Clinton holds first meeting with Egypt's Morsi amid political standoff

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton meets with newly elected Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, a scene that no one would have believed just 18 months ago. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met with newly elected Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi for the first time, arriving in Egypt amid a showdown between the Islamist president and the country’s powerful military leadership that has filled the gap since the ouster of long-time President Hosni Mubarak.

In comments at a news conference after her meeting with Morsi, Clinton said the United States supports the full establishment of democratic rule in Egypt and the return of its military to an exclusively national security role. She was scheduled to meet on Sunday with Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi who headed a group of generals who oversaw Egypt's transition period.

"The United States supports the full transition to civilian rule with all that entails,'' Clinton said during a news conference after her meeting with Morsi. She commended the military's stabilizing role during Egypt's transition, Reuters reported.

"But there is more work ahead. And I think the issues around the parliament, the constitution have to be resolved between and among Egyptians. I will look forward to discussing these issues tomorrow with Field Marshall Tantawi and in working to support the military's return to a purely national security role.''

The Egyptian military ruled the country for 16 months until Morsi's inauguration on June 30, but the generals retained far-reaching powers and stripped the presidency of many powers before they stepped down.

Even before that, Egypt's Supreme Constitutional Court dissolved the first democratically elected parliament, which was Islamist-dominated, after ruling that a third of its members were elected illegally. Morsi has tried to reinstate the lawmakers, many of them allies from the Muslim Brotherhood.

Prior to their meeting Clinton and Morsi exchanged pleasantries in the presence of the media, the BBC reported. Clinton talked about the rapid pace of change in Egypt.

Morsi said: "We are very very keen to meet you and happy that you are here."

The Associated Press noted that the two did not shake hands when they first met, sparking speculation about whether Morsi’s beliefs prohibited it. But the president shook hands with Clinton and the entire U.S. delegation behind closed doors, according to a U.S. official, the AP reported later.

Clinton's trip is also intended to shore up the U.S.-Egypt relationship. Mubarak was a staunch military and strategic ally in the region. Morsi’s Islamic Brotherhood was outlawed by the Mubarak regime for decades.

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi meets with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at the presidential palace in Cairo, Egypt on Saturday.

Clinton emphasized the need for Egypt to adhere to its 1979 peace treaty with Israel, and offered U.S. support to help Cairo regain control of the increasingly lawless Sinai Peninsula — a major security concern for Israel, Reuters reported. She is slated to fly to Israel from Egypt.

In Egypt, Clinton will highlight a number of initiatives the United States is taking to bolster the Egyptian economy, which has structural problems from the past three decades under the Mubarak regime and suffered a hit to key industries including tourism amid political turmoil.

The Obama administration has promised a billions dollars in support of the new Egyptian government when it was formed.

Clinton was expected to begin talking about the details of that support package and debt relief — providing funds that can go into job-creating programs and training, especially focused on Egypt's young people, a senior U.S. official said.

In addition, Clinton was planning to announce the head of a new U.S. Egypt Enterprise Fund, initially capitalized at $60 million to invest in the country and speak to the Egyptian leadership about the steps they need to take to tap into another $250 million U.S. fund earmarked for small and medium-sized enterprises.

I will support and vote for Hillary Clinton if she ever runs for POTUS. She is one tough old bird and has the hardest job in the administration right now...and yeah, I think the tremendous stress she has to deal with on a daily basis is taking it's physical toll. Being POTUS is a pretty rough occupation, sure, but SoS in 2012 is even tougher, IMO. She is a true patriot and warrior, and worthy of the utmost respect, regardless of your political beliefs. Compared to her job right now, actually running the country would be a piece of cake for her. And she would have all the experience necessary for it, that's for sure.

Hillary Clinton could probably whoop ass on the likes of prosper. Hillary 2016.

North Korea, Iran, the Syria, Libya, South America a, the Soviet "Restart" Union... name it, show me the stress she's under! The only stress I can imagine she has is to look at her face in the mirror every day! She and Obama have accomplished ZERO!!

YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW! ... which is the case for most of you shepard sheep of the Retardicants.

