A military strike against Iran to prevent the country from becoming a nuclear power is still very much a possibility, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak told NBC News' chief foreign correspondent, Richard Engel, on Wednesday.
"A nuclear Iran is unacceptable," he said a week after world powers met with Iranian representatives in Baghdad.
"No option should be removed from the table," Barak told Engel.
Barak did not specify what would trigger military action.
“We all hope it will be solved through sanctions or diplomacy, we will be happy to wake up one morning and see it is all over. … It probably won’t happen,” Barak said, calling international talks with Iran "a ritual of self-delusion."
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Wednesday he did not expect talks next month with six world powers in Moscow to yield any major breakthroughs.
The six powers -- the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany -- failed to persuade Tehran on May 23 in Baghdad to halt its most sensitive nuclear work, but they will meet again in Moscow on June 18-19 to try to end the standoff.
The Baghdad meeting focused on foreign efforts to roll back Iran's enrichment of uranium to 20 percent fissile purity, a level approaching bomb grade.
Ahmadinejad reiterated Iran's "legal right" to enrich uranium to 20 percent and said other countries would have to explain why Iran was not allowed to do this and what they would offer Iran in exchange if it stopped enriching uranium.
On Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling for an end to Iran enriching uranium, said the original red line had been set at 3.5 percent enrichment -- sufficient to run civilian nuclear power stations -- but had been relaxed.

I find it interesting that Mr. Barak can say that, when the whole world knows that Apartheid Israel has 300 Nuclear warheads.

People need to look further into this. Iran actually needs nuclear power because they subsidize and consume so much of their own oil. Soon with increase in demand through growth of population they will not have enough oil to export and supply their own subsidized need as well. This will cause an uprising of the poor that have been held at bay with these government subsidies of oil. Perhaps the uprising will remove what is perceived to be a radical islamic government but what if the drastic times have drastic consequences.

I'm sorry, but I don't recall Israel threatening to wipe Iran off the map. The other thing is, if Canada or Mexico was shooting rockets into the United States, what do you think our response would be? It seems logical that Israel has the right to self defense. Under the circumstances, it seems they have been pretty well reserved about the situation overall.
Agree and if the US doesn't carry this same banner of unacceptability over a nuclear Iran, our own leadership should be tried for treason.

If you want to know who Israel attacks first ask the citizens of the West Bank who are bulldozed out of their homes by the military without due process of law. There is no doubt this is a blood feud between brothers that goes back to their mutual father Abraham. It is one in which I do not wish to be involved. I find that neither party is this conflict is rational in their thinking with each tilted to its own agenda. I would rather we have not weapons period and end this conflict of humanity because of the predatory nature of our world. Until that happens we are self-doomed to extinction. To Fed Up: It is Israel who has been so clever in stalling any peace with the Palistinians while the building continues - the agressor and warmonger is Israel, not Iran. These talks are just another example of Iran's stalling tactics. The Iranians have no intention of changing anything they are doing related to their nuclear program. The only reason that the Iranians are agreeing to talks now is that they know the international community has had enough and is getting ready to authorize military action to put an end to their program. Once the tensions ease a little the talks will stop with absolutely nothing accomplished and they will continue on with the work.
The Iranians claim that they are only interested in nuclear power and medical research, but this is refuted by their actions. Nuclear power plants only require uranium enriched to about 3.5%. They continue to enrich uranium to 20% when they already have enough at that level to fuel their medical research reactor, the only one that needs this higher enrichment, many times over. They have installed a huge number of advanced centrifuges in their Fordo facility for the purposes of doing even more enrichment. The only purpose in stockpiling 20% enriched uranium is that it is the precursor to feed into the centrifuges to make highly enriched uranium, enriched to 90%, that is needed for nuclear weapons. By stockpiling 20% enriched uranium they are ensuring that they can rapidly produce large quantities of highly enriched uranium for weapons. This is the only logical reason for stockpiling uranium at this enrichment level since there is no other use for it once they had enough to fuel the research reactor. It is only a matter of time before the international community is forced to take out the Fordo facility, the other enrichment facility in Natanz, and all other nuclear research facilities in order to put an end to the Iranians covert weapons program.
And for the uninformed people on here who and anti-Israel, I dare them to name one country that Israel has ever attacked without the provocation of being attacked first. You can not do it because it has never happened. What has happened is other countries have attacked Israel and Israel has responded and won the exchange every time. Also, please name one country that Israel has threatened to wipe of the map - you can't because it has never happened. Now there are numerous Arab countries and fanatical Islamic terrorist organizations that have made it their stated mission to do this to Israel. Let's personify and reverse contextualize my turn's position: Let's say he lives in a neighborhood where all his neighbors hate him and want to kill him, his family and children, then burn down the house a turn his land over to some hate-filled neighbor who would use the property to build his house and fight with his neighbors. Your world view is pretty myopic:
1) Israel is far from being a "secular democracy." It is controlled by a far right-wing coalition of minorities which include ultra-orthodox religious extremists who are repaid with tax exemptions, exemptions from military service, etc. No coalition of minorities can, in any way, be considered "democratic."
2) Israel is still one of the most anti-gay countries in the world. While it has made legal progress in recent years, Jordan is still as "gay-friendly" as Israel.
3) You can still be stoned to death in certain Tel Aviv for being a woman wearing red or slacks. And in such cases, no charges are brought against the "sin police" because the ultra-orthodox control the government.
4) There are no LEGAL topless beaches in Israel. The police still routinely raid the ones at Tel Aviv and Eilat.
5) Peaceful elections? You ignore riots? You don't count assassinations in Israel? By right wing ultra-orthodox "suicide" killers?
6) While Sharia Law is still used as reference law in many Muslim countries, Israel uses the almost identical Talmudic Law. You can still be stoned to death legally in Israel for eating shrimp. "More secular than Ireland" is BS plain and simple.

