UN suspends Syria monitoring due to rising violence

The suspension of activity inside Syria by U.N. observers may signal the chance for a peaceful resolution to the country's conflicts is slipping away.

Updated at 12:55 p.m. ET: United Nations monitors in Syria have suspended operations because of the increasing violence over the last 10 days by President Bashar al-Assad's forces and rebels seeking his overthrow, the head of the observer mission said on Saturday.

"The observers will not be conducting patrols and will stay in their locations until further notice," General Robert Mood said in a statement.

Mood said the intensification in violence was impeding the 300 unarmed U.N. monitors from carrying out their mandate to observe an April 12 ceasefire deal, which has failed to halt the violence.

US official: Russia sending troops to Syria

"This suspension will be reviewed on a daily basis. Operations will resume when we see the situation fit for us to carry out our mandated activities," Mood said.

The White House called again on the Syrian regime to uphold its commitments under the Annan Plan, including the full implementation of a ceasefire, NBC News reported.

"At this critical juncture, we are consulting with our international partners regarding next steps toward a Syrian-led political transition ... The sooner this transition takes place, the greater the chance of averting a lengthy and bloody sectarian civil war," the White House said in a prepared statement obtained by NBC News.

Many hundreds of people, including civilians, rebels and government forces, have been killed in the two months since international mediator Kofi Annan's ceasefire deal was supposed to come into effect.

Last week shots were fired at a car carrying U.N. observers after they were turned away from the town of Haffeh by angry Assad supporters who threw stones and metal rods at their convoy, a spokeswoman for the monitors said.

Washington and its Western allies have shown no appetite for a Libya-style military intervention even as Moscow has helped shield Assad from tougher U.N. measures.

Diplomats said Mood is expected to brief the U.N. Security Council on Monday or Tuesday about the unrest in Syria.

President Barack Obama will hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday on the sidelines of a G20 summit in Mexico, but expectations are low for any significant progress for breaking the deadlock on Syria.

The violence in Syria like many Arab nations is the result of sectarianism. Assad is an Allowhite (sp?) while those he is exterminating are Sunnis and Shiites and others.

What is it with the Arabic countries who cannot learn tolerance for other religious sects? This is what every single major massacre in the Middle East is always about. Most Americans are fed up with having our tax dollars used to fight battles built upon 5,000 year old sectarianisms.

These idiots simply refuse to live in peace because they are power freaks. And just who might you imagine is behind all the sectarian violence? There's an old man sitting in a mosque somewhere, wizened face and ancient ideas he's too old to admit much less forfeit so the younger generations can for the first time in their lives know freedom from religious sectarianism that is killing more of them and not a single one of these old men of religion.

And, it's not just Muslims...Look at every single major religion and there's some old man standing over his flock like Lord Almighty. These old religious men hate anything that overturns their power over their "flocks". When you look at these old geezers for what they really are: Massive insecurity that can only be satisfied by the blood of the young, the most impressionable and those who fear death...death Mr. Old Religious Man will most certainly be happy to accommodate with the pointing of his index finger.

These reptiles have been killing each other for centuries and will continue to do so, whether we waste blood and treasure trying to bring them into the 21st Century or not.

But...why do we even give a rats behind what the UN says or does, why does this useless organization even exist? They're like a bunch of old men, sitting around bitch'n about the weather and not being able to do a thing about it.

The word 'suspended' is incorrect- latest from peacekeeper countries' defense depts' UN/defense representatives. The peacekeepers are waiting for the situation on the ground to calm down so they can do their 'unarmed' observation in Syria. The peacekeeping ops have not ended-not aborted. Finland's UN emb/defense representative Esa Vanonen- Finland has peacekeepers on the ground. http://yle.fi/uutiset/puolustusvoimat_syyria_operaation_vain_tauku/6184608.

President Barack Obama will hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday on the sidelines of a G20 summit in Mexico, but expectations are low for any significant progress for breaking the deadlock on Syria.

Whisper, whisper...."Wait until after the Presidential election then we can sit down and talk."

It is going to be very interesting to find out what the G-20 (another "fiscal" tentacle of the United Nations) summit leaders agree to in the way of redistribution of World's wealth. Prime example, continue to solicit (or is that DEMAND) more IMF funding from member Nations:

Wait a minute....Russia just sent new helicopter gunships to a Syrian port.

Hello folks, why in the world does anyone think that the U.S. has the moral high ground to overthrow governments, as a fellow blogger so eloquently stated, “America land of the free dictator to the rest of the world”.

Who do you think has been funding and arming the Arab Spring? The problem with funding the Arab Spring is that those people have woken up and they aren’t going to cave in to Imperialism any longer.

The U.S. and Europe have admitted to arming, funding and providing mercenaries (advisors) to Syria. Enough is enough.

In our short history we have bombed over 65 countries.

We have been a country for almost 236 years and have been at war for 215 years!

