Sister Janet Mock, executive director of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), is among a delegation meeting Cardinal William Joseph Levada on Tuesday.
ROME - What do American nuns do when they are accused of being radical feminists? They respond as radical feminists might: by challenging the male authority face-to-face.
Sister Pat Farrell, head of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), the umbrella group that represents 80 percent of the U.S.'s 57,000 Catholic nuns, traveled to Rome to confront accusations that her organization promotes "radical feminist themes incompatible with the Catholic faith."
Farrell met American Cardinal William Levada, head of the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, on Tuesday. The gathering was aimed at reconciling their differences, but it has the potential to permanently alienate many American nuns from the Holy See.
From the beginning, the meeting was fixing to be a titanic clash between strong-willed servants of God.
On one side next to Farrell sat Sister Janet Mock, the group’s executive director.
Opposite them, Cardinal Levada was joined by Vatican-appointed Archbishop Peter Sartain, who has been named to oversee the overhaul of the the LCWR. Sartain has been given the power to rewrite the group's statutes, its meeting agendas and liturgical texts.
US priests reportedly behind Vatican crackdown on nuns
Alessandro Speciale, the Vatican Correspondent for Religion News Service, said the discussions – held in private – were unlikely to have been amicable.
The Catholic Church accused the nation's largest organization of American nuns of espousing "radical feminist" ideas. MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell discusses the charges with Sister Jeannine Gramick, who was once silenced by the Vatican, and Jeff Stone, communications director of Dignity USA.
"It will (have been) a deaf argument," he told NBC News. "They will both try to force their message across, but it's unlikely to be a friendly chat."
Both sides emerged from Tuesday's meeting without giving much away.
Farrell told journalists outside the Vatican she had an "open dialogue" with the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and found the support in America "very affirming."
Likewise, the Vatican did not go into much detail on the meeting's outcome, but said the gathering had happened in an "atmosphere of openness and cordiality."
Catholic nuns group 'stunned' by Vatican scolding for 'radical feminist' ideas
What is almost certain is that Farrell, a determined representative of thousands of American nuns, asked Levada to reconsider the damning assessment his office issued about her group. The report followed a two-year investigation into the nuns' outspoken social and political outreach, which has often differed from the Vatican's official position.
Tensions between the American nuns and the Vatican have been simmering for years, and stem from the open discussion among LCWR's members of sensitive issues such as gay marriage, contraception and on the ordination of women.
On April 18, the Vatican harshly criticized the group, and accused it in a statement of perpetuating "a distorted ecclesiological vision, and (having) scant regard for the role of the Magisterium as the guarantor of the authentic interpretation of the Church's Faith."
Magisterium, the official teaching authority of the Catholic Church, is made-up of the pope and bishops. Ecclesiological refers to the nature and functions of the church.
Catholic heavyweights challenge Obama rule on contraception
In his first ever Twitter message, Pope Benedict XVI announced a new online portal that aggregates the Vatican's various media on one website. The Tweet from the pope was sent from and ipad.
The Vatican then appointed a trio of bishops to deal with the differences with the LCWR.
The LCWR's official response came more than a month later, but it was just as strong-worded.
The nuns said that the Vatican's charges are based "on unsubstantiated accusations and the result of a flawed process that lacked transparency. Moreover, the sanctions imposed were disproportionate to the concerns raised and could compromise their ability to fulfill their mission. The report has furthermore caused scandal and pain throughout the church community, and created greater polarization."
Whatever happened behind closed doors at the Vatican on Tuesday, the meeting will eventually help the world's estimated 1.2 billion Catholics understand whether the Vatican and the American nuns can reach a compromise – or, as seems more likely, remain poles apart.

Go ladies!!!!
Yes! Go nuns! Their actions follow Jesus' teachings way more than the Vatican's actions do.
I'm pretty wary of Christianity as a whole, but from what I read on this issue the nuns seem to personify the good points that come with it and the cardinals/pope/Vatican is more concerned with spreading hate/limiting women's rights.
It's a bit amusing to see the good/evil sides of the same religion sparring.
I hope she throws a shoe at him!!!!!
I cannot deny the teachings of the Catholic Church.
'cause I get hungry on Sunday and want my white circle cracker and grape juice shot!
No matter how this turns out it will be a black eye for the Vatican.
Bad move on their part
The irony of it all; Nuns DOING the work of Jesus, by providing assistance to the poor and and showing love, and it being called 'political' and 'against Church teachings' by the Vatican, and yet the Vatican shows distain for those 'good deeds,' ARE political and go against Christ's teachings.
The vatican guys had better be careful. Those sisters have knuckle-rapping rulers and know how to use them. Plus, they'll give the boys a good long stint staying after to clean those chalkboard erasers.
The most perfect example of Public Relations Suicide - take one of the Worlds most highly respected Icons - if not THE most respected by The Faithful and Atheist alike - and publicly insult them. What a dumb, dumb, way to resolve an internal issue of Theological Doctrine.
Then to cap it, a Senior American crazy Bishop goes Public comparing the President of the United States with Hitler ? This is way beyond Partisan politics of Left V Right. Its illustrating the very reason that the Church - - any Religion - - MUST stay out of Politics, the angst and sheer anger they can stir up is beyond anything acceptable to any society, let alone their own alledged neutral stance, and totally destroys their obligation to stick to Theological, matters outside of Secular Politics.
Stamping Publically on a World respected Icon, followed by comparing POTUS with Hitler, pretty well seals it for any sane human being. They are creating all by themselves a split in the Catholic Church of such a depth and bredth, I cant believe they realise, otherwise they wouldnt be doing this. Our of touch, still in the Middle Ages, with the intelligence and gravitas of morons.
Stick to your Guns Ladies, go get 'em, they need dragging into the 21st Century, and need a lesson on how to co-exist with other Human Beings who reside in the Real World beyond The Vatican's Walls.
