Reports: UK PM David Cameron leaves 8-year-old daughter in pub

Prime Minister David Cameron admitted that he, his wife and their entourage left their 8-year-old daughter in a pub after a recent Sunday lunch and didn't realize it until they arrived back at the government headquarters. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

LONDON -- British Prime Minister David Cameron and his wife left their eight-year-old daughter in a countryside pub by mistake after lunch on Sunday, according to reports.

Cameron rushed back minutes later to pick her up, the tabloid Sun newspaper reported

Nancy had gone to the bathroom when rides were being organized to return home, the newspaper said.

The prime minister's office said Cameron and his wife Samantha were "distraught" when they realized Nancy wasn't with them, according to the BBC.

The Camerons had been having Sunday lunch with two other families near the prime minister's country home, according to reports. The prime minister went home in one car thinking that Nancy was with his wife and two other children in a second car, the Sun reported.

The child, who was looked after by staff at the 16th-century pub after her parents had left, was separated from her family for 15 minutes, the Sun reported.

The Sun quoted a pub "insider" as saying: "You'd have thought someone would have done a headcount or something."

The incident, which was widely reported in the British media, could prove especially embarrassing for the Conservative leader as it came just a day before the government relaunched a so-called troubled families program. The government says 120,000 troubled families are at the root of high amounts of crime and social disorder throughout the country.

"I have never left my child ever" really?? A few minutes with a bad uncle is all it takes and sometimes the most protective parents do the most damage. seems like you have it all in control, but life happens!! .. poor kids need to know how to take care of themselves because mommy and daddy can not watch your every move..horrible the folks here that put down these obviously caring parents!! Oh by the way you folks who don't travel overseas stop making fun that it was a pub!! pubs are not the seedy bar we have here they are family friendly .. you can buy a pint but you get to have lunch there too!! This is a good learning lesson for their daughter to learn their cell phone number and how resourceful she can be. Lets not give children the message they are helpless.

Why is this a news story? Even Mary and Joseph left Jesus all alone in Jerusalem for three days.

With all the stupid comments if these people vote no wonder our country is in a mess. Please...just read the comments it is a hoot how some people think.

Well, I think the point here is He thought she was with his wife in another car, and vice versa. Guess what prime minister or not, they are human and prone to the less that perfect parenting that all people are. I see this as an error, and embarassment, but if this was the "Jones" next door to you, it would be an eyeball roll, a few jokes at the next cookout and the end of the matter. I think if the whole family was in one car, I am sure a headcount would have been easier. Hey, they are humans as well as political. At least they didn't leave her on top the car like a pizza box...

Years ago, my family travelled from Florida to Colorado to a District Attorneys Conference (district attorney was an elected position)-6 children, 2 adults in a station wagon pulling a pop-up camper. We stopped for groceries in a town in Oklahoma. One brother became absorbed with reading the backs of cereal boxes-he was left behind. It was not until we stopped at a nearby campground, put up the tents, started the fire and cooked and ate the hot dogs for dinner that we realized that my brother was missing-there were 2 hot dogs left over. The rest of us vyed for the hot dogs. My Dad took off in the station wagon with the back window down-what a mess the next day. The store manager had found my brother sitting outside the store at closing time. He offered to take my brother home, which my brother told was not likely, the police were called. The officer bought him his first soda (my parents were very strict about the care of teeth) and then waited for my Dad to realize one of his sons was missing. We had a check off buddy system, which obviously did not work that day. We made national news and my Dad was roundly ribbed at the convention and introduced as the one who had so many sons, he could afford to miss one. All of us have said that if child services existed back then, we all would have been raised on foster homes, but would have turned out much worse than we did. My brother can still tell you what he was doing reading the cereal boxes-he was comparing weight by price to determine the cheapest by serving.

So big deal. It is obvious he thought she was with someone else. This is just some overachiever in the sad sad press trying to make something out of nothing and insinuating he left her there on purpose? Pitiful.

This reminds me of another British story ...Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing..... I have left a kid or two of mine here or there by accident over the years. It's not like they left her and didn't figure it out for 2 hours.... bfd. Slow news day obviously.

With the World in the toilet financially. This is news? O-K, The Media and the busy bodies will have a field day. The PM of the U.K. does not have a relaxed schedule/job. Husband and wife get to spend time together and a mixup occured. Thank goodness Obama has the Secret Service to keep everyone in tow.

Much ado about a famous family having a mishap. Can we now talk about how each Country is going to survive more that a few more years before all you-know-what breaks loose because of irresponsible borrowing from our Grand kids future.

This is all just fluff. Must be a slow day. Is this supposed to be informative news???? Like I care????

Unlike in America, the eight year old probably had a good time in a quaint old pub. Being fussed over by the locals. Which her family is familiar with. In other words, no harm done. And not really news worthy.

                            Glad she's safe.

PM and wife or not, this is inexcusable. Parents are responsible for their children and children should be their first priority. In the U.S. they would most likely have been charged with neglect and the child would have been at least temporarily taken into custody by the DCS; that is if they were "ordinary" citizens. No doubt a VIP would get away with this as the PM did. (Sorry for all the TLA's - three letter acronyms!)

This coming from a person that has never had a child, or watched on. They can get LOST in a second. Just blink ONCE in the mall.

the PM travels with a full entourage of bodyguards...(British version of the secret service)

it's the bodyguards who left the little girl behind...but no one is mentioning this...less newsworthy?

so the PM takes the heat

bet some heads rolled over this gaff...can you just imagine if she had been kidnapped by terrorists?

talk about major dumb security people....

2 times when our children were small, one or another got left behind with an improper head count or someone thought someone else had the child in their car. Once involve a large family gathering with small cousins and friends riding together and wasn't noticed until we all got to the park a mile away. The second involved just our family in a pickup with a camper with one child being left at the pizza place we stopped at for lunch for over half an hour before that was figured out. We thought our 4 yr old was in the back with the other kids. He wasn't and we didn't notice until another child knocked on the divider in the truck and asked if the child was in front with us. And don't lecture me unless you have had multiple kids in tow. Distractions and/or confusion happens. Get over it.
