From the front line in what looks ever more like a fight for Syria's capital Damascus, members of the Free Syrian Army appear to be closing in on President Assad's stronghold, at a terrible cost to both sides. NBC's Bill Neely reports.
As International Editor at NBC News' British partner ITV News, Bill Neely has covered the Libyan and Egyptian revolutions, the 2008 terrorist attack in Mumbai, as well as the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He is on his fourth trip in seven months to Syria, a country largely off-limits to Western journalists, where he and his team are covering the war. He spoke to msnbc.com's F. Brinley Bruton from Syria where he was witnesssing what he called "the battle for Damascus."
Q: Are you surprised by the level of violence you've seen on this trip?
A: Every day there are surprising things to be seen. On my last trip I was genuinely surprised by the level of destruction in the Baba Amr district of Homs where Marie Colvin (an American correspondent for Britain's Sunday Times) was killed. I think this time it has been really surprising to see three, four miles from the center of Damascus such sustained bombardment. Nobody in Damascus can be unaware of what's happening.
I was surprised to see (the Free Syrian Army) operate quite openly. I mean, on Monday they drove us around for a long time through suburbs of Damascus. There wasn't a sign in sight of any army presence and they weren't hiding themselves, they were driving around with the guns out the window.

A wounded man is lifted after shelling by Syrian government forces in Qusayr, close to the restive city of Homs, on Tuesday.
A few days ago (I was surprised by) the level of artillery and mortar fire going into Douma. It still has the capacity to shock you that an army will use that level of force to subdue a rebellion.
Q: How do you compare this to other conflicts you have covered in the past?
A: My immediate point of comparison would be [Libyan leader Moammar] Gadhafi [shelling] of the town of Zawiya which was 30 miles from Tripoli. Again there was a staggering level of force used in the bombardment.
In Kosovo it was very clear that it was ethnic cleansing, that Orthodox Christian Serbs were ethnically cleansing Muslims, as they had done in Bosnia. It is different here. The suburbs I was in yesterday are Sunni and the regime is not Sunni, it's Alawite, a branch of Shiite Islam, so there is a sectarian element to it. I think the Kosovo thing was even more, well, brutal.
Q: Have we reached a tipping point in the conflict?
A: My view was was that this was a civil war several months ago, and I think if there were any doubt [Syrian President Bashar] Assad answered that question a few days ago when he said this is a war on all fronts.
Homs and other Syrian suburbs continue to be relentlessly shelled. Meanwhile, rebel fighters targeted the main court building in the capital. NBC's Bill Neely reports.
We don't like to call it a war in the West because we don't have a damn clue what to do about it. At the minute it seems to me it is in the interest of the great powers to almost play this down.

A destroyed Syrian forces tank stands in street in Atareb in the province of Aleppo on Monday. Most of Atareb's residents fled the town due to heavy fighting between Syrian forces and rebels.
One interesting aspect of this is that the U.N. has now stopped giving casualty figures, it has kind of been stuck for quite a long time at around 10,000. Well, it is way way over that.
More about ITV News' Bill Neely
Activists appear to have some grounding in fact and are coming up with about 18,600 civilians and rebels killed. The deputy foreign minister told me in May that there were more than 6,000 pro-regime dead. That takes you straight away to 25,000. Hillary Clinton said a few days ago it was 700 in the past week. I just looked at the activists figures and it looks about 100 a day now.
This is now the longest of the Arab revolutions by a long way, it is bigger than Libya, Egypt and Tunisia put together.
Syria's pro-government television station has been attacked. Seven people were killed. It is one of the boldest attacks yet on a symbol of that regime as rebel forces step up the fighting around the capital Damascus. ITV's Bill Neely reports.
And the U.N. keeps warning that if we're not careful this will become a catastrophe. I think if it's 100 a day -- you are talking war, you are talking catastrophe.
Photos: A glimpse at the escalating conflict in Syria
And you can talk about talks between the opposition and Assad and a transitional government by mutual consent, and frankly it sounds to the people here on both sides like so much "blah blah blah." In fact, it probably sounds like "blab blah blah" to the citizens of the U.S. and Britain and France as well. But it is it is a [Band-Aid] by embarrassed governments while in reality on the ground there are two sides who are gunning for each other quite literally.
Q: What can the West do?
A: I just came from the U.N. in Damascus and there are dozens of white U.N. Land Rovers lined up there. They are all dressed up with nowhere to go.
It does give a very bad impression of a world that is completely impotent, and secondly of a world that isn't even trying because the U.N. are just sitting in their hotel doing nothing.