The President wants to extend the Bush tax-cuts for those that earn LESS THAN $200k-a-year. But the GOP controlled house is DEMANDING that the tax-cuts for those that make more than $200k-a-year remain, also.

Per the IRS, less than 3% of Americans filed for earnings more than $200k-a-year in 2011. It begs to question: who are these morons opposed to the President's proposal to extend the tax-cuts for the other 97%-rest-of-us!!!

There is an extreme difference between Harry Reid's "Mormonism" and that of Mitt Romney. Reid is quite open about it and by all accounts welcomes people's questions about the LDS church as the "legitimate" way for a Senator to prosletize. There are essentially no "off limits" questions about Reid's Mormonism.

Romney, on the other hand, really does not want his Mormonism discussed. In the 2008 primary he attempted to bring suit to stop "media professionals" from asking questions about his "garments" and other issues that are private to his personal religious belieft. Needless to day, the judge threw it out with prejudice as a classic example of prior restraint. Immediately after the ruling, Romney cancelled an interview with MTV. MTV has asked every presidential candidate since Carter what type of underwear they wore (Kerry was boxers, Bush was briefs and Clinton claimed to wear both boxers and briefs depending on his mood.)

The Romney campaign during the 2008 tried to stifle (unsuccessfully) Karl Rove's position that Obama's religion was "fair game" with the Rev. Wright ads. The campaign blamed part of his loss to McCain on Karl Rove drawing too much attention to the candidates' religion.

There are a lot of spectacularly surprsing beliefs embedded in LDS theology. While some are abviously metaphorical, most are not. That the LDS god is from a star/planet Kolob is directly out of the Book of Abraham in the Book of Mormon. If you want to see approximately what Romney's underwear looks like, here is a link to an article that has pictures: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temple_garment I am sure Reid wears something similar.

The media do not like to cover it unless really forced to, as Obama was forced to do because of Rove's "Reverent Wright" ad campaign. As a consequence there is virtually no coverage of Romney's religion despite its potential for political consequences. For example, as governor of Massacheusetts, Romney proposed a tax on all caffeine-containing foods and drinks, including chocolate be taxed at the same rate as liquor --- an intrusion of LDS beliefs that obviously did not work out. Especially in the south, there is a lot of buzz from fundamentalist pulpits that Mormons are not Christians. Essentially this is technically correct. All Christians accept the Nicene (Apostles) Creed as the definitive profession of Christian beliefs. Mormons do not accept the Nicene Creed ergo they are technically not Christians. In their defense I would point out that Calvinists (which were about half of all religious people ion this country when it was founded) accepted the Nicene Creed, but believed that Christ was a "pseudopod" of God that was "exuded" in order for God to send a message to mankind and then reabsorbed into God after that message was delivered. They considered Christ to actually be irrelevant and immaterial religiously when separated from His message.

I don't think that Romney's religion (or Reid's for that matter) will influence anyone to vote against him. But I do expect a potentially significant number of southern and other religious fundamentalists to stay at home and not vote so they don't have to make that choice.

The current odds of Obama winning on Nov 6th are 67.7% versus 32.3% for Romney. That would be 298 electoral votes for Obama versus 240 for Romney. If the election were held today, the estimate is 80.1% for Obama versus 19.9% for Romney. Not looking so good for BainBoy.

    @JSinSD,

The "reason" that we give money to Egypt in the form of both economic and military aid is that the Camp David Accords require that aid to both Egypt and Israel have "parity." This boils down to --- if we cut aid to Egypt, we have to cut it for Israel as well.

We try not to give much foreign aid in no-strings-attached cash because the Egyuptian military (who also ran most of the country until recently) is so corrupt. So we tend to give economic aid money to specific projects that we can carefully watch rather than giving them a check. In terms of military aid, on the other hand, we give them equipment such as Abrams tanks and F-16's that not only create jobs for Americans, but cause the Egyptian military to have to spend a considerable percentage of its non-aid military budget on American-made weapons and spares.