These blinkered Vatican numbskulls are out of their tiny minds.
I know nothing of catholicism. I get the inpression the Italien catholics at the Vatican are sorta like muslims in that, women are slaves, cattle, pigs, dogs, or whatever animal you wish to apply and have no say, no rights, no nothing. Is that about it, or not?
Kick that old fart's @$$!
Of all of the problems in the world-how does the Vatican consider nuns anywhere near the top?
Nuns are the members of the Catholic Church who implement the mission of Christ. They heal the sick in Catholic hospitals and clinics around the world. They feed the poor at soup kitchens and shelters. They give their lives in service to the mission of Jesus, and are treated horribly by the Catholic Church. Not only in this instance, but everyday in the forms of their living conditions and retirement.
Nuns are out in the real world-seeing real world problems. They are too busy healing the sick to focus on who is paying for contraception. They are feeding the poor instead of condemning masturbation.
These nuns are doing the work of God. I'm not sure what the Vatican is doing....
Eh, that would be a gross over-simplification, tstucker. The Catholic Church is a bit more evolved than that, but they do have limited roles for women within the church structure itself (you can blame some passages from Paul about the structure of a church for that). I wouldn't go so far as to say they don't believe in rights for women at all.
Then again, I'm not Catholic. I'm basing all of this off of my multitude of Catholic friends in my area.
Organized Religion is based off fear.....When will people grow up!
So a man is in charge of the official interpretation of holy scriptures? So the Catholic Church is telling me that I'm too dumb to be able to interpret God's word? No wonder I gave up on religion, because I can interpret my own ideas and convey them without having to go through channels. I see a major split coming soon for the Catholic Church, and when it does, it sure isn't going to be pretty.
ghargamell...since you obviously not "religious" noone much gives a damn what you have to offer on the subject. Have we given you any of our thoughts on how you should celebrate your Agnostic or Atheist sway?? NO??? Then we obviously don't care......azzholes like you only cry out for salvation at the very end. Good luck with that.
Expect to see a change in opinion of these nuns, once people learn that they oppose the Ryan plan and have said "if everyone shares there is enough for everyone"... followed with supporting Biblical text of Jesus sharing (socialism) bread with hungry masses.
Once the right hears of this, they will crucify (no pun intended) these nuns as "socialists".
'the cardinals/pope/Vatican is more concerned with spreading hate/limiting women's rights." Almost sounds like a some arib religions ...And here I thought modern religion was for equal rights..Except for certain sects of course.
Time to fold the vatican tent.
Smoke and mirrors bs while the tranfixed minions hand over their dollars.
Sartain has the power to rewrite to statutes and objectives of the LCWR. Does not sound good for the nuns.
As a Catholic I take on faith that only the pope speaks in matters of faith and morals and that he is inspired by the Holy Spirit and is infallible. If you do not accept this teaching it is time for YOU to leave the church and find a new one. I suggest the yellow pages mine has five pages of churches to choose from. We will wish YOU good luck as YOU leave.
lonereb: My I feel sorry for you. My God forgot to give you a brain so you read the Bible for yourself, and to think for yourself. As far as Ii'm concerned everyone, especially women, should leave the Catholic Church. The church rich in assets and a people who are very poor. No thanks, and I hope the Catholic Church will be gone in not too many more years. The Baptists along with it.
May all of the American Nuns, walk out of the Catholic Church.
lonereb - I am also a Catholic but i do not take the Pope as infallible. Nor do I believe in every single thing the church teaches. Ineed ot follow my GOD GIVEN free wil on a number of matters especially whne i see the Church perverting the teachings of Christ in order to exert more control over people and inorder to collect more of the almighty cash. As far as the Pope being infallible, check out some of the things Popes have done in the name of God, the Crusades, murder, rape.
Pope Alexander VI fornicated with his sisters and daughter,
Pope Urban II was the benchmark for where the crimes against humanity and God became genocidal. ope Urban II ordered the slaughter of roughly ten million people where there were men and women but mostly children.
No human is infallible. And these people hav ethe guts to criticize and demean the only people in ht echurch that are actually doing Christ's work here on earth. They should be ashamed of themselves.
Then you have a major problem ahead of you - because even the Catholic Church do not hold The Pope as infallible in everything he says. It was not declared Dogma until 1870 at the first Vatican Council for a start, albeit they declared Papal infallibility as retrospective .... huh :)
You can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times Papal Infallibility has been invoked since 1870, and none on record as retrospective.
In addition, before The First Vatican Council of 1870, belief in papal infallibility was not a defined requirement of Catholic faith. The Church therefore accepted the oath required of Catholics in Ireland from 1793 for admittance to certain positions and which stated that "it is not an article of the Catholic Faith, neither am I thereby required to believe or profess that the Pope is infallible"
The Irish bishops repeated their acceptance in a 25 January 1826 pastoral address to the Catholic clergy and laity in Ireland, stating: "The Catholics of Ireland not only do not believe, but they declare upon oath ... that it is not an article of the Catholic faith, neither are they required to believe, that the Pope is infallible, and that they do not hold themselves 'bound to obey any order in its own nature immoral, though the Pope or any ecclesiastical power should issue or direct such an order; but, on the contrary, that it would be sinful in them to pay any respect or obedience thereto."
Seems quite a turnabout 100 years later to the declaration of infallibility in 1870. Does the Pope speak for the Catholic Church - that's for sure - does he speak Gods word, many believe so.
He is not however considered by the Institution of The Catholic Church as infalliable in all things. Its not his word that is counted as infallible - the latter is a formal process, it is not considered automatic for every utterance he makes. They were not that stupid in 1870 - its called a "get out clause". Does The Pope lead The Catholic Faith - indisputably so without a doubt - but be careful about declaring his infallibility throughout recorded time in all things and all His utterances - it is not so, and never been held to be so by The Catholic Church.
