Sunday Alamba / AP
Onlookers gather at the site of a plane crash Sunday in Lagos, Nigeria,
Updated at 5:19 p.m. ET: Nigerian authorities said Sunday that as many as 153 people were aboard a Dana Airlines passenger jet that crashed into a two-story building in Lagos, the country's largest city. "I don't believe there are any survivors," said Harold Denuren, Nigeria's director of aviation.
Authorities said that in addition to the passengers and crew aboard the plane, an unknown number of people may also have been killed or hurt on the ground. President Goodluck Jonathan canceled all appointments for Monday and declared three days of official mourning for the victims.
The plane was heading from Abuja, the capital, to Lagos when it went down about 3:30 p.m. local time (10:30 a.m. ET), authorities said. It crashed into a building and broke into two before burning up, witnesses said.
Local reports indicated that at least three buildings were severely damaged, one of them a church. Nigerian Eye reported from the scene that bodies could be seen burning on the ground, while pictures on the Internet showed large plumes of smoke across the city.
Police said they had recovered the plane's voice recorder. Al Jazeera reported from Abuja that witnesses said the the plane may have hit a power line in clear and sunny weather.
Razak Fadipe, acting head of the Lagos fire service, told The Daily Times of Nigeria that no one had been rescued alive as of 7:30 p.m. (2:30 p.m. ET) but that people were likely to be trapped in the one of the buildings.
Poor road access and a crowd of hundreds of people were complicating rescue efforts, in some cases blocking fire crews from reaching the scene.
"Our job is crucial to the rescue efforts," Fadipe said. "Without us doing our job, other rescue teams cannot gain access to even rescue any survivors that may be trapped in the building."
The Daily Times quoted a senior official of Dana Airlines, whom it didn't identify, as saying the plane had been undergoing repairs for several weeks.
"The station manager protested its use, but the Indian management insisted it should fly," the official said, according to The Daily Times.
The crash came after 10 other people were killed when a Boeing 727 cargo plane flying from Lagos crashed Saturday in Accra, the capital of Ghana, and hit a bus, the Sunday Tribune of Nigeria reported.
The crew of four survived, authorities said.
A senior military officer told the Sunday Tribune that the bus was severely damaged, while the plane's wings and tail broke off from its body.

Don't know how but I imagine this was Boco Harem.
RPG maybe.
RPG liberated from Lybia. Maybe, maybe not. But Nigeria has a big problem with blood thirsty Islam. Oh well. Who cares, they're black.
Not sure but lines at airport security checkpoints are fixing to get very long. Any excuse for TSA to make themselves seem more "vital" and show us just how difficult they can make the lives of air travelers. Then, we'll be happy for the 45 minute lines as opposed to 70 minute lines. Funny, the risk is always there, yet they manage to adjust scrutiny and inspection levels up and down on goofy whims, anomalies, odd events, and the simple passage of time.
Next stop for US.
@Leroy2112 - you're an idiot! Maybe you should have been on that plane also. I hope that hate you just demonstrated devours you from the inside out. I'm sorry that your life has been so miserable that you are able to be so hateful. They just reported that bodies were seen burning and you say "Oh well. Who cares, they're black"!? You disgust me.
STexan
I think we need 2 sets of international flights. One with TSA security and one that uses your preference (minimal security)
I wonder which airline people would put their families on to get to the destination safely. Most if not all all would rather be inconvenienced a few minutes than to never arrive at all. And if you feel the risks are minor you are not very bright.
Your comment reeks of ignorance.
I know I would be canceling my flight plans if I lived there!
STexan You must not fly very much. You think TSA makes your life miserable here? When was the last time you flew in a different Country? The TSA in the US is tame, compared to Europe or a lot of other area's. You DO realize that TSA was set up BECAUSE of 911, don't you? Thank them for your families safe travels. And, then go to Thailand, and see how fast you get through Security.
Very sad, turn of events. A huge and tragic loss of life, and my condolences and prayers go out to their families. I hope they can get the answers of what caused this tragic event swiftly.
thatgirl, (and your five fans) do realize that Boco Harem is an Islamic radical group demanding Sharia Law for all of Nigeria, including the Christian south? This crash, reminiscent of US 9/11, would gel with today's suicide church attack in Bauchi.
Leroy is being sarcastic in that nobody cares - until Delta oil comes into play.
And to you, we're idiots.
I would look to see WHO was on that plane, ie, political, scientists, terorist type...
