Police: Armed man surrenders after Paris standoff

An armed man has been taken into custody by police near Paris, France, after allegedly taking several adults and children hostage at a nursery school. TODAY's Natalie Morales has more details.

Updated at 7:25 a.m. ET: PARIS - An armed man briefly took an adult hostage at a nursery school south of Paris on Tuesday.

The intruder, who entered the school in Vitry-sur-Seine on the southern edge of the capital shortly before opening time, freed the hostage after a few hours and later surrendered to police, said Ludovic Monier, a policeman at the scene.

"At 12.10 (6:10 a.m. ET) the hostage-taker was taken out (of the building) calmly ... without any shots fired," Monier told reporters.

Some children were initially also taken hostage but were released unharmed.

An official said the last remaining adult held was the parent of one of the children. French schools are on summer vacation but are running summer activities.

You notice, no shots were fired. They may have them, but they apparently don't use them. Fortunately this was resolved that way.

Another dumb stereotype, what are you, 5 years old ? The Kaiser, eh ? Or is it the Fuhrer ?

Remember Lafayette, google him if you have to.

    Lafayette?

That's the best you have? :)

The last time the French were an effective military/world power was when a Corsican named himself their Emperor.

I hope this dispute ends without bloodshed and both adults make it out alive. Enough violence in this world.

As far as French and guns, they have learned from here, shoot and kill and get away with it (now they have 8 million "Muslim criminals"), the police shot and killed 7 people here just yesterday, why is each one of those not reported????

Freedom Freedom Freedom! but we have 2- 6 month educated people shoot and kill the public without any consequences, like when they come home from Iraq and Afghanistan and well trained to have no remorse what so ever!

Only UK is left now with Police having no guns on them!

But did you know that each and every single bullit shot by Germany police the entire last year is all accounted for (82), and in Denmark any police killing almost always goes to the supreeme court, and 60 % of them go to jail!--Can you imagine that happening here in the land of FREEDOM, and Law and Order?

If we didn't have so many well-armed criminals, the police probably wouldn't have to shoot so often. We talk about people being justified in their fear and mistrust of the police; well imagine police officers' experience with the scum of our society and how that influences their behavior too.

No thanks (not the top leaders in science), and that really would have nothing to do with shoot and kill by US and French police would it?(both countries totally overloaded with battling other religions, even though they have several other Christian versions killing the world worst by far so far (2000 years)!--And I have been a lot to all western countries, most do not shoot and kill the public daily!

                    #9.4 - Tue Jul 10, 2012 8:57 AM EDT

when you say both france and US are overloaded with 'battling other religions' I'm confused because they are countries, not religions. The US has gone to war with too many countries, most recently Iraq, but I'm not aware of them ever going to war with a religion.

Also, are you really going to resort to dusting off the history books to condemn Christianity? We're living in 2012 and the facts of today are that Christian religions, like other religions, are largely peaceful. Individuals claiming to be Christians might commit bad deeds and murder, but those are overshadowed by the crimes of our Muslim brothers. We know history, but we live in the present.

Sammie--I agree, very likely--the same in Denmark, and Germany!

RL---Did you Obama haters hear that Tex now is number one with 25 % without health ins? It always is so sad to hear when government needs to hire more police to hold back the population when they want to share in the collected taxes!--But I have seen Austin, College station (AM) and Huston/Dallas are doing well with beggers everywhere, imagine when they get sick!-Never mind the 50,000 veterans up and down the west coast--just about everywhere!

PS I am not for Obama either, I want to have a country that works as the instruments, planes and computeres I have designed for the globe!--ALL POLITICS is simply stupid, and never solves anything!

And if you are into English, do not bother, I have enough trouble with my other 5 languages, it is not that important compared to what I do!

So now you can start!--Should I go back to Denmark number one on the globe--but then I would wonder why USA spent a lot of time getting me to come here--

Did the Government want to get you here, or was it a private corporation? Big difference.

And while I agree that Denmark is a very lovely place, you didn't mention that about 13% of it's population is also living below the poverty level of the country.

You also note health care in TX. How many of that 25% that you note are illegal aliens?

It's easy to compare Denmark to the USA, but remember that the population of New York City alone is greater than the entire country of Denmark. Your comparison isn't even apples and oranges. At least apples and oranges are both fruits.