The USA is not as bug a donor of foreign aid than you think. We do give the most of any country in total amount, but fall back into around 15th place if you do itt as per capita or as a percentage of GDP. We give about as much fireign ais as Britain and France combined if that puts it into perspective.

The Egyptian people don't hate us. Period. They voted for a Muslim Brotherhood President for the simple reason that Morsi's opposition was a former Mubarak loyalist who is pro-military. The whole point of the uprising in Egypt was to kick out all of the corrupt military running the government, not just change faces. If you look at Libya's just-finished elections the Muslim Brotherhood finished a bad second to a secular "liberal" candidate. The same thing will likely happen in Egypt if a candidate runs who is secular and never affiliated with the military.

The NEW GOP suckered sheep are loving this article of worldwide importance. The ignorance and stupidity they evoke is truly laughable. I hope they do not stop because it only makes the democrats more rightous. This new republican party wants division amoung our citizenry. That is all they have accomplished the last 3.5 years. NOTHING ELSE. Just division. ONLY polarized idiots can not see it. If that is american honor, you stains can have it.

I doubt this new leadership in Egypt is rightous either. We all can be glad Hillary is in charge of america's foriegn affairs. Like Obama, PROVEN leadership, even with the stains we have to deal with here (republicans), and the stains we deal with worldwide. These two make me proud to be an american. Man, there sure is a lot of hate here hahahah. It's funny how everyone picks a side and then fervently blames the other side for the problems the country has. Our country has been headed down a road for a long time. You may *think* you agree or disagree with a certain political affiliation, but have you ever stopped to look at how different the two 'choices' for our government are..? It's only different on a few surface issues, but at the core where it matters, it's all the same. But continue falling into your little slots of Democrat vs Republican or Liberal vs Conservative. Keep labeling yourself and mapping out your entire array of opinions with a few keyword descriptions. Then go vote and pretend you are making a difference. Pretend that when you lose the election, that's why the country is going downhill. Pretend that when you win the election, everything would have been even worse if the other guy won.

I myself and probably many others would like to know where this administration is going to get the money from to support this new Egyptian government. We have to borrow money to keep ours going. Must be nice to take away from those who could use it that work hard to support their own families let alone another government that will squander what they receive and the people of that nation will not see a dime.

The Occupy movement got it wrong. Don't go after the people who earn the money go after the ones who cannot properly manage because not only do they encourage but are part of it. Does not matter what political party.

I think if the people of this nation could put aside their differences it would be amazing what could be done. Not everyone is right or wrong. We all want the same thing if you think about it. It's the path to achieve is what separates. All sides have to own their share.

      rachel-3673200,

You probably don't really want to focus on "policy and actions" of this current administration, simply stated, they've accomplished exactly nothing, at least not legitimately. Anything they promote as having accomplished, was done behind closed doors, on Christmas Eve, or using Reconciliation voting rather than the entire house and senate being allowed to vote on a particular bill.

To reiterate, the Obama Administration has done nothing. With the exception of, opening up our borders, allowing 800,000 illegals to stay in the country if they get a work visa, (remember there are almost 17 million Americans, legal Americans, out of work. Where are these newest "unregistered voters" going to get jobs ? And if they don't find jobs will they be counted as unemployed or sent back ? Of course not.) passing a healthcare bill that 67% of the people didn't want, adding an additiona 5 Trillion Dollars to the deficit (in less than four years) appointed almost 40 "Czars" to positions within his administration to add new regulations to almost anything you or a business can do, and the list continues to grow on an almost daily basis. Oh, and most recently, handed the American People the absolute largest tax increase in history.

Please, don't let anyone tell Barack Hussein Obama what comes after a trillion !

Defend America, Defend the Constitution, Defeat Obama.

      Tony D-373561,

You are absolutely correct, on all points. The radical Muslimism has already started in Dearborn, Michigan. Dearborn has one of, if not the, largest population of Muslims outside of the Middle East, with about 40% Muslims. Recently they (the Muslims) were spitting on and stoning Christians ands Jews from the same community on June 28th, 2011 at a Muslim Arab Festival.