UN suspends Syria monitoring due to rising violence
Q: What did you think of the recent Human Rights Watch report on widespread torture in Syria, were you surprised?
A bomb targeting Syria's highest court has exploded in Damascus. NBC's Bill Neely reports.
A: There was a large element of "duh!" when that report came out. You just thought, "Well, what do you expect, this has been a brutal regime for a very long time."
Yes, it's terrible but I don’t think it told us anything new. Obviously, Human Rights Watch are trying to get the U.N. to refer Syria to the [International Criminal Court], they're building the evidence up block by block.
Rights group: Syria's 20 torture methods
Q: Is the risk that Syria could implode?
A: The distinction is that Libya imploded, and the problem with Syria is that it could explode. Someone once said the Middle East is like a series of detonators all strung together. When Syria goes off Lebanon will, Iraq might, Iran, Syria's closest, friend might. And Israel may get tempted.

A handout image released by the opposition's Shaam News Network shows an anti-regime demonstrator holding a banner during a protest in Kfar Sousa on July 2. The Syrian Revolution General Commission (SRGC) pulled out of an opposition conference in Cairo, citing political "disputes," a statement said on July 3.
Q: So you don't see much sign of the Assad government losing?
A: Not much sign of them stopping the bombardment of Homs and Douma because, if that’s what they feel they have to do to crush the revolution than that’s what they’ll do. They’ve made that absolutely clear. You read the official Syrian news agency and the word "crush" appears many many times.

Assad is another brutal dictator drunk with years of ego driven power and has no regard for human life. He will end up hanging from a bridge burned alive along with his family. No amnesty or asylum for this monster........
It really is amazing how Democrats, Republicans and the press refuse to call 10,000+ people dead from fighting a war.....
Impotent is a good way to describe Republicans and Democrats these days. The joke is that they want to tell you to vote for the less impotent one.
And Russia and China? Even better. They love when kids get killed by being hacked to pieces. Because they still won't do anything about it. Shows you as bad as it is in the US, what's it like being a kid in Russia and China and not having connections?
The press wouldn't even call this a civil war and for the most part, won't. I only give credit to the reporters risking their lives in the field, who are bringing this story despite everyone's desire to ignore children being hacked to pieces.
Part of me wonders if the refusal to call it a civil war is because calling it a civil war makes it harder to justify selling weapons and potentially getting involved and shooting off a bunch of weapons. While on the other hand...painting a picture of a Syrian government killing a bunch of civilians for no reason whatsoever, makes people want to stand up and demand that we get involved. But I admittedly don't know much about what is going on over there, so who knows.
It's not really Assad, Mubarak or Ghadafi. They have been puppets propped up by an entire small army of wealthy and powerful individuals who hide behind the facade, yet will stop at nothing to maintain their fortunate positions of internal power and influence. Such desperately need the dictator to remain in power and will back him to the death. Clearly there also winds up being second and third tiers right below or behind those closer to the dictator who also don't want their lifestyles, sense of security and insider perks to disappear. Any thought on the matter reveals this is so. There's no way just the dictator, his immediate royal family and a relative handful of loyal cohorts could sustain and win in these circumstances. This is the glue that enables the dictator to do what he does successfully. And so he intentionally has certain elements of the population in his pocket and control, if such want to keep their cushy way of life.
assad is a coward! Period! He is NO leader. Run, run really fast. No regard for life will be met with no regard for you! Those behind the mask will also be identified and dealt with. I believe in Divine Justice.
Hello Jimmy TwoTimes, you pretty much got it.
In the past year, Syria has seen a massive infusion of arms and terrorists from outside its borders. The U.S. has admitted to supplying arms and mercenaries (advisors). At the same time, the U.S. has attempted to manipulate world public opinion and exploit the chaos it unleashed in Syria.
Washington’s goal is to build up an international consensus to carry out a larger military operation against the Assad government under the cover of a “humanitarian intervention.” So far, that consensus has been lacking because the case for a military solution is based on total lies and U.S.-Israeli war propaganda, much of which has been repudiated by evidence gathered by independent journalists and eye witnesses on the ground in Syria.
Jimmy this has been pre-planned for a while, Syria has been on the list for a long time and now their time has come up. Do you really want another unnecessary war? Do you want your children fighting for another corporate war? I keep adding General Clark’s admonition of America’s plan to take over the Middle East because it is playing itself out right in front of the world! This isn’t a necessary war!