    The Revolutionary War – 1775 – 1783

    The Whiskey Rebellion – 1789 - 1794

    The War of 1812 – 1812 – 1814

    The Mexican American War – 1846 – 1848

    The American Civil War – 1861 – 1865

    The Spanish American War – 1897 – 1898

    The Indian American Wars – 1775 – 1918

    World War I – 1914 – 1918

    World War II – 1941 – 1945

    Cold War - 1945 – 1992

    The Vietnam War - 1962 – 1973

    The Invasion of Grenada – 1983 – 1984

The Invasion of Panama – 1989

    Operation Desert Storm – 1991 – 1992 (Kuwait)

    Operation United Shield – 1992 – 1995 (Somalia)

    Operation Determined Falcon – 1998 – 1999 (Kosovo, Albania)

    Operation Enduring Freedom – 2001 – 2012 (Afghanistan)

Syrian govt has every right to kill the terrorists supported by outsiders. It is true for every governments. Not country should interfare in another country. What were we doing when Srilanka was slaughtering 150,000 Tamils in over 2 decades; we are not even able to carry out the UN security council resolution to try the Srilankan President.

Before 1991 Iraqi war, Bush, Sr and his war machine noticed Russian advisors and weapons helping Saddam in Iraq.

Now US is discovering Russian arms in Syria!

It is different issue that US is buying helicopters for Afghanistan from a Russian company!

Useless, worthless, hopeless, they should be shoved out of New York City, and put in the Middle East.

The Majority of UN Representatives are sympathizers of the same Religious Terrorism.

Remember, Ghadaffi, Iran's Ahdinemajad, and other Dictators demanded they stay in New York City Hotels--finally Ghadaffi pitched a Tent somewhere, so he could sleep. No one wants them in the US, dictating, criticizing how our Country is the Evil Empire.

No Americans should die for Syria. We should not arm the rebels, because we don't have any idea who they are. Remember when we armed the rebels in Afghanistan when Russia was fighting against them in the 80's and one of those guys we help arm was Osama Bin Laden. Look how that came back and bit us in the ass. Obama is making the right move so far. We cannot and should not keep trying to police the world. Why must we continue to be the bullies of the World? Quit giving my hard earned tax dollars to foreign governments or the rebels they are tryintg to kill as neither side will piss on us if we were on fire when the time does come. Its not just the fool (Obama) and those idiots (Holder, Clinton, etc) that he appointed (not elected) thats to blame. Its the way the US has been buying favoristism for the last 75 years or so on the backs of your childrens children. When it comes time to decide to cut food stamps and welfare or continue foreign aid, take a guess which the chosen ones will select. It won't be pretty. But take care, the Army will be rolled in to enfore the fool Obama and his law. And when I say Army, that will be the Army of the United Nations coming to a city near YOU.

Try to realise that the Russians aren't fighting in this war. Last night I read the words of an elderly woman talking about how three kidnapers killled twenty-some-odd students years ago, and one of them is being paroled. The problem with her take on the story was the fact that nobody died. According to reports, they are repairing helicopters for the President of Syria. That's not the same as fighting. As for TheAZCowboy, Tombstone, Az., he's off on his own little adventure.

Can we now expect the NATO and the Arab League countries as well as the Western media to drop the pretense that the Syrian rebels are angels of peace and that they are demonstrating peacefully for freedom, democracy and human rights in the wake of the Arab Spring ? Obama would do very well not to interfere militarily even via the NATO in this basically Islamic sectarian fight between the Alawites and the wahabized Sunnis.

Has the UN EVER brokered a peace plan anywhere? Has any one of their many 'peacekeeping' or 'monitoring' forces EVER been successful in ANY country? Why does Kofi Anan believe he is any more successful a negotiator than anyone else who has tried to secure Syria? Syria is bent on self destruction and murdering all who oppose Annan -- just like Russia and Josef Stalin. The UN is USELESS and is still trying to persuade the world that it performs some viable function, but it is only a loose affiliation of third world politicians intent on padding their pockets at the world's expense and is intent on changing world law to suit its own purposes -- padding its own pockets. Shut down the UN and reclaim the valuable real estate in NYC.

if he is still in th ecountry or they know where he is? send a hit team in, get rid of him and take out a few of his top generals, no need to go to war,, take out the leaders then let those who want to take over take over, but a hit team or a drone strike on his homes or anyplace he is hiding is the way to go, faster and easier, and alot less blood shed, and we dont have to lose american lives inthe process,

Peace in Syria is not worth the life of a single U.S. Marine. Additionally, I am worried for the livelihood of Syrian Christians. Every time a Muslim country is "freed" to follow their own devices, it seems that minorities end up paying the price. I'd rather have a tyrant that protects a Christian minority than a democracy that oppresses it.

                            AZCowboy--

Israel: A mob of around 50 Palestinian Muslims stoned a group of Christian tourists atop Jerusalem's Temple Mount, wounding three Israeli police officers in the process. The attack is believed to have been instigated by the former Muslim mufti of Jerusalem.

