Quakes, landslide kill at least 80 in Afghanistan

KABUL - At least 80 were confirmed dead in a landslide triggered by two earthquakes in mountainous northern Afghanistan on Tuesday, officials confirmed to NBC News.

A search was continuing for more bodies in the rubble, but was hampered by lack of equipment, officials said.

The governor of Baghlan province told Reuters 22 homes were buried but the bodies of only two women had been recovered. Twenty people were in hospital with injuries.

"We don't think we will be able to take out the other bodies," Governor Abdul Majid said.

The United Nations told Reuters it was working with authorities in the area to determine what aid was needed.

Afghanistan's north is prone to earthquakes. A 2002 quake in the same province killed more than 2,000 people.

Reuters contributed to this report.

I'm still waiting to hear what the sick and twisted Iranian imams try to say to blame this on the US. Maybe Allah has finally had enough bull@!$%# from the tribes people in that area and is getting caught up on his retribution calendar. It certainly can't be scantily clad women this time, which is what the imams tried to blame the earthquake in Haiti on. Maybe the tribes people could learn something about engineering, too. Not one stick of rebar is visible in any of the photos of buildings flattened by the quake. Mud bricks just don't seem to cut it, do they?

You know good and well they will blame us !!!!!

The thing is , how much money will they demand from us for this natural disaster ???? Of coarse they will say it was caused by our bombing of their country.

Ironically enough, it won't be the imams who are the first to jump on the "blame America" bandwagon... it'll be our very own home-grown conspiracy idiots.

HAARP gets blamed for everything.

@mathuin You mean you haven't heard? Mother nature lost a bet with the U.S. and therefore had to create those earthquakes. Our idea. Our plan. It's all our fault. Duh..

Fore your sake and the sake of your family I hope and pray all is well for your daughter and her husband. Please thank them for their service for me and when they get back home tell them welcome home for me.

As for the release of info on the number of WIA's-KIA's the government does not release them any more. Lesson learned during the 6 O'clock war ( VIETNAM ). They do not want to start up the war protesting thing again. A strategy that will come to bite them in the ass again.

I will keep your daughter & her husband in my thoughts and prayers . Keep your chin up, all will be OK.

Thank you for your kind words. Our local newspaper does say how many troops were killed/injured for the week but dose not say anything else. Two killed last week was on my daughters base. I guess if they don't print it it isn't news. I hope all troops have made it safely through this earthquake

You can get a different perspective and often more facts:

sometimes not what you want to hear but the honesty will separate you from the malcontents.

Well there's 50 or so we won't have to worry about any more. The US needs to bring everyone back yesterday. Yes I know some of them were children - those are the ones that I feel for - not one of the tribal adults!

The quakes are beneficial. They stir up the soil in preparation for more poppy production. Mix in 80 or so human corpses for fertilizer and, voila!, the narcotics keep coming. What a country!

Let Allah help them, oh that's right he's only God maybe there's a message in all the natural disasters to the evil which they back so wholeheartedly. I wish disaster on no one but if their God is so weak to use mortals to kill nonbelievers I wish them well in their disregard for respect for your fellow mankind. If we leave now would we feel any better having our children freed from a religous war brought on by heathens. Any religion that advocates killing nonbelievers is weak as the God they so wish for he gave all men free minds faith is what will get you through to God not what you do supposedly in his name such as raping and killing children in Syria. All these savages will one day be judged by God best hope they were on the side of God and protecting all from evil and not part of the evil they so like to proclaim on any that are not of their faith.

Love how quick people bring "God's Retribution" in -

Was that the same with the Joplin and Alabama tornados then? In context you are saying the same thing. It's a Natural Disaster - that's all...
