Masked 'goons' kill at least 17 in attacks on churches in Kenya

Masked attackers killed at least 17 people on Sunday in gun and grenade attacks on churches in a Kenyan town used as a base for operations against al-Qaida-linked insurgents in Somalia.

At least 45 people were wounded in the simultaneous attacks on Garissa, in the north of the East African country which has suffered a series of blasts since sending troops into Somalia last October to crush Somalia's al Shabaab militants.

"We have 17 bodies at the mortuary so far," regional medical officer Abdikadir Sheikh told Reuters.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Police said they suspected the attacks could have been the work of al-Shabab sympathizers or bandits, but it was too early to say. Inside Somalia, al Shabaab declined comment.

"The goons were clad in balaclavas," regional deputy police chief Philip Ndolo told Reuters from Garissa.

He said a total of seven attackers hurled grenades inside the Catholic Church and the African Inland Church and then opened fire with guns. They struck the churches, which are two miles apart, at around 10.15 a.m. local time (03:15 a.m. ET).

Two policemen were among the dead.

They were the latest attacks on Christian worshippers in Kenya after two people were killed in grenade blasts in March and April.

But Sunday's coordinated attacks on churches resembled the tactics of Nigeria's Islamist militant group Boko Haram, which has killed hundreds of people on the other side of the continent.

Other blasts in Kenya have hit nightclubs and bus stations in the capital Nairobi, the coastal city of Mombasa and areas near the Somalia border.

Kenya's border region has been tense since it sent troops into Somalia to pursue al-Shabab Islamic militants, the BBC reported.

Although a majority of Kenyans are Christian, Garissa is more heavily Muslim.

The town of around 150,000, a market centre for the trade in camels, donkeys, goats and cattle, is largely populated by ethnic Somalis.

"You can imagine for such a small town how the police and medical services have been stretched trying to deal with this," the police's Ndolo said.

Garissa is about 60 miles from Kenya's Dadaab refugee camp, where gunmen kidnapped four aid workers and killed a driver on Friday before fleeing towards the border with Somalia.

Last Sunday, three people were killed in a grenade attack at a night club in the port city of Mombasa, a day after the U.S. Embassy in Kenya warned of an imminent attack on the city.

Masked 'goons'

is that the new "politically correct" term for Jihadists or Islamic fundamentalists, practicing the fundamental principles of Islam. Struggling in the way of 'allah'

remember, none has the the right to be worshiped, other than allah.

“La ilaha ilia Allah, Muhammad rasul Allah”

There is no god but allah and Mohammad is the messenger of allah. It is recorded in text, and one version can be found here

The Book of Faith (Kitab Al-Iman)

Muslim :: Book 1 : Hadith 33

It has been narrated on the authority of Abdullah b. 'Umar that the Messenger of Allah said: I have been commanded to fight against people till they testify that there is no god but Allah, that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, and they establish prayer, and pay Zakat and if they do it, their blood and property are guaranteed protection

"and pay Zakat and if they do it, their blood and property are guaranteed protection"

Sounds just like an extortion racket, or criminal enterprise, falling under the conspiracy statutes dealing with organised crime.

on my behalf except when justified by law, and their affairs rest with Allah

So,

The first post calls for a new crusades, the second post supports the first, the third post equates Islam with organized crime...I'll bet all three posters consider themselves Christian or some variant of that religion.

Violence is a SIN, but violence in the name of God is Holy? That's so hypocritical that it cannot be reconciled outside the framework of blind faith.

Blind faith...both words are key, anyone "truly" faithful must be so dedicated as to be blind to any evidence that supports the idea that their faith is a tool, constructed by men. Men hungry for power, anxious for control over others, eager for money and all other worldly treasures the faithful will deliver if they can only be indoctrinated thoroughly enough, at a young enough age.

I am sick of the fantasies! People use religion as an excuse to repress, kill, destroy. In my view, religion is the antithesis of freedom, for those afflicted are truly saddled, corralled, tamed and trained by their religious leaders. Just as any other tamed creature, they are tools, used to do their masters bidding. Looking around the world today, I have a hard time believing that religious zealots are anything more than the tools of darkness and evil!

Sunday school or its equivalent, introduces children to religion. The stories related are all about goodness and miracles. When the child is old enough, they begin to attend "adult" church, where the story changes from goodness and miracles to fire and brimstone, to heaven and hell, to all manner of sin and sickness...We teach the world horrible ideas and support terribly sick practices in the name of a deity that is supposed to "love" everybody???

That is as evil as it gets!!!