Last time I looked Dearborn Michigan was in the United States, not the United Arab Republic. Why didn't our esteemed Attorney General, Eric Holder, check into any racial (ethnical) wrong doing from our Muslim guests ? How can this be allowed to happen in an American City, by obviously radical Muslims. Kick their asses out, send them back to their land of sand. They hate us, so throw their hatred filled asses out.

Next thing you know Barack Hussein Obama will be granting them amnesty too.

Putzz for duh wants to talk about Romney...Ok!........Now for example, take Romney.........Please!

Romney, Norquist, and Rove walk into a bar, and the bartender says, "What is this...a joke?"

I give you ..........................Romney the musical.........The Wizard of Odds.

When Norquist was asked about republican nominees for president, Norquist said all they need was someone to sign the documents.

So the repubs need a strawman....Hmmmm!. ......The Wizard of Odds needs a strawman......

Romney the strawman met with Cheney the other day at Cheney's home. Dorothy Cheney asked Romney, "Strawman, What would you do if you had a brain?" Romney the Strawman broke out in song, " Why if I had a brain I could...I could while away the hours, conferring with the flowers, consulting for the BAIN. And my head I'd be a-scratchin', while my thoughts were busy hatchin', if I hadn't worked for BAIN!

I'm not generally one to criticize people about their looks, but what has happened to this woman? She used to be a nice - not great - but certainly decent looking lady. She needs to go back to the shorter haircut, lose some of the weight she has put on, and get some sleep. I realize traveling around the world can be tough on a person what with the time changes, but she looks worse by the week. Really to the point of concern about her health.

            Dear Lore&Wisdom,

As I've mentioned to someone else, do a little reserch before you start running your mouth. When I said Dearborn Michigan has the highest Muslim population outside of the Middle East, it was not just my analysis, it just so happens to be true. Try googling it genius, maybe you'll learn something.

However that has absolutely nothing to do with the spitting on and stoning of the Jews and Christians that also live in Dearborn. Which was the point of my posting, however I suppose you condone that sort of behavior though, you certainly at least sound like an idiot, or someone wanting to be a martyr for their Allah.

I suppose next you'll try to tell me that it didn't happen, again google it, Wisdom Boy. Also Wisdom Boy, I just happen to live quite close to the area in Dearborn where these events happened.

I'm betting your one of those mindless liberals that prowl the internet, looking for a place to discharge your "wisdom" and to lead the rest of us to your land of rapture and exhilaration, lead by your Messiah Barack Hussein Obama. Get a life Wisdom Boy.

John in Battle Creek - Bush Sr. (you know, the smart one) was president during the collapse of the Soviet Union. Unlike junior, his international statesmanship is pretty well regarded. Check out the book "Statecraft". He had to do quite a dance to keep Gorby, a guy they could work with, in office while letting the USSR dismantle. It's a pretty good read.

Bush reaped the rewards politically then went and vommited on people, great international representative Bush was. Furhtermore, Communism is not Socialism by standerd of modern social policy, ignorance must be a family trait. No, I am not a liberal or a conservative, I am an American. As to whether you are a troll or not, let me explain what that is also, one who posts with pure ignorance to elicit a feedback even though it has nothing to do with the topic at hand. Lore and Wisdom, sorry, but Communism is indeed socialism as practiced by any nation that called itself "communist". The whole notion of communism is pure fantasy. There never will be true equality of people in the world, as long as there is greed, lust for power, etc. On top of that people are not equal at all. Some are smarter than others, more physically attractive or stronger, better work ethic, etc. The whole thing was a fantasy dreamed up by Marx and Engels(both rich kids) in suckering the proletariat into believeing in the collective and getting totally ripped off in the process. It seems that modern "democracy" is pretty much the same in that respect. It was a massive trick in getting the proletariat to sign over their freedom to be bound by a document that was written by rich men, for their economic benefit.

Hillary has gone native. She is no longer attempting any form of grooming or attempts at keeping up appearances. I understand her mindset, except that if you are in the public eye, as a representative of your government it is a good idea to at least make an attempt to look somewhat poised and professional. She is a member of the Obama administration, perhaps good grooming and poise and polish are no longer necessary?