Whatever. All I'm saying is that all of the airport based security screening in the world is not going to stop the next successful aircraft based terror attack and that's all I'll say about it. If TSA and Thai security makes you feel safe and secure when flying, then I'm happy for you but I choose to live in the real world. I'm not saying we don't need a certain amount of security (no weapons, or detectable explosives) but that's about all that is prudent given all the other means that don't involve passengers.
All of you who think that this was due to some sort of terrorist attack - I'd like to know where your source of info is. There was nothing in the article to imply any sort of thing. Nigerian airlines have a very poor safety record.
Global warming.
thatgirlvkg you fail at Internets, better luck next time. Didn't realize one could have fans on Newsvine though. Do I have any? - I hope to God not.
Cheetah, most racists typically believe their asinine and hateful comments are witty and inoffensive because they are blind to their own despicable characters. That may be why you find Leroy's blithering ravings to be merely sarcastic instead of bigoted.
After doing some checking around, it appears that the Doma Airlines plane was one of their MD-83 aircraft, not a 737, and it departed from runway 18-Left at Murtala Muhammed International Airport during the afternoon today, local time there, where today's high temperature in Lagos was 88 degrees F and the humidity was 66%. Runway 18-Left is the shorter of the two runways at this airport, though still 9000 feet in length, with at least 2000 feet of clear ground between the departure end of the runway and several 2-story industrial and residential buildings. Runway 18-Right at the MMI Airport is 12,794 feet in length, also with substantial clear distance between it and a residential neighborhood.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murtala_Muhammed_International_Airport
The local time in Lagos is 5 hours later than in New York, 8 hours later than in Los Angeles. The reported number of people aboard varies from 153 to 162 across several sources. An Allegiant Airlines all-coach seating chart for the same model aircraft shows 150 passenger seats at a 30-inch pitch, plus a crew of 6 to 8.
http://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Allegiant_Air/Allegiant_Air_MD-83.php
The Tondan.com website has several photos of the crash scene:
http://www.tondan.com/2012/06/dana-airlines-plane-crashes-in-the-agege-part-of-lagos-nigeria/
This crash is somewhat similar to the crash in Detroit of Northwest flight #255 in 1987, where the crew failed to set the flaps to departure settings before takeoff, which resulted in the aircraft stalling and crashing into railroad and freeway overpasses more that a half-mile beyond the departure end of runway 3-C, after striking light poles in the DTW executive terminal parking lot. Another possibility would be the loss of an engine on takeoff. Loaded MD-80 series aircraft routinely take off from 7000 feet of runway in the US every day, 2000 feet less runway than was in use in this crash in Lagos today.
@Cheetah-how do you know that Leroy was being sarcastic? There are times to be sarcastic and times you should have some type of humanity about yourself. Maybe you and Leroy should learn how to express yourselves in a way that you don't feel like idiots. If you noticed, Leroy's comment was collapsed by the community so are you calling the community ignorant? @Big Trouble - I don't have fans on the internet and I was not trying to make any. Maybe if you read the collapsed comment by Leroy then you wouldn't be commenting on mine. And don't worry, you don't have any fans.
Nice job Old Timer . . I remember the NW crash in Detroit. I assume you remember the Miracle Baby??!!
@Old timer: good information, thanks. However regarding the Summer 1987 Detroit crash, if memory serves me correctly, it was also the leading edge slats that weren't set. Not sure if they came down independently with another lever or were built into the flap setting like most of today's airliners. Earlier airliners had to have the slats set as well as the flaps with two separate and individual control levers. And I wonder whatever became of that toddler girl that survived - the only survivor - by being shielded by her parents. I remember that crash well, however, because I was flying back from Germany when it happened. That little girl has to be nearly 30 years old now.
@thatgirlvkg, why be sorry for leroy2112? Did you make him that way? You have nothing to be sorry for you did nothing wrong. Don't pity these jerks either.
Wow, look at all the plane parts.. sitting there in clear view like every other plane crash in the history of plane crashes except the 4 on September 11, 2001.
The delusional rants of a conspiracy theorist add absolutely nothing of value to a discussion.