All that does not push back on The Pope - just puts it all into the correct perspective, states the formal Catholic Doctrine held by The Vatican, not exaggerated glorification.
Death throes...I love it...
So for those who might know; what happens if the nuns don't come to some type of agreement with the church (which seems exclusively controlled by males)? Does it matter? Will the nuns just keep doing their own thing, or will the church "excommunicate" them? What happens if the church looses all their nuns? I don't imagine there are a huge number of women on a waiting list to become nuns.. and I would guess the pay isn't what keeps them around. It seems like an area where compromise would be needed, but my guess is the church doesn't compromise, especially with women, on matters like this. And both sides seem to have dug in...
I'm thinking if the two sides just hooked up behind those closed doors they'd all be happier ofr it. Ans the nuns could get their way cause that's the way it usually goes in a hook up.
Seriously, this "church" accepts molestation of children, putting down of women, and financial corruption as the norm and their due. Who could possible take them seriously?
Ultimately they can be excommunicated for disobeying The Vatican. I suspect The Catholic Church - even as we all type - is also piling in there behind closed doors, on whose side - The Vatican's or the LCWR, remains to be seen.
As to what will actually happen - flip a coin, there are various levels of "punishment" for "disobedience"
I personally believe - just a personal opinion - that the LCWR will end up with the equivalent of a formal Vatican Reprimand as part of a face saving deal - I dont believe The LCWR will back down. The only question left for the Vatican II opponents inside The Vatican is how do they save face - the excommunication of 56,000 Nuns is unthinkable, it will destroy The Vatican, and cause potential Schism - the first in 600 years since "The Great Eastern Schism" resulted in two Popes being declared - they fudged that as well in the end - a compromise candidate Martin V was agreed on - and all of a sudden all became pals again :)
I suspect a similar face saver will occur this time round with The LCWR. If they dont - that will be incredibly stupid, and will result ina formal split in the end, I dont think Catholics will stand for the LCWR being heavily - note the word Heavily - punished.
We shall see as they say.
@BK-3328579
LOL - the Church has been doing this exact thing for over 2000 years. Remember reading about the the Crusades or the Spanish inquisition - just small events where Catholics were not just giving their thoughts, but forcing them upon other people.
The fact that anyone still considers feminism "radical" is just so... quaint.
the vatican is acting like like islam when it comes to the way they treat women in the RC church. the nuns are working with the people as christs teachings dictated . the vatican does not go by the word of god or the word and works of jesus christ . they have perverted the word and teachings to make what they do seem OK but it does not. the men of the church are only out for themselves they want the control over the people , the power and the anything they can get thier greedy hands on . they are trying to take over the world as they have always done although they can no longer kill and torture people to make them become catholics . they are becoming more political and have NO business doing that as in america there is seperation of church and state . the men of the church are in alot of trouble over the molesting of only god knows how many children all over the world. so now they are trying to take the spot light off of them and persicuting the women of the church. the nuns need to stand strong and not allow this , the men are unrealistic and out of touch with the people of thier church. the pope would love nothing better then bring the church back into the dark ages . it is almost like satan is running the church along with his minnions the demons they teach people about . whos to say the antichrist is not working in the church .
the bottom line is the vatican is falling apart and they are grasping at straws to save themselves but it is not going to work . they have betrayed to many , no one trust them anyone and they have lost the respect of the people .
JudyT.......yes women voluntarily entered thier role in the church not like the old days when women were forced into the convent for what ever reasons . but the men have voluntarily enter into thier role for some it is for devious reasons . but what you dont understand JudyT is they are doing the work of the church and the men are not. I am disappointed when women like you run off at the mouth without educating themselves and just makeing themelves look stupid.
Why is church so friggin "0" th century on this topic? What's their problem with women?
News flash: Armed nuns roaming streets of NY looking for some pay back !
Where's whoopie goldberg ? sister act III "nun's storm vactican"
The clash of the dinosaurs! Who will prove that they are less in touch with the modern world? The issue as I see it is economic. Who will get the money from Spain, who will get the money from Italy, who will get the money from Ireland, and who will get the money from the US Catholics? Fewer, if both the world economy continues to fail, and less yet if there are large defections from Catholic Church teachings. like it's OK to harbor pedophiles, etc.
Just who is the Catholic Church appealing to in this day and age, when you can search for spiritual answers on the WEB, and don't have to subject yourself to the inquisitive gossip of old ladies in the front row pews? There's no reason to be an Athiest, nor Agnostic, one can still thrive being an Apathist, not caring about anything the churches want you to care about. The Church doesn't want answers. The Church want's Controversy. If there's lots of controversy, hopefully that attention will detract from other investigations of corrupt practices. The Church really is having a hard time justifying it's purpose for being in this day and age of science, where once you have the basics down on where to find information, you don't need spiritual guidance, nor spiritual teachers. If you need controversy as a personal distraction, there's politics.
The toughest 7 women I ever met in my life were my Mom would survived a terrible childhood that included polio and being run over by a car and the 6 nuns that I had as teachers in elementary school. The pope and bishops don't know what they are messing with!
Many of us "recovering" Catholics are rooting for an actual Schism because the nuns represent what we want of our Church -- recognition of women for any and ALL roles within the church; care and acceptance for all human beings as human beings loved by God be they gay or straight; general compassion. The dogma and the doctrine used by the current patriarchy to cover up crime and aid and abet discrimination worldwide in the name of the "faith" is truly disheartening.
I would follow these ladies in a heartbeat -- I would love to go to mass that is said by a nun. It would be my first time back in many years, and they'd get my $ too because I would once again believe in the mission.
I don't think men who rape small boys should be telling anybody what is right and wrong.