I am NOT a Hillary Clinton fan. Never have been, never will be. However, having said that, I am extremely pleased to see that she is meeting with the avowed Islamist leader of Egypt as an EQUAL. It must be very difficult for Morsi to have to accept a WOMAN as his equal. Even worse from his Islamist worldview must be the fact that Hillary doesn't have her hair covered, doesn't have her face covered, and isn't locked from head to toe in a burqa. It is a shame however that she did not insist on him shaking her hand. As I said earlier, I am no Hillary fan but I think I could immensely enjoy seeing what would happen if somebody tried to insist she adhere to Sharia in her dressing choices.

Decibella - She's also a Marxist and has been since her college days. Also she could try to change her appearance for the better. Condoleeza Rice never went out to a public or gov't function looking as though she hadn't combed her hair and slept in her clothes. And she certainly didn't meet with foreign dignitaries looking that way either. Hillary is not a marxist, she is a progressive. The difference is that a marxist wants to make everybody the same, equally oppressed. A progressive wants the same with the difference that they will be one of the 'enlightened elite' ruling over the collective. She sure has made a lot of money, which is another hallmark of the breed, they want to destroy capitalism, except of course, for that capitalism that makes them rich.

Clinton will highlight a number of initiatives the United States is taking to bolster the Egyptian economy...

How about taking a number of initiatives to bolster the U.S. economy instead?

Propping up a radical Islamist government is going to be bad news for everyone down the road a bit.

$60 million more American tax dollars for Egypt and the muslim brotherhood with another $250 million to follow. Couldn't the administration figure out better uses for our tax dollars in this country?

As long as this administration is with us they won't put any of our tax dollars to good use - they haven't yet. They don't work for us, they work for Soros, Alinsky, the Muslim Brotherhood and the Biederberg Group. So much for our "American government".

Not quite sure what Egypt potentially becoming an Islamic state has to do with the gay lifestyle. Unless you're trying to make the point that the more men that see her grill, the higher the likelihood more will become homosexual. I think the girl is way overdue for one of those Lifestyle Lifts I see on TV about every 2 minutes.

First of all I am not a democrat or a republican. but if Hillery would run for Pres. I would vote for her. I think she would make a great President. Now that I've said that and mean it, I would also like to say that I am the same age as her, and I have been a Hairdresser for 44 years and have been very successful having said that, Its time, and it has been for a long time, for her to do something with that MOP. First of all she's to old to have that length. And if she desperately wants it that long than she has to wear it off her face, have a soft perm and put some body in it. I didn't understand her daughter, when she was planning her wedding ,she insisted her Father loose some weight, so he would look good. I wonder why she didn't advise her Mother to do the same thing,( well at least she wore a dress and not a pant suit.) Yes, I just cringe when I see her, and I see why old Bill strayed.

Hillary has intelligence and diplomacy - and consistently stands by USA's message in areas of human rights, Democracy, environment, etc etc., while she establishes civilized, professional relationships with leaders of very different values.

Pros & Karlo, what can YOU do for America, except for being embarrassed when there is no need to be, picking on gay people, or favoring gorgeous people? Did you vote for W Bush, twice?

Giving money to our enemy. OUR MONEY! At a time when the US is so financially screwed. We are helping their economic situation, ! Not to mention the possibility to be able to tap into another $250 million U.S. fund earmarked for small and medium-sized enterprises. What a bunch of crooks and traitors!

Good point Jillieji, there is a lot at stake here and HRC's appearance has nothing to do with it. It's her foolish coddling of Islamists in the M.E. that is the problem.

Don't think for a second that appearances don't matter. If the person who represents this country looks like the before head shot for a plastic surgeon then you are mistaken. Appearance, just like the ability to speak correctly, count for so very much in the diplomatic world. But since she hasn't accomplished a single thing in almost 4 years other than rack-up millions of 'freequent' flier miles, I have absolutely zero expectations that she is in Egypt to actually accomplish anything. So all that's left is appearances. If anyone posting here is an ignoramus it's you for thinking that she was going to promise anything to the new Muslim Brotherhood leader.