@Old Timer - Flight 255 to Phoenix departed out of gate D12 that night. It usually departed out of D7 but I was working a delayed flight and asked control to move it to another gate. I made my gate announcement that there was a gate change and everyone left my gate and went to gate D12. Because boarding passes had been printed for connecting flights I continued to get passengers for flight 255 at my gate which I would direct to D12. The last passenger I got was a mother and baby that were running to make the flight. To make sure she didn't misconnect I carried her bags so she could carry the baby and we ran to make sure she got on the flight. I worked that flight 5 days a week for 6 months. I live with the fact that I helped that mother and child get on that flight every day of my life. Whenever something like this happens it rips at my heart. When that flight went down I was looking out the window and saw the biggest ball of fire I had ever seen and I knew exactly what flight it was. It was always the worse flight to work because you had so many crew members trying to get home on that flight because it was the last one of the night going to Phoenix. Crew would say, I'm working the flight and when you look for their name on the crew manifest it wouldn't be there. I kicked many a crew member off that flight for trying to jumpseat when there were no jumpseats available. It didn't make it over the I-94 overpass. People say that the crew failed to let the flaps down. We (old Republic employees) thought that it was a loading error. Whatever the reason, when I hear somebody like Leroy and Big Trouble who have posted ignorant comments be so nonchalant about something like this happening it really hurts. These victims and their families are in my prayers.
Old Timer: people like you are the reason why I peruse the comments section. Thanks for the good info.
Old Timer's info refutes the supposition that this crash is the result of terrorist activity.
It used to be that passenger plane crashes were a rarity....nowadays, their frequency requires its own news section.....it scares me to fly these days.
This article was about people dying in a plane crash and my sympothies go out to their loved ones. For those who spout out about unrelated things, your all braindead and your parents should be jailed for giving life to such ignorance..since some want to go off topic then i wonder how many of the "NEGATIVES" commenting are conservatives and support GOP? I ask this because its hard for me to see a LIBERAL not be empathetic..all the independants out there should be looking at this behavior because the GOP congress has little to no regard nor empathy for human life and these nut job negative commentators are their supporters and they both share the same idiot ideology. Is this ideology what you want for your childrens futures? I would hope not!!
Spirit Airlines?? They fly 3rd world planes with the ashtrays welded shut on the arm rests.........OH, by they way, the article is not about POLITICS either so maybe your parents frogot the Trogan?? Yep!!
@thatgirlvkg I am now a fan. :) Well said.
As to your reply to Old Timer, what a horrible memory to have to live with. I hope that God grants you peace.
"It used to be that passenger plane crashes were a rarity....nowadays, their frequency requires its own news section.....it scares me to fly these days." - getaclue95
No, the reality is that planes crash less "these days" than in the past. The difference is that "these days" news is 24/7 and we have more ways of getting it than ever before.
Today we hear about every single crash, incident and excursion. There is nothing you don't hear about as long as you have cable TV and/or an internet connection.
@thatgirlvkg and @Old Timer very good informative and real life accounting posts, it is posts like this that give me hope that some other will think their posts out before they hit the post button.
thatgirlvkg, I think because you were involved in that flight, 225, you will always have a personal sadness inside that will never go away. However, I know the Muslim brotherhoods ultimate goal. And that is world domination for Allah... Sharia Law spreads and the people cant do anything about it. So altho some are prone to think this an accident/human error... there are those who know that the muslim brotherhood uses these tactics also as jihad terrorism. So we really dont know for sure. Joel Osteen says something really good this morning, "You have the right to your opinion, but I have the right to ignore it.'
Point taken and understood. It was really Leroy's comment that sparked this. Whether he was being sarcastic or not, it just felt to me it was not the time or the place to make his statement. Yes I will always have a personal sadness for something like this. For a brief moment I was part of every person on that flights (NW 255) life. I talked to them. I answered their questions and then I watched them die. I know their (Muslim's) ultimate goal but I was hoping that for at least 24 hours the focus could be on those who had died and not jihad.
The difference between myself, and the "Muslim Brotherhood" that wants world domination for Allah?
I still feel compassion for the innocent victims. One tour in Iraq, another in Afghanistan, and I still feel sad for their loss. (again. The Innocent)
When I have taken lives that were trying to take mine, I wanted them dead, they wanted me dead, I still felt for the human loss.
leroy2112. You are without a doubt a racist prick.
@leroy 2112
Hello Demon...
@thatgirllvkg,
Wow, Thanks for sharing. I like how you take not one but two storys about horrific plane crashes, where hundreds died, and totally make it about you.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here... But cosidering Leroy2112 has a picture of MacolmX next to his name I'd say his comment was meant to be sarcastic not offensive.
STexan: what does the TSA rant have to do with the article? Read it again. . The authorities stated the plane may have hit a "power line" in sunny clear weather.
My heart goes out the victim's families.
