Taliban bans Pakistan polio vaccinations over drone strikes

Anja Niedringhaus / AP file

A Pakistani child is given a polio vaccination by a district health team worker outside a children's hospital in Peshawar, Pakistan on May 30, 2012.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan - A Taliban commander in Pakistan’s tribal belt has banned a vaccination campaign against child polio in protest over frequent United States drone attacks there.

Hafiz Gul Bahadur said that the U.S.-funded vaccinations for tens of thousands of children would be outlawed until drone attacks stopped.

He also said the polio campaign could be a cover for CIA espionage – a reference to Shakil Afridi, the Pakistani doctor reported to have helped American agencies identify Osama bin Laden.

A pamphlet issued in Miranshah, North Waziristan and seen by NBC News accused the U.S. of “spending billions of rupees” on anti-polio measures while causing psychological disorders “due to drone strikes and round the clock hovering of spy planes over homes and villages”.

Report: Obama embraces disputed definition of 'civilian' in drone wars

“This situation created by U.S. drone strikes is more dangerous than the polio virus,” the pamphlet said.

Pakistan is one of the three countries where polio remains endemic, according to UNICEF, accounting for about 30 percent of the world’s the polio cases. During 2011, the total number of cases was 198, up from 144 cases in 2010. There have already been 15 cases since the start of 2012.

PhotoBlog: Pakistan distributes polio vaccine

Out of the seven tribal regions, North Waziristan was perhaps one of the only places where local Ulema - or religious scholars - had issued a decree in favor of polio drops for children. The Taliban had also guaranteed the security of vaccination teams.

Afridi, a Pakistan government doctor working for the CIA, used a vaccination campaign as a cover to collect DNA samples from Osama bin Laden's family members in Abbottabad – a move that helped identify the al-Qaeda leader, paving the way for his killing in May 2011.

Afridi was given a 33-year prison term for treason following a trial last month.

Yep. And if it wasn't so sad, the level of ignorance would be absolutely hilarious.

I found this particularly ignorant:

"This situation created by US drone strikes is more dangerous than the polio virus," the pamphlet said.

Yeah, targeted strikes against militants ARE more dangerous to them than a virus that targets innocent children. Way to go, Taliban.

The poem goes as follows: "Sy and I went to the circus, Sy got kicked by a wooden horse, We'll get even with the doggone circus, We'll buy a ticket but we won't go in!" Why do we support these morons? We need to get the heck out of there, NOW. Don't tell me it's hard to do. It is not hard to do. Everyone packs their duffle bag, climbs on a plane and flies out. As far as equipment all that CAN be loaded should be and then flown out. What can't be should be blown to bits so they can't use it. That will NOT cost anymore money than we are wasting when we continue to throw it down that whole rathole of a region.

When are we as a species going to evolve beyond warmongering and focus on the important things in life, like our children, our future?

Too bad Barry leaked out the Paki Doctors name, just to get a little more publicity. Sold him out and we are just now starting to see some of the ramifications of it. The Taliban regime needs to be exterminated like the cock roaches that they are. Shame on Obama's administration and any other for that matter who wants to have a dialogue with such inhumane pure evil. Remember these are the same people who only 15 years ago used to have weekly executions in their soccer fields and beheadings of innocent women and children for spectator sport. The world would be a much better place without them regardless of their support of Al'qiada.

This is happening here in America.. Drones are now flying over major cities. We have people poisoning their young with chickenpox, hep , etc through the mail with infected lollipops. We have a whole side of American politics that want to ban health care for those who can't afford it.

Americans need to focus on rebuilding America first. We have been in Afghanistan for almost 11 years, under a misguided feeble attempt at Democracy. Afghanistan was/is and remains a distraction. The attacks were ordered from within the US on 9-11.. Israel had a hand in it as well. We have diseases here in America that are making a comeback, whooping cough, measels, etc. . If they want to kill their children in Afghanistan, so be it. Its their country, not Americas. We have millions of starving, malnourished children in America, many of who are dying, and the American people are turning their backs on them everyday! Most of America cares more about the world than they do the problems in their own backyard...

Let Afghanistan fail miserable. Its not Americas job to rebuild each and every nation and fix their problems. We can't help ourselves, why help the world?

