Mexico captures suspected son of most wanted drug lord 'El Chapo'

MEXICO CITY - Jesus Alfredo Guzman, to be the son of Mexico’s most wanted drug gang boss “El Chapo,” it believed to have been captured, officials in the country said Thursday.

A man suspected to be Jesus Alfredo was held in the western state of Jalisco on Thursday morning, the Navy said in a statement.

His father Joaquin Guzman - nicknamed “Shorty,” or "El Chapo" in Spanish - escaped a Mexican jail in a laundry cart in 2001 and runs the Sinaloa cartel, arguably the country's most powerful gang.

Drug violence in Mexico has exploded over the last decade, and there have been more than 55,000 drug-related killings since President Felipe Calderon took office in December 2006.

One killed every half hour in Mexico drug-related violence

Thursday's arrest comes just over week before Mexico votes for a new president. The ruling National Action Party has lost support due to the drug violence ravaging the country. The constitution bars Calderon from running for re-election.

A video "mockumentary" that shows children as kidnappers, corrupt cops and drug traffickers sparked a fierce debate in violence-torn Mexico. Msnbc.com's Dara Brown reports.

The U.S. Treasury said last month Americans were banned from doing any business with two of Guzman's sons, who were identified as Ivan Guzman and Ovidio Guzman, under the terms of the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act.

"Mexico captures suspected son of most wanted drug lord 'El Chapo'"

So now possibly being related to someone who is wanted is grounds for being "captured" (kidnapped) by Mexican police?

What was this mans crime, being born?

It is elections next month in Mexico, so PAN is desperate. Also, the question is whether Chapo's son will ever serve a day in prison. If Pena Nieto wins next month, I will guarantee he will never serve a day.

El Chapo's biggest challenge with going to prison will probably be things like playing 9 holes of golf with people like Bernie Madoff.

The US was told not to do any business with the Guzman boys because Mexico didn't want our government to find out the Mexican government was already neck deep in business with them.

You don't extract ore from the mines in Mexico, haul it to the docks, load it on tankers, travel the shipping lanes to China, sell it to a world power with whom you have established a viable working relationship, without the help and official approval of the government of the country you are taking the ore from.

The fricking Mexican army could easily intercept ore shipments from mines to freighters, and you can't hide docks and freighters from the government the way they claim the drug routes into the US are hidden.

Actually the son is part of the Sinola cartel, and has a laundry list of crimes of his own that he has to answer for. He wasn't arrested for being just the son of a known drug dealer boss, he's a drug dealer lieutenant.

55,000 people dead. According to the U.N. the number of people that it takes to be classified as a war crime is 5,000.

So what i'm thinking is, why the mexican government have yet to declare the drug cartels, nothing more than terrorist cells, and take them out accordingly.

Or we could solve this issue by taking their profits from them by ending prohibition? Without our prohibition no one would know who "El Chapo" is and these criminal gangs would not exist in their current form. Our prohibitionist laws have killed 55,000.

The Mexican government should have changed his nickname to "El Dead-o" when they had the chance.

I couldn't even read this story. "Suspected son" in the headlie and then "Jesus Alfredo Guzman, to be the son of Mexico’s most . . ." Is there a pending adoption?

Do these "journalists" ever read what they've typed?

Apparently proof reading is no longer required in News Media circles or beyond their competency.

I think they are always trying to be the first to get the story published. They don't have time to proof.

Is capturing this psychopathic troll going to stop anything on either side of the borer? Probably not. Send in some SF's, break him out of prison, put him on a chopper and throw out at 10K feet. One less drug knucklehead to be conc erned about.

PLEASE FIX THE GRAMMAR, SPELLING, and TYPOS in this article. It is an embarassing statement that NBC and REUTERS would let these errors be published. The don't even work as errors which could be claimed as "Spanish-to-English" translation mistakes.

    Just sloppy reporting folks.