I'm not a supporter of Israel, but I think I can understand their fear. Though, you say Israel is a "warmonger", I don't believe I've ever heard their leadership say that a specific country didn't have the right to exist. Iran has said on more than one occasion, Israel had no right to exist and should be wiped off the map. With this country being so tiny, I bet if Iran could reach it with a nuclear missle, it would only take one. Yeah, I think they got a right to be scared. Seems the US did the same thing to Fidel Castro and Russia, when they wanted to install missles on Cuba. Cuba has no obligations to the US, but let them say they are going to put Russian ballistic missles on their Island, and I bet the US will go through extreme measures to stop them. The problem with this statement is that in Iranian speak, Israel is not a sovereign nation, but a "Zionist entity". The fact is, Iran also say of "Israel must be wiped off the map" as a matter of state policy. That - and their staunch refusal to comply with NPT - is in and of itself a valid and legitimate reason for Israel to strike preemptively, and even to use non-conventional weapons if need be.
Before saying that Iran wants to wipe Israel off the face of the earth you should think about why is Iran opposed to Israel. Iran is opposed to Israel for one reason and one reason only. Iran is an Islamic country run by Muslim clergy. Israel is an occupier and oppressor of Muslim Palestinians. Thus Iranian religious government has to be opposed to country that occupies Muslim land. But that is the exact reason why Iran will not nuke Israel. Because if Iran nukes Israel, Palestine will be wiped out too. Thus, nuking Israel defeats the purpose of being opposed to Israel. Why nuke Israel to free Palestinians if Palestine will be destroyed in the process? Second reason why Iran will not nuke Israel is because Iran is run by Muslim clergy. Jerusalem is the most holy site in Islam, next only to Mecca and Medina. Iran being run by pious clergy will not nuke a Muslim holy site. Then why is Iran trying to get nuclear weapons? Could it be to use it as a counterbalance to Israeli nukes? Israel is the only nuclear power in the region and gets away with bullying all her neighbors. If Iran gets nukes Israel would have to behave. Israel does not want that. Another reason why Iranian government wants nukes is self defense. They saw what happened to other governments that tried to act independently from U.S. and Israeli orders. Their countries got invaded based on shameless lies and their leaders killed. Iraq, Libya, now Syria. U.S. and Israel are pretty much forcing Iran to get nuclear weapons. Iran is a sovereign nation and wants to stay a sovereign nation. Thus Iran will defend herself and has every right to do so. Israel is the main problem. They have nukes and for some reason think they are the only ones entitled to have them. Sorry Israel you are not special. Maybe your bronze age book of fairy tales says you are special, but you are not. A Jew is no better or worse than an Arab or a Persian. Israel will not use their Nuclear Weapons because 1) they know if they did, they would be so isolated and Boycotted that it would make the boycotts of Apartheid South Africa look tame. and 2) it would disrupt Israels Official stance on Nuclear Weapons of neither confirming or denieing their existence, and it would reveal that Israel got its nukes illegally.

And if Israel did try and take out their enemies with nukes, that would be the biggest moronic move they could ever make during their existence. Radiation doesn't just stay where the bomb goes off, it spreads far and wide and can hurt countries that have nothing to do with that area. So if they want to be that stupid, then they can pay the price. The same goes for Iran, or any other country, including the U.S. I don't believe any country wants to be the first to use them and be the blame for killing not only their enemies, but those in other countries that catch the fallout from it, which could reach in the millions.

