6 US soldiers killed in roadside bomb attack in eastern Afghanistan

Updated at 8:30 p.m. ET: KABUL, Afghanistan - Six U.S. soldiers were killed in a bomb attack in eastern Afghanistan on Sunday, officials confirmed to NBC News, on a day where a total of 29 people died from roadside bombs and insurgent attacks.

The identities soldiers were withheld pending notification of next of kin, NBC News chief Pentagon correspondent Jim Miklaszewski reported.

The deaths take the number of NATO troops killed in the last two days to eight, one of the deadliest periods of violence for foreign troops in weeks.

In addition to the six NATO deaths, bombs and attacks killed 16 Afghan civilians, five policemen and two members of the U.S.-led coalition in southern Afghanistan, Afghan and NATO authorities said Sunday.

The civilians, including women and children, were killed in three blasts in Arghistan district, along Afghanistan's border with Pakistan.

Kandahar province spokesman Ahmad Jawed Faisal said one bomb exploded when a minivan ran over it Sunday morning. A second went off when other civilians riding a tractor arrived to help the wounded. A third explosion occurred about two hours later when a civilian vehicle hit a roadside bomb in another area of the district, killing two women.

At least 10 civilians were injured in the three blasts.

More than ten years after the beginning of the war, Afghanistan faces external pressure to reform as well as ongoing internal conflicts.

On the same day, major donors in Tokyo pledged $16 billion in development aid for Afghanistan over the next four years as they try to prevent it from sliding back into chaos once most foreign troops have left by the end of 2014.

NBC News' Jim Miklaszewski, the Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

NATO is a Global Military Force that has been marching the globe bringing destruction and chaos anywhere it goes. Just look at Syria, Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan ect ect ect. It is not American, and I would advise not supporting it.

Yea and Obama is no different. Now he is back pedaling on bringing the troops home. He is looking at ways to leave a force there. We die over there and the Chinese get the mineral rights.

Oh yeah thanks again for allowing the Opium Production to increase. Look around the streets of America and you will see a huge spike in Overdoses of heroin due to those addicts who are use to the Mexican street tar heroin and now the Afghan Kush Heroin is here and its killing people. Look into the real reason for "Fast & Furious".

Good luck with that! These people have been fighting one another for THOUSANDS of years. What makes anyone think that they will ever stop? This "war against terrorism" is just a pause for them, plus they like it, they still get to keep fighting and killing and dying and breeding hatred into their children so they will do the same!

Time to pack up, leave, and then tell them to leave us alone or face nuclear annihilation!

This should not come as a surprise to anyone. Well, what did NATO expect (flower and olive branch, maybe?) after Friday's Obama's drone attack that killed 22 Pakistanis? Were they all terrorists? It could be anyone's guess! So many children and women are getting killed every week by these drone attacks. Pakistani intel ISI is informing anyone to CIA as terrorists (and raking in millions) whoever is opposed to Pakistani military and oppose current Pak administration.

There's a parallelism between NATO and US behavior in Afghanistan and Israeli behavior in the middle-east...

I think its time for NATO to call it quits and run as fast as they can. NATO has taken US side on this war and that does not bode well for people in that region of the world. They should rather play a neutral role and ease tensions among the warring parties...

Under new terminology 'enemy combatant' or 'terrorist sympathizer' is anyone in the vicinity of a drone attack. Also under the new terminology, NATO means Americans. If it is another nation's soldiers killed then the country is named, as in UK troops or Canandian troops.

The Taliban are no longer our enemies under the new guidelines, and terrorist attacks made on US troops on US soil by radicalized Muslims in the military are now "work place violence.'