What is MSNBC trying to be so politically correct for ? The headline of this article should have read:

It looks like yet another group of "peace loving" fundamentalist believers have shown us their version of faith's superiority to all others by deliberately targeting and KILLING INNOCENT PEOPLE, something that is ALWAYS WRONG, whether it's Islamist nuts killing Christians or their fellow Muslims in the name of Jihad or a Christian nut killing health care providers or other innocents because he (or she if it ever comes to that) is "pro life"!!

What's even more troubling than reading about an ISLAMIST attack on Christian worshipers is reading an article about an ISLAMIST attack on Christian worshipers that GOES THE SECOND MILE to avoid implicating RADICAL ISLAM in MASS MURDER, something I highly doubt would be the case if it were an article about the "Christians" previously mentioned !!!

I think it's ironic how the Christian belief system advocates that its adherents "turn the other cheek." I wonder, though, that in the face of this Islamic system that advocates the opposite-- that is, to actively and brutally "convert" people to their faith through violence-- if Jesus would have tempered that command. Should the Christians simply tolerate this? Turn the other cheek and let these radical Islamists (also currently destroying ancient world-heritage-certified mausoleums in Timbuktu) murder and kill them in the name of their faith? When there are no cheeks left to turn, what then? I imagine Jesus would probably state something to the effect that "this is the will of my father, and those who suffer persecution in this life shall live forever in paradise at my side." I mean, this was the guy who willingly let himself be crucified rather than bring rebellion against Caesar. Still, in the long run of things, if Islamic radicals are actively stamping out any competing religions, is the message of Christianity (overwhelmingly positive, despite historical and present contradictions by church leaders) doomed to be silenced by a religion more barbaric and forceful in its dealings with non-believers? Behold! The splendour of Islam, the religion of peace. Convert now or die at our hands.

Yes, all retribution and justice is God's alone. God has given us the ability to make agreements and fulfill commitments. Through that we agree to have a state that can issue rulings of justice. That's as good as it gets, Folks. You don't get to exact revenge for every slight and decide who gets to live or die without paying a karmic price for it. We have this idea that if one of us loses our life, it is the most horrendous thing ever, yet we take the other lives God has created without any remorse or thought all the time. Sounds to me like humans are a bunch of selfish, whiney babies.....Be grateful for life while you have it, respect and honor the other things/lives God has created......Love each other......how hard is that? Or, if you must, live to drink the blood of your enemies.....just stay away from me, please, 'cause that's downright moronic......

Hah... Like any of you armchair generals would have anything on the line if we actually went to another war. First, this was not an attack by muslims. It was an attack by a radical fundementalist group who happens to be muslim. It's the calling the Arayan Christian Militia as being represenetative of all Christians. As a Christian, they type who prayers daily and as an ex-soldier with family in the active military, I have a lot more to on the line here than you guys. I wonder did any of you even go to church this morning? Don't make war in the name of God. It makes you no different than these murderers.

armchair general? Sorry, last time I checked, I was a dual service (U.S. Navy, U.S. Army) combat veteran. How exactly does calling B.S. on the nonsense of giving a pass to Radical Islam in Islamist Attacks on Christian worshipers make me an armchair general ??

Radical Islam has been at war with Western civilization for at least two generations and that's in the modern era. Radical Islam has also been killing scores of Americans for nearly two generations since they blew TWA Flight 841 out of the sky September 8th, 1974, killing all 88 people on board. Intentionally ignoring the Islamist menace doesn't make it go away.

2BCT 1AD OIF 08-09 (I was also part of a sliver of OIF 05-06 but rarely list it anymore since 08-09 was my "full pull") and many of the soldiers I trained and served with are either currently in harm's way or will be if the $h*t hits the fan.

I guess their envy of being able to kill people who disagree with them out weighs that. There is nothing a Liberal would like more than to be able silence anyone with the audacity to not think the way they do.

Nowhere in the Koran does it say that. Infact as muslims we are taught "Lakum Dinukum Waliyadin" - Direct translation being 'for you, your religion, for me my religion'. We are taught to respect other religions which most muslims will do. Just because we have a handful of physocpaths out there who act for selfish gains and use religion as an excuse doesnt mean all muslims are extremists!!

What a wonderful thought, unfortunately, Mohammad in his vast wisdom abrogated that verse. That verse came while Mohammad was in Mecca, and was without political power and the needed devotees to enforce his will. Verses 9;5 (verse of the sword) or 9;36 are the abrogating verse, depending on the school of Sunni Jurisprudence used.