@Jay O - :). I'm glad you found it entertaining. Maybe you should consider getting a life. It was not about me but obviously you've become obsessed with me. You are probably one of the people who were complaining about being delayed because the airport was closed because of the crash. I'm also for same sex marriage so why don't you and Leroy get together. Idiot.
Hmmm, I seem to have struck chord. Now you think I'm obsessed with you, because its all about you, right? Classic narcissist.
Note to self
Do not fly on airplanes repaired or piloted by Nigers.
thatgirlvkg, for what it's worth, please don't blame yourself. No way you could ever have known what was going to happen. We aren't given that sort of foreknowledge; that just part of being flawed and limited humans.
That crack was mighty whitey of you, lokay5.
lokay5 - Well said.
I care too.
Why don't you join President Johathon in praying for the families of those who were lost? "He prayed that God Almighty would grant the families of the victims of the plane crash the courage and fortitude to bear their irreparable losses."
I care too. Too much hate in this world and not enough LOVE . . . some day we will have to answer for the hate you know.
My the Lord God bless the families who are now in need. May the lost ones rest in the comfort of the Almighty God. Amen.
so a plane crashed into a church? gotta love god sometimes...
Did anyone actually read the article?
"...the plane had been undergoing repairs for several weeks. The station manager protested it's use but the Indian management insisted it should fly." (Emphasis mine)
That doesn't even hint at it being a terrorist act. Dana apparently is an Indian airline since the article refers to "Indian management" (I didn't look it up) so one would presume that the pilots were most likely Indians, not Nigerians. In any event, given the above quote, it doesn't sound like pilot error.
It seems most likely that the plane had a serious mechanical problem.
Didn't they do "A Whiter Shade of Pale" in 1967?
With any luck that Esquire guy...who needs my help moving the life insurance pay-out from his business associate with no known living relatives who was killed in that car crash...was a passenger on that plane.
I'm sick of getting emails from that guy.
And if you think the TSA molesting 2 year old children and 90 year old women in wheelchairs is keeping you safe from terrorists.......you're an idiot. It is just smoke and mirrors.
The reality is that the *masses* are jetting around the world which makes it more difficult for the 13 bloodlines which control everything to keep the sheeple in line. Air travel has to be turned into a complete burden so the livestock will *choose* to just stay home. Increases in security will lead to increases in air fares which will also encourage the *little people* to stay put since the ever raising air fares will eat a month or two worth of their wages.
Man I don't think I've ever seen so many people gathered around a plane wreck.
"Did anyone actually read the article?"
Yes, over eight hours ago when it first ran - excluding numerous updates.
Interesting why didn't the plane crash into the pentagon look like that?
All You Haters on here I wish YOU would just go away far away...
" Leroy's comment was collapsed by the community so are you calling the community ignorant?"
I'm not going to let you define my argument - I didn't say anything like that. I do believe that you and Lois collapsed his comment though because you had no idea of the greater view some people have. Nothing is important to you and the 53 people who agreed with you that occurs outside your comfortable world.
As a concession to you though, it is pure ignorance to not care to know.
I care. Will you care if it turns out there were Europeans or Americans on the flight?
Sarcasm Lois. No need to be collapsing posts so early.
My heart goes out to each and every friend, acquaintance, playmate, fellow worker, and, especially family member, of the people who died in this tragedy. I have lost many family members and know the painful void that remains. Still, no one experience is comparable to another. Even saying we will prayer, seems so weak, yet ... praying for their strength and comfort.
One of the Nigerians on that plane, had promised to wire $24.5 million dollars into my checking account... I do care! Damn!
@Kathryne I'm truly sorry for your losses.
thumbs up to you and Lois B.
Hey everybody, having seen the picture on the MSNBC website of the Nigerian plane that just crashed, did you notice the big engine in the picture? On 9/11, a plane supposedly crashed into the Pentagon and onto a field in Pennsylvannia and guess what, no sign of an engine or wings or bodies in either crash. Wow. What happened to the engines, the seats the luggage? Want to know what they did find? I will tell you. They found 2 passports of the Arab hijackers in the PA. field. No engine, no seats, no bodies, but luckily, they found 2 passports, so they could ID the hijackers. Wow, what a lucky break. They also found a charred passport near the WTCs, that magically leapt out of a hijackers wallet, onto the street, wher it was found by a stranger in a suit, who handed it to a cop and walked away. Wow! What a lucky break.
In Nigeria, we have a great big engine and all sorts of other crash debris, but on 9/11 in America, nothing.