The talebans like alquida, hamas, hezbollah are a vicious brainwashed mass murdering pyscho group.Thousands of people in New York died because of them. They will never get close to power again except in some villages The world was burnt once by the taleban regime in Afghanistan and has a red line for them. And that includes China,Russia,Europe the U.S Japan and really almost all the world. They know what that taleban regime did.. The talebans are dead ducks just wriggling around.Their chance of taking over the presidential place is zero..On this one the world has spoken.Ask Russia and China who support Syria. On this one there is no confusion.They.. like most of the world strongly shout "death to the talebans. No ambiguity no indecison. Both in Russian and Chinese the talebans are dead ducks!

It's simple to me. We main there more service members and innocent civilians die. We leave the killing stops. We have no business in their lives. For 11 years the government and defense contractors has used 9-11 to sell wars. If they want the wars let them send their children to fight.

Prior to the US invading Iraq there was no religious violence and no roadside bombs--they had electricity 24/7. Prior to the US invading Afghanistan the Afghans lived in relative peace. It's not relevant to us what god they follow or what laws they pass. Not out country.

My son's over there on his 3rd tour. It time they come home. He's tired, his wife and kids are tired, I'm tired, the American people are tired. This should have never started.

After 9/11, if we would have put the good will of the world to good use, al queda, the actual perpetrators, could have been stopped with a lot less money and far less innocent blood. Ah... but then the likes of Haliburton, KBR, Blackwater and a handful of others would not be as well off as they are now.

I certainly agree that Bush, Cheny, Rumsfeld (and others) deserve to be publicly disgraced for their misconduct of this war, but, we are not there to be liked. We came there to deny Al Qaeda its safe haven under the rule of the Taliban, and to find and kill as many of the people deemed responsible for the 9/11 attacks, most particularly, Osama bin Laden.

That has been accomplished to the greatest degree possible. Osama bin Laden is dead, his body consumed by the fish and plankton of the Indian Ocean. A "friendly" government has been established in Kabul, one which will not likely harbor our enemies, at least not openly.

That it. That is "End Game". We do need to leave, but not precipitously, and not totally. We should follow the established time table for departure, and, we need to maintain as much of a presence there as is practically possible. As we learned 11 years ago, ignorance is not bliss, and what happens in these obscure parts of the world can hurt us.

If Bush had been President it would have been the top story on GMA and they would have had a video to go along with it. They then would have had an anti-war activist on the program for their comment, blah, blah, blah.

This is a mid-evil culture thrown into the internet age with modern weapons.

You all can scream, cry, rant...it doesn't matter. But let's not blame our fellow Americans. Republican or Democrat.

We have a very, very transformative time at the moment. It will be ugly. But I do believe that information is key, and after a few decades (yup, that kind of sucks, doesn't it) most of the hate and ignorance (from both sides) will be swept under the carpet. Granted, we will always have those who want to kill and gain power, but in the information age, things will change. Look at it this way, anyone with a cell phone can communicate. Fifty years ago, that concept would be abstract. But these 'wars' have been going on for centuries. West v. East. There is a lot of history, sure. But it won't go on. As long as we don't elect a president who says something like "crusade."

You can't fix stupid, but fortunately, stupid won't be in charge much longer. Ten more years, maybe twenty. But this war has been going on since 500 A.D. I'm fine with twenty, if that's what it takes. Let's wrap it up.

This planet is FAR better than this.

During the 1990s Clinton used these same radical Muslims in Bosnia, while IGNORING the bombings of US Embassies and deaths of US service members. Also remember that the; funding, training, and placing the key terrorist in the USA for 911 occurred during Clinton's watch...

A woman executed for being raped while 150 men applaud and the west pledges 16 billion dollars. How about 16 billion dollars of daisycutters and no need to put in another dime or drop of NATO blood.

Even the reporting has become a joke!

"major donors in Tokyo pledged $16 billion in development aid for Afghanistan over the next four years as they try to prevent it from sliding back into chaos once most foreign troops have left by the end of 2014."

They are assuming that there is no chaos right now!

Reporters are talking of women and children injured. Are they reporting from Pakistan and Afghanistan or some where else?