(Unto you your religion) of disbelief and ascribing partners to Allah, (and unto me my religion) Islam and faith in Allah. The verses of fighting then abrogated this and the Prophet (pbuh) did fight them '

Kenyan Islamist attack Christians..... Viners attack Christians with words... You got to love the moral equivalency argument. "Christians" killed Abortion Dr.s..... which is still crazy, a crime and (more importantly) denounced by the great majority of Christians...... but since They did it,,(about six in America by my count) Then it is OK for Christians to be PERSECUTED by the thousands..TODAY.

And all of you GOOGLE historians out there... here is a lesson: If it wasn't for the Crusades... Most of what we know as Europe would be speaking Arabic as a national language.. I don't approve of the "premise" of the war.. but it did change history in a good way. Christians send missionaries to the the most depraved, poor, destitute countries in the world. They are the ones who have, today, food and clothing closets around this and other countries.... Can ANY OF YOU name ONE organization of Islamist origin that has a outreach to others than their own?... Red Crescent come to mind... oh but they PRIMARILY help Their own. There is no comparison to the atrocities that are being committed on peaceful, Christians Churches AS WELL as the Systematic genocide the Islamist are committing against anyone who does not agree with them.

According to sources in Kenya- Garissa is only 10 miles from the world's biggest refugee camp Dadaab-most of the refugees are Somalis. The Kenyans who were attending High Mass in 2 churches- when hand grenades were tossed inside and when they rushed outside they were brutally gunned down. Brutally indeed. Last Friday al-Shabab accosted an aid org. lorry convoy and killed 3 Kenyans on the spot while kidnapping 5 aid workers -one of whom is a Norwegian. Kenya/Somalia border is 13 miles from Garissa. I believe in the holy trinity of paganism, reality, logic and reason.

Thousands of years ago, we "pagan" (Skeptic, Cynic school of philosophy ) saw that the auguries, reading the entrails of animals knew nothing more than those not looking at the entrails or internal organs of slaughtered sheep, goats,or Pigeons.

They noticed than it did not matter what was slaughtered, a Bull, a cow, or a @!$%#ing lizard, no "GODS' favor was granted them. So for over three thousand years, my sect of paganism has rejected any and all dogma. Religious, or now the prevalent "leftist progressive dogma" in a "secular" society.

If your definition of "good" includes anything religious, then yes, I hate it. Religion, all religion, is evil.

I'm a 41-year old veteran who has seen enough religion-on-religion violence in my four tours to fulfill both my life and your naive life.

But! Don't take my word, Linda. If you're so enthusiastic about the cause, I recommend you walk-the-walk by putting on a uniform, picking up a weapon, and doing something about it. It's easy for your fair-weather-patriot butt to sit behind your air-conditioned computer and spout your bilge. Stand up for your "good" principles: get over to Kenya and show 'em who's God is right!

          Good luck!

          @Captain Jack Wigal:
You are the pot calling the kettle black. Yes, you may wear the uniform, but you too sit behind an air conditioned computer and spout your bilge.

What? You didn't want everyone to know about your love letter where you took the liberty to put who you really are out in the open? Sorry, Capt Brannon, as a budget officer I strongly doubt you go outside the wire very much if ever at all. The worse you would get is carpal tunnel syndrome from working those MS Excel spreadsheets. I don't believe they give out purple hearts for that.

This is a love letter from Captain Jack Wigal to Savannah Guthrie on her promotion:
          Dear Savannah,

Congratulations on your promotion at the Today Show! I have been a huge fan of yours for a long time.

I'm currently the Budget Officer for the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade. We are deploying to Afghanistan soon. On August 3rd we are having a brigade informal dinner and dance. I would be honored if you would be my guest. We can dance, eat, and then go for a drive in my '70 GTO convertible where I will show you the stars in the Kentucky sky. Please say yes.

          Affectionately,

Here is a little more about the 'character' of Captain Jack Wigal aka, Capt Greg Brannon:

Well, I don't know about any of that crap, but I serve because I am poor. I can't get a job anywhere else that will pay me what I'm making now. I got no woman, no kids, no land. I got a nice car and a couple of cats and enough money to pay my bills. I'm paying off my student loans. I'm hoarding leave and cash for when I get out in a few more years and attempt medical school or nursing school or I just get my Master's Degree. I don't believe in God. My parents divorced when I was one and my mother abandoned us when I was 12; so none of that 25-year anniversary crap for me. My goal is to have enough money to someday buy my Grand-parent's farm that was sold out from under us, maybe find a woman I can trust, and have a child or two. I'd like to teach high school biology or history or chemistry and coach my high school cross country and track teams.

