Report: Egypt's Mubarak in declining health

Mohammed Al-Law / AP

Officials say former President Hosni Mubarak's health has deteriorated in the three days since a court sentenced him to life imprisonment in connection to the killing of hundreds of protesters.

Hosni Mubarak, the former Egyptian president whose ouster triggered revolutions across the Middle East, has become dangerously ill, security officials told the Associated Press.

Officials at the Torah prison south of Cairo, where Mubarak, 84, is being held, said he suffered from shock and was experiencing breathing problems. They said Mubarak needed a respirator five times on Wednesday.

Mubarak, who had been in power for 30 years, was sentenced to life on Saturday after he was convicted for his role in the killing of hundreds of protesters during the uprising that ultimately swept him out of office.

Egypt’s state news agency said Mubarak had been in a military hospital during his trial before being flown to prison. On Wednesday, the news agency said he suffered from nervous shock. He spent more than two hours on the aircraft that transported him to prison, saying he was suffering from health problems.

Mubarak has spent the last 10 months in private hospital rooms, according to independent news reports cited by The New York Times, but has been healthy enough to swim every day and go for walks.

Egypt’s Tahrir protesters take on Mubarak’s man

After Mubarak was sentenced -- and his sons were exonerated -- protesters descended on Tahrir Square, the focal point of the 2011 revolution to speak out against the former president's chosen replacement, Ahmed Shafiq, Mubarak's appointed prime minister.

The Egyptians didn't know how "good" they had it with Mubarak in Power.

Just look at all the unsavory Dictators still slaughtering their own people in the masses---

Now, most likely or it is true, The Muslim Brotherhood have taken his place. The people have been uprising again---Mubarak, replaced by a group that is worse than he for the Egyptian people.

It is better he slips away, than spend time being tortured in a prison of Hell.

Compare Assad to Mubarak, compare Mubarak to Qaddafi--compare, compare all Middle Eastern Dictators---

Beheading and torture of innocent civilians, including little children, is their best attempt at having the riches of the Oil Rich Countries. Nothing for the civilians--at least when Mubarak was in Power, all Americans were free to see all that Egypt had to offer, the Ancient Pyramids, and other ancient historical places---

Why does Assad of Syria still survive?

No Body going to miss him.. he was in power for over 3 decades hello!!! what does this tell you? very selfish person and think only for himself and never gave other a chance to become a president and to make a difference! he thought he was untouchable like Mafia people.

I have no respect for people like him because he never had respect for his people.

I hope he suffers more before dying!

where is all that power now to help you?

Marchant : you cannot compare any one right now to Moubarak because it s too early! and you know what! it s up to the people of Egypt since they never had a chance to speak up their mind and they know better than us why they had to get rid off Moubarak!

Maybe Moubarak was good with other countries but he was not good with his people!

His People comes first not other countries... that s what makes a president be a good leader

We have seen this ploy before, it has been used many times before in order to allow for a criminal to be released early on the basis of declining health. I see the government trying to play this game to the entire world and hope it sticks.

I'm hoping that you mistyped when you wrote that you hope "the ploy" sticks.

I hope it doesn't stick. I hope he is executed before the new year. One reason America is hated in that region is our support for dictators like Mubarak. We proclaim that we want to spread Democracy around the world, but only if it means countries pick the people we want in power.

He's faking it. I'll bet he is willing himself to die so he doesn't have to spend the rest of his miserable life in a hellish prison he created.

    Jag6:

    Faking it?

    NOT.

The Dictators of the Middle East are Powerful. When brought down, they do not have the Survivor skills to live when everything is taken away from them.

He will most likely pass away very soon. Believe what this article is conveying. Mubarak is very ill at 84 years old.

jag61082: I completely agree with you.

There is no f*ckng way Mubarak is as sick as they claim. The SOB is wearing sunglasses because he knows that one look into his eyes will reveal that not only is he NOT sick, but he is healthier than the average Egyptian, regardless of age.

Hang him... hang him high. Show the world that the life of a dictator always ends with a stretched neck, or an additional hole in the head - like Libya's Gaddafi.

He's 84, what'd you expect? he widely went above the average male age in Egypt i'm sure. he's had it real good compared to most. Should we feel sorry for him?

Who cares? Mubarak may have been bad - but what's in store for Egypt is far worse.

Just wait until good old fashioned Islamic Sharia law comes to "progressive" Egypt, with the attending misogyny, hangings of homosexuals, beatings for the most trivial of offenses, along with killings of Jews, Christians, atheists, heretics, comic book readers, those who dare to smile, etc.

      Isn't democracy wonderful?

I think that he should give away his money. it would show that he loved egypt. I don't think he should be locked up. maybe a house arrest. this man worked with and listened to america and now everyone treats him like garbage.

Really...the man is a monster and thief. He should NOT be given special priviledges due to illness. He needs to go to jail and stay there till he's good and dead. Egypt has suffered enough by his hand. He's stolen millions and millions of dollars from his people and now, he's fragile. Well....too bad a$$hole. You should be put in front of a firing squad and shot.

Monster? Dont you realize he ruled over monsters and the only way his people didnt kill each other is for him to rule with an iron fist. Arams dont understand anything but strength. What we have seen since the arab spring is the dictators have been replaced with the muslim brotherhood who dont think twice about chopping off an arm a leg or a head. At least Mubarak was able to work with the usa and israel and the egyptians got financial assistance.