Go ahead you sheep, blast me. But I am saying what 99% of you are thinking. We are spread way to thin around this globe that we are falling fast here at home. We are $14 Trillion in debt and the right just wants to spend more on Wars with Iran, China & Russia. Tax-cuts for the rich.. Yeah we can do that under a Mittens Presidency. Just print money from thin air like King George did, 3 times to you sheep of America.. Rebates or hand-outs, one in the same..

AMERICA & AMERICANS FIRST!!

There has only been 22 drone attacks so far this year in that country with between 128 to 156 people killed already. The total number of polio infections was 198 (2011) to 144 (2010) in the previous years, NOT DEATHS. In those same years 993 to 607 (2010) and 536 to 378 (2011) people died in drone attacks.

Simple math should tell you why they did this, not to mention the fact there might STILL be spying going on, but anytime children are involved the bleeding hearts start up, and logic goes out the window. Hate on logic all you want.

Goes to show that the Pakistani Taliban and their co-conspirators, the Haqqani network, are little more than crime syndicates. They really don't give a crap about forming a stable society or bettering the lives of their local population. All they care about is lining their own pockets and the whole Islamic Fundamentalism thing is just a facade to give them legitimacy amongst a highly religious population.

Mom and Sam.... read the story again. Why is it that Liberals are SO sure of what they DON'T know? lol...

The Taliban don't want the people giving out Polio vaccine because they fear it's a CIA cover operation. The Paki doctor who turned in Osama was working in a similar operation. He took a DNA sample to confirm his identity. It's not me "trolling" or "turning it political". Simply stating the FACTS! I'm sorry that's so hard for you to comprehend. It's truly not a right or left thing...it was just a major mistake by Barry and team to disclose the Doctors name. Why not just ignore them completely? For every person killed in a terrorist attack around the world, 58 people in THIS country die because they lack health insurance.

We live in a knee-jerk society that is fearful of all things sensational. More people die every year in this country because of accidental handgun discharges than do people from terrorist activities. Terrorism garners the headlines but the real damage is being done by high fructose corn syrup (that we subsidize).

Does anyone ever take the time to think about our priorities as a nation? All kinds of information out there about statistical probabilities. Maybe we should consult a few charts before we take action.

I feel for the children who will suffer and die from polio. The taliban will then say it was US bio warfare that caused it not refusing to let the children be vaccinated. They will never take responsibility for their actions and Pakistan will cry for medical aid from the same people who they wanted out of their country.

Pakistan people like the Taliban (they protect them and help them), so if they want to shoot themselves in the foot... big deal. I'm sure their kids are at more risk of starvation or dying of illness from dirty drinking water, etc. I'd think that polio wouldn't be at the top of their worries. That saves the taxpayers of the US money by not having to pay for this... another plus.

This, no less then the beheading of Nick Burg shows these thugs true colors. Do what we want, or we'll allow OUR OWN CHILDREN die from this disease. So let me see, in their twisted fanatical thinking, flying a plane into a building and killing thousands gets them 72 virgins, as long as the victims were declared an "enemy" in some sort of jihad. But what does allowing 10s or 100s of thousands of innocent babies from other Muslim families buy them?

They're either idiots, brainwashed to an unbelievable degree, or so utterly nepharious that they're practically evil incarnate. Stop the strikes or we'll let our babies die :o What will be next, pulling the triger on their own babies, if the drone strokes don't attack? There's no way these people could have an ounce of sanity, with actions/threats like this. Not even in war (and this jihad was one of their own creation and their own declaration), is the world so far gone they'd just let their own kids die like this, without seeing a problem with that sort of thinking....

Unfortunately, it will be innocent children and others who don't support the radical regime that will be most affected. Like so many others on this board, I say let's get the h--out of that part of the world. We aren't wanted, and we certainly don't need the grief we receive from these treacherous terrorists.

It is a very viable and effective strategy. It is mean and nasty to the children, to all the children of the world, but if some maniac kept flying over my land dropping bombs, I would consider that strategy. For once, the Taliban plays the same game the US does. Global pressure, global interests, global losses.

This is not a dumb backwoods individual, this is a dangerous person. How utterly interesting.

I have a feeling the Taliban are going to become less popular among some of their most avid supporters. Especially those with children.

Maybe those who have been victims under these POS will finally fight back...

My God they're only children...no wonder they grow up hating...