Well Woman Voter,
I appreciate your view of "recovering Catholics" I have to agree a schism or at the very least the threat of it, might get these old mens attention. I long ago left the formal man made church as a Catholic it is very difficult to have been an "Altar Boy" and had 8 years of elementary Parochial schools and one of Catholic Prep schooling.
But it hurts when I know of priests who did awful things to, and with boys who trusted and thoroughly believed in the religion we were being taught. Then their "superiors" hid their crimes and protected these perverts, by moving them on to another unsuspecting parish.
The sooner a schism comes the better!
Now they criticize and rebuke the best ally they could ever expect to have. Why because they know these women see the world as it is. They teach their followers how to make and create an atmosphere that their children may survive, and not be sexually, and reproductively enslaved by uncaring husbands or other men to continuously reproduce beyond any of their capacity to support mentally and physically the children they already have. That is what they use to define contraception, and the neeed for it.
I have very few actual thoughts about the Gay community, except I think that government has too much to say about things that are really not theiir concern. Any couple has to deal with their own difficulties and this should be of no governmental or religious concern. Having made a marriage contract with a woman some 42 years ago, and a vow of allegiance to her, I find this is all I need to be concerned about. A contract of marriage or allegiance to another human being is strictly between the two of them, and no one else need be concerned whether they can propagate or not. The fact they can or cannot propagate if they are of the same sex, or not, is no guarantee if the two are of opposite sex or not. That is something entirely different. Are we all to follow the lead of Henry the Eighth? I think not.
These old men of the Vatican Boys Club do not have a clue.
These women voluntarily entered into their role. They took vows and understood completely what the Catholic Church's values and ideals were. If they can't live within those concepts, they should leave. If their only goal is to serve the human condition, they don't have to be a nun to do this.
You are right! Instead they should make it clear why exactly they left the Catholic church and began to work on their own. Maybe they can sway other women away from joining the Catholic church or persuade women to leave that church so they can preserve their rights as women.
When Sister Mock gave her vows, Liberation Theology and Vatican II were the Vatican approved "causes of the day". Emphasis was placed on lifting men, women and children out of the morass of exploitation, poverty, starvation and little or no education. The last two popes (JP II and B XVI) have repudiated that position and taken a hard right stance whilst these nuns still adhere to those causes. The current positions of the misogynistic, hierarchical, paedophile enabling church is NOT what Sister Mock signed up for!
MDH1949 - JPII did not run around castigating nuns. Whereas, Darth Benedict has been cracking down on so many things it was only a matter of time. This is what you get when the Grand Inquisitor is elected Pope.
All this "go after the nuns" nonsense is a Vatican ploy to take the heat off the priests and religious higher ups (Bishops and Cardinals) wrong doings. I would rather Christianity model itself on the actions of nuns that of pedophiles and a member of the Hitler youth.
JUDYT
These nuns are adhering to their vows and looking after individuals at the fringes of society, which the Vatican has chastised them for doing. Telling them they do too much with the poor and not enough to refute gay marriage.I would love to hear your defense of that trick. I had a look at the vows and there is nothing in there that says they should defend marriage over the plight of the poor. Also its actually not your place or the Pope's place to decide this or to judge them worthy of being of service to God.
Just so you know, my money is no longer going to the "Catholic Church" but now to a group of nuns who better represents the people and represents true Catholics.
I disagree, JudyT. No employer, even a religious one, has the right to demand blind obedience from its employees. The nuns are answerable to god (whom I personally don't think exists, but the nuns do) and the bible more than to Vatican conservatives who are clearly threatened by their autonomy.
I am a member of an ecumenical Benedictine monastic order. Our vows are made to God and not an earthly being. We have no human "superior." We do not believe any one faith communion is the sole/valid/true embodiment of the Church. We feel John 3:16 and the Great Commandment to love God and your neighbor are the defining components of what it means to be a follower of the Prince of Peace.
After Vatican II, nuns were told that they had to get out from behind their convent walls and get involved. These women now have advanced degrees in the sciences and humanities. It seems the Vatican is now offended that they have had the temerity to think for themselves.
In the 1960's the Immaculate Heart sisterhood abandoned both their habit and canonical status when they were ordered by the Vatican to obey the Bishop of L.A. and return to some form of religious habit. These nuns operated the largest system of Catholic schools in the state. Bad move on the part of the Vatican.
I will not be surprised to see members of the LCWR abandon their canonical status in order to continue to follow their collective consciences when it comes to their commitment to the teachings of Christ. It may very well mean that religious sisters will become ecumenical communities, welcoming women of different communions into their fold.
Krestov...I applaud your actions in support of the nuns you mention.
Peace.....Br. Jordan OSB
You must be a fool!
Br. Jordan - you hit the nail on the head.
This is all about the internal struggle inside The Vatican to do with implementing Vatican II, and the last remaining dinosaurs inside The Vatican are fighting a rear guard action against it. The lack of intelligence and gravitas thay patently display by taking on and insulting publicly, what is arguably the most respected icon in any country or society - A Nun, let alone 56,000 of them in the LCWR!! - displays such a lack of real world empathy and knowledge as to illustrate all by itself why Vatican II was negotiated through Catholicism.
This will herald a serious split in The Catholic Church, maybe not today, but its started a tidal wave that will only grow as it reaches the shore line and inevitable touch down.
This is not entirely true. While the church's values and ideals have not changed, the focus and what is expected from nuns has.
When many of these nuns were ordained, social justice was the focus. "If you want peace, work for justice" is what made women dcide that the chuch was something in which they wished to be a part. Birth control, abortion, masturbation, homosexuality were never supported by the church, but nuns were not expected to focus their energy on condemning them. Even those that may agree with the church's position on these issues may not have seen the focus on them as their calling.