That's it. That's all. Just a low-life with a simple dream. I'm 41-years old. I've been in all three branches of the Defense Department. No grandiose desire to serve my country or its "noble" citizenry. No idealism except a hatred of organized religion which seems to be at the heart of all these wars. The military is a welfare program for me, because in my interservice periods, I often find myself on the streets under a bridge somewherer. The military is the most socialistic organization in our society, yet many espouse fighting for capitalism, which I don't get. The same people who berated the Affordable Care Act today are the same people who stand to benefit the most from it; which I don't get.

Anyway, rant over. Fourth deployment coming up in six weeks. I just don't give a crap anymore. I wish I had been that Battalion Commander and somebody stepped up and put me out of my misery.

HIS WORDS...NOT MINE...AMAZING WORK OF ART YOU ARE, GREG BRANNON...

I don't think that peace anywhere else but in the US is worth more than the lives of American servicemen. However, there are ways that we should be able to support Christians abroad to defend themselves. For example, it should be legal for individual citizens to finance the purchase of weapons and training for these besieged communities. Additionally, that we provide financial aid to all these regimes that oppress and murder Christians is simply revolting. That should end.

What do you think your weekly church offering goes toward? You didn't really think all that money went to support church operations, did you? U.S. churches don't pay income tax, no property tax; maybe some utilities for the one or two days a week the building is lit and air conditioned. The rest goes toward supporting christian terrorists in Africa and South America.

Guess you never heard of Rwanda in 1994, eh?

          How naive.

Captain Jack - medical units and hospitals around the world; clean water wells; food programs in famine areas; outreach to homeless; schools on Native American reservations; rescue operations for teen runaways and children in sexual slavery; Medical supply flights into remote ares; domestic violence shelters; food pantries; etc. These are some of the many ways members of church communities reach out to people around the world.

Without question, there have been cases of wrong doing and wrong priorities and those should be called out as the wrong they are. However, to ignore the good done is patently biased, false and misleading.

None of your argument justifies the attack on people in this Kenya church. Islamic extremists attacked a people attending a Catholic church service in an area that has opposed the local al-Qaida-linked insurgents in Somalia.

I am sick to death of reading this crap every day. Churches attacked, schools attacked, innocent children murdered in cold blood. Who are these cowards and why would they think God is on their side? If you believe in God, you know there is only One. It does not matter what name you call Him/Her. Bombing a house of worship is bombing God's house. It does not matter if it is a Temple, Church, Mosque, or a Synagogue.Time to take out Kaaba. One drone should accomplish this nicely. To all the good muslims, if you are not part of the solution, you are absolutely part of the problem. Get off your knees and do something, or we will do it for you. These acts of senseless violence may be just what the rest of the free world needs to bring us all together. This "virus" known as islam was obviously started with tribesmen infected by coming into contact with muhammed's feces. The infection has already spread to the USA. Check out this video taken at the Dearborn, Michigan Arab International Festival.

Glad to read your enthusiasm, Seven-341804. Can we presume this means you are going to quit your job, join the military, put on a uniform, and pick up a weapon to join the good fight?

Naaah. You'll just leave the hard fighting to the poor kids, right?

You provide the same support and conviction as a chinese-made "Support Our Troops" yellow-ribbon sticker on the back of your gas-guzzling V-8.

I already served my country in the 101st Airborne (Screaming Eagles) in Viet Nam 66 and 67. My brother did too. We also did not get drafted. My father was an Army Colonel who fought in WW2 and Korea. After he retired he was an adviser to the Pentagon. This is all from one family. If they would take me at my age I would gladly serve my country again. I am also a Native American. Cheyenne. BTW, Seven is my real name. And you?

You have done more than my whole family?Have you served your country more than 40 years? I really doubt you are a Captain, please know that Captain Crunch is a cereal not an actual rank in the military. Someone who is actually in the military would have more respect for his compatriots and brothers-in-arms. BTW, how's that cancer cure coming?

And how much money is the US sending to Kenya in aid. All of which is going into the pockets of their government leaders and none to the people it's intended for. It's who ever gives them the most money is who they support while paying lip service to the other countries who send aid. And just as a note, where is the UN about these attacks. They seem to be real quiet when it's a third world country attacking their own people.

LOL The Crusades have been going on for years especially in this region how do you think Al Shabaab was created it was to defend against a U.S backed Ethiopian invasion of Somalia which the Ethiopian Christians Slaughtered and raped many Muslims in Mosque also. I am not supporting any group that kills innocent people but it happens on both sides but you never hear about the horrible things that happen to Muslims in Somalia by these invading forces and if you do hear something they blame it on Al Shabaab (I do not support Al-Shabaab just stating facts) even though it was really done by they African union forces.