General Wesley Clark: "America will take out 7 countries in 5 years"
According to Former NATO supreme allied commander, former presidential candidate and 4 star US General Wesley Clark that they had received a memo that America is going to take out 7 countries in the Middle East starting with Iraq, Libya, Syria Lebanon Sudan, Somalia, and finally Iran. It is amazing that even if it is taking longer than originally planned, how these things that were planned years ago are being achieved in front of our eyes.
Haven’t we spread enough blood shed and death around the world? This isn’t a necessary war!
It is truly Amazing
Assad has no choices left except to kill or to be killed. For one there have been way way too many two double digit thousands and thousands of killed by the Assad's. Revenge or forgiveness is the right of those families in Al-Shams. Assad and his thugs can start counting their numbered days. His signature mustache is copy cat of Hitler's. Allah Akbar *3.
Well, we mostly hear that assad is killing civilians. Men riding around with guns sticking out windows does not sound civilian to me. Who is lying, assad or the liberal media?
Pretty much the deal here is that Syria is an ally to Russia and China. Stepping in to go against Assad complicates matters for anyone who sides with the opposition. So it is politics that are getting in the way.
Also ask yourself why is it everytime something goes wrong somewhere in the world the US has to be the ones to fix things, we have to send OUR troops to die, spend OUR money that we dont have, and when everything is said and done the rest of the world will say that everything is OUR fault.
This is a matter for Russia and China to solve, they are Syria's ally.
now they got weapon, they are defending them selves and their family's, and Army's bachar still firing on the civilian with heavy weapon "Hawn, tanks and Helicopters .." , just go to youtube you'll find who's lying, it's Bachar
Hm, what's your point?
Look at America, we have enough of our own problems. Leave Syria to the Syriens.
Next!
Hey Folks ..... Its a "Revolt" ... Civil War ..... "Revolution" .... and most conflicts of this nature aren't pretty, and are brutal & violent ... that's the nature of this type of conflict ... and people & nations choose sides for various reasons ( mostly Ideological, or financial) and have to stick their nose into it........... and pay for it later .... if their "favorite" doesn't prevail ...
This is a Syrian problem ..... there is no question that Assad is a brutal dictator, hated by large segment of his society ... BUT his party was also a compromise, to hold the various competing religious & minority interest of Syria, together. Assad also has widespread support among large segments of the population.
Whether you believe the Hegelian philosophy of "thesis, antithesis, synthesis " to be a misrepresentation of his thoughts .... one only needs to look at the revolutions of the middle east over the past few years to see viability of the premiss that he premise represents ..
In each of the cases of revolutions of the middle east, the "Thesis" (those in power) is confronted by the "Antithesis" (those demanding change) ultimately to have violent confrontation, (someone has to prevail) shaping the "Synthesis" that becomes the new "Thesis" .... to eventually be confronted by a new "Antithesis" .... and on and on. It has been going on since the beginning of time & will go on for ever ...... The "Muslim Brotherhood" may currently be the new "Thesis" in Egypt, already a new "Antithesis" is rising ....
Revolution is not kind .... when conflicts escalate to this level of violence in Syria, there needs to be a winner for the process to evolve ... at this point no one can possibly know what ultimately in store for Syria and her people ... Things can be much worse than they are ....
they are right in calling it a war but for the wrong reasons, assad is fighting islamists trying to overthrow his government like they have done elsewhere. this is not assad randomly killing civilians, the islamists are hiding behind civilians and dressing like them attacking the government and civilians hoping there is enough bloodshed to get other nations to topple assad for them, like we did in libya. there is no civil war because there is no 'civilian vs civilian', its the government trying to repel an islamic invasion. anyone ever ask why islam is spreading through violence? it was born from violence and it will forever be violent.
we really have no authority to tell any country what they should be doing, we may not like it and we can even penalize them by refusing relations but its their country not ours. if we are not going to conquer these nations we attack then there is no point in attacking them, we should have done owned most the middle east and a few other places but we are far to weak as a society to allow our nation to conquer new lands, even though we had every right under war.
Swagganaut, excellent work with the hypocrisy. We have no authority to tell any country what they should be doing, and it's their country not ours, yet we should have owned most of the middle east and a few other places, but we are far too weak as a society to allow our nation to conquer new lands, even though we had every right under war.
Nontheless, the Arab countries should furnish weapons to the "rebels". This is an Arabic issue. Allow the Muslims to fight to the finish and leave the Jews and Christians alone. Muslims hate everyone, including themselves.
Compared to ME Muslim nations' standards, Assad is far a better leader than most of them.
Sunni Syrian rebels are supported by the Sunni Saudi invented most extremist and barbarians al-Qaida, MB and others. They have become so intolerant that they can't tolerate a ruler belonging to a different sect!!