There was also more freedom to question. There was a debate before Humane Vitae came out as to if the church should allow contraception. Those who believed that it should be allowed were able to speak their piece. They were not allowed to teach differenetly-but disagreement in itself was not seen as a negative thing. Now, the pope is concerned that disagreement will "confuse" people (because we are not able to process more than one idea) and requires that all fall in line. This is a change-which makes your claim that they knew what they were getting into false.
Hasn't the Catholic Church even quietly brought back indulgence, the catalyst for the Reformation???
What century are the leaders in anyway?
JudyT...I suppose that you will be the one to get up out of your chair and get busy doing the work of these nuns then huh? Hardly likely imo.
Your name suggests that you may be female.... It is obvously hard to believe that you have not heard of the sisterhood and about women sticking together to bring about needed positive change... but then again there have always been those Stepford Wives type women who believe they are incapable of thinking or doing anything for themselves without male imput, and thus must be cared for by-( as they gaze in childlike wonder at )- that male person....awaiting guidance on what to think, how to act/behave, live, love, procreate, work, etc in order to supposedly feel fulfilled.... even if the guidance etc is ignorant regressive, stagnating backwards nonsense i.e. that makes no sense especially in or for the 21st century. LOL
Well one thing for sure is that the majority of folks will stand with the nuns -even those folks who are not even catholic. Many folks may not have been catholic but many of us did attend catholic school or may have had some interaction with a nun or with nuns at some point in our lives, and thus do know that when the nuns mean business, they mean business.... LOL
When will these priests (men) learn that you can never win a verbal etc fight with a woman yet? LOL So far none of the nuns anywhere have been accused of any sexual abuse of children or making political statements, or speaking out against the POTUS including the negative name calling , or trying to pick a fight with the WH, or trying to make their church doctrine take precident over the constitution and laws of the land and the various other muscle flexing anti-woman, anti- reproductive choice etc moves, from the look of things.
So who do you think are more known and respected the world over, for all their dedication, teaching, caring for the sick and dying, feeding and caring for the poor and homeless and having impact in all areas of people's lives etc ? Certainly not the upper echelons or otherwise of the church...
Anyhoo, Nuns Rules ...in many more way that one... LOL
Peace... gotta go.. having a flashback of Mother Superior making her rounds of classrooms looking for those kids who have misbehaved in class.......
Go ladies... Don't back down.
The nuns are free to go their own way as far as I am concerned. There can be no fence sitting in the Catholic church today Barack Obama has seen to that. If they aren't able to stand for the teachings of the church they won't be able to stand up to our government when the time comes. They have already sold their souls to the government. I wish them well in their future endeavors. But I also wish them out of my way.
lonereb: Again, find your brain.
lonereb
Some simple research would tell you they are ding the teaching of the church just not the church politics of old men.
No there cant be - that includes formal Catholic Doctrine - Vatican II - which has been endorsed by The Pope, and was what the Nuns were following.
Stuffy opposition to the Nuns is merely the last gasp vestige of opposition to Vatican II - the latter was endorsed by the current Pope and was even drafted by him as a Principle Staffer in the 60s when the Second Vatican Council was convened.
Dont like it - tough, get off the fence and leave the Church. Those who oppose formal Catholic Doctrine can face excommunication. If you believe you shouldnt despite your opposition to Vatican II, sure as hell the Nuns shouldnt because all they did was follow formal doctrine - you are opposing it roflmao.
I guess the priests did not vow to NOT molest young boys.... are they off the hook?? The male Catholic leadership seems to think so....
JUDYT...
leaving the church is certainly not the only option for these nuns
imagine hard working, generous women bringing common sense to this organization
it's a true miracle in the making
If these nuns are anything like the nuns I had in school, the Bishops are toast! Go sisters!
Really priests...REALLY? How better to draw attention away from your sins than to go after the group to LEAST likely sexually abuse children. Tell me, are you still doing that and trying to hide it from the public? I'm thinking yes. This is why I'm an agnostic...your church is a joke!
Sounds like these nuns are emulating the son of their god by tending to the human condition. Go get 'em sisters! Had some tough ones in school myself but left that all behind as an adult non-believer in fairy tale gods.
The power-hungry old men who run the Catholic Church would do well to listen to these Nuns who spend their time following and emulating Jesus.
I was born and raised Catholic, twelve years of nun education. These women do the dirty work that a priest would never do. In a faith that was written by men, administered by men for the benefit of men what would you expect them to say about strong women. I hope the Sisters are successful in their fight with the Holy See but past experience shows the church will just cut them off and continue in their ancient ways, and the Bishops wonder why their member numbers are falling.
Cut them off, we people of the Episcopal Church will welcome them with open arms.
I agree WeAllHaveOpinions,
And since the schisms in the RCC with both the Greek Orthodox (1100 AD) and the Episcopalian churches (1500s - the English Reformation), those churches have continued to be recognized as true churches of Jesus Christ by the RCC since thw schisms were up at the top of the religious heirarchy.
Unlike the Protestant Revolution, where the different resulting denominations founded by "laypersons" were considered blasphemy practiced by heretics as far as the RCC was concerned, the RCC recognized the Greek Orthodox and Episcopalian Churches since their own ordained bishops, cardinals and priests were involved with the "splits" from Rome's recognition of the Pope and his authority.
If the RCC's nuns here on US soil were to leave the RCC and go to either the Greek Orthodox or Episcopalian Churches, as they have been taught, they are still following the religion and teachings of Jesus Christ.
Given that the current Pope has blood on his hands from compliciate associations with the devil and his minions (nazis and Hitler) and continue to spit into the face of God with their criminal and heinous interactions with priests who freely child molest/abuse, rape nuns and women of the church, launder Russian (and who knows which others) mafia monies which supports the killing, maiming and God knows what else of the victims from whom they procured their illegal monies, perhaps the reason for the original schism with the Greek Orthodox was well founded in Christ's teachings.