The passport of 9/11 hijacker Satam Al Suqami is reportedly
found a few blocks from the World Trade Center. [ABC News, 9/12/2001; Associated Press, 9/16/2001; ABC News, 9/16/2001] Barry Mawn, the director of the
FBI’s New York office, will say that police and the FBI find it during a “grid
search” of the area. [CNN, 9/18/2001] However a senior counsel to the
9/11 Commission will later claim the passport is actually discovered by a
passerby and given to a New York City Police Department detective, “shortly
before the World Trade Center towers collapsed.” [9/11 Commission, 1/26/2004] According to FBI
agent Dan Coleman, Al Suqami’s passport is handed to a New York City detective
who is “down there, trying to talk to people as they were coming out of the
buildings.” By the time the detective looks up again after receiving the
passport, the man who handed it to him has run off, “which doesn’t make sense,”
Coleman will say. The passport is then given to a detective on the Joint
Terrorism Task Force. Coleman will say that by this evening, “we realized… that
this was the passport of one of the people that headquarters had identified as
one of the 19 probable hijackers.” [France 5, 3/14/2010] Investigative journalist Nick
Davies will later write that he talked to “senior British sources who said they
believed that the discovery of a terrorist’s passport in the rubble of the Twin
Towers in September 2001 had been ‘a throwdown,’ i.e. it was placed there by
somebody official.” [Davies, 2009, pp. 248] The Guardian
will comment, “The idea that Mohamed Atta’s passport had escaped from that
inferno unsinged [tests] the credulity of the staunchest supporter of the FBI’s
crackdown on terrorism.” (Note that, as in this Guardian account, the passport
will frequently be mistakenly referred to as belonging to Atta, not Al Suqami.)
Kind of makes one wonder.
Heard after the crash:
"You got your chicken in my watermellon........Your watermellon is all over my chicken"
Ralph, there was nothing left of flight 93 because it was flying downwards at a very steep slope going hundreds or thousands of miles per hour. When it's going that fast, then when it crashes straight into the ground, you shouldn't expect anything left. The civilians that took over flight 93 meant for the plane to crash. This Nigerian plane was crash landing. The pilots probably tried to land the plane on the ground. The plane was not going as fast and the slope was not as steep as flight 93's.
many Planes over the years have nose dived into the ground WW2 ..Nam theres always
something on the ground, get Real .
Hundreds or thousands of miles per hour? I'll buy "hundreds." But as both a professional pilot and aerospace engineer grad, the "thousands" is stretching credibility just a smidgen.
Ronnie, you're comparing a 70 year old WW2 plane to a Modern Commercial airline jet, which makes no sense at all. WW2 planes don't have thousands of gallons of fuel on board. Also, commercial jets weigh a lot more than the heaviest of WW2 bombers, so if both of the planes were crashing, the commercial jet would be going a lot faster.
R.I.P!
Why does this stuff keep hapening even though the world is "getting safer"
who said the world is getting safer thats a joke who ever told you that is lying dont listen to statistics they try to make things sound better look around
The world's never safe, hun.
RIP to the passengers.
Because the planes are getting OLDER. Ever look at some of these planes.......they have hundreds of thousands of miles on them. If you knew how old and how many repairs some of these planes have, you would probably never fly again.
Most people would actually "freak" out if they found out how many "mechanical problems and near misses" there are every single day........ I had a relative who used to be head of flight ops, and his pager was going off constantly with near accidents........ He silenced his pager when I FREAKED.
Slinger speaks out of ignorance. Yes, many planes are older - both commercial as well as general aviation. But because they are required to undergo frequent and thorough inspections they are safe.
I worked for Boeing who as a company has some of the best safety records for any airplane company out there. The safety controls are best in the countries that have government agencies looking over the shoulders of the airline companies. All records of any repair on ALL Boeing planes flying are kept meticulously by Boeing with signs of mechanical and aging weaknesses trended and results sent to those owning Boeing planes, that doesn't mean those owning the plane(s) are conscientious....be careful of what airline company in 3rd world countries you are willing to fly.
gllg,
The FAA has found Nigeria's safety to be good enough, that their planes are allowed to fly direct to USA.
There are ways to make airplanes safer but it takes money and bandwidth.
An article in Wired last year discussed the development of real time flight telemetry to ground stations, via satellite, instead of hunting around for black box recorders in the wreckage after a disaster.
