CAIRO, Egypt – The Muslim Brotherhood has won the presidency. Will it bring a new Egypt? I can’t see how it won’t.
This morning a Christian woman I’ve known casually for years came up to me and asked if I could help her seek political asylum in the United States. Many Christians, women and moderate Muslims worry about the Muslim Brotherhood’s promise to bring Islamic Law. It’s not a good sign if the day after elections that people are asking how they can escape the country.
Last night in Tahrir Square Muslim Brotherhood members were celebrating their victory, calling it not a win for democracy, but divine intervention. They acknowledged that a free vote brought them to power, but saw God’s hand filling the ballot boxes.
In an analysis piece last week I asked, if democracy brings a non-democratic party, is that a win for democracy? Today some Egyptians don’t think so and have considerable buyers’ remorse, feeling the cliché, "be careful of what you wish for."
Big changes are in store for Egypt now that Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, once banned in Egypt, has won Egypt's first democratic presidential election. NBC's Richard Engel reports.
Egyptians face a new Egypt under the Muslim Brotherhood
In Tahrir Square street vendors now sell badges with Mohammed Morsi's photograph. Some Egyptians wear them to show support and solidarity, like wearing a U.S. presidential campaign pin. I bought one. It’s sitting on my desk now in Cairo. The laminated badge also has the Muslim Brotherhood’s logo of two crossed swords with a Quran between the blades. Beneath the swords is a single phrase, “And Prepare.”
It’s a quote from the Quran which in the light of the Brotherhood’s win deserves elaboration.
“And prepare” comes from the Quran’s Chapter 8 on "the spoils of war." The full quote is:
“And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them whom you do not know [but] whom Allah knows. And whatever you spend in the cause of Allah will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.”
“And Prepare” means to prepare for battle against God’s enemies.
When I think about the Muslim Brotherhood, I remember a hot, sticky evening in 1998 when I was working as a local journalist in Cairo. I was in the lawyers' syndicate building in central Cairo.
The syndicate was, and still is, dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood. I had many contacts there and was a frequent visitor. That evening, I sat drinking strong coffee with a group of about a half dozen members of the Brotherhood. We spoke for hours.
I remember the conversation vividly because I have had so many just like it. The Brotherhood members mostly talked about Israel. They were obsessed with the Mossad, Israel’s powerful spy agency. According to them, the Mossad ran everything in the Middle East.
They also said America was at war with Islam. They told me Osama bin Laden was an American creation. They talked about how Jews ran the world, and how the only group as powerful as the Mossad was the "Jewish Lobby" in Washington. Jews and Israel, they said, used America’s muscle to dominate the Arab world through proxy dictators like Mubarak. They told me how Israel was deliberately exporting chemicals that spread AIDS and cancer among Egyptians.
Eric Trager, a fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, studies Egyptian opposition groups. He spoke with NBC News' Charlene Gubash about what the Muslim Brotherhood victory means for the U.S. and the region.
Egypt's Morsi: Bloodshed will not be in vain
They told me the Americans people, whom they considered decent and God fearing, were ignorant of the games played on them by Jews and their lobby. One Jewish-Israeli-American conspiracy rolled into the next.
I remember thinking all those 15 years ago as I sipped coffee and looked around at the syndicate, I hope these guys don't come to power. But even then I suspected one day it would happen – there were simply too many Egyptians who thought just like the people drinking coffee in the syndicate.
They packed the universities and professional unions. They wrote the little paperback books sold on blankets on Cairo sidewalks linking Saddam Hussein, Osama bin Laden, the Bush family, the Jewish Lobby, Freemasons and of course the Mossad in elaborate plots against Egypt and Muslims.
There are clearly many Egyptian free-thinkers and intellectuals -- lots of wonderful Egyptian artists and architects and scientists. But the conversation I was having in the syndicate was much more common.
Morsi now talks about moderation. Western diplomats hope he means it and that the Brotherhood will have to become more pragmatic now that it will have to actually run a government. That could very well happen, but pragmatism seems unlikely to erase a mentality that is deeply ingrained and which will, especially in time of crisis, expose itself sooner or later.

Morsi still has to battle with the military for power. The military holds key authorities which it took through steps that were probably illegal. The army’s position looks weaker now that the Brotherhood has won an election that was widely considered free and fair.
Egypt took a big turn last night. I hope now the Brotherhood can move beyond a mentality of conspiracies and turn this country into a success. If it can’t, the Middle East faces a tough road ahead.