Perhaps they were right back in the 1100s that the RCC did abuse its authority to satisfy greed and power within its ranks instead of folling Jesus Christ's teachings and build his church. You do NOT hear the same garbage about the Greek Orthodox church - milenia of sexual abuse of children and women by the religious hidden and covered up by the Pope and his bishops, the Inquitions, the Crusades (which began about the same time as the Greek schism), the money changers within the Vatican, the "vow of poverty"practiced by only the women, even though the men take the same vow while the upper elechlon of the church insisting on living as royal kings in guarded palaces as the priests "live in poverty" with huge rectories with persiana rug, mahogany furniture and banisters, cooks cooking the best of foods and housekeepers cleaning after them like they were aristocrats. The nuns, however, are in jail size rooms with nothing and their lives are truly lived in povery.
It will be interesting if the nuns here on US soil do depart from the RCC and follow Jesus in a recognized, true church of Jesus Christ outside of the RCC. All it takes is an example (the US nuns) for nuns elsewhere (the world) to follow. The Church of Jesus Christ began without nuns - they left women out of everything. It wasnt until hundreds of years later before the first order of nuns was formed and accepted by the RCC (which included the Greek Orthodox at the time) and their attire consisted of the "dress of the day" for women, just they never changed and they were then referred to as habits. Perhaps the RCC should end as it began, without nuns. But then, who would teach, nurse, attend to the poor and disadvantaged??? The priests??? Hell no, they are "above" menial work ... that is for women and Jesus.
PS: I was born into and raised within the RCC (Italian Catholic, including parochial schools for 12 yrs) .... and survived. There is a reason many of us consider ourselves catholicism survivors.
please excuse any typos above ... i can spell just fine, I just cant type for sh_t. Never took any secretarial courses in my pursuit of my B.S. in Pure and Applied Mathematics.
it's spelled s h i t but you knew that.
Weallhaveopinions You are welcome to them. It is a time to decide where you stand in the church and as far as I'm concerned they are standing on the wrong side of a line. They can visit me in jail and explain their stance.
lonerob...
visit you in jail?
it seems you have been encarcerated in more than one jail
Team American Nuns!!!!
Catholic Nuns...F%$k Yeah!
So lick my bu.................errr nevermind
"Clash of Titans"? An order of nuns vs. the pope is a internal organizational disciplinary process of an autocratic authority with of one of many subordinates. This is more a "Squash of Gnat" - albeit an exceptionally irritating one.
Your nazi pope is about to get his behind singed and shamed by the Lord Jesus Christ fool, I strongly suggest you repent and humble yourself before Him lest you join all your child raping pals in hell.
Utter nonsense. The Pope is not going to get struck by lightning and the acts of a section of the Nuns is not going to upset the Vatican. They could give a crap. Seriously?? Do you honestly believe that God busy's himself with this nonsense? Did you forget Free Will? That means no meddling - so get a grip - no miracles, no lightning, no flaming chariots. For heaven's sake - this is a dispute between a secular part of the church, the Pope is the boss and he frankly doesn't care much for US Catholics or clergy. I was born and raised Catholic and I would NEVER go back to that religion or any other. I believe in God, but not in this fictional dogma that men have written to serve their own needs. The nuns are doing the same thing - writing more dogma and disavowing promises they made to the church for a perceived greather good. Okay - go for it. Don't make this an apocaplyse though. It is another pimple on the butt of the Catholic Church, which is by the way, the size of a T-Rex. Pimples are an inconvienence. Remember also - if you buck the Pope - your chances of getting in to heaven are nil. Just wanted to remind you of the dogma that may apply here.....lol.....
Really people - are nuns even necessary anymore? Is celibacy necessary? NO!!! And it's all chuch dogma, not the word of Christ - if you hold that more sacred. Unbelievable ignorance here.
I disagree that they are an irritating gnat...however...yes, this is an internal disciplinary action. That being said, why do these nuns stay in the church? They are free to leave at any time...If ya don't like your bosses, find another job. Duh.
gino...I think that you're the only irritating gnat around here.
A few nuns in the U.S. are not going to change many hundreds of years of church doctrine. They have every right to express their opinions to church leaders, but if they don't like what the church hierarchy sets as policy, the nuns can either accept it or leave.
How's that "dumb following the blind" thing working out for ya?
I suggest they follow Jesus and leave
Right, just like the Suffragette movement didn't impact voting rights, and the civil rights protests didn't change a thing. And this isn't just a "few nuns", had you actually read the article, you would have seen that this group represents thousands.
Oh nonsense upon nonsense. Follow Jesus my ass. They want rights that they gave up and want to have more power in the church then they do, and frankly that is not religion or caring for anybody, that's simply political power and the need to control their own destiny, vice having it run by a pope thousands of miles away. The dogma of the church is archaic and many of us "used to be" Catholics see it for what it really is - mere writings of men who wanted more control and got it by instilling fear with retribution in this life and the after life. Bull@!$%#. What kind of God says - hey! Spend your life being a good person and doing the right thing, but oh by the way, if you screw up, I'm sending you to eternal hell, or if you do good and are not baptized, we send you someplace else. C'mon - these laws were written in the times where people needed them - to survive. That time is gone - it's spiritual and individual and not a functional need. God (or whatever you believe in) is within you, not the walls of the church or the words of men that run/ran it. Let the nuns do what they want - break away, be subdued, - who frankly cares???? Who funds them today is the Church - so if they want those bucks, they shut up, otherwise - go out and raise funds and be independent. Frankly don't see this as a revelation of any kind.
Jeff it will probably end me up as a guest of the federal government. But it is not blind faith. It is a very considered decision. I will not comply with PPACA, I will not pay the fine and the ball will be in the governments court. There can be no middle ground in the Catholic church in America anymore.
