A man sought in a fatal armored-car robbery at the University of Alberta was arrested Saturday at a U.S. border crossing, police told Canadian media.
Edmonton police Sgt. Dave Reitzel said Travis Baumgartner, 21, was stopped at the crossing in Lynden, Wash., the CBC reported. The crossing is southeast of Vancouver, British Columbia, and north of Seattle.
Baumgartner had been sought since the four armored-car guards he was working with were shot at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, early Friday. Three of the guards were killed, one critically wounded. No students were involved, police said.
Police said that Baumgartner was alone in a Ford F-150 pickup when he was stopped and that they found money in the truck. Reuters reported that Mike Milne, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman in Seattle, said Baumgartner had a backpack with $334,000 in Canadian currency.
Reuter reported that Scott Pattison, a spokesman for the Edmonton Police Service, said no extradition proceedings were necessary because Baumgartner had been caught at the border. Customs officials said Baumgartner would be transferred to Canadian custody Saturday night.
Baumgartner has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. He and four other guards with G4S Cash Solutions were loading money into bank machines on the campus when the shooting occurred, police said. Michelle Shegelski , 26; Eddie Rejano, 39; and Brian Ilesic, 35, were killed, The Associated Press reported. Another guard was critically injured.
Baumgartner lived with his mother and step-sister in Sherwood Park, just east of Edmonton, the AP said.

And just where did this 'Mensa member' (NOT!) think he was going to exchange all that money -or even portions of it-without raising suspicion. No way was he even going to get over the border. I think he watched too many 'armed robbery' movies!!
I think he's lacking in thousands of brain cells. He's a pathetic callus murderer with absolutely nothing to offer society. I'm sure he has been a loser all of his life. This type of person should just be shot instead of being fed in some prison. Why keep him around? He didn't mind killing innocent men!
Not all that hard to spend Canadian currency, especially in the northern border states.
I used to travel to Otawa on business several times a year. Had no problem spending US dollars. (Of course all the change was Canadian.)
On Feb. 29, 2012 in Pittsburgh, PA, an armored car guard shot his partner and made off with $2M. The suspect, a young man in his 20's was apprehended in Florida on April 24, 2012 and later extradited back to Pennsylvania. He could end up getting the death penalty.

The $334,000 can now be used for his food, lodging, recreation, medical expenses and rehabilitation for the next 60 or so years. No lethal injection or capital punishment in Canada. Its fortunate that some criminals are able to pay their own way. Good luck with that Canada.
This one is really bad. He worked with those guys, got to know them a little, but had no trouble trying to kill all four. Also stupid because even if he walked across through the woods he would have had $350,000 Canadian dollars and a complete description of him would have been sent throughout the US. As soon as he tried to spend or exchange the Canadian currency the chase would have been on here in the states.
I suggest that his cellmate should be "Luka the Homosexual Cannabal". Now that would be justice served. get it "served", haa haa haa!
WTF! This guy killed 3 people for less than a million dollars. It's like being killed because you only have 10 bucks in your pocket. This guy must be a believer of "life is cheap". To bad no death penalty in Canada.

The real problem with the death penalty is that a recent poll suggests that 87% of people believe in some sort of after-life. If these people are going to die with a smile and the belief they're getting a do over or a new trial in the next world, then the only way to really punish them is to make them wait for death as long as possible.
To all those who say the death penalty is not a deterrant: If we had a law that said if you commit murder monday through saturday you get the death penalty, but if you commit murder on sunday you get life in prison, what day do you think most murders would be commited on? yea "oh @!$%#"

Hope he gets the maximum sentencing in Canada as he's a cold-blooded killer after "offing" his three co-workers for the cash. That much wasn't enough to live on more than 2-3 years in a new country, maybe 4 if he stretches it and now his life is ruined. I bet his day job isn't looking to bad now and regrets unfold...God's mercy to the families of the killed guards.
C'mon man! Couldn't you have used non lethal means to disable the other 4? Something like The Joker used on the Batman TV show, or was it the Penguin, dispelling knockout gas from the tip of his cane? Whatever, you're a boob and a murderer now.
