U.S. But Pakistani officials have called Dr. Afridi's decision to work for a foreign intelligence agency a "serious offense."
U.S. officials say they expect to continue the conversation about Dr. Afridi with their Pakistani counterparts, but the list of unresolved issues between the two countries continues to grow.
Both sides are negotiating the re-opening of the overland NATO supply routes that run through Pakistan – shuttered since last November – and the Pakistan government also is calling for a complete halt on all U.S. drone strikes within the country. In the last week alone, there have been four strikes carried out in the border region with Afghanistan.

This man is robbing the merit that belongs to Obummer.
I would say nice try to the brother. No free plane ride and a government welfare check each month. Do this and you will have all the 5th cousins wanting a visa and Big Macs...........No.
The Original Poster is making no sense at all. Can we please put aside the tinfoil hats and say something pertinent please?
Seven2Seven
Actually I agree with Jamil Afridi, I feel we should give this family protection if possible (which doesn't mean they would be on welfare forever, they would probably eventually get jobs here). His brother, Dr Shakil Afridi, has been very courageous and deserves respect. And we should have known the Pakistani goverment would pick on the doctor and his family, judging from their reaction after the attack on OBL's compound.
That Dr. and his family did a service, a very big service, to our country. They want to come to the US and live here, I say let's pick'em up and give them a ride here. After that, they are on their own. Clearly that Dr. helped us get that S.O.B and we got him.
Pakistan has proven to be NO FRIEND of the US. Cut off all aid, cut off all diplomatic relations, hit them with sanctions HARD, isolate them. Let them take care of themselves. If Russia's Putin doesn't like it, I dare that filthy worm to come to my house and I'll give him a martial arts education his kids will feel.
When you're in Rome, you do as the Romans do. Sometimes violence is necessary because that is all some people understand. So speak their language if you want to be understood.
Pakistan clearly is not our friend or ally. They protected and hid Osama for years. They have cut off supply routes, then they prosecuted the man who helped us find bin Laden. We should do whatever possible to get Dr. Shakil Afridi safely out of that country. We owe him that. However, we don't owe his extended family (brothers, sisters, etc.) a thing. If they didn't know where he was for a year, then how were they helping him do a service to our country?
No, this is simply a matter of the extended family trying to cash in on his heroism.
scales67,
Agreed. Just the immediate wife and kids. No more. I give you a bump on this.
Let's show the world that we take care of those that take care of us.
We have spent trillions of dollars supposedly fighting wars on terrorism in the middle east. And now that someone stepped up and shown us where the PRIMARY target of all that sacrifice of blood and treasure was located our response should be to say "tough, you're on your own" or, at best, give them a couple of plane tickets?
They learned this trick in the middle east from the Soviets (who, in turn, I'm sure learned it from someone else). If they wanted information and thought that someone probably had it, they would take the extended family hostage and tell them to cough up or everyone dies. Do we really expect that people are going to help us or provide us with information when doing so puts their entire family at risk and we won't lift a finger to help?
How exactly does in make fiscal sense to continue to spend billions of dollars a day fighting a war we can't win when we can accomplish just as much by helping a few people relocate? Do you suppose than if we can get him out that they'll allow him access to his bank account? Or allow him to sell his house and belongings? I'm sure that a "Moving to America" garage sale wouldn't tip off the government or anything.
Anna
Sorry... We need to pay the "finders" fee and MAYBE grant them asylum. Then let them sort out their own finances. I thought they were entitled to 25milloin or so?
Hello trust :)
Don't be sorry, you are entitled to your opinion, and we may disagree, that's ok.
I was replying to Seven2Seven who said "No free plane ride and a government welfare check each month". They probably wouldn't want the welfare check anyway, maybe just for a bit to give them a chance to get jobs here.
I think the doctor did us a huge service, he risked his life to help us, and even then (right after they killed OBL), after seeing the Pakistani government's reaction, I thought we needed to protect that guy and his family. And they will pick on anyone left in the country, his brothers, sisters, and their kids. Dr Afridi is the one who helped us, but his family will suffer the consequences as well if we don't protect them (which doesn't mean that we shouldn't keep an eye on them tho, just to be sure they're on the same side as their brother).
We may not have many friends in the middle-east, but we should be nice to the ones we do have, just as they have been to us.
Hey guys : what happened to all those millions of dollars reward for any one who help capture Osama? some of that money can pay off his release and with that money it s more than enough for all his family to move some where else safe... hello!!!
US gov. knows better what they did and should of took care of this guy and his family before... I guess they got what they want! nothing matters any more!
I remember Ben Laddin family were allowed to leave US during sep 11 because they have oil and US Gov cares about oil and for that! they let them fly when no one couldn't fly.
This Pakistani guy have nothing so to US he is not worth anything but headache.