It's sure that they are, quietly, behind the scenes, celebrating in the White House ! Oh, I'm sure Obama will make many pronouncements about ' holding Morsis' feet to the fire, acountability, blah blah blah. Privately he'll be telling Morsi, just as he did Medvedav , just wait untill I'm re-elected and then we can do some deals !
Obama should be so happy for this new President who happens to be a huge supporter for Iran and wants to build strong ties with that country, Isamic rule and break away the peace from Israel. Obama should be so proud of himself for sticking his nose into other countries affairs and showing support for a extremist group who also said to all egyptian we must hate Americans which was on the news today. I have a question, will the United States continue giving foreign aid to Egypt? We have averaged approximately $2 billion a year since 1979. So.........are we going fund the Muslims who want us eliminate off the face of the earth???

As a woman, I think I know why Bush and Cheney needed to unemploy half the population of males. So the Koch and Norquist honchos could hire them to become right wing shills. Reading this article I thought "Wow, Egypt has some really crazy people that make up some crazy conspiracies." Then I read the comments here from crazy people trying to link Obama with supporting these crazies and I think " Wow, we have some really crazy people that make up some crazy ass conspiracies." Maybe to be paranoid and crazy is a human condition.
I have seen a lot mean spirited posts by both left and right leaning on these sites through the years, but I think ewent ranks in the top tier as most delusional and offensive.

IMHO... I don't think Obama is pleased with the election result. In fact, I'll bet he is crapping his pants about now.
I think the decisions this administration has made involving the entire Egyptian episode over the last 2 years was because of campaign promises to take a back seat in the middle east. Obama had to back the uprising when it became clear it had grown to the point of being uncontrollable. At that point, he had to pick a side. Since the popular sentiment was with the people and their dream of "democracy", a short-sighted decision was made. After all, what else could Obama have done at that point? The uprising had gone on too long. Intervention was required much sooner, but because the decision to take a "back seat" had been made, we had to save face and allow the events to transpire without direct involvement.
As the story said, "be careful what you wish for". In this case, a people longing to serve their God more than man has decided to bring into power an entity that almost certainly means an end to a peaceful existence with Israel, and an end to peace for its 15-20% Christian population. While Obama knew this was a distinct possibility, he had to take a "back seat" as he promised to do and allow the events to transpire. Will the ends (that are yet to be seen) justify the means? To appease a few, the entire region is about to be turned upside-down, except for radical Islam, of course...
This is why the Syrian conflict has been drug out for so long. President Obama KNOWS the Russians are right in many respects. Mr. President now has the on-the-job experience needed in foreign policy to understand to keep his hands off - for the sake of something greater. Now he is caught between a rock and a hard place. The job of POTUS is not as easy as making campaign promises. When you sit in the 'big-boy' seat, everything changes.
Egypt was a lesson in what not to do. Never forget the total lack of experience this president had when he came into office on promises of hope and change. Promises made due to a lack of understanding... Syria is a lesson in what one 'has to do'. Syria would have gone much smoother if Egypt had been handled correctly in the first place. Hindsight is 20/20, but experience is priceless!

ewent, I read many posts of yours this weekend, never occurred to me you were a woman. But none the less, I was pleased with your defense, I know it is tiresome. Many of these political arguments are cyclic redundancy.
The man or women really doesn't matter in this venue because the written word carries just as much weight no matter. The voice I hear speaking to me, that of my own conscience, tempers most of the verbiage down to a modest suggestion.
We will never be identical, we being everybody. The differences between us are welcomed. I don't want to be like everybody else, and I'm sure everybody wants to be themselves, therefor we will never agree. So we agree to disagree. And that's fine.

Nobama called to offer his congrats to the Muslim Brotherhood today. Nobama will continue giving aid to Egypt because he has always said he would side with the Muslims. Our US troops are dying in a war to stop terrorism and Nobama supports the brotherhood-what sense does that make? Nobama wanted the former pres. of Egypt out so he could get his muslim brothers in. It is so obvious that the nobama adm. is helping the muslims wage their war on Christians around the world, the US included. The people in this country better open their eyes as to what is really going on around them come next election and get that *#@*%*! out of office. Obama did do the RIGHT thing. Not necessarily what is right for us, but what was right for humanity. The majority of Egypt are nutty conservatives. Don't they too deserve to have a government that reflects them? You can't point at the plight of the minority when you stand ready to inflict the very same injustices in your own country.

