In the 90's, we won the war against the Soviets and as soon as we had won, we packed up and left, leaving Pakistan's economy ruined, along with the largest refugee problem in the world, and Afghanistan in rubble. All throughout the war, we had told them we were their good friends, and as soon as we got what we wanted, we left. It eventually came back to bite us on the ass and we needed to get through Pakistan again.

This time though, they remembered what good friends we had been the last time. And they are in it for the money. Anyone who expects otherwise is nuts.

You know why it's so difficult to cut off aid to these foreign countries? Or, at least, make it dependent on them doing what is in our interests? It's because the 'aid' is in form of weapons. Our defense contractors have powerful lobbyists and they don't want their cash cows threatened.

So Egypt, for example, keeps receiving the 'aid', no matter what they do. Saudi Arabia is too rich to need aid, but they are a very powerful lobby simply by buying our weapons; so they export their fundamentalist Islam, pretty much with impunity.

In addition, the weapons are sold to dictatorships, and are often used to suppress the local population. The average Pakistani or Egyptian doesn't see the aid - what he does see is the gunship that the US gave to the dictator who is oppressing him. Let's see now. What this accomplishes is that it allows American weapons manufacturers to sell all sorts of weaponry to Afghanistan, thereby providing all kinds of armament to the Taliban.

I don't think there are too many sane people running around that don't believe the Taliban will move in and retake Afghanistan (well, perhaps a clueless Obama) just as soon as the U.S. departs. The end result will be virtually identical to what happened in Viet Nam which is when the U.S. was forced out, the entire inventory or ordinance we supplied to the South Vietnamese government became the property of North Vietnam. Forgetting history is a recipe for repeating it.

You can also be certain the Taliban will have some of this weaponry well before the official overthrow because Taliban elements of the Afghan army will give to them.

@Yank, maybe I can shed a little light here, Not quite sure what is involved at that level of logistics going into a country like we did in Afghanistan. They have it figured out what a force will need and have supplies all ready to go. They calculate a force size and send supplies for the estimated force size. plus the build up after. Those supplies you talk about are for the full Battle Plan. Since they decided to use less forces those supplies are still there. There is also a possibility that some of this stuff came from Iraq that what was not needed. The Military in their infinate wisdom possibly decided to create a Staging Area there. We have many Staging Area all around the globe.

So if your going to send in 90,000 troops you must send enough support for that many. If after your there you don't want as many troops the equipment gets stored for use later, who knows the plans can change the opposet way (more troops) and you need the supplies. You have them and don't have to pay return shipping. I was a unit Supply Sergeant and never worked on a project like an invasion but Supply Is Supply on all levels
