Five people were shot dead after a gunman facing eviction seized hostages in an apartment in the southern German city of Karlsruhe on Wednesday, police said.
The dead were thought to be the shooter, apartment's current renter, a bailiff, a locksmith and the apartment's new renter, police spokesman Norbert Scharer told NBC News.
"Special forces broke into the apartment after smelling smoke and found five dead bodies. Probably one of them is the gunman," Scharer told NBC News.
A social worker, who also belonged to the visiting group, was released during the hostage taking.
"They all died of gunshot wounds,'' a police spokesman told Reuters.
After shots were heard, officers from the police special response unit, some dressed in protective green suits and helmets, sealed off the area around the building in the north part of the city.
Police said they found a hand-grenade and a rifle in the apartment.
Karlsruhe, with nearly 300,000 inhabitants, is located near the French border and is home to Germany's Constitutional Court.

No legal gun owner condones illegal firearms on the street you dufus, and they never have. For those here in the USA who advocate gun control. germany has a very strict gun law, and still they are gotten and used by criminals for violence. Guns do not kill people, the idiots who pull the trigger kill people. Or as my wife says, Guns do not kill, husbands coming home earlier then schedule do!
Your wifes saying is a good one on the joking side of it, but on the serious side, I think a man that would lose control and kill another man for screwing his wife is an idiot because he wouldn't be between her legs unless she wanted him there in the first place. At some point, the new renter must have been pleading to the bailiff that he really didn't like the apartment and wanted out of the lease. About the time the shooter capped him.

Lets just put it into perspective here. You commies have been at the gun grabbin game really hot and heavy now for the past 30-40 yrs with everything you can throw at it and you haven't done anything of significance YET except to spin your wheels and slide backwards down hill. Just since the 80's for example concealed carry states have grown from a half a dozen or so to 48 at present, exclude Ill. and DC. And that's not all. We now have a growing # of states adopting stand your ground laws to put criminals in their place, and there's much more than that. We are one helluva large powerful organized group, us LEGAL gun owners/NRA backers. Good luck in your endeavor because BY GOD you are gonna need it!

There should be no need to evict people. There is no excuse for a lack of housing, CHEAP housing.
I think basic housing and utilities should be a human right.
I think getting out, working and supporting yourself should be a basic human responsibility.
How do you know he was being evicted over rent? He could be evicted for being an obnoxious, self centered, lousy neighbor who was nothing more than a left wing blogger that irritated everyone else.
If you feel that is is such a right, why not go out, get some homeless people and let them board in your house. Of course you would need your Mom and Dad's permission first.

What's going on? You would expect to hear this type of tragedies happening in the US, but Germany? When did we start exporting tea partiers there and how come I didn't get the memo? I was stationed there for almost four years and the only fight I witnessed during all that time was one at the Octoberfest in Munich and one of the people involved, you guessed it, an American that broke a stein beer mug on a German's head and you wouldn't believe how the police acted, they behave like true professionals. I think the reporters should forget PR and report the races of the people involved. Something tells me that those involved were immigrants. Although my admiration for Germany makes me too partial to judge them impartially. The moment my friends told me I was being assigned to Germany, I tought I had won the lottery. What a people, what a nation, of course, my admiration for them doesn't cover the Nazis or neo-Nazis, nor tea partiers, although they are like two peas in a pod.
So why don't you go there? Ohhh, thats because they will not let people like you immigrate.
As the NRA would claim, this shows that gun control doesn't work, so we should toss out gun-control laws. Likewise, the frequent occurrence of murders shows that laws against murder don't work, so we should also dispose of those. After all, people intent on murder will find a way. And if it were not for that fact, especially in a criminally violence prone nation like the US where the criminals are protected up the ying yang with all sorts of RIGHTS, good decent law abiding folk wouldn't be able to peep out their windows, much less go outside. Criminals in this country are NOT afraid of the police, courts, or the penal system.
I'm afraid that a weak and infirm individual with a gun is still a weak and infirm individual. Guns cannot buy you courage or bravery, but can certainly empower bullies and criminals. When shooting starts in real life, people most often fall over themselves attempting to run away. In its "Armed Citizen" column, the NRA has been doing its best to find exceptions to this rule, but even those cherry-picked incidents often provide only weak support for their case.

If a criminal gets the drop on you like that, how is a gun going to help you? Sure, a movie hero might manage to pull his weapon and shoot the bad guy anyway. In real life, however, most likely you'd just crap your pants.

I would like to say to the anti NRA and anti gun nuts that as it has been said many times by many people that the criminals will always find a way to get weapons. Trying to ban guns will only prevent honest people from having them. I am a PROUD Life member of the NRA and the ISRA! I have several guns and so do my neighbors but there has yet to be any gun violence in our neighborhood. We all look out for each other because we are all respectable law abiding citizens that want to be able to keep the right to defend ourselves if need be. As tragic as this story is, I was glad to see it wasn't Chicago again. Chicago has the strictest gun laws in this state if not the entire country but they have shootings everyday. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm wonder why? Oh !!!!!!!!!!! the criminals have the guns and the law abiding citizens DON'T!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Laurel-- I live in Ramstein and drive to Karlsruhe and other places in Baden-Wuertemberg frequently. Hate to sayt this but the police is not as feared as you believe. In Konstanz a crowd emptying out of a Disco beat the Police up. The Neo-Facists are trying to make hay out of this at their "public gatherings." My daughter and I went shopping in Zweibruecken on a Saturday and there they were, the thugs dressed in stylish black and looking like soenthing recently enfranchised from the forrests, and the howled about the physical abuse the German Police was taking.