I agree, as long as Israel uses their own people to fight the war. Unfortunately from what I can sense is that Israel wants the U.S.A. to do the dirty work for them. They should have attacked Iran by now rather than instigating the U.S.A. to do it for them.

You forget that the muslim countries couldn't care less about the fate of their so-called "brothers" in Palestine. That's because the radical islamic clerics in the region bastardize the Koran. While the Koran does glorify death in the name of god, it never says that you should do this at every opportunity. Islam is not a religion of violence, but the radical clerics in the middle east make it so. There's a reason religion is referred to by Karl Marx as "opium for the masses." You, as a religious leader, and especially one in a region where faith has always taken a primary spot in daily life, can use religion to make people follow your every whim, justifying your commands as God's will. Which is exactly what men such as the Ayatollah and Osama Bin Laden did. Unfortunately, if Iran does nuke Israel which is a possibility it will kill both Israelis and Palestinians, at which point the Ayatollah will justify it by saying that the dead Palis died in the name of Allah, just like Hamas and other Palestinian terror groups justify the deaths of Palestinians in their attacks. Giving a nation whose entire populace can be turned into mindless zombies by the words of one man nuclear weapons is beyond insane. It's literally like signing your own death warrant. Israel also says that they have no nukes, and intend their reactors for peaceful production of energy as well. Does anyone actually believe them? Most experts say that they have around 200 warheads and the missiles and aircraft equipped to deliver them. The nukes were based on plans and parts stolen from the United States. More Israeli spies have been caught in the United States than spies from all Communist countries combined. Even the initial yellowcake that Israel used to start its nuclear program was hijacked at sea, including one ship from Canada. Israel even sold nuclear secrets to both Pakistan and South Africa (when SA was under Apartheid sanctions, no less.) Israel is currently feeding arms into Syria in violation of UN sanctions in exactly the same way that Iran is.

A succession of nuclear tests is not really necessary. Israel only conducted two: one undergraound in 1963 which the US covered up for them and one explosives-only (non-nuclear) test in 1966. There is some evidence that Israel may have conducted another undergrond test in South Africa in 1975, but this was more liked to efforts to sell 8 Jericho missiles and 8 nuclear warheads to the Apartheid government than to actual testing.
The Israelis stole the plans from the United States along with key components that they could not produce themselves. They didn't have to test them --- the American taxpayer did that for them.
Iran has been exchanging nuclear and missile technology with North Korea. North Korea is ahead in nukes, but Iran is far ahead in missiles, so it is an active exchange.
And most people really badly estimate the difficulty of building a nuclear weapon. There were two different types used at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. One was a "shotgun" type that could be built by any reasonably intelligent high school student with access to the materials. The other was an "implosion" type that could be built by a college sophomore with access to the materials and a camera shop. The implosion type is the holy grail of nuclear weapons because it is lighter and requires much less fissile material per bomb. This makes implosion weapons more suitable as bombs and missile warheads. And don't forget "durty" nukes that are essentially only conventional explosives wrapped in radioactive material that can be obtained from medical sources. Any nutcase can build a dirty bomb.
And there is still another dirty little secret of nuclear weapons. Much of the weight associated with nuclear weapons comes from the shielding that is necessary to make them safe to handle. If North Korea were to use "suicide" workers to assemble and mount a nuke without shielding, the weight could be reduced by as much as 3/4, making even a primitive weapon such as the one used at Hiroshima light enough to be dropped from a fighter-bomber or mounted on a missile.
The idea that Iran can deploy nukes without a succession is tests is a real reality because of North Korean assistance. Even if they chose to test underground, it would be extremely difficult to tell a deep underground test from an earthquake in one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world.

Go back to the Balfour Resolution and study from there and it is clear Israel should not exist in its current boundaries. In spite of all their bull@!$%#, they have never been our ally and will stand at our side only as long as the ATM machine keeps working. More importantly, we don't need them as an ally. They are of little strategic value and possess nothing that we need. And lets not forget the USS Liberty wherein U.S. sailors were slaugthered by the Israeli Air Force (with our planes) and Jonathon Pollard, the Israeli spy who remains in our prison. They continue to lie about both of these incidents.

Let Israel handle its own problems. The USA had a 10 year war in Iraq and has a 11 year war in Afganistan. In the meantime Israel builds settlements in the occupied lands and Jeruslem as their contribution to peace in the middle east. Enough is enough, Iran is Israel's problem not hours.