At some point in the future, it will be possible for ground crews to detect anomalies in flight data ahead of accidents, or even land the plane remotely like a drone in the event of pilot failure. But the technology is up against costs, an entrenched airline culture, and pilots who don't want their cockpit conversations monitored.
I speak out of ignorance? Yet you say in another post above that Nigerian airlines has a POOR safety record, and I am ignorant? I worked at Boeing as well, and I also saw safety reports from airlines. Aircraft may have inspections but not all have good safety records. You aren't that bright, Dumps.
The wear and tear on any aircraft is not measured by miles flown but by the cycle of one takeoff and one landing. There are ER (extended range) aircraft that have flown millions of miles with no incident. Besides, according to Mother Pope, it was a jihadist terror attack by the Muslim Brotherhood so the condition of the aircraft wouldn't mean anything. ( What a bunch of rubes!)
@Slinger - commenting on older aircraft that are in service. Besides working as a ticket agent I also worked in maintenance. Aircraft would have a complete over-haul every 6 months. That is not just an inspection. It consisted of breaking the aircraft down completely. Removing fuselage. Gutting it out. Dinol (rust inhibitor) would be removed so that the inspectors could look at every square inch of the aircraft. It was then put back together. Dinol reapplied. Insides replaced and it was good to go. This was done for every single aircraft. But we are talking about a flight that crashed today where 147 people died. It could have been a brand new plane or one that had accumulated hundreds of thousands of miles, the bottom line is that these people did not board that plane expecting to die. Whether it was foul play or an accident this is just sad.
On YouTube there are videos titled Air Disasters. It's amazing how crash investigators are able to solve how a crash occurred by sifting through crash debri and using black box data.
Slinger, so big deal - you worked for Boeing; does that make you an authority? Your remark that older planes are dangerous stands as an ignorant comment. And, oh, by the way, I too worked for Boeing. And, I'm a licensed pilot as well....
I am a licensed pilot as well, though I have never worked for any aircraft company.
From the 1976AD.com website:
What is known is the plane was a 21 Year Old McDonnell Douglas MD-83 with registration 5N-RAM at the time of its crash.
Built in 1990, it came into service in the Alaska Airlines fleet on November 13, 1990 with registration N944AS. The plane was retired by that airline in August 2008.
It was then acquired by Dana Air and delivery to that airline was completed between 17th and 20th of February 2009, via MIA-BDA-SMA-MAD-KAN (Miami-Bermuda-Santa Maria-Madrid-Kano).
Kano is a large city in northern Nigeria.
Older aircraft can be safe as long as they are well-maintained. There are plenty of much older Douglas DC-8 and Boeing 707 aircraft still in use around the world, mostly in use by cargo carriers, as well as Boeing 727 aircraft too, of which the absolute newest one is almost 40 years old now. Still, an older pressurized aircraft which has made a career of shorter routes could very well have issues with metal fatigue which could render the pressurized containment vessel unsafe. Such was the case with an Aloha Airways 737 some years ago, and more-recently a Southwest Airlines 737 had a containment rupture in a different place which was luckily non-fatal.
It has been reported that the aircraft used in yesterday's crash had been grounded for maintenance issues and that the pilot was flying it under protest. Doma Airlines is a small Nigerian domestic airline that until yesterday only had two older MD-83 aircraft.
Way to go once again Old Timer; thanks for the info!!
Those poor souls, may they rest in peace.
frank-2721258 banned for making racist remarks all over the place.
No, thank you.
Africans drive motor vehicles like maniacs and can't fly for s@#t. If I ever go to Africa I'll miss a lot of sights because I'll be on foot!
frank-
Wrong continent, Sir...ASIA...More to the point, Far East Asia to be specific...Their driving skills stink on ice...
:-)
[0.o]
West Africa is where one will find Nigeria
[o.o] You should invest in a globe!
@Edward & Corey I could be wrong but I think what o.o meant was that Asia was worse than Africa as far as drivers & flying. At least I hope that's what was meant! lol
So next time we have an air disaster in Europe, the US, or Australia, we should start going around saying how (presumably) European-descent pilots can't "fly for @#t"?
There are thousands of airplanes flying over Africa right now who will land safely. Did you really have a point?
Frank said:
I corrected him by saying Far East Asia has the worst drivers...You can catch a glimpse of Far East Asia driving skills by going to www.crazy@!$%#.com and about every other week, they post a horrific auto accident of some magnitude (usually involving mopeds)...Disturbing and amazing at the same time...
My geography is just fine, boys and girls; thanks, Deb for backing me up...I've been to around the world to include Nigeria in Western Africa; I know exactly where Nigeria is...Cheers!