If atrocities and barbarism on girls, children and women are the criteria, then the most despotic, autocratic and bigoted Sunni Saudi ruler with his 5000 princes and princesses, Kuwaiti, UAE and other Arab League Sunni rulers and their rich sheiks are the biggest culprits in the history.
In killing of opponents again, these people have established world records.
Many are just ignoring or forgetting the Saudi inspired Islamic radicalism and terrorism in Nigeria, Egypt and other places right now going on!
Barbaric and beastly bigoted Sunni Saudis and their Arab League outsourced their dirty work to Turkey and now they are trying to drag US, Britain and others for their dramas in Syria!
The head of the Saudi and their Arab League observers to Syria Sudanese Gen was responsible for the genocides of at least 300000 Christians in Darfur!
Syria, Iran just like Iraq are the levels to which Saudis, their oil companies and lobbyists play their part and beat records of double standards.
For a change, let us just keep away from their battles!
Let us worry about our problems at home.
Well said
You make it sound like Sunni Saudis are all there is of any significance. Few really understand Islam or it's true history, drawing false conclusions due to looking at only parts of the whole story. Islam is continually being drawn up to appear more influential and powerful than they ever have a prayer of being in practice. People think terrorism is the end all that has already entered their psyche, meaning the terrorists were already successful. "Be afraid, be very afraid!" Blah, blah, blah. Well I don't pay attention to or acknowledge empty threats of the extremist regimes and their feeble power to do anything. Why do so many insist on giving power to those who hardly warant it?
The truth is right here in the USA our leaders and power brokers rely on essentially the same tactics. They're just far more sophisticated and smooth with it to be recognizeable to the general population.
Jonathan-1982062
The problem is you are patially right.
Mohamar Khaddafi was a target for everybody. Very few liked him except for his fellow tribesmen. Assad is not a terrorist, but a reasonable multiculturalist, albeit an unapologetic dictator. The terror is carried out by his army, but Assad is suffering for it. There are a lot of good reasons to be friends of Assad, and there are also good reasons to mistrust the rebels, many are showing signs of being Islamicists.
The Saudis are paying the rebels and providing an underground source to acquire weapons. I have my doubts that the Saudi's are specifically targeting the Alawi's, but it is hard to know what is going on behind the Islamic veil of secrecy. The Wahabbi's have way too much underserved power. The Alawi are seen as collaborating with the Shia, but I am certain that is because they are both minority sects in an intollerant region that has never accepted 'herassy' (a Greek word for 'choice').
Meanwhile, the conflict is making some very strange bedfellows in an evolving proxy war. Russia and Iran are Atheist/Shia-Islamicist allies in thier support for Assad.
Perhaps the war in Syria is akin to the 30 years war in Germany where Germany became the battle ground for a series of proxy wars after the fragmenting of the 'Holy Roman Empire', which was neither holy, nor Roman, nor an empire.
If there is a factor or a nation in the region that is best suited to arbitrate a solution, I would choose Turkey. Secular choices will be the best way to mediate a fair end. Attaturk was one of the great leaders of the 20th century. The Turks should ask themselves "What would Attaturk do?". The Turks have the highest vested interest in ending the conflict.
Nobody enjoys seeing dead or dieing Syrians, but in our endless bid for political dominion, it is they who are the victims. But we must keep in mind, that it is the armed young men of Syria who are doing all the killing. It is only they who can truely stop it.
Charles: Let the Shiites and Sunnis kill each other.
It will be a breather. Otherwise, they will be making plans to kill us!
We will worry about remaining later.
If Saddam was alive, we would not have lost much.
To make monies, Saddam would have sold oil dirt cheap instead of Saudis who manipulated oil prices high!
Likes of Saddam see monies right in front unlike the bigoted and barbaric Saudis who manipulate oil prices and count windfalls!
No end in sight? Great, that's the criteria the government wants in order to get involved.
I'm also sure they'll find a way to blame their violence on the Western world.
Did you see the photo of the cute little sign one of them is holding up? They are blaming us because we have not intervened. You know what, they wanted a revoution, they got one. They can go fight it, no reason for us to keep on finishing what they started.
Elect romney, he's just itching for us to get involved with boots on the ground.
Every time we aid Islamic "rebels", we do nothing but help to create a base for anti-West Islamic fanatics. Any aid we give to this crew of terrorists in Syria will quickly be forgotten and the "death to America" chants will soon start, followed by the terror training camps.
It happened in Afghanistan (remember all the aid we poured in there in the '80s??)
It's happening in Libya and Egypt
It'll happen in Syria.