Ok ewent, I agree with your right to support your presidential choice. That is about where my agreement with you stops. Someone else being disrespectful does not justify anything you say, or give you license to unleash some of the vicious and outrageous lines you are spouting (e.g. mass castration).
Clean up your act and then support your choice. Your current attacks only demonstrate beyond any doubt that the left is just as mean spirited as the right. Two wrongs do not make a right (or maybe in the context of political speech a better word would be correct).
Please consider that some of those people on the other side are your relatives, school classmates, friends and neighbors. They are entitled to their opinions as much as you are entitled to yours. And that applies to all of us, not just to the other side. Plus none of us should be vicious as we advocate our views. And since we are a democracy, we should accept none of us is going to get our way completely. We need to respect and encompass those other views as much as we can into the solutions we advocate (no one promised living in a democracy was gong to be easy). Now try living up to the concepts in this paragraph ewent and you might get some respect from me. Currently you have earned none.

Are you kidding me gorgse?!? Pres. Obama was not a prime supporter of the revolution in Egypt? First move of the democrats, deny, deny, deny. They outwardly and blatantly supported the revolution. Pres. Obama knew who would take power as soon as the revolution was over, he's not stupid.

But Obama didn’t support him and called for his head and got it and then openly encouraged ALL young men o the Middle East to rise and conquer their lands and establish their future for themselves and he would support them, and it lit the Middle East on fire allowing these Muslim brotherhoods to take over the Middle East. He even used the military in Libya to help them take over there from a dictator that had given in to ever demand US had made including giving up Nukes. But Obama helped Muslim brotherhood take over there too. Muslim brotherhood has always openly been against the USA and Israel and openly said they would attack Israel if they won in Egypt and would declare war on the US because of our support for Israel. Come on folks you all want to defend this idiot President you elected but at least be truthful about what he is doing. You’re as big of a coward as he is by not being honest about what he stands for. The election of an Islamist is the worst possible outcome of the "Arab Spring" in Egypt. I'll still hope for the best, but see little positive that will result from the election of a candidate from an organization whose goals include the establishment of a Muslim caliphate and whose goals almost certainly have nothing positive in mind for the Jewish State !!
This will be the beginning of the end of a democratic Egypt unless the military steps in and controls the Muslim Brotherhood.

The only thing moderate is this article by NBC suggesting the possibility of something moderate coming out of the Muslim Brotherhood whose motto is as follows :
" Allah is our objective. The Prophet is our leader. Qur'an is our law. Jihad is our way. Dying in the way of Allah is our highest hope."
Just cogitate on that motto and you will know what to expect and what you will get from the Brotherhood.
The only slaughter we have seen lately there has been done by the US in Iraq, by Israel in Palestine and Gaza, and by Assad in Syria.
Moslems and Islam are the enemy because they reject INTEREST. This takes away the biggest weapon rulers of this world (aka bankers) have against the oridnary people. Folks, you will all become slaves before you know it. Corporations don't care about you or your country. All they care is to push stock prices higher and get their CEO pay that is 300 times average employee pay in America. Many of you have lost your homes to foreclosure. Many more will. Are you aware that you are paying interest for money that banks create out of nothing when you borrow? Are you aware that it is financial slavery?

I doubt that will happen. American foreign policy has always been based on one of self-interest, as are all countries. Both economically and in retaining its position as a major world power. I did a simple internet search of U.S. oil imports and it took me to the "eia" website which is the U.S. Energy Information Administration website. A U.S. government website. It isn't lying...it isn't propaganda. It is fact. The data it presents states very clearly that as of September 2011 the top three countries that supply us with oil in order of quantities are Canada, Saudi Arabia, & Mexico. And we are importing from Canada nearly double the amount of oil that we import from Saudi Arabia.
Then the order of other oil importing countries to the U.S. are Venezuela, Nigeria, Columbia, and then Iraq. So from what I can see...of the oil the U.S. imports...the majority of it comes from the Americas (North, Central, & South), then from the Middle East, and finally from Africa.

Like how can the employers of Arizona illegals be put in jail if the President you are so loyal towards sues to stop the state from making those acts illegal? Politics aside, I hope the new government will be able to correct injustices, help the economy and the people. It was a desperate situation for most Egyptians before and corruption is rampant. By reading this article...I find it is always easier to point fingers than to correct situations at home.

While a lot of what thee radical Islamists say is based on an imagination gone wild, a good deal of it is based in truth. Israel continues to flount UN resolutions, build illegally on occupied Palestinian territory, cause all kinds of ill in that region, yet every US administration is required to affirm its undying support for Israel. Israel, in fact, provides a focal point for these radicals. The easiest ( and the hardest ) thing for the US to do to solve its middle east problems would be to treat Israel just like any other country, rather than a country that has been bestowed a special favor from God.