This guy should of known better what he was doing and should of notified his Gov.of what he was doing so he s not doing anything behind their back!
I guess the Pakistani Gov see it as treason
Also what US did behind Pakistani Gov in their own soil is ilegal but at least they got the person they have been looking for!
Imagine Mexico flying over US to capture someone in CA imagine what it would happen? we know it s impossible but just imagine!
Anna
I agree we need to do something for him, and family... Pay him the 25 mil once he leaves with his family. the $1 million visa would be available at that point.... yes there is such a thing.. And I think it would be IRS tax free since it is technically paid overseas.. let the paki try to collect anything he owes at that point..
BROTHER OF DOCTOR SEEKS PROTECTION. So does his neighbors in the next town. Most all in Syria, Mexico, Singapore, and most of the African Countries. Deal with it.
This will teach all future people not to deal with the gov't lesson learned. You can only expect to get screwed when you deal with special ops.
The reward money was for information that helped lead to the capture of Osama Bin Laden. The doctor did not provide any information. Our government already had information regarding the location of Osama, really all the doctor did was help confirm that the information was valid. That being said, I do not think any of the reward money belongs to him, but I agree that something should be done to provide some sort of safety for the doctor's IMMEDIATE family (i.e. spouse and children), not brothers, sisters, parents, cousins or anything else. Providing protection for all of these other family members will open doors for all sorts of problems in the future.
you idiots do you expect another guy to put his ass on the line for us again? we bungled this badly. yes, WITSEC and $$ should have been the deal. this man will spill his guts willingly now. you don't think its worth taxpayer $$? Damn, he helped us get OBL. unreal..
The military will probably claim: "Protection is not in our budget".
Why did we give these people nukes? Oh, right. Because dubya is an idiot.
With that moronic post you should be careful using the term idiot. Anyone smarter than a fifth-grader is laughing at your post.
Since India and Pakistan officially got the nukes in 2000 while Clinton was still President, you may blame Bush if you ignore the facts.
Blame Clinton and Reagan as well as Bushes and Obama for our 3rd world status.
Why did we give Osama Stinger missiles to fight the Russians in Afganistan? Because the US government thinks it can predict the future.......
India and Pakistan developed their own nuclear warheads and missiles. Where have you people been?
Mountianstate, if you feel we are third world, you're free to leave anytime. You've obviously never been to a third world country, or you're just plain dumb.
why did we fly over their soil without their permission? who does things like this? imagine Mexico flying over CA to capture a drug cartel without US permission!
they re both doing good work but if every one could do this whenever they feel like it! we would never be friend with any one! and it means War when you do something like that too!
Because we know they aren't our ally
I can say the same thing about Mexico! it doesnt justify what they did!!!
Sorry but this guy should have looked at the Administrations' history of throwing our friends under the bus, before he trusted the U.S. Government.
proud, sadly you are 100% correct, if only we could trade with Pakistan a 1000 of our violent OWS Protestors for this hero Doctor and his family
You do realize it was the teabaggers who cut gas lines and curb stomped people, not OWS, right?
I don't recall "teabaggers" doing anything of the sort. Also, I am not a teabagger and don't even like them. But I am a Republican and that is just bull.

Kurt: "if only we could trade with Pakistan a 1000 of our violent OWS Protestors for this hero Doctor and his family."
I'm curious, Kurt: How many of our NON-VIOLENT OWS heroic Protestors should we trade for the Doctor? It never ceases to amaze me how many Americans are willing to throw their fellow American citizens under ANY bus! Sad but true!
Good job, Toasty! Good job at reminding Terry of some pertinent facts!
Sadly true.
WHAT?-4099780
There wasn't anything pertinent there. Just BS.
Can we just go get this guy, his family, the doctor and anyone else related and bring them here please. Why wasn't this already done?
And the blind chinese guy's family too. Why were they left behind?
Pretty sure, when push comes to shove, neither country really wants to start a war over us getting these people.
I don't understand why he & his family are still there. That should have been a very high priority, extracting him right after seal team 6.
"You screwed up flounder. You trusted us. You can't spend your whole life wallowing in your mistakes."
Animal House
Did it ever occur to you that maybe they didn't want to leave, and didn't expect to be arrested? No, I didn't think so.
We should stop ALL aid to Pakistan, cold. And ask for this man and family to be released to us to get any of that aid restored. Pakistan has played both sides of the fence all along and many of our soldiers are dead because of that fact.
Yeah, the fact that they arrested and jailed this guy in a kangaroo court pretty much confirms that the Pakistani government was hiding Bin Laden on purpose. They are not our ally.
Good idea! i think sitting around being extorted is a bad foreign policy supported by bad foreign policy makers... time to turn the tables!