Actually Peter maybe they can be the catalyst for change and enlightenment. It's sad when people like you, so structured and and rigid can't see that they can learn from other people. Learning is what life is supposed to be all about it isn't it? This can be a time for the church to learn and grow....as long as they don't listen to clueless, mindless and stupidly rigid people like you.
gino 3741009,
sounds like you drank the cool aid...how much does the pope get from you everyweek...just let me remind you...what goes in the basket...doesn't save your soul.
Give them hell, Sister's! Power to the people (clap, clap) Power to the people, right on. May I suggest a Browning Hi- Power, you cap a few peds maybe they won't try to distract the rest of us with this b.s.
Something tells me that this is not a battle the church is likely to win. Telling American women to shut up isn't likely to endear themselves to the nuns. It appears that the official position of the church is "ignorance is bliss!" Thus, it hardly appeals to those in a free society. About all the church can do is to try to temper the divide by allowing the discussions with the "official" position of the nuns to be consistent with the church doctrine. Let's face it, a lot can be said about contraceptives and still take the "as I am a nun, I must take the official church position that contraceptives are not allowed."
Just imagine the havoc that a firing of the nuns or a strike by the nuns would cause. A front row seat would definitely worth the price of the ticket.
You have the normal failing of the liberal establishment. You think all groups are cookie cutter stamped. I am an American. I am a woman. I am a Catholic and I am willing to go to jail to stand on the opposite side of the issue.
lonereb
And you have the normal failing of someone who prefers to be led than to lead. You would not be an American were it not for the soldiers willing to fight the monarchy that was the British. You would not be able, as a woman, to vote, own property, pursue education, were it not for the suffragettes willing to fight the patriarchy system that earlier existed. And, finally, you would not be a free-to-practice Catholic, were it not for those British Catholics willing to flee their homeland to an as yet unnamed places in America. The dogma of the Catholic church that folks question now have ALL been invented within the last three hundred years by a leadership desperate to repel challenges to its influence and control. Priests marry? They did, until inheritance issues caused the church to lose wealth. Infallibility? Well, that was declared in the 1800s in response to folks learning to read, and questioning the bible and the church. Nothing better than to declare infallibility, my word is the "only" word as it were to quell the rumblings of a suddenly questioning faithful. The Catholic Church desperately proselytizes in third world countries knowing they are the only source of people who would be willing to have baby after baby after baby...the more parishioners they can get and keep in the pew increasing their strength by numbers. The Catholic Church is a monstrously wealthy business with closed books and whose leadership is answerable to no one. My Catholic faith, on the other hand, has been completely severed from the church ever since I finally found out why the priests in the parishes around my Greenwich Village neighborhood in family-oriented 1960s New York were being moved around. Never would we know then that we learned later. When the boys that were molested and raped finally spoke up in the 1990s and the church.was.silent. Then and they are silent now. So, go to jail on behalf of these men and then see how much they support you. You will be totally alone American.woman.catholic. Perhaps then you will then see what many Catholics have come to realize about what the Catholic Church truly is and what it has become.
Ben, once you've totally cleaned house of child molesters and put in place procedures to make sure it doesn't happen again, then you can go after run away nuns.
The Catholic Church is a misogynistic anachronism and has little of value for or in common with modern society. They can either carefully introduce and accommodate two thousand years of human advancement or they can become dinosaurs and eventually disappear. They make little pronouncements (saying mass in the native language, condemning, finally, sexual abuse by priests) and think that will take care of their problems. They forget that most Catholics in the modern world are actually educated, can read, and have access to sources of information other than the local parish priest.
This is not about whether the nuns are working to help and support those in need. It is about maintaining male dominance and prerogative. The bishops have no trouble walking into the political arena, despite legal prohibitions from doing so to maintain their tax exempt status. They just don't want the women to do anything other than what they are told to do by the bishops. Clearly the bishops don't really care what Jesus told them all to do.
'god' is an idiotic idea promoted by immoral people to control and pacify the weak minded ... and 'jesus' is a figment of their over-active imagination.
Funny how MSNBC and the liberal media are so fascinated by the Roman Catholic Church, an organization they despise, resent and fear, all at the same time. And right on cue every time they run a "news item" the anti-Catholic crowd crawls out from under their rocks to shriek and howl in unison. And it's all for naught as the Roman Catholic Church will still be around long after they are all dust and forgotten.
Blame tne news for REPORTING the child abuse. It's the press' fault. Blame the press for reporting money laundering scam. It's the press' fault. Blame the socialist / communist / atheist school system for teaching history, and the Middle (Dark) Ages, and the crusades, and the inquisition. Too bad we don't live in a Christian version of Saudi Arabia or Iran, where the religious leaders controll everything. No dissent. No free press. Secret police. Secret prisons. Woudl be nice. All the bad stuff would go away and the church would give us heaven on earth, almost like they did centuries ago when they turned Europe into a hell hole.
Maybe these catholic Priests, Bishops and the Pope would be better served to weed out the pediphiles that abused little boys for years, then were shuffled off to other parishes to abuse other little boys.
They need to worry less about womens contraception and worry more about child rape. They need to worry less about nuns doing the work of Jesus and worry more about pedophilia in the Catholic church.
This is just smoke and mirrors from the Vatican to deflect the evil that has been going on under cover of the Catholic church for decades..
From this Christian, thank you American nuns and all nuns for doing the work of Jesus.
To the Vatican- clean up the mess you have created and hidden for decades before you go after the nuns. The nuns are following the charitable teachings of Jesus, it appears the Vatican is not.
As a non-Catholic who has spent an entire professional career working for Catholic institutions, (Seattle University Jesuits & The Sister's of Providence) I stand with the Sisters. These women daily go into the real world with the True Gospel of Christ.... "Love One Another" Something I dont see from the Vatican very often.