Byron-
I would argue that it is combination of training, maintenance, and experience that drives the safety record of a specific airline and the countries that sponsor those airlines. As with any operation, the three facets of a successful flight involve cost, performance, and schedule. If you influence one, you inadvertently affect the other two. This could be in a positive or negative manner. And when you affect the cost, performance, or schedule of training, maintenance, and experience, you are destined to affect the flight envelope of an aircraft in motion. Statistically, worldwide- air travel is the safest form of transportation. But if you were to dissect that statistic by geography, cost, performance, and schedule, you will find that there ARE regions of the planet where your odds of having a departure from normal flight envelope and experience a rapid deceleration followed by dirt poisoning. Those regions can be categorized by Eastern Europe, Russia, China, Southeast Asia, and yes, Western Africa.
Don't get me wrong; we have accidents here in North America too. But again statistics play in part here: Even in our @!$%#ty economy, we still possess one of the busiest airspaces on the planet. But our communication barriers are easier to overcome than from a foreign country. After all, we built a majority of the aircraft in use today. To interpret (even loosely) the training orders and technical manuals might get lost during the operation or the maintenance of the aircraft. I am not saying that happened here with this mishap, but it is something to consider...It could have just been bad luck, but I am leaning on the combination thingy...
Statistically, there are a LOT (I won't say thousands) of aircraft operating in Africa. I will say that a majority of the aircraft operating in Africa airspace is on average 20 years older than north American or European aircraft. The reason why is because they cannot afford the new aircraft so they buy second-hand aircraft from those airlines that can afford to upgrade to the new and improved models. To recoup some of the cost of procuring the new aircraft, those airlines sell to third world countries that cannot afford the latest models.
CORRECTION: I will say that a majority of the aircraft operating in Africa airspace are on average 20 years older than north American or European aircraft.
:-)
who sid africans were flying?
Excellent point. The pilots may very well have been European or American.
All the assumptions that something devious was going on, until the cause of the incident is released, all this negative chatting is mood point and of no value.
I feel for the passengers as they were on their way to someware, and not exxpecting this to happen.
I know that whenever there's an airplane crash, there is always a lot of instant speculation about bombs, missiles, or some other manifestation of terrorism, but terrorist acts account for a very small percentage of aviation mishaps. The mix of inadequate maintenance of antiquated aircraft, lax piloting skills, an environment of practically non-existent regulatory oversight and very sketchy aviation infrastructure and navigational support is a far more likely culprit in most of the third world. There are very good reasons why many African airlines aren't allowed into European airspace.
The duct tape and string might have given out.
I once flew with a pilot for Air Namibia who repaired a wing flap with duct tape. 19-seat Beechcraft on a charter run that was full of local politicos. He said the tape worked fine until a couple of the uneasy bureaucrats looked out their window and started seeing loose tape ends fluttering from the wing.
Some years ago I flew on a twin seater (piper cub) from S Lake Tahoe to Reno that had quite a bit of duct tape on one wing. No problem. The wing was properly repaired at the Reno airport and on our return trip the only duct tape to be found was on the pilots seat.
Really? Why would you even get on that plane? And why did the authorities allow the pilot to get off the ground with that plane like that? Is ductape an authorized "repair" tool? Gesh!
I believe NASA astronauts used to make a repair on an early space mission. No joke.
Mythbusters built an entire plane out of duct tape. Tested out fine.
Sounds like karma. A lot of scams come from Lagos, Nigeria.
A lot of scams come from Washington D.C. So?
I'm betting none of the victims of this accident were involved in any kind of scam.
I may be a bit reactive as I was based in Lagos for a while, flying for a private company, and liked the Nigerians quite well.
African airlines start out with good planes but many have very poor maintenance records and insufficient ground control. Kenya Airlines, SAA, and Ethiopian Airlines are about the best of the lot. The main airport in Nairobi is a national joke. Additionally, you have a host of starter airlines that are insufficiently funded. Charging very little allows local people to fly, but in turn there is correspondingly less money available for upkeep, staff, etc.
153 people dead - RIP....
Still, gotta wonder how many goats and chickens were onboard that didn't make it either....
Note to self: Do not fly in Nigeria.
Then again what am I doing in Nigeria?
My instant speculation when a plane from a 3rd world country crashes is pilot error or poor maintenance.