Well we know what side of the fence Pakistan sits on. ar all their products from being brought into the country
Let us make a deal with Pakistan, we the USA will take this hero Doctor and his family if we can exchange them for 1000 of our Violent Socialist Govenment Handout OWS Protestors.
You do realize it was the teabaggers who cut gas lines and curb stomped people, not OWS, right?
Nice try, Toasty, it was OWS trying to blow up bridges in the Cleveland area and the destruction OWS lunatics caused in Oakland near the port. Still glady trade these Violent OWS members for the Doctor hero and his family. Send Violent OWS to Pakistan while bring those few Pakistani Heros to the USA
Send them the 1% freeloaders - they will be right at home with the corrupt rich of any country. Sinner, why do you complain about the $200 handout to the poor and not complain about the $250,000 tax break for the rich - take the beam out of your own eye, then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brothers. Jesus is not a Republican. There are no capitalists and guns in Heaven. Jesus told a story about Lazarus and the rich man who went to hell and asked for Lazarus to wet the tip of his finger to comfort his burning ... guess what Jesus said.
Sorry Kurt, but OWS protesters are the victims of violence, but not perpetrators like the teabaggers typically are.
Nice try, Kurt! But it was NOT OWS protesters that tried blowing up Cleveland bridge--it was a splinter group of Anarchists--IF it was even true to begin with! Ditto with Oakland--don't listen to the corporatist brainwashing conservative media.
Also, I'm curious, Kurt: How many of our NON-VIOLENT OWS heroic Protesters should we trade for the Doctor?
It never ceases to amaze me how many Americans are willing to throw their fellow American citizens under ANY bus! Sad but true!
Toasty
I don't remember anyone being killed at a TEA Party rally.
I don't remember anyone throwing Molotov Cocktails at a TEA Party Rally.
I don't remember any woman being raped at a TEA Party rally.
I don't remember any Police in riot gear at any trying to do crowd control TEA Party rally.
I don't remember anyone pissin or sh!tin in public at any TEA Party rally.
I don't remember any City paying millions in cleanup and Police wages for any TEA Party rally.
Care to refute those statements?
Kurt,
Pehaps we should send them them the right wing fanatics like you who think that freedom of speech and assembly guarantees in the Bill of Rights don't extend to those you disagree with. You will feel right at home there. Oh sure, they're intolerant rabid Muslims and you're an intolerant rabid alleged Christian, but you're so much alike....
With friends like Pakistan, we don't need enemies.
Yeah, the fact that they arrested and jailed this guy in a kangaroo court pretty much confirms that the Pakistani government was hiding Bin Laden on purpose. They are not our ally.
remind me of guantanamo and trial of blind who blew up WTC
That is definitely an undestatement. Fact of the matter is, the Taliban and other radical insurgents control the countryside, anything not in an urban setting. The only REAL way to deal with religious fanatics anywhere, not just Pakistan nor Afghanistan is to bomb them back to the stone ages. They live in caves anyway. However, this is an option that the US is unwilling to do. So, the status quo will remain. Soon we will leave the region with our tail tucked between our legs, just as the Soviets did.
While the CIA was hunting Bin Laden, see what the FBI has quietly been doing here with a search for "New police weapon against homeless" and also 'Historic coverup of FBI and police crimes currently taking place". Bill Anderson Middletown CT soxin8@hotmail.com
I understand the reasoning here, for the guy's arrest I mean, because he was working for a foreign intelligence agency. I think someone doing the same here (United States) would face criminal charges. However, given that the US is Pakistan's (supposed) ally and the result of his actions led to the (supposed) discovery of bin Laden, the penalty seems incredibly disproportionate.
I'm surprised the guy didn't request political asylum for himself and his family before going through with this. Or maybe he did, and the US government bailed out on him. Maybe he got assurances from an operative in the field that didn't have authority to make that sort of decision. Any number of things could have gone wrong, but considering the US didn't even formally notify Pakistan of a military action in their sovereign territory, I'm not surprised that the government threw this guy to the wolves. I'm sure his family will be killed as well, if not now, then within the next few years.
The most troubling thing brought up in this story is the FCR (Frontiers Crime Regulation). There shouldn't be two standards of law in Pakistan; there should be one law for one people, and legal representation should be a right for all of them.
Bradley - you would be incorrect. There are lobbying firms blatantly working for Israel in DC. And about 1/3 of congress accepts donations from Israel (indirectly - though middlemen). And if one challenges the Israel lobby - their propaganda machine cranks up. Just wait and see what happens about this post.
And you miss the point about Pakistan... There are no (zero) laws there. They make up laws as needed to punish those who try to hurt their heros (such as Bin Laden). Realize that their Imams were the ones who found him guilty - these Imams are the frontier government (each area to its own government, laws, and rules). What is illegal in one may be legal in another. And none apply to the central government (such as it is).