I am reminded of the words from a hymn I used to hear the Sister's sing : "We are called to act with Justice. We are called to Love tenderly. We are called to Serve one another. To walk HUMBLY with God." Perhaps Archbishop Sartain & the rest of the Vatican heirarchy could reflect on those words.
How is it in any way "humble" to vie for power with the recognised and acknowledged hierarchy of the Church. Christ came to serve - the washing of the feet was the example. The Sisters are fighting for power, plain and simple. They took a solemn vow of obedience and they don't seem to understand the meaning. In the Old Testament meaning, obedience means "to hear," "to listen." , the ethical significance of hearing with reverence and obedient assent. No one is saying they can't live out their charism in service, just that they have gone astray in what exactly that means. You can't run the show and be the servant at the same time. They signed up to be servants. If you don't like the mantle of the servant, ask to be relieved of your vow and "serve" in a different capacity. Until then, you serve under the auspices of the Magisterium in Rome. Do they need to know the definition of "serve" as well?
Ask to be relieved of the Vows? Piss on that, they can serve the community as they were doing outside the Catholic Church. The smart thing these ladies could do is walk out. They can serve Christ, I am episcopalian and would love to see these ladies at my church.
The nuns are not vieing for power. They were doing what they thought they should do to be faithful to their beliefs and the teachings of Jesus. They are responding to the Vatican's effort to impose power on them. The fact that they are no just rolling over on this is not a power play - it is effort to continue to practice their faith as they see it. Nuns are no longer uneducated cooks and maids for priests and my guess is the bishops don't like to deal with them as human equals.
They joined to serve GOD, not the misogynists and pedophiles of the RCC. The ones who have gone astray are the ones in the hierarchy of the church, not the nuns.
I also had a Catholic school education with nuns doing most of the teaching. They are the most selfless people in the church. They are dealing with an anachronistic, mysogynic group of men who only want to continue the status quo. I hope the sisters prevail and I applaud them in dealing with this garbage head on. If the Catholic Church wants to survive, the powers that be need to realize that their petty power plays, edicts, and institutionalized subjugation of women needs to stop.
As a Catholic, born and raised, I know the church, and in particular, the local churches do a lot of good. When you need your car fixed, you go to a mechanic. When you need food, you go to the grocery. When you need moral or spiritual help or guidance, you go to your priest. They will always serve a purpose. But the Roman Catholic Church our of Rome, and its conservative supporters, have lost all legitimacy. Nevermind their checkered history, Never mind the current scandals. They don't even support birth control! Where do they get that nonsense. They are as irrelevant as the Islamis Imams who tell their young boys dying for the infidah will get you 13 virgins. It's all the same. Nonsense. They chased me away a long time ago and the way they are going, I doubt if they can ever win me back.
"Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith" or by it's original name " The Holy Office of the Inquisition" -- Google it. Our boy the current pope was the last boss in the Inquisition Office.
He has a pretty good file on every bishop and cardinal in the church. He's the person responsible for delaying church defrocking and punishment of all the priests who molested boys for the last 25 years. Just the kinda guy that should be the leading voice in an earthly religion.
I put in my 24/7/365 x 12 years, a long time ago and almost became a priest. Not -- was the best decision I ever made in my life. I then spent the last 43 years learning in detail about the religion I almost became a part of.
Anyone who is part of an organized religion IMHO is certifiable. That a church STANDS AGAINST contraception, birth control and condom use and declares it a SIN, is patently INSANE!!!
Jesus, if you believe the myth, NEVER SAID A WORD ABOUT CONTRACEPTION.
You go NUNS!!! Stand up to those celibate old white men who DO NOT LIKE WOMEN (or children, for that matter). The nuns are the ones who take care of the poor, the needy, the emotionally devastated.
I have enormous respect for these ladies. Keep it up, Sisters!!!
i am a "Recovering Catholic"
I hope the nuns realize that they need to split from the RCC as it is the only way they will be able to continue to practice and live out their faith. They don`t need no mortal man to tell them how to do that. They need to take their time and efforts away from the RCC althogether. Without the women....the nuns...the RCC is toast.
Let them begin their own schools. Let the RCC scramble now during the summer months to replace them. It will be mighty shocking to find out that nearly free labor is still less expensive than even cheap labor. Let them set up their own clinics no longer under the auspices of the RCC. Leave the Catholic Hospitals and work in those clinics. Start their own soup kitchens and pantries. I`m betting that many, many, many Catholic and non-catholic women will support them right from the start.
Having shown my support I do want to go on record as saything I hold them as responsible as the priests for having aided and abetted the child molestation and rape. Many of them had to have known what was going on and it was their responsibility to have reported it to Law Enforcement.
However, this attack on their very existance gives them the opportunity to right the wrongs.
Little Old Men in dresses telling the rest of the world how to live their lives. Too funny
At some point in time a Sister will rise and post 95 certitudes on Twitter or Facebook or perhaps nail a copy to the door of the Vatican and declare themselves to be leading a complementary, but separate church. Martin Luther and others have done well by their faith in doing just that. By interpreting the bible as the word of god as revealed to them they are not denying it but adopting it and showing it doesn't belong to Vatican Catholics alone. Were they to choose to create a more modern approach to the word of god a fine place to begin with the advisement to do the right thing and unto others as you would have them do unto you. Go Sister go.
Those mummies in the vatican are just frustrated they can't burn heritics at the stake like their good ol' days!
The reason that people in the U.S. are leaving the Catholic church in record numbers is one of the reason's that these wonderful women are standing up and saying that the issues concerning American Catholics need to be addressed. The words from the Vatican come from men that really do not recognize the differences in our cultures and are stuck in an era that no longer exists. My grandparents are from Italy, I was born and raised Catholic, married in the Catholic church and have found discontent because of various issues that were swept under the rug and never addressed with no apologies to families and victims and still they want to hold to the old ways. It is time of a change.