"While causing psychological disorders “due to drone strikes and round the clock hovering of spy planes over homes and villages".

We speak of the Taliban here. Their citizens have always been expendable. It will continue even if the drone attacks stop. They have the worst history for torment and abuse of their own citizens. With their well known suicide bombings, etc., that kill their citizens without a second thought, they say”we are causing "Psychological disorders"

It is a crime against humanity.

It reminds me of the sex camp the Taliban was operating near Kabul at the beginning of the war where they were using children as young as 6 as sex slaves (boys and girls). If girls got prenant, they killed them. When our troops entered Kabul, they shot all the children and stacked their bodies up (about 100 children) and burned them to try and hide what they were doing. The Taliban LOVE their children!

I find the outrage to this story rather ironic, seeing as how more and more American parents are refusing to vaccinate their own kids.

Guess this is directed at us at Northeastern Afghanistan, conducting Special Surveillance for Redacted (to determine exactly who the targets are and who are supporting them) on the Fundamentalist Islamic Pakistanis Taliban, Fundamentalist Islamic Haqquini Network, the other Fundamentalist Islamic Jihadists and calling in MQ strikes. To those that think that we target women and children, wrong, we target those supporting the Fundamentalist Islamic Jihadists (women smuggling weapons, ammunition, bomb making materials, etc.; children acting as lookouts and armed guards (just like we encountered as the Children Soldiers of Africa)), completely against US Laws as the President Obama January 21, 2009 Patriot Acts, section of No Material Support to Terrorist Organizations.

While on this side of the border as part of our Humanitarian Assistance Mission, providing Medical Visits every week to the Afghan Villages.

I previously told all of you about what the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban do/did to the Afghan children and US and International Aid Workers if caught Collaborating with the Christians, Jews, Unbelievers.

Most seem not to realize that Biological Warfare does NOT remain within the man made borders of a Nation and can spread rapidly Worldwide in an Outbreak. Didn't the H1N1 Outbreak teach any of you anything about Epidemiology.

I previously told all of you of the US History of building up Afghanistan as a 20th Century Nation as a US Ally and the results before of the US abandoning US Ally Afghanistan after Operation Cyclone, and the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban massacring all the 1980s Pro US Afghan Muhajeen (20,000 to 50,000), then also massacring their Families, Relatives, In Laws, etc. as suspected co conspirators; then they went on to massacre any suspected Collaborators to the Christians, Jews, Unbelievers, etc. to the extent that the trees at the Afghan Cities were filled with dead Afghans beaten then hung by the neck. They then grabbed the Buddhists, Taoists, etc. and poured gasoline on them and lite them on fire, screaming at them that if they want to protest by lighting themselves on fire, the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban will help them, attempted to dynamite the Great Buddhas. Eventually, the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban started to destroy everything that was "Non Islamic", "Western", "Modern", etc. and after they destroyed the Electric Power Stations the Lights literally went out at Afghanistan. Same thing they are doing at Somalia, the destruction of all the "Non Islamic", "Modern", "Western" built up during UN Mission Somalia I and UN Mission Somalia II to end the Somalis Cycles of Droughts and Famine, as Fundamentalist Islams use of Starvation as a Weapon.

I told all of you before where the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban (Afghanistan) came from, as well as how and why the Fundamentalist Islamic Pakistan Taliban was created.

This is the same as the Fundamentalist Islamic Pakistanis Taliban stopping the US/International Assistance from entering Pakistan after the flood at Pakistan, and then blaming the US (u saaah) and other Nations for not helping the people of Pakistan, since the Fundamentalist Islamic Jihadists are at the level of the people everyday the people believe the Fundamentalist Islamic Jihadists and not the US Ally Government of Pakistan nor what anyone else says.

This is NOT unusual for Fundamentalist Islamic Jihadists, this is how they are raised since birth as the Fundamentalist Islamic Belief.

              Lusitania,

If you don't believe what is happening here (Afghanistan) there is a little known highly competitive "Objective Observer" Program so that you can come here and see for yourself. By the way the MQs fly high enough to remain out of sight of the women and children used as Lookouts (kind of like the Coast Watchers of WWII, that report the speed, direction, altitude of any aircraft to the Fundamentalist Islamic Jihadists as just one of their means to defeat US "High Tech").