I feel for the families of those who lost loved ones. Those who are here typing nonsense and not even showing a kind of emotions to lives lost i think have no human conscience.I grew up there and even know the area so well. The large building next to the plane belongs to my uncle and I hope as the news unfold and I keep in touch that he is safe with his family and neighbours whose buildings have been unfortunately touched.
I expect some Americans and those who I cant figure where they are from to learn to feel for human lives when they read about people in accidents.I feel hurt to read how people comment on issues as sensitive as this. What if it happens here in America with your own family members in the flight and you read about people commenting negatively?
The moral attitude of people is going down the drain in this society that i used to like. Not anymore.
While I share in your condolences for those who died and their families, I must confess I specifically came to the comments just to see whether they would be positive or negative. I guessed negative and I was right.
It really shouldn't be much of a surprise to expect some Americans to not feel for those who aren't American dying in a plane. When the tsunami/earthquake hit Japan, I came up on by accident DISGUSTING posts from people's Facebook statuses and I have quotes because it applied to a class I took and I brought to share and discuss. Here's three:
My personal favorite because this clown is an all-around idiot not thinking about his own country, the U.S. atrocities:
Riiiiight........so I wonder what the U.S. will get for dropping TWO Manhattan projects on Japan.....
God knows if this plane was full of Americans, these comments would be FLOODED with "RIP" "My heart goes out to their families." "United we stand" "God Bless America and no place else" (Head of State movie quote which is true in some aspects) blah blah blah blah blah. But for a bunch of Nigerians?! A bunch of NON-Americans?! PLAH-LEEZE.
It's pathetic and it's attitudes like those on this board makes me realize why some were happy when 9/11 happened. I didn't get it then, it's still and will always be wrong to say such thing, but now I understand. Most of the people in this country are so self-centered it's just disgusting. I try everyday to represent the tiny fraction of the United States that has the common sense to respect those inside and outside the country because I would want them to do the same for me.
You would be surprised at how few non-Americans were happy when 9/11 happened. The video of "Palestinians dancing in the streets" were actually hard-line Israelis who were very pleased that "now Americans know how we feel."
The outpouring of sympathy from the rest of the world was heartwarming. If we (collectively) hadn't thought of that sympathy as political capital to be spent away by attacking the wrong country, we might well still have it.
who @!$%#ing cares!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i care
I care too.
@Timothy Any decent human being.
Apparently you care since you took the time to post your asinine comment on this story. Little bit of advice:
move on to the next report AND remember the rule of three......
Just saying.
If you don't care, why are bothering to tell us you don't care?
Oh, for got to mention that Dana Air just lost 1/3 of their fleet. this airlines had a total of 3 MD 80's.
efing racist deserve a bullet in the head everyone of them, that is why i love that our President Obama makes them cringe at the near site of Him. Racist internet scumbags have no place in a civilized society.
RIP to the Nigerans from a real American!!!
Government is not reliable
Especially when it is fueled by religion, muslim, Hindi, Christian or otherwise.
true
R.I.P.
OMG,This is so bad.
As mean as it is to say but if they were Nigerian people I have no sympathy for them. Those people are all crooks scammers etc. Now it's 150 less people to worry about being swindlers!!
That was a mean thing to say. A lot of scam come out of Nigeria, but not ALL Nigerians are crooks and scammers. The same way that the American street gang violence is the highest rate in the world, but not ALL Americans are gang thugs.
So not only are you mean and inhumane, you also lack basic common sense.
Condolences and prayers go to the victims' family and friends.
147 people feared dead in Nigerian plane crash says Nigerian official
Is this the same Nigerian official who keeps sending me e-mails telling me I'm rich?
LMAO!!!
To soon. Your comment will be funny in about a week. Not today though.
Wondering if looting is taking place
Well Duh Does a bear due his duty in the forest?
Yeah, check the mail, cash soon as important to do so, for trouble $500 for you to keep, so as to send rest of money important to me. signed: Nigel Scamarami
Only 150.... seems like a lot all at once... but's it's just a drop in the bucket compared to how many people die in this country because of alcohol.
are you brain dead ? or drunk ! alcoholism isn't an accident, and nothing to do with this story...
geez, back to your trailer
only an @!$%# drinks till he cant drink no more and then does it the very next day. If you have no self control and cant decide, oh I think Ive had ebough then your a weak person. This whole addiction thing is because your too weak to stop and lack self control.
Like steve said go back inside the trailer and close the door, the stink is comming out.
In the U.S.(2010) there were roughly 13,000 automobile fatalities. Approximately 3,000 were killed by drunk drivers.
