A photo from the Edmonton Police Service in Canada shows Travis Brandon Baumgartner, 21.
A man sought in a fatal armored-car robbery at the University of Alberta was arrested Saturday at a U.S. border crossing, police told Canadian media.
Edmonton police Sgt. Dave Reitzel said Travis Baumgartner, 21, was stopped at the crossing in Lynden, Wash., the CBC reported. The crossing is southeast of Vancouver, British Columbia, and north of Seattle.
Baumgartner had been sought since the four armored-car guards he was working with were shot at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, early Friday. Three of the guards were killed, one critically wounded. No students were involved, police said.
Police said that Baumgartner was alone in a Ford F-150 pickup when he was stopped and that they found money in the truck. Reuters reported that Mike Milne, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman in Seattle, said Baumgartner had a backpack with $334,000 in Canadian currency.
Reuter reported that Scott Pattison, a spokesman for the Edmonton Police Service, said no extradition proceedings were necessary because Baumgartner had been caught at the border. Customs officials said Baumgartner would be transferred to Canadian custody Saturday night.
Baumgartner has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. He and four other guards with G4S Cash Solutions were loading money into bank machines on the campus when the shooting occurred, police said. Michelle Shegelski , 26; Eddie Rejano, 39; and Brian Ilesic, 35, were killed, The Associated Press reported. Another guard was critically injured.
Baumgartner lived with his mother and step-sister in Sherwood Park, just east of Edmonton, the AP said.

Sadly, in Canada, even for the most despicable crime, the maximum 'life sentence' is only 25yrs without parole. Not 50-60+ years. The justice system in Canada has continuously failed our victims and their families. We've had mothers and fathers who've murdered their own children, and they're walking and living among us after only serving a few years in prison. Pedophiles live in the same neighborhoods where our children play on the playgrounds, etc. and we are not allowed to know their names or who they are, because they have to be protected. Who protects the victims? Giving someone the death penalty can't bring back the lives that these people took, but a life sentence should be just that. These criminals need to be kept locked in a cell until they take their last breath. They need to have absolutely everything taken away from them like the families of their victims.
CanuckMommy ... that's incorrect. Do you really think Paul Bernardo will ever see the light of day? Or the pig-farmer what's-his-name? A life-sentence is just that; life. 25 years without parole means that they can't even apply for parole for 25 years. They don't open the cell and let them out after 25 years. Clifford Olson died an old man in prison as will this cretin.
You're right, 80'sGirl. And thanks for pointing that out :-) I should have researched that before my comment.
There's an international APB out on this guy and he goes to a policed border crossing?? Here's a tip for all you perps out there--if you have the IQ of a rock, crime is not your calling.
such little insight as to the eventual outcome of his actions
he just looks stupid
if canada doesn't have the death penalty, i hope they consider establishing it... this is the perfect crime for it
Good work Sgt. Reitzel. Now, could you and some of your finest help us at the Mexican border? It would greatly be appreciated.
I hope Canada gives him the death pentality, and hope it isn't like the USA wait 20 years then excute them.....They need to put him to death as soon as possible...He doesn't deserve to breathe another breath of air...KILL HIM!!!
I still feel safer on a Canadian street then I do on an American street. Any time your in a place with other humans, your at risk from a syco nut job, no matter what country your in.
We should hire Canadians to guard the U.S. borders on the south.
and all the stupid people have spoken, spelled incorrectly, brought politics and etc into this horrible story............freedom of speech should be only for the educated!
This is one of the reasons we need to secure our border. This man who allegedly murdered someone, was caught trying to cross into our country. I think Americans mistakenly think people who want to emigrate to America are hard working, honest people who want a chance at a better life. I'm sure the majority are, but it's not 100% and we need to know who is coming here.
This story isn't really a good "We need to secure our borders better" story - he was caught, by the existing structure, at a manned border crossing station. Now, if he had gotten in, and been caught in Kansas City or something - it would be an excellent story.
Condolences to the friends and loved ones of the deceased and injured.
Glad they caught this killer. He will spend the rest of his days wallowing in a cell, thinking about what he did, and how he ruined so many lives. Including his own.
Off the street, thankfully.
Death penalty supporter or not, this guy deserves the maximum allowable most heinous punishment allowed. This was cold blooded murder. Wish him nothing but the worst for the rest of his miserable life.
What USA needs to do is close all the borders,North and South. We in Montana have a canadian on death row for killing two Indian Youths about 28 years ago and now he wants clemency,he's now in touch with his family, but the two Indian Youths don't get to talk and visit their family. Canadian's should just stay in their country, real sick and tired of these Immigrants coming to USA and doing crimes and try to get off of their execution.
I grew up right next to the Lynden / Aldergrove border. Being a Canadian now living in the States (my wife is American) I am glad that the US Customs work with the Canadian RCMP. Before 911 it was easy to cross the border without them checking your identification and at that Lynden crossing many years ago a customs agent was killed, there were scores of local Canadian police and RCMP that crossed the border that day to help catch the murderer. Justice knows no boundries, but neither do idiots. The border acts as a protection both ways to keep out the lowest forms of humans. On the other hand, iving on the border the birds, deer, even fish cross the border each day and enjoy more freedom than US or Canadians do.
He looks neanderthal, glad they caught this animal. How sick, to double cross his coworkers and take their lives for a few extra temporary dollars.
Isn't a murder conviction in Canada aboot 3 years?
While there are no measures available to prevent such a thing from happening, swift and sure punishment of the perp. would be a natural deterrent. I'm no fan of capital punishment only because of the number of innocents convicted; however, it takes no rocket scientist to figure this 'un out. So many lives snuffed and forever altered for the sake of a buck. Arg! Make an exception, Canada, or send him to Texas.
It seems when we had Ol Sparky or the gas chambers people didn't seem to kill as much or they decided to shoot it out with the cops which seemed to end in their demise.
When you put a person down by lethal injection seems moot, not enough to stop the senslles murders fron happening, but I think if they are convicted without any doubt like many, give them 2 appeals and light their evil azz up. No 20 years or so to appeal because they didn't have a good lawyer. If all evidence points to the act and no doubt, than do it.
Gary Gilmore made Utah execute him back in I think 76 or 77, he said he deserved it and get on with it, but many bleeding hearts tried to stop it. he finally got his wish and went out like a man, firing squad. Even tho he was a murder, I have to respect him for manning up. Now most killers are afraid to die even by lethal injection, thats why they continue to appeal bogus reasons.
Personally if your going to kill someone expect to die and the sooner the better for society.
The S.O.B should swing for the murders of these guards
Hey that new guy Travis, seems like a good guy.Poor guys,I doubt they suspected the guy they were working with was going to murder them, pure evil.Send him to Texas, they know what to do with evil.
He'll get a Lite Setence,Look at the Karla Holmoka case,a Travesty
Oh boy, he's pretty!! They are going to have a good'ol time with him in prison. Dude, don't drop the soap!!!
He doesn't have a forehead!?
I'm Jewish with a big nose, and I own a Kosher Deli, in Sarasota, Fl, yet I don't eat pork, I'm a cheap bastard & I look like Gene Shalic, Ron Jeremy.
But, you're right, he looks like Herman Monster, Brian Bosworth, yet again most Law Enforcement, Public safety, security reps have the same look, Big heads, broad shoulders and no necks. Oh, wait a minute, I'm racial profiling, oops?
I'm Joan Rivers, Bitter Botox Freak, and I approve this message.