                            http://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/2949/muslim-persecution-of-christians-february-2012

Egypt: Two incidents of "blasphemy" convictions took place: 1) A juvenile court sentenced a Coptic Christian teenager to three years in prison for allegedly "insulting Islam," on claims that he posted unflattering cartoons of Muhammad on Facebook. When the incident came to light, Muslims rioted, fire-bombing his home and at least five other Christian-owned homes. 2) Another judge upheld a six-year prison sentence for a Christian convicted of "blasphemy": after a Muslim had told the 49-year old Christian convict that Jesus had illegal sex with at least ten women, the Christian countered "by stating that Muhammad, the founder of the Islamic religion, had more than four wives—a view commonly held by Islamic scholars." Police subsequently arrested him and, in a 10-minute mock trial with no defense attorney present, the judge sentenced him to six years in prison for "insulting the prophet."

Iran: A Christian convert from Islam has been sentenced to six years in prison. Originally arrested in December 2010 as part of a major crackdown on the country's house church movement, "the married father of two has been held in the notorious Evin prison ever since, spending several months in solitary confinement," and likely goaded to return to Islam. He is accused of "action against the regime's security, being in contact with foreign organizations and religious propaganda." In short, according to Iranian Christians, "his 'crime' was practicing his Christian faith."

Egypt: A recent "reconciliation meeting" between members of a sword-wielding Muslim mob that earlier brutalized a Christian school proved to be "nothing less than an attempt at legalized extortion." In exchange for peace, members of the mob that stormed the school last month without provocation—holding two nuns hostage for several hours—demanded in the meetings that the school sign over land that included the guesthouse they attacked. "Human rights groups and Coptic rights activists say the meetings are just a way to pressure powerless groups and people into giving away what little rights they have." Likewise, the judges appointed to investigate the Maspero massacre, which claimed the lives of 27 Christians and injured 329, closed the case, due to "lack of identification of the culprits." As one Christian lawyer put it: "We said all along that it [the investigation] was just a show and this is the outcome we got."

Syria: Almost the entire Christian population—nearly 60,000—of the city of Homs, the nation's third largest, have fled as fighting between the government and anti-government, largely Islamist forces continues. Reportedly only 1,000 Christians remain. Opposition forces are attacking churches and other Christian centers; "Muslim neighbors are turning on the Christians. Christians have also suffered kidnapping and gruesome murders. Some Christian families, unable to pay a ransom for their relatives' release and fearing that they may be tortured, have been driven to ask the kidnappers to kill their loved ones at once."

If the U.N. really wanted to end the violence then they would have demanded that the rebels lay down their weapons and stop killing people. THEY are the ones who started this. THEY are the ones who the U.N. should have taken down.

Just because a group of rebels, hard line Muslims, decieded they wanted a different government does not make them RIGHT.

The U.N. and all the nations attached to it, RECOGNIZED the government before this started, and that is who the U.N. SHOULD have been supporting. IF they had a beef with this government then they should have brought it before the U.N. council.

The U.N. and all it's allies are to blame. Just because the government in power is not the one the U.N. wanted, does not give them the right to give the rebels the go ahead to kill the people who support THAT government.

The U.N. and it's allies were 100% wrong to support the rebels.

Just think if it was our country at civil war, how much interference would OUR government tolerate from the U.N.

The more people you kill the more and greater the numbers of people will be your enemy. One person dead is not just 1 person dead. It means 1 situation for justice or vengence for family, their friends and their friends friends until it reaches a crescendo that will come back to haunt you. This is happening in Syria and in all countries where lives are lost. The escalation of violence will continue unabated, enemies will continue to increase until the the perceived cause of the injustice is removed. The very acts of killing, torture that you unleash on others will come back to befriend you. Be careful what you wish onto others because this is what you are wishing on yourself.

With a great deal of adulation coming from the general populous. Not sure there is a hard set rules here.

Now Syria accepted the monitors , But that gave the Alqaeda rebels and their countries behind them Time to Send more Arms and Thugs , So the Violence increased and the bombing and Massacres Started , and Off course they were Blaming the Assad regime . But Why would the Assad regime sign on to the UN plan Knowing that Hillary and her Alqaeda Lovers will Increase their Attacks on his population , Well Just like Saddam when he Agreed to the UN INSPECTORS , They did not know that was the plan of the Crooked UN , Is to send Spies to find out the Iraqi Military Installations and weapons Area .( Ask our own Scott Ridders ) . But I think Assad caught on to that pretty quick , Specially when the UN wanted Safe Area to bring help to the Syrians , I guess Just like the Medicines and they were Bringing into Lebanon During the War with Israel , They give Israel the new Weapons tech. and they were Trying to send Lebanon Medicines and Bandages to help the Victims of the Israeli's Bombing . So the Lebanese Christian and Shiites Leaders told Mrs . Rice Back then , Thanks But NO Thanks.

inserted in Arab League monitors report in January 2012 is the following: As Arab League monitors to begin their limited inspection, they can reveal that 403 Syrian children have already been killed in Bashar al-Assad's months of crackdown on democratic dissent. At least 39 of them died in the country's torture dungeons – their mutilated little bodies, in some cases, returned home to grief-stricken parents. These new figures are drawn from the monitor's painstaking analysis and cross-checking of reports emerging from the country. Assad's killing machine has targeted protests, homes, even hospitals. The rogue dictator has adopted Stalinist logic: kill or imprison every voice of dissent, no matter how young.
