Two killed, 19 wounded in Toronto party shooting

Two people died and at least 19 others were wounded at a block party shooting in Toronto. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

Two people have died and at least 19 others were wounded in a shooting at a block party in the eastern Toronto suburb of Scarborough Monday night, according to Canadian media reports.

Toronto police Chief Bill Blair told CBC that a teenage girl and a man aged about 20 had been killed in the violence shortly before 11 p.m. ET Monday.

Police survey a crime scene following a shooting in Scarborough, a suburb of east Toronto, on Tuesday morning.

An infant was also wounded in the shooting, he told CBC, although the child's injuries were not life threatening.

"I've been a cop for 35 years, this is the worst incidence of gun violence in my memory anywhere in North America," Blair said.

A report in the Globe and Mail said police had a person in custody, and that the shooting appeared to be a dispute.

Leighton Robinson, a man who said he knew someone injured at the scene, told the newspaper the event was a typical block party.

"It's got to stop, there's no need for it," he said.

"I've been a cop for 35 years, this is the worst incidence of gun violence in my memory anywhere in North America," -----Yikes, has this guy ever been to the US, or Mexico for that matter?

@N. American made who made a comment about how Canada's gun policies and socialism were making this happen. Seems you did not read about the bar shooting in ALABAMA today where 21 people were shot. Not that it would matter I suppose since you obviously have drunk the "I should be able to own any gun at all" kool aid.

      Eriete:

The 17 people who were actually shot here were quite enough thank you. No need to exaggerate or is that how you get your jollies?

I guess Chief Blair has never heard of Ciudad Juarez.

All the libs that think Canada has better health care and is safer with better paying jobs should pack up and move there. The US would be better off.

No thanks - I lived there for 6 years. It's incredible how much the government controls.

I thought all you good folks said this could only happen in Alabama?

You see Burton Cummings and all the rest of you self-righteous Canadians, it's not the guns, it's the people. Violence can happen anywhere and it has now in your backyard. By the way didn't some other nut job shoot up a mall in your neck of the woods last month too? Guess thanks to your stringent gun laws, only the criminals have access and ALWAYS will . Common sense folks. I love my guns, the defense they provide, and the good food they help put on my table here in the U.S. Thank you Lord.

Something the gun-grabbers never seem to understand is that a gun is simply an inanimate object, a tool if you will. It has no brain, no decision making ability. It can be used by a person for good or evil, with the person using it being the only determining factor. The determining factor(s) are the mind and character of the person behind it. Take away firearms ( physically impossible due to sheer volume) and the evil minded will simply, quickly and easily, make bombs for a mass casualty deed, which can be done far easier than buying a gun, or revert to edged or pointed weapons which are silent and give no warning or exposure. How about we start putting the blame where it belongs.

They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Ben Franklin, a far wiser man than the politicians we have now, in both parties.

So, I guess Canada is the next big place for serial killers. The whole Country is a gun free zone- just like our theaters and universities.
