Subscribe to RSSThe body of a missing convicted murderer was dragged out of a car by a bear that ate part of it and buried the rest, authorities in Canada said Saturday, according to reports.
Rory Nelson Wagner, 53, was out on parole from a murder sentence when he vanished from Kamloops, British Columbia, on May 23, CTV reported.
The black bear was later euthanized by conservation officers, CTV said late Saturday.
The Vancouver Sun said Wagner and two others were charged with killing a man who they believed had sexually assaulted their family member.
Wagner eventually pleaded guilty to murder and was convicted in 1996, according to BCLocalNews.com. Parole documents show the murder victim was charged with the sexual assault but found not guilty shortly before the killing.
Hunters came across the remains after finding an abandoned Volkswagen Jetta on a logging road. The bear pulled Wagner’s corpse from the vehicle through an open window and buried him under a pile of dirt and vegetation.
When the hunters made the grisly find, the bear was still in the area, protecting the food stash, BCLocalNews reported.
Conservation officer Darcy MacPhee told CTV: “The bite mark measurements that we had from the body matched perfectly with the teeth on that [euthanized] bear, so we were confident that we had the animal that had been feeding on this person.”
There were conflicting reports about whether Wagner had committed suicide in the car, ahead of autopsy and toxicology tests to determine the likely cause of death.
"It's not going to be particularly difficult. In any case, it does take several weeks for toxicology results to come back. It's fairly standard," coroner Mark Coleman told the Vancouver Sun.

That's b.s. that euthanized the bear. He should've been given a medal.

The bear was killed. Why do they use the word euthanized. Like when they say they harvested a bear. It is KILLED plain and simple.

bears are opportunistic feeders. they truly don't eat a whole lot of meat until it's time to begin prepping for hibernation, or just after hibernation when their bodies are depleted of protein. to a bear, meat is meat. they don't care if it's human or not and to a bear protein is protein. humans consist of protein. bear was just doing what bears do, it made no distinction between human carrion or another carrion.
Another thing I noticed is that the bite mark measurements of the euthanized bear were a perfect match. And if they weren't a perfect match and they had euthanized the wrong bear? What then? A pardon? Or keep killing bear until they got it right?
Yup! That's the program.
Why was the bear euthanized, he or she was only doing what mother nature told it too do. Also this guy did not deserve any better. The bear should have been given a reward for what it did. There should be an island hundreds of miles from any other land that all scum like this are sent to spend the rest of their lives on

What makes em think that the guy committed suicide? Was he armed? Was a gun found?, can't think of how else he would possibly kill himself in the Jetta. We don't know if the guy was dead or alive when the bear dragged him out of the window. There would be evidence of a struggle of some kind if the guy was alive. Hmmmm,,,there is not enough info
That's still under investigation. They're waiting for a toxicology report.
So why kill the bear? Seems to me he did society a favor! He did what should have been done in the first place!
I see that most of the posters here are on the bear's side. Maybe society isn't quite as screwed up as I thought.
What the Hell!... Now that he knows what a Killer tastes like, bring him to Jacksonville!! There's plenty to eat and we could've givin him a Free Pass to the Bear exhibit at the Zoo!! But nooohh, no one asked him for a Dental Impression!! Like they did Ted Bundy!!!

I hope that they salvaged the bear meat. That is a lot of meat that could feed a lot of people. Kind of nice symmetry to the incident, too.

SO why kill the bear? I'm so tired of the misconceptions about the black bear. People should check out bear.org for correct information.They will not stalk us, or continue to look for meat after scavenging. This is only when they eat meat. They are foragers, and eat mostly bugs, and plants!!
@Randolph Vance..you need to check out bear.org. Black bears do NOT crave human flesh. They are scavengers, but prefer ant larvae. They will eat meat of deer and other animals, but rarely hunt for this.
I'm reading all these stupid comments, but let me tell you, when someone sexually assaults a female family member, it takes a REAL man to settle it, not the F@#%!+g courts.

Why euthanize the bear? It was only doing what bears do -- cleaning up the carrion in its territory. It wasn't the bear's fault the dead guy happened to be in a car in the woods.

Typical disingenuous government response to a smart move by the bear ... death. They don't execute the murderer, but kill the bear that does. There's a lesson in government, fellow retards. Do or try to do the right thing and your government will kill you. No good deed goes unpunished. They should have let him finish the job and then given him a nice home in a zoo and a lifetime supply of good bear food and plenty of watermelons to eat in the summer. And, there are more than enough murderers to give the bears a warm, fresh snack once in a while. Good move, Mr. Bear. Rest in peace.
@east coast..not true.BLACK Bears are maligned..they are shy creatures, who forage in the forest. They are not man eaters, do not eat them on a regular basis. Sheesh maybe 60 people in one hundred years have been killed by black bears that they ran into, maybe got too close, not hunted by the bears. Tons more bears are killed yearly by humans>So maybe they should kill more of us.