We support other dictators like the Saudis, Kuwaitis, etc. so why not score some points with the people who really matter in the Middle East, i.e. the strongmen. We need to back Assad.
Aiding the rebels and thereby allowing Syria to plunge into a religious and ethnically-based civil war would be a human rights disaster, to say nothing of the fascist theocracy that will surely rise from the ashes. Assad may be a dictator but he's nothing compared to what'll happen in the power vacuum created by his defeat. I'll bet even Israel would rather have Assad in power than risk having another Iran right on their doorstep.
Are you nuts...do you really want Uncle Sam to reach into your wallet and help any radical MUSLIM. Get real it's there problem noy ours and never should be
Though there's few who've woken up to the modern reality, but the fact is there's no such thing anymore as, "It's their problem not ours..." Americans seem to think they can have their cake and eat it too. Acknowledging a global economy and how everything influences everyone on earth eventually in ways no one wanted to acknowledge before. Clinging to American independence and sovereignty, when forgetting our mantra is the Great American Melting Pot. Either our ancestors or this generation are immigrants. 200 odd years alone establishes no such isolationist independence as true blue Americans, per-se. The only true bonna-fide Americans of ancient decent are native tribes. We already represent the entire world, though still in a relatively primitive manner. We The People is what will be worldwide anyway. But in the process current Americans will not like what must occur first. the effectual dissolving of our borders. Not in physical terms that can be abated with barracades and fences, but in unstopable economic terms that can't be avoided at any cost.
"Behold, I come as a thief." Indeed!
It is a civil war. It is not our business. We, the USA, should not get involved in it. No money, no guns, no troops.
Let them fight it out.
One more outdated and oversimplified conclusion. Do people really think that Assad remaining in power, Libya having been left alone, Egypt and Tunisia likewise means all would still be good? For how long? Do we think this is just one more Arab Spring instance in a long history of Middle Eastern conflict without any resolve- ever? The days of what has existed in the ME and everywhere on earth are swiftly and forever changing. Can't go back to what was intolerable for a long time anyway. What did we think caused these uprisings this time? So many want the comfort of clinging to old fears. Change may be an improvement, but the unknown stirs up resistance to change. It all couldn't go on indefinately. And it's naive to assume that Egypt, Libya and Syria should stay in some perpetual fairy tale image that doesn't really exist anyway. And the bottom line with any Islamic sect that comes into power to fill the void is such will fail miserably in reflection of Islam crumbling across the board in ways Muslims continue to refuse to acknowledge. As soon as any group tries to impose Sharia Law or other oppressive measure to conform to 7th century ideals it will all blow up in their face. Ironocally it's as though Arabs don't realize how far their young people and civilization at large have moved beyond traditional Muslim influence. These growing numbers of young Arabs see Islam differently than their parents and grandparents.
@ Steve Rhan - Much of what you are saying is correct but you seem to be forgetting one factor. I agree totally that " Ironocally it's as though Arabs don't realize how far their young people and civilization at large have moved beyond traditional Muslim influence. These growing numbers of young Arabs see Islam differently than their parents and grandparents," however you need to recognize that it's the parents, the old generation, which controlls the wealth. Even in that part of the world, he (she, they, it, whatever) who controls the wealth controls society. We are still a generation away from your vision. Have you already forgotten that Afganistan was under Sharia Law when the Taliban was in power?
I agree that someday in the future this will change, but not yet.
It's not that I'm forgetting anything. I never meant to imply this would all occur overnight or a mere 5 or 10 years of Arab Spring. Furthermore, those who hold established wealth there will quickly come to nothing of significance if that wealth can no longer be used at it was before. We keep liking to forget what wealth or money really represents. Value alone. Wealth is not value any longer if the model of what's valued by the populace changes. And Afghanistan was under Sharia Law for just how long? A mere blink of an eye in historical terms. So many really believe this is all some far off condition when it's much closer in time than is recognized.
Our lack of action really amounts support for Assad. It's his heavy-handedness that keeps us from being more active. I really hope that CIA, NSA, etc. is sliding him some intel through the back door. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Israel was doing the same. I'll be really angry if we start aiding the "rebels". They're nothing more than the Taliban, Ayatollahs, al-Qaeda, etc. under a different name.
If Assad falls, the people of Syria will soon come to regret it once "The Sword of Islam" comes to town.
The USA is actively sponsoring this conflict against the Syrian government by arming, financing, organizing and directing terrorist death squads that are attacking both government and civilian alike and blaming the Syrian government for it. These are not "activists," they are armed militants. This is in fact a Western organized covert war to attempt to overthrow the Syrian government, because it is the only foothold of both Russia and Iran in the Middle East, which is something that the USA and Israel in particular do not like.
