Contrary to popular belief, the police don't know exactly where people are all the time. People move in and out of areas.

And what records would you be thinking of? Voter registration... great if you're a registered voter. Drivers license... great if you have a license, and kept your address up to date. Sex offender registry... great if your a sex offender that actually registers. Actors guild.... great if you're a member and again if you keep them informed of your whereabouts. Of course, they could start with interviewing all the porn actors and see if they've ever had any "interactions" with the individual.

So, in reality, there is no way for them to know where you are. It might be possible to backtrack forensically IF you have a viable starting point, but real life isn't CSI as shown on TV.

If this guy is convicted and given a life sentence in Canada we should just let them keep him. Canada will not extradite him to the US unless the US government waives the death penalty, so we could not do any more to him than the Canadians. Why should we waste our tax dollars putting the guy on trial and keeping him housed, fed, and given medical care in a US prison if the Canadians are already doing it. The need for some DA to get some press coverage and up his conviction stats is not reason enough to spend the money. If the police are certain this guy is the killer then they should just close the case and let Canada bear the expense of taking care of him for the rest of his life.

In case why bother with asking about where he lived, wouldn't you just have them ask him if he committed this other crime? AussieRob, they have to get the Canadian Police permission to question him. Magnotta videotaped the murder he committed in CANADA. If he committed the murder in LA, we don't know if he videotaped that or not. It might surprise you to know that if a person is in custody, say in Rhode Island, and the Massachusetts police want to question him or her, the Massachusetts police has to get Rhode Island's permission.

I'm in Canada and I can tell you that we don't want him here either!!!! Our judicial system is an absolute joke. Life means 25 years with parole likely after 2/3 of that is served. Our prisoners here have it better than many free citizens.

I've seen thie video. It's gruesom. Even that is an under statement. I vote for pushing him out of the plane over the Atlantic, or sending him to China for the Chinese Government to dole out a suitable punishment. I doubt they woul be as lenient as Canada.

They need to compare the two case files to be sure that both bodies were killed by the same killer. The MO is similar enough that they feel it could be a possibility, but they need to also look at the specific cuts, was he dismembered pre or post mortem, what instrument was used...etc. They want to examine the suspect, determine if he is a serial killer or was this thing in Canada a one time deal? Where else has he been. Was the corpse in LA cannibalized? did they find the whole body or just the head? Maybe they are hoping he can lead them to the rest of the man.

There's a lot more to determining if this guy killed the one in LA than the fact that both bodies had been dismembered and he lived on the west coast for a time... That's just circumstantial and would never hold-up in court.
