A photo from the Edmonton Police Service in Canada shows Travis Brandon Baumgartner, 21.

A man sought in a fatal armored-car robbery at the University of Alberta was arrested Saturday at a U.S. border crossing, police told Canadian media.

Edmonton police Sgt. Dave Reitzel said Travis Baumgartner, 21, was stopped at the crossing in Lynden, Wash., the CBC reported. The crossing is southeast of Vancouver, British Columbia, and north of Seattle.

Baumgartner had been sought since the four armored-car guards he was working with were shot at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, early Friday. Three of the guards were killed, one critically wounded. No students were involved, police said.

Police said that Baumgartner was alone in a Ford F-150 pickup when he was stopped and that they found money in the truck. Reuters reported that Mike Milne, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman in Seattle, said Baumgartner had a backpack with $334,000 in Canadian currency.

Reuter reported that Scott Pattison, a spokesman for the Edmonton Police Service, said no extradition proceedings were necessary because Baumgartner had been caught at the border. Customs officials said Baumgartner would be transferred to Canadian custody Saturday night.

Baumgartner has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. He and four other guards with G4S Cash Solutions were loading money into bank machines on the campus when the shooting occurred, police said. Michelle Shegelski , 26; Eddie Rejano, 39; and Brian Ilesic, 35, were killed, The Associated Press reported. Another guard was critically injured.

Baumgartner lived with his mother and step-sister in Sherwood Park, just east of Edmonton, the AP said.

I have worked in the armored car field. Back in the late 70s is used to be harder to be an armored car person than it was to be a cop because the union was so strong and they made such good money. Then in the 80s the goverment did away with the teamsters in the armored car industry and now they make around 14 dollars an hour. They have a much higher mortality rate than poilice and get paid 1/6th the money. Why are you surprised when some guy making @!$%# money deciedes that he wants what is in the truck for himself. They gave me a fking 2 dollar ice scraper for a christmas bonus, I feel bad for the people that were killed, but the guilty parties are the scumbag companies that pay people like slaves. You get what you pay for.

I don't understand why Armored Car Guards don't get paid what they deserve?

They risk their lives every day, just the same as Cops, but their income isn't even close to being equal. That's the difference between the Private sector and local state, county, city and federal jobs all paid thru tax dollars, some even have their own labor unions.

If Contracted Armored Car Guard services paid better, they could be more selective as to who they hire. Instead, they are forced to settle with less desirable guard associates.

The Banks are the Rat Finks, They own the lives of consumers, and always go with the lowest contracter bids, yet expect the most in return.

I hope the families of the victims are able to sue the crap out of someone, for their losses.

21 years old, a baby with a gun who watched the wrong movie or TV show. What was he thinking? Well, he probably doesn't know HOW to think. And yes, no conscience, but also purely ignorant. Like he wasn't going to get caught. Maybe he's gotten away with some small time stuff and thought from that there was the possibility of getting away with his crime. So how did he get the job? A security guard somewhere, yes; an armored car guard with a weapon, clearly no. Better psychological screening may have caught this joker. Big money temptation, too.

After reading some/most of these postings, I find that the majority have no idea what the Ciminal Justice System is about - either in the US, Canada or anywhere else. Perhaps you should start with a book by Cesare Beccaria "Crime and Punishment" to understand how punishment is delivered for crimes committed. Since it was written in the 17th/18th century, it is still really accurate and even thogh some "reforms" have been tried, mostly with failures, the human race strives to perfect a system that will always have a criminal population to it, as human nature sometimes overrides the "right thing to do".

Please get educated and read the article before you make inane statements.

The only problem with the DEATH penalty is......it takes 20 or MORE years to get it done. I agree there are cases that need appeals, but the cut and dried ones should never take more than a week to apply justice.