Afghan President Ahmad Karzai has amassed a fortune of over $300 million since assuming office. The vast majority of it comes from the American taxpayer (via contract kick-backs) and drug money.

I would bet he is on the first plane out of the country (with his $millions) the moment we leave in 2014.

Oh people just wait a minute...Afganistan is now another of the USA's key non-NATO allies and it can now obtain training and equipment for its maintainence of the "peace". Not that anyone in Afgan... knows what peace is anymore. But being a key ally to the US gets Afgan... a direct deposit from our treasury...not a bad deal. We'll be shoveling $$$ over there for the rest of our lifetimes and our kids too probably. Meanwhile we fret that we can't afford our social programs any, more. Simple isn't it?

Flocker - Did we not do that for our so called enemy-friend Israel since 1948. US tax payers have shoved in on average $10 billion (in cash and WMD) a year for 64 years, ie, about $640 billion dollars and guess what we got - a lot of grief and we turned everyone in the middle-east into our enemies. O' wait, with a friend like Israel we don't need any other enemies...

flocker:The people who are poor are always under seige and every Administration in Afghanistan is going to be corrupt to a certain point until they have a populace that is more patriotic than religious/criminal (yes, those are two entirely different ways of being but they result in the same amount and same justification for the killing and oppression of the people, so I lump them) and that happens when an Administration is moderate and reliable to the people, which happens when the administration is supported by friends and benefactors in and out of the region. We are affected by the state of Afghanistan therefore we have become one of those benefactors out of necessity. It sucks, but that's life, sometimes.

Ron from Oscoda: If a diplomat (Hillary being the top diplomat in the most powerful country on the planet) were to call Afghanistan out for it's failures publicly it would be like a broken record since it's been that way forever, and destructive to the process of changing it so you don't move Afghanistan in the right direction by trashing them for their failures and not affirming their ally status (which IS how it stands, currently), that's just diplomacy 101 and common sense. Read about diplomacy and it's processes before decrying a NECESSARY DIPLOMATIC RELATIONSHIP with one of the countries that spawned so much anti-western sentiment, and actual terrorism within our borders, please. Not condescention, just a suggestion I think will benefit you.

I'm not a rocket scientist, but isn't this expected? When the Nazis invaded other nations, the invadees would do any thing to get the invaders out of their country, and I'm sorry to say, but Afghans are no different. They might not be as educated as in other parts of the world, but they can tell an invader when they see one. What I don't understand is why is it so hard for most Americans to comprehend. Actually, one of the most daring attempts ever was carried out by the Czech resistance under the code name of Operation Anthropoid killing a SS general officer and all Europe, including occupied countries rejoiced. I don't understand why now the rules of engagement and propaganda have to be changed to fit our agenda. I don't think invasions are looked up as something good ever, ergo, leave the damn country and the Afghani civilians, mostly women and children will thank us. Ditto, I'm sure the families of the dead invaders. If the Afghan war wasn't a priority, nor necessary for the retard pervert of Texas and his cadre of war criminals, why for Obama, AKA, Bush the third, has to be any different? Imagine all the billions we could save to put more teachers, more police, fix our fractured infrastructure and provide those wasted dollars in putting America back to work, so the homeless can have their homes back. I don't know how tea partiers, republicans be opposed to more jobs, better conditions for all, except that they don't want that black illegal from Kenya to succeed, but that is not only racist to the nth degree, but asinine, and masochistic as well.

The 6 NATO/ISAF soldiers killed by a roadbomb in Eastern Afghanistan according to AFP are Americans. One (1) ISAF soldier was killed by a roadbomb in the south earlier on Sunday - also several Afghan civilians and policemen were killed in Southern Afghanistan on Sunday. Afghanistan is becoming a very dangerous turf for civilians- those in the police and their tutors even more so.

The blood is on Bush's hands, and his alone.

                  Can you PLEASE Explain this....