Not to discourage you Lusitania, in most cases the experienced (with Combat) International News Media get the slots for the "Objective Observer" Program; I previously unwillingly participated in providing this program until it was suspended for us (recently reinstated) after not allowing the "Objective Observer" to leave after the second day, the only "Objective Observer" that stayed the whole week was a 3rd Infantry Division Soldier (he wrote that it was amusing that there are those that are worse off than "grunts"), the DOD US Civilian from Iraq stayed for about 3 days, the DOD US Civilian from Germany stayed for 1 day, the US Civilian stayed for 2 days and demanded we get him the hell out of here. It is not the case that we can call in a helicopter to extract them and compromise our Teams positions.

Those of you that seem to believe that the Fundamentalist Islamic Jihadists are "just the Radicals" in small numbers, need to go Research just how many of the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban (Afghanistan), Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban (Pakistan), Fundamentalist Islamic Haqquini Network (Afghanistan, Pakistan), Fundamentalist Islamic Army of Islam (Pakistan, not the US Ally Pakistanis Military), Fundamentalist Islamic Hamas Foreign Fighters, Fundamentalist Islamic International Franchise of Al Quada (and all their offshoots like Fundamentalist Islamic Ansar Al Islam), Fundamentalist Islamic Jihadist Foreign Fighters (Chechen, Yemen, Kurdistanis, etc.) there are. Then research who is Fully Supporting them with 21st Century Weapons from the Russian Federation and Chinese, Funding, Islamic Sanctuary, their Special Forces Quds Training the Fundamentalist Islamic Jihadists, etc. as stated by General McChrystal based on captured evidence; with General McChrystal getting a Letter of Reprimand for saying this to the International News Media as against President Obama's March 2009 Policy (go research President Obama's March 2009 Policy, the title says it all).

sobi- The US has every right to protect itself from people who openly want to destroy us. In any land. The Pakistani's have proven they like playing both sides. We can not trust them, so we will do it our self. Like all terrorist leaders who use mentally challenged kids for suicide bombers, they are afraid to die for their beliefs. Common sense tells a sane person, Bin laden was scared when we raided his compound and I wish I could have seen the look on his face when the US Seals kicked in his door. His kind are not men of honor, just murdering cowards to use kids and women as shields.

How about we worry about America and let these counties take care of themselves. All these news reports are used to get the masses worked up so when we do attack them no one cares. We keep attacking other countries with wreakless abandon and it will come back to us 10 fold. I am sick and tired of our troop being put in harms way for nothing but profit and greed. They hate the Jews so much that they want them annihilated and they own all the land in the Middle East except Isreal! Why do they want that LITTLE piece of land? The Jews have been persecuted throughout history yet they still become doctors and lawyers who try to save humanity: and yet are vilified. Muslim extremists are such losers. They are probably uneducated (except on the Koran) and they don't know how to save humanity or do anything productive because they are all a tribal backward people................they must find a place in the world to prove themselves and blowing up children and people are the only way they can do it. They are haters and only want to kill.....

The media announce everywhere the president is, especially if he makes a secret mission to visit hostile places like the Middle East. I guess people forget those old WWII propaganda posters: loose talk can cost lives or loose lips sinks ships.

I don't know who leaked what but, I think the best thing Obama could have done was send the seals back in after that Dr.

It would have stopped all the "Obama leaked it himself" talk, it would have put these backwards sandeaters back in their place and most importantly it would save a man who put himself in great danger to help the interests of the US

Still we don't know who leaked the doctor's name. It's doubtful the President would have leaked the name himself, what would be his motivation?

I think they are doing this to see what the US will do. If we continue the drone strikes they could claim that we would rather kill a few militants than save innocent children.

Russia is probably having a good laugh these days since it was our federal gov who put the tilaban in power in the first place, talking about logic.

Everybody needs to remember they are talking about a culture that doesn't hesitate to put rape victims to death instead of the rapist. What can any expect from a society that burns schools along with taking lives of teachers & little girls who seek basic education.

Are we any less different than the Taliban, do we not have people in this country who are right now attacking women health with similar tactics? I would suggest we clean house at home first, a few intolerant lynchings would go a long way for the 80% to get there voice heard again over religious intolerance or we could vote our own fanatical party completely out of office and send a one time message that we are not Pakistan. I hope this will get your juices flowing enough to vote out the pu-tang fanatics.