      Reply#13 - Thu Jun 21, 2012 8:50 PM EDT

Below, please read the first sentence of this article. The grammar is poor, The spell-checquer needs to be HUMAN and not electronic to assure that appropriate words were chosen. The punctuation is, at best, poorly used.

Please do not blame errors on translations of an original article written in Spanish. The word choice errors do not correlate to even sloppy Spanish translations.

Clearly, a lot of us feel the same way.

Just a sad statement of the quality of writing published by NBC and Reuters reporters and editors.

Everyone in America is not excluded from such an order. The ATF under the direction of Attorney General Eric Holder sells firearms to the Sinola Cartel with impunity. Even congress is unable to make Eric Holder accountable. Eric Holder has more authority than the entire United States Congress and he has proved it many times. In your face, congress.

Those firearms weren't PROVIDED or "SOLD" by the ATF to the Sinola Cartel. They were sold by corrupt, licensed Texas firearms dealers, under secret surveillance by the ATF, who were knowingly, willfully, breaking the law by selling firearms to people they knew were Mexican Nationals. The ATF mistakenly thought that they could track and recover these illegally sold weapons. These types of illegal weapons sales can only be stopped by revoking the firearms licenses and confiscating the inventories of all border states weapon dealers and requiring those states residents to make legal gun purchases through a Federal Agency.

          #15.1 - Fri Jun 22, 2012 1:11 PM EDT

WRONG! Coocoomoe , the ATF and Goons of Eric Holder purchased the firearms and sold them to the drug gangs with no intention of tracing them.

So you guys are in favor of gun control? That's great. I agree - lets control the sale of guns.

I agree with you. Lets prosecute the Bush administration Republican officials that started the gunwalking program "Wide Receiver" in 2006 which allowed guns to be sold to Mexico and lost them...

Oh wait, you don't give a damn about guns walking or gun control or straw purchases or dead agents. All you want to do is go after the president because you're paranoid that the fact that he HASN'T implemented any gun control measures means he secretly wants to ban all guns.

Now start cutting off his fingers, one at a tme, and send them to El Chapo who is really El Diablo.

Hey El Chapo, your boy will look very funny in the family photographs minus his fingers. Hole El Chapo, eye for an eye mi hermano...

Mexico is a place where no one wants to live and so many die because of their corruption from top to bottom. What a pity for the fine hard working Mexicans who obey laws and stick to it in their country of origin.

Black ops, lets go into the interior and do some real damage.

Why is it so much to expect every article to have a date? This is just one more that if it weren't for the date on the posts, I wouldn't know if this article was yesterday's or last month's.

Wow, brilliant writing here at MSNBC. I'm constantly catching typos, grammatical mistakes, and just straight-up poor writing styles in their stories. Not to say that all of them are like that, but geeze. You'd think a major news organization would do a little better job of proofreading their stories before posting them up. It makes you look sloppy and unprofessional, and thus, unreliable. If they're not checking for something so simple as errors in composition, how do we know they're actually checking their sources?

Eric Holder and Obama armed these killers. They should be arrested but can't because Obama will not release the evidence by excecutive order.

Oh my ... look at all the people celebrating the drug war and the capture.. how cute.. make sure to pat each other on the back and do a victory lap.

Of course you do know that over 20 hours ago it was discovered the man is a USED CAR SALESMAN and there WERE NO GRENADES, there WERE NO 100k in cash.?

Like everything DEA and drug war, you were lied to, and you actually appreciated it.

Scary eh? They can just bust into a car salesman's house and say he had 100k and grenades to 'justify' it and make it look oh so victorious..

And yet it was all one big lie.. and you not only BOUGHT it..it costs us all 15 billion on just a federal level, every year. For LIES.

Ha.. have a good day. Think about it next time before you do a victory dance over ANYTHING the DEA has to say about the 'drug war' and Mexico.

SOme of you called for this poor guys execution..

Just please THINK before you take whatever the traitorous and money laundering DEA tell you. Our DEA very much touted this as the most important arrest in years.

                  Anyone need a used car?