Do you have even a single shred of proof of this?? Real proof....not some 4th-hand claims or unsubstantiated ravings by someone on the internet.
Little if any proof of such would be found as you suggest. To support the potential such is actually occuring consider subversive Blackwater and other private contractor militants the US Govt. employs often, yet doesn't like to admit it. Given what's happened since 9/11, I have little doubt the US is secretly engaged in activities that even Julian Assange cannot hope to reveal. Using private contracted militants allows the US Govt. to avoid disclosure through the system. The US has been known to act on this level and has a long history of such. Why would now be any different?
I suppose you folks would support the killing and maiming by occupy wallstreet! Same thing. Assad will be butchered along with everyone of his tribe if he gives in to the rebels. He would be like a christian in somalia. DEAD . He better fight to the end and tell the world to shove it.
Hey Jollyjoker...who cares...let them kill each other it's not our responsibility to be wasting money on any radical faction....Muslims after Muslims a darn good think...stay away USA
Only sometimes do people realize the biggest problem Islam faces that makes them far less effective or a threat than most believe. There are no true Muslims, per-se. There are only Sunnis, Shiites, Sufis and a list of offshoot sects of Islam that would all sooner destroy the others as look at them. They all regard each other as false or pseudo Muslims that are to be eliminated eventually, much like the subversive conflicts between Christian denominations who think the others are only wanna' be Christians. There's no united Umma as Muhammad stipulated. And the Islam of today Muhammad would disapprove of to no end. Islam as practiced today is feeble nonsense that comes to no effect. Most everyone outside Islam thinks the Quran is all about war and nothing else. Islam is the religion of the sword, period! Nothing could be furhter from the truth. Ah, but the truth is only what those itching ears want to hear, not the actual facts themselves. The true history of Islam and Muhammad has come out in recent years and traditional Christianity will stop at nothing to dis it again. But the truth is still the truth.
Jolly, the OWS has NOTHING to do with this. Why bring it up?
@Steve Rhan
You are a very ignorant person and have obviously never read the quran.
Muhammed came to power by killing pagens who openly accepted him and his people. He was a betrayer, a murderer, and a false prophet.
Unlike nearly all of the Old Testament verses of violence, the verses of violence in the Quran are mostly open-ended, meaning that they are not restrained by the historical context of the surrounding text. They are part of the eternal, unchanging word of Allah, and just as relevant or subjective as anything else in the Quran.
SO YES THEY ARE VIOLENT, YES THEIR BOOK CALLS FOR IT.
So yes the truth is the truth, and you wouldn't know it if it walked up and bit you.
Quran (2:191-193) - "And slay them wherever ye find them, and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out, for persecution [of Muslims] is worse than slaughter [of non-believers]... but if they desist, then lo! Allah is forgiving and merciful. And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is for Allah."
Quran (2:216) - "Fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not."
Quran (3:151) - "Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers, for that they joined companions with Allah, for which He had sent no authority".
Quran (4:89) - "They but wish that ye should reject Faith, as they do, and thus be on the same footing (as they): But take not friends from their ranks until they flee in the way of Allah (From what is forbidden). But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever ye find them; and (in any case) take no friends or helpers from their ranks."
Hey Americans. The fight is not in Syria its on your homeland which is being taken over by corporate monopolies or communists. Get ready to fight cause Agenda 21 is here on your soil.
Facts:
This is a civil war! which is also an all out war!
Hundreds of thousands died in a very bloody American civil war and no one stepped in and got involved, why because it was our business. Hence... We should not get involved in theirs.
Sooner or later, when they get sick of the carnage and stench, there will be a lot less Syrians left in the country. This will adversely effect the economy and the countries industries. Eventually a truce will be drawn and they will come to an agreement or surrender ON THEIR OWN, and probably much wiser because of the losses.
Let them fight it out... I am American and proud of it, but this time I have to agree with Russia.... Let them handle their own fight!
How would you like it if you had a fight with someone and someone else came in helped the other guy. There are always two sides to a coin even if both sides are dirty.
Oversimplification, again. One cannot really compare our Civil War of the 1800's with what's goin on in the ME today. We The People is unique to US, while the sort of Civil War in Syria is quite different with different motives. They don't have the concept of We The People as their foundation. So their's isn't really a Civil War between the populace. There are a relatively tiny number of elitist royalty and their loyal cohorts attached to a dictator fighting off a vast majority of oppressed commom folk who are sick of living in poverty for unwaranted reasons other that being exploited by a royal few.