Christians don't slice off women's lips with a razor blade for wearing lipstick here and we also don't mutilate female children's genitals to keep them virgins till marriage. Yes there are some whacked out people that call themselves Christians but as a group we don't single out people to kill because of some idyllic belief.

Taliban and Christian fundamentalists do share one belief, they think everyone should assimilate to their beliefs.

Sounds like the Fox version of the contraception debate, if the Church wants to be in the healthcare business they need to cover what is the norm, or get out of that business.

Change, you are delusional! Name me one woman in relative recent history that the GOP or Christians as a group have killed or spilled their blood. Just one. I'm pretty certain with the tap of a few keys I can pull up a list of Muslim women who have be killed or maimed for not adhering to the Muslim faith. Someone not condoning tax money to go toward paying for birth control or an abortion is not murdering someone. I personally think that women can make their own decisions. I may not agree with the choice all make but It is each ones own choice. Christians don't believe you should be killed for having an abortion. We may not like it but we aren't on stand by to go on a murdering spree to make someone pay for making that choice. Yes there have been people that have called themselves Christians that have murdered doctors for performing abortions but it is not condoned by Christians to do so. I for one will say the people who kill the Doctors for giving abortions should pay the consequences for their actions.

I have no idea why you should think I am left, I simply see the writing on the wall. Like people in 1934 figuring Europe would be at war by 1939. I had no idea my audience would be so sensitive an individual, I do apologise and are you not happy not to be a poor women in Kansas? Did I hit to close to home. The welfare of all Americans is a national security issue. At the beginning of WWII there were to many men/women that were not fit to fight in our military because of poverty. Thank your lucky stars for Roosevelt limiting the damage or we could now be speaking dutch. I am simply pointing out the similarities between our two cultures in a way ment to alert you and others to the danger we ourselves face should we allow two classes of health care and law to exist or in this case continue, one for the privileged and another for the less privileged or poor.

As for being left I could go on and on and on about my service to this nation but then you yourself I am sure have served as valiantly. We could spend days measuring, but then that would assume you can measure. Instead I will leave you with my favorite saying you may share with your bar stool patriots "Do not send the troops until you have run out of nukes". Once again I am sorry to have hurt your sensitive feelings.

You cannot even possibly begin to compare female genital mutilation, "sewing up" until marriage, not allowing women to get an education, not allowing women any rights, making them stay covered at all times, treating them as property, selling teenage daughters to old men, honor killings, selective sex abortions, and on and on and on, to the issues of abortion and contraception. That is absolutely crazy, then you suggest "intolerant lynchings" of those who don't agree with you, who is it that is sounding like the Taliban then?

Richard that comes from tea party controlled states who spend their days taking away womens rights rather than actually trying to solve problems. However what that has to do with the topic on hand is beyond me.

The Taliban wants their children exposed to polio and unprotected, really not our problem. If Pakistan wouldn't be a safe haven for terrorists then we wouldn't have an issue with them, if you don't want to be killed by drones stop hanging around terrorists. I fail to see how this is our problem, if the Taliban thinks American's are really going to be swayed by this they are wrong.

From their reaction, the drone strikes must be really hurting the Taliban. Just another reason to keep them up.

So, to keep children from becoming terrorists themselves, we should watch currently innocent children suffer a painful and horrific death by polio. By the way, they won't all hold an AK-47... some of them are girls and they'll suffer all their lives. I'll never understand sitting back and watching children suffer and die and refusing to do anything about it. No child, even the child of a terrorist, deserves to suffer for any actions of the parents. It's not the fault of the children, ever.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. But I am saying its going to be difficult and take more then 10 years. Whatever it takes I suppose but we can't let them drag down the rest of the world with children living in it. Maybe the Taliban should adopt a "don't have any children" law.

tom mc: Why should it be limited? I am afraid I will never understand the USA's insistence on giving any aid (including humanitarian aid) to any country or group of people who are blatantly against the USA in either their statements or actions. As far as any of our "friends" helping them we need to make sure they understand that while we cannot stop them we can in the future reduce any aid we might extend to them by a like amount. Is this harsh, yes. But why should we be looking out for everybody else's best interest and not our own.