I just like honesty, rather than the B.S. programming that the US tries to train everyone to believe. There is a lot of quasi law, and unwritten social law that hems most in here. All I have to do is listen to the angry, state of nature, survival of the fittest rhetoric that the typical American mindlessly spews...and I know exactly how civilized they are. Also, I can tell by the way this country tries to ignore certain bullying and harassment (every kind except when it involves a female), and by the way many Americans respond to victims of wild animal attacks.

Timmy...maybe my opinion of Americans would improve if these "exceptions to the rule" ever had the balls to stand up against the barbaric majority, but after reading the US History books I see it is probably a lost cause. The Civil Rights Movement was inspirational, but it resulted not from others having the balls to stand up for what was right. It resulted from centuries of waiting, toil and struggle...until the day blacks had enough power to force the majority into giving them their Constitutional rights.

pauper - read some more history books and see how most societies have plenty of reasons to be ashamed of their behavior. Most also have much to be proud of, including Americans. If you're so dismayed about how long it took for blacks to get their civil rights here, go to a Muslim country and try to advance women's rights or Christian rights or gay rights and then tell us how terrible we are.

May I suggest you kindly go back to watching tv and living off hubby's money. No one died for my "freedoms"....killing poor farmers in Vietnam, Korea, and in other far-flung places has no bearing on my freedom. Also, the US's war with Germany would have been laudable, but we believe in everything Hitler did (except for killing rich Jews....because we are "Christian" and love to help big banks and rich folks). The wars in the Middle East.....if the US didn't want those wars they should have left those folks and their oil alone. I'm certain if the Middle Easterners had come to the US, tried to dictate to Americans how to order their societies, run their businesses, etc...the US would have done the same things as they eventually did to us.

pauper, you're finally making sense. The US should have stayed out of the middle east but the economic interest was too great. Bad decision. The result is the chaos and hatred we're getting from many of those people in recent decades. All the money we spent in the past 60 years on alternatingly supporting and desposing dictators in oil rich nations could have been directed to finding alternative energy sources and maybe we'd be living with more peace today. Your Christian comments are off base though. Helping big banks and rich folks is capitalism, cronyism, greed, economic policy, etc. but it's not a religion, certainly not my Christianity.

Its interesting as well that you point to the 'Greatness' rhetoric without exploring any deeper understanding. I'm not sure if this is intentional obfuscation by you so much as it indicates a more simple ignorance of the subject matter.

Nazi rhetoric was based on a racial standard. As such any who 'qualified' for the racial community based on their convoluted and confused thinking, fit within a 'racial community'. National Socialism then included Czech's, Volga Germans, Danzig Corridor Germans, Estonian Germans and even Germans located in the US. It was a national community based on a flawed and meaningless concept of pure race.

Exceptionalism, as conceived here in no way excludes any ethnic minority. Indeed, that is what makes it so radically different. Although, we certainly have our share of exclusionary policies and descrimination- african slavery, "WOP's need not apply", Jim Crow and so on-unlike most other countries we have embraced the polar opposite of that. I know that's not what you seem to be programmed to believe but the reality is that few conservatives oppose legal immigration. What we do oppose is a porous border in which not only do immigrants sneak across illegally but they are led to the border area in many cases to die, they are led by drug traffickers and indeed, in many instances it is the illicit drug trade itself that gains the most by an open border.

Don't tell me that exceptionalism equals racism. I, as well as many others here know better. You can continue to delude yourself with that kind of lie if you want but many of us see it for just that.

Pathetic. I hoped for at least a little more of an attempt but that was weaker than I could have ever guessed. Your argumentation skills are astoundingly weak. Try again, lol.

Thank God no one was hurt or killed, especially any children! I'm glad it had a good outcome.

Was he a Muslim or just some other equivalent psychopath? And, who cares what the French police compare it to? They're crybabies anyway and are afraid to "hurt" Muslim feelings, like they have feelings to hurt. In an instant, it easily could have been just as bad as the terrorist attack where the Jewish children were killed.

When you expose your Country to the deadly disease called Muslims then you must expect people to die. You must expect fear and sorrow to come along with the fatal disease.

But..... but... but France has gun control laws that are thousands of pages long, require registration, licensing, and other safety procedures that make California and New York gun laws look tame. How on earth could this have happened?

That's the point, though, it very rarely happens in france, because of gun laws. In the US, the hostage taking/standoff with police/school shooting is a regular feature of the news/entertainment channel CNN. I think we're overdue for one..