"WEST POINT, N.Y. — Declaring "our security is at stake," President Barack Obama ordered an additional 30,000 U.S. troops into the long war in Afghanistan Tuesday night, nearly tripling the force he inherited as commander in chief. He promised an impatient public he would begin bringing units home in 18 months.

The buildup to about 100,000 troops will begin almost immediately – the first Marines will be in place by Christmas – and will cost $30 billion for the first year alone."

Note the civilian casualties! 16 innocent women and children killed! And these cowardly, worthless muslim scum blame the US for civilian casualties? If/when we take our the terrorist killers and there are any civilian deaths at all they are miniscule compared to the killing done by these muslim slime balls. Get out of that worthless, illiterate, hate filled failed country now! Let these ignorant muslim cowards continue killing each other and of course thier favorite targets....women and children! Wake up world! Islam is the greatest scourge this world has ever faced!

The Middle East is the Land of da Devil. The U S should just stay out of there. They will never have Peace.

Why do all the Middle Eastern women have to dress up like “Cousin It”?

Hopefully there will come a day when we can tell them to “Drink their Oil and Eat their Sand”.

Remember Republicans, when these Foreign Countries ask for Aid and Funding….just say No.

Cut off all Funding to Pakistan. Why are we giving them Billions of $$$$$$ just to be our “Little Friend”? Did they Apologize for Hiding Out Bin Laden?

If you look up the word “Explosion” in an Arabic dictionary, it means “A call to Prayer”. This is a way of life, mentality, for the Muslims and people from the Middle East. It's all they know. These Whack Job Extremist use "Religion" as a front and an excuse to carry out their "Evil Plans" such as blowing up donkeys. I don’t think “Allah” is going to be happy with that.

How many U.S. and NATO troops have died in Afghanistan? 6,000? 7,000? How many came back with missing limbs, brain trauma, and PTSD that will disable them for the remainder of their lives?

And what do we have to show for it? Absolutely nothing.

The war drained the U.S. Treasury. Yes, the defense contractors (Halliburton, etc.) made out like bandits.

The Taliban are just as strong as they ever were. The Karzai government is corrupt. It's another Viet Nam. We apparently have a learning disability.

The destruction of the Taliban, and the shredding of Al Qaeda.

No terrorist attacks on US soil.

                        It's another Viet Nam.

No, it is certainly NOT another Vietnam.

You see, in Vietnam, they were willing to be happy with tossing us out. They wanted us out, and to live by themselves.

With the Taliban and Al Qaeda, they'll follow us back here to kill us all.

                        Even you, 'infidel'.

Really? With all of the infighting, roadside bombs and sneak ambushes? Could have fooled me there bud.

No, it is certainly NOT another Vietnam.

El wrongo. It is Viet Nam all over again. Only difference is, we're fighting a useless cause on a pile of rocks instead of in a jungle or on rice patties.

You see, in Vietnam, they were willing to be happy with tossing us out. They wanted us out

Sounds a lot like the Taliban, and the general Afghan population, doesn't it?

With the Taliban and Al Qaeda, they'll follow us back here to kill us all.

Oh, but the training of Taliban terrorists Afghans just so that they can turn on you is really working out swell, right?

You can kill a lot of things with a bomb and a bullet. A fifteen century old ideology isn't one of them.

                        Dry up, please.

If this was still Bushie's watch, the liberal media would be foaming at the mouth. They'd shriek and bray about drone attacks, they'd be screaming about the Afghan surge, they'd be apoplectic about the loss of that drone to Iran.

They would foam at the mouth over the prospect of the targeted assassination of ANY US citizen without 'due process' and 'Civil Rights'.

But, since there's a Democrat in charge, well, we shouldn't find these acts too terrible; in fact they're barely worth mentioning.

Besides, the editors at MSNBC know that the Zimmerman-Martin story is much better to dwell upon!

Srsly... Aunt Anna, you are going to utter such vaccuous ineptitude as 'pearls of wisdom'? What of the 4000+ who died in Iraq in W's other more glamorous and equally mendacious war of empire?