We'll simply have to pay a couple billion for the Doctor's freedom.
Is it possible that the USA threw the doctor under the bus in order to distract from whomever actually got into Bin Ladin's compound and gave us the most usable intel info?
In other words: pay no attention to the man behind the curtain--here take this doctor and try him for treason instead--and forget about any uncomfortable real details of the operation.
Asking Odumbo to do WHAT????
Are you kidding??? The only way Odumbo gets involved if it’s for self gratification
and you know what that means! The Dr. gets thrown under the bus!
You hit that nail on the head...You would have thought that someone in this idiotic administration would have thought about that before the raid. That hey maybe if we do get Osama this Doctor might be at risk we should probably prepare for that.....But that's asking alot from this idiot to actually come up with a plan all on his own and have it feasible....Heck he's still trying to figure out why he needs to wear a tie when making a public appearance in a foreign Country....I mean he is supposed to represent the greatest nation on Earth not look like some jack*ss on vacation. I know that's hard for the man and thankfully we only have a few more months of this loser than we can have some real change
I'm sure you think you sound really clever using derogatory terms like "Odumbo", but actually all you do is sound like "Seadumbo". Grow up!
Wayback, you may win the prize for the dumbest post of the day. Tell me, what would your plan have been since your soooooo smart?
I'm a Vietnam vet, 5th Special Forces, B-36 and had a friend evacuated from the top of the US embassy. We made no preparations for extracting Vietnamese, Cambodians, and others who befriended us in Vietnam and as a result, the exodus of the boat people from Vietnam resulted in many loss of life and displacement, some of whom finally made it to America. We should have offered asylum to those in Iraq and Afghanistan who assisted us interpreteurs and other hazardous positions that target them for reprisals as we brought our troops home.
The problem of protecting friendly nationals has been long in existence and given the conservative anti-immigrant fervor makes it difficult for Congress to fund such support. President Obama is the best Commander in Chief I have ever known.
The U.S. has been able to allow Obama's illegal relatives to roam around freely in this country, the least we can do is get this man and his family to safety. Obama can spike the ball and take all kinds of credit for bin Laden's death while a real hero sits in prison. Sad.
Just for the record during the 2008 election campaign, President Obama referred to "having been in all 57 States" and many consider it to be a 'gaffe', because there are, after all, only 50 states in the United States of America....There are however 57 member states in the Organization of Islamic States......Coincidence? I think not
Also, since Obama stated, "Here in Asia" while in Hawaii. Is Hawaii one of the 57 states in an Obama World?
Keep going wayback, you just more and more stupid!
wayback: "......Coincidence? I think not"
Best go back to your wayback machine--and please don't forget Kurt and your tinfoil hat! lol!
Don't expect any help from Obama.
Hop on your Camel and come on over to the US
Who, specifically, is responsible for making known the name of the doctor?
Exactly my question!
I'm still trying to figure out why we didn't hustle the doctor out of the country before the raid. I'm really disappointed in the President for that misstep.
Doc, can you say under the bus?
Pakistan has its nose out of joint because we discovered and killed Ben Laden without its consent The fact that it must have known it was harboring this guy seems now to be an open secret. It is taking vengeance on anyone within its power who it may suspect has something to do with revealing Ben Laden's whereabouts. Add in all the other anti-US activities of this regime and our purse strings should snap shut where this country is concerned. Yes, they've got the a-bomb. Any effort to stop other countries from having that bomb isn't going to work. N. Korea would gladly export them for cash anyway.
someone dropped the ball on this one. how could you leave this doctor knowing the government of pakistan was going to go ballistic over this. obama administration got the credit for killing osama, that's great. now man up and admit you screwed up.
The lesson is; Pakistan is not, I repeat not an American allay. So, the U.S. needs to quit supporting them, they are the enemy, they can not be trusted.
I thought treason was when you sold your countries secrets to a foreign power. If they didn't know where bin Laden was and weren't trying to hide him the fact that the doctor told U.S. officials there was no treason. So does this mean that Pakistan is admitting they knew where bin Laden was hiding and the government was protecting him? Very interesting. Perhaps we could hold off $33 billion in foreign aid to Pakistan, a billion for every year he serves and should he die in prison, cut them off completely.
I know we are paying for influence and I know a lot of that is due to the number of nukes Pakistan has and is building. I also know that while we can't take everything away, we can certainly put a bid dent in their nuclear program without that much effort.
Can it be more obvious they support terrorism? We need to somehow secure their nukes and cut off anything we send to them..
Get in line behind the Hmong, who are still being persecuted for helping America fourty years ago.
Help for the doctor? That isn't going to happen. Obama got his political capital on Bin Laden being killed.
Those that actually had a hand in it are already thrown under the bus and forgotten.