Steve, we don't have the concept of We The People any longer and if Obama gets another 4 years we will see it even more. I love how we talk about others when this country is being ripped apart by a man who tramples on our constitution.
So, what you are saying is this conflict is more akin to the French Revolution? I concur. This is NOT a "civil war". This is a REVOLUTION. A revolt by the oppressed. Determined to cast off the shackles imposed by their oppressor(s). Why must the "kooks" always come up with some over-the-top delusional conspiracy theory to explain the extraordinary events that occur in our lifetime?
it is what it is..
a R E V O L U T I O N ! !
not a civil war
sam kinison said it all.MOVE OUT OF THE DESERT!
As long as there is more than one human being on this planet there will ALWAYS be war. In the entire history of man there has never been one single day of world wide peace ever recorded.
Not true. You have to understand why wars occur in the first place before you can make a statement like that. Eventually the reason or gain from armed conflict will come to a dysfunctional end.
"In the entire history of man there has never been one single day of world wide peace ever recorded".
You are entitled to your opinion, however, you cannot dispute my statement with any validity.
"We don't like to call it a war in the West because we don't have a damn clue what to do about it. At the minute it seems to me it is in the interest of the great powers to almost play this down."
The Governments of the world do know what is going to happen, it was recorded in the Bible thousands of years ago by the prophets. Damascus will be destroyed before Christ returns.
Isaiah 17:1-3 The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap. The cities of Aroer are forsaken: they shall be for flocks, which shall lie down, and none shall make them afraid. The fortress also shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Syria: they shall be as the glory of the children of Israel, saith the LORD of hosts.
What the world wants to believe ain't going to happen has begun. The Jews from around the world have been gathered out of the nations back to their Land(promised to Abraham). Russia and its allies will turn their focus on Israel.
Ezekiel 38:1-5 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,Son of man, set thy face against Gog(leader of the Russian people), the land
of Magog(southern Russia), the chief prince(ruler) of Meshech(Moscow) and Tubal(tobolsk), and prophesy against him,And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of
Meshech and Tubal: And I will turn thee back(tried to become a Democracy now back to Communism and hating Israel), and put hooks into thy jaws, and
I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them
clothed with all sorts of armour, even a
great company with bucklers and shields,
all of them handling swords:Persia(Iran), Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of
them with shield and helmet:
Christ will return quickly like a Thief in the night. A Thief only if your not watching what is happening in the world.

Gerard, your room temperature IQ, and intellectual ineptness are very apparent. Your comment only proves your ignorance. Ciao
Happy 4th of July!!!...Syria has a ways to go before they can celebrate their independence...it took us how many years before we could celebrate our independance....let em fight it out, if its stopped now, it'll only reappear later. You can recite all the gobbledygook you want from your bible, but it won't change a thing...
Nothing being done, well there is lots of profit for the arms manufacture. Check quarter profit statements and see what is really important to those in "power".
The Al-CIA-ADA, also operate freely in Syria, and the entire Middle-East pushing the Bankster-Run Libtard Scum- NWO- Muslim Brotherhood Agenda. We too, have become a Bankster Occupied Government, of the New World Order, and You will learn to love this Totalitarian-Authoritative NWO Shadow Government.... Don't worry Sheeple, Your Government has everything under CONTROL...... "I truly believe Banking Institutions to be more dangerous to Our Liberties, than Standing Armies" Thomas Jefferson... How soon we forget about our own Civil War.How many died and how long it went for. Leave these people alone ,they will settle this by themselves.
Ditto Trollnuc.... how soon we forget the very same atrocities... "women and children used as Human-Shields during Our Civil-War" the Hypocrites run amuck, and lack the knowledge of "American History"... and,The History of anything, roaming tirelessly in their moronic abyss..... Ciao
Wish someone with enough humility or balls would put some bullets in this Alawhite Shia Assad the killer who has killed in the thousands (mainly Sunnis). Assad the dumb ass that is in denial stating his relations with Shia tainted states has not changed but relations with rest of the world, especially Sunni Muslim states, has been completely altered. How many countries have any diplomatic relations left with the killer Assad regime.
Send troops and money like we always do. We are still sending Over a billion dollars to Iraq this year and buying oil from them. ARE WE NUTS????? We should quit paying taxes.
This is getting old. Yes, it is and has been a civil war which should be handled by the government and the opponents. With the Security Council at the UN having Russia as a voting member, who is friends with Bashar, there weil never be a resolution that the UN can act upon. So get used to it. Civil wars are deadly. Our's killed 650,000 Americans. Add to this the fact that neither the UN nor any other country knows who they want to back in this conflict since we all want to back someone who will be freindly to the US and ther aren't any such groups invoved. Yes "do gooders" it is bad but you can't do a damn thing about it so quit reminding us of the problem. The US needs to plan far enough ahead to know how to deal with whoever is the victor. The Islamic Brotherhook in Egypt isn't exactly what the US and rest of the world wanted in power but so much for democratic elections. Democracy in the middle east isn't going to work as we would like it to. It is the responsibilty of the government, any government, to hold the country together and they are going to fight to the death to achieve that. That's not counting that they are fighting for thier own lives and power. We did that in the Civil War and the Union held it together but not until we killed a lot of people. What is the difference between that and Sherman's march to the sea?
"Logistics Breach"
Through a series of selected exposures of prototypes, in a dependence environment,
military, or civilian, the threat of logistics breach is present. This gives
the manufacturer freedom to create, as they see fit. By selected exposure, the
illusion of security priority is accomplished.
Combined with an initiated threat, a private status of ones military designs
develop. Any mass commitment to this threat, results in mass design towards
initiative. Creating breach, and a pacification by design, against conventional
threats. Exhausted budgets, and neglect of proven tactics are the result of
mass commitment.
The need to create awareness, of the definitive, logistics breach is authentic.
A broader spectrum of over watch security should be determined periodically.
"9/11 THE INITIATED THREAT"
The origins of al-Qaeda as a network inspiring terrorism around the world and
training operatives can be traced to the "Soviet War in
Afghanistan" (December 1979 “
February 1989). The U.S. viewed the conflict in Afghanistan, as a blatant case
of Soviet expansionism and aggression. A CIA program called "Operation
Cyclone" channeled funds through Pakistan's "Inter-Services
Intelligence" agency to the Afghan Mujahideen who were fighting the Soviet
occupation.HOW-THE-CIA-CREATED-OSAMA-BIN-LADEN
From 1986, MAK began to set up a network of recruiting offices in the U.S., the hub
of which was the Al Kifah Refugee Center at the Farouq Mosque on Brooklyn's Atlantic
Avenue, New York USA. Among notable figures at the Brooklyn center were
"double agent" Ali
Mohamed, whom FBI special agent Jack Cloonan called "bin
Laden's first trainer,"[82]
and "Blind Sheikh" Omar Abdel-Rahman, a leading recruiter of mujahideen
for Afghanistan. Al-Qaeda evolved from MAK.
"THE STAGE"
This is the completion of a cycle--al-Qaeda first moved to Afghanistan in the 1990s
due to pressure in their Arab countries of origin. They moved on to Pakistan
after the fall of the Taliban. And now some are heading home to the Arab world again….British jihadis, who have been training for years at al-Qaeda strongholds in Yemen and Somalia, "are known to be
receiving training in the likes of Libya and Egypt" Al-Qaeda is now active in Syria, and
"warned against suggestions that al-Qaeda's threat has 'evaporated'
following the death of Osama bin Laden and significant victories in Pakistan.Particularly
since the winds of "spring" toppled Egypt's pro-Western Mubarak
regime--the presence of al-Qaeda and other global-jihad elements has been
rapidly growing at least in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.Still more significant, though, is the fact
that "permissive environments" where al-Qaeda is coming back to
roost--"Arab Spring" countries like Egypt, Libya, and Syria--are also
places where the Muslim Brotherhood has been gaining strength.
Wade,
The statement you made about,
The Islamic Brotherhood in Egypt isn't exactly what the US and rest of the world wanted in power but so much for democratic elections.
I believe our illustrious Prez was backing the Muslim Brotherhood in Libya and Egypt and that is what is in Syria now.
We talk about dictators and we have one sitting in the Oval Office just hoping for something to happen here so he can declare Marshall law and he will take total control.
Don't think for one minute should we start a revolution here that our government will not use military force on U.S. ALSO!
Not to agree with your assessment of Obama, but they did use riot squads to break up peaceful occupy demonstrations. No doubt whatsoever that some levels of government will use violence to control American citizens.
A$$ad has made an A$$ out of the whole world for not doing anything to save the people. That makes the other nations criminally liable also.
there is only one way to get obama out of office is too vote this fool out. fire all those in congress and the senate. start from fresh new beginning.. i think,i know i congress and senate have lost there way,too much time investigating worthless B.S! this country never apologized to any one before. time is for someone to take charge and get this country back on track. now,we know obama has the black vote. every American needs to register and vote this baboon out of office.
