Syrian Brig.-Gen. Manaf Tlas
Syrian General Manaf Tlas, a defector once in the inner circle of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, has resurfaced in France, French President Francois Hollande confirmed on Tuesday, Reuters reported.
News that Tlas, a former friend and ally of Assad, had fled Damascus emerged on July 6, but France had not previously confirmed his presence in the country.
"We have been informed about this situation. He is here," Hollande said at a news conference.
Tlas has not spoken publicly since his defection, but he sent a statement to the French news agency AFP on Tuesday, calling for a "constructive transition" in his country.
"I sincerely hope that the blood stops flowing and that the country emerges from the crisis through a phase of constructive transition that guarantees Syria its unity, stability and security, as well as the aspirations of its people," he said in the statement.
For a third straight day, Syrian military fought rebels in the capital where activists say government tanks are fighting back. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.
"I am ready like any other Syrian, with no other ambition, to fulfill my civic duty to contribute to a better future for my country, as much as I can, and like all those ... who have already made many sacrifices," he said.
According to a profile of Tlas published Tuesday in Al-Arabiya, the general was being groomed to be defense minister of Syria, following in the footsteps of his father, Mustafa Tlas, "one of the main pillars of the regime."
Manaf Tlas was involved in reconciliation efforts at the very beginning of the Syria’s uprising, but he had been under partial house arrest since May 2011 because he opposed the regime’s violent response to the unrest, according to a BBC report on Tlas' defection.
"Since the beginning of the Syrian revolution, Tlas has been 'brooding' sitting alone at his home or visiting his daughter Nahid in Paris for treatment or to escape the miserable situation," according to a columnist and friend of the Tlas family, Jihad el-Khazen, in the Al-Arabiya profile.
In a visit to a Syria refugee camp, British Foreign Minister William Hague listened to harrowing stories of the people who have been forced to flee their homes. Nearly 140 thousand people have crossed the border from Syria into neighboring Jordan to seek sanctuary from President Bashar al-Assad's deadly onslaught. NBC's John Ray reports.
The BBC reports that some in the opposition believe Tlas could play an important role in Syria’s future because he is seen as someone from the military establishment who has not been involved in the bloodshed.

here comes the British to save the day , just they did in Libya and Iraq , these thiefs are just as bad as these thugs they brought into Syria with their friends the Saudis and Qataris .
and off course the french , the other thieves , the ones that steal all of these little countries wealth and hide behind democracy and saving civilians lives , but they end up stealing the oil and everything they can get , Syria wouldn't be in that mess if it was not for these thieves and their friends , you know every body admitting that Alqiada are in Syria , except for our Hillary and McCain and all these fine and Patriotic politicians we got , they want to arm these people and they are dying to get our troops involve in that country , to help who ?? the Alqaiada and their Masters the Saudis and Qataris , and our paid off Media with all their honest and one sided stories , It beats everything i have ever seen . but with our politicians and media , none of us should be surprised .
Fascinating. And who is it, exactly, that paid off these multi-billion dollar media corporations that compete with each other and could profit tremendously from revealing that their competitors had been bribed? Or that someone had tried to bribe them? That's a hell of a story. How much money does it take to get a company to blatantly lie like that? Or in this case, several companies? Billions? Tens of billions? Come on turn, help me out, I'm a math guy.
Also, this is pretty much an aside at this point, but why should I care that Al Queda is on the rebels' side? How is that more important than all the terrible things Assad has done?
Al Queda probably is among rebels, but they are clearly not the only ones.
That's how revolutions always go, a bunch of very different organizations get together to overthraw the government, the turn on eachother. You never know which one ends up grabbing the power in the end, usually it's the nastiest of the bunch. To me, and appearently to most on the west, Assad and Al Queda appear about the same level of nasty, so while the things look crappy for the Syrians, the result wont make much difference.
That's why no one is coming to Syria to end it, not British , not French, not Americans.
They all talk about how much they feel for poor Syrians, but they do nothing, and secretly hope that the battle goes on for as long as possible, so the new government of Syria (whoever that might be) wont start looking for trouble outside their country and do something stupid.
Just looking at a picture of that dude you know he's a big guy. Looks like a little baby lion raised in the same pen that Assad grew in... I'm sure they clawed a bit themselves as they played together growing up. Obviously, Assad turned out to be a man-eating Jaffar but this guy instead a tame friendly one ready to serve on the side of the people.
I say it once again for Russia and China. Not to be fooled because these countries apart from their history with other types of government, they too have Democratic elections to elect a President. ... and now... this very now he is facing negative forces that wish to put him down, but he needs to show his power in-front of the people that elected him, by sticking up for the civil revolution occuring in Syria because they demand a government like the one that elected him.
Assad was born with a Silver Spoon in his mouth. Nothing like this General from Syria. This guy has the courage of a Lion.
Assad is a Coward, just like his barbaric father.
Why can't Assad be caught?--am sure the US Government and NATO are following Assad, waiting for the right moment to use the Drone on him--(yes, most likely the US has their hands in this one as well).
"Timing is everything", while massive massacres are happening at the cost of killing civilians..
Tlas father was in the inner circle of Assad's father. Brig general becomes a general for these media.
Their whole family was settled in France except this person. So this Sunni Tlas just ran away there!
By chance, if Assad, one of the best ME ruler, wins don't be surprised if the Tlas sings a different song and join Assad.
Looks like he should be leading the rebel forces.
That would probably be wise, but the rebels aren't likely to easily trust and take orders from someone who was part of the old regime. And Tlas wasn't just part of the old military, but part of Assad's inner circle. While it's to his credit that he defected and was unwilling to see the Syrian people slaughtered indefinitely, he still oversaw a lot of brutality and oppression, and I doubt many rebels would be willing to readily ignore that.
Hard to say, though. A lot of the SFA forces are defected soldiers, so maybe it wouldn't cause too much tension. But I think it would cause too many problems since the revolutionaries are divided enough as they are.
Traitors (Like whistle blowers) are hated by both sides. I see his freshly starched fatigues and spit shined boots soaked in blood in a few months and fat arsed Hillary laying a wreath at his paupers grave funeral site.
The game is up France, U.S and Britain. The whole world knows all you do is invade countries, create conflicts, put in dictatorships and assassinate presidents in order to steal other countries's resources. The only idiots left who can't see this are the brain-washed nationalists that have spent half their lives following Britney Spears, Justin Bieber and the Super Bowl.
And regarding the other idiot's question on "who" pays the media: are you a fool? The govt. OWNS the media. Either you're too immature to see it or have never gone past the 6th grade.
I'm that idiot, thank you. Don't know why you bothered to read and answer my question but couldn't look at my username.
That's a shocking revelation you have there, that the government owns the media. And I imagine that all the corporate bigwigs that manage the media companies would be equally shocked that either they or their subordinates are taking orders from the government. Somehow they never mentioned that in my 7th grade classes, so maybe I just went to a lousy school. I assume you have obvious proof for something like that, since you act as if everyone should know it? That would be awesome.
Hey SF accountant
Any idea what happened in Guatemala in the 1950's with Carlos Castillo Armas? and the CIA? and the United Fruit Company? Well, do some research and then you would have a broader understanding about The Media/USA governement. You would find some very fascinating facts...
You are right.
With Iraqi wars, we lost trillions and thousands of soldiers.
Who benefitted: Sunni Saudis, Kuwaiti, UAE and other ME rulers, oil companies, lobbyists, bankers and a few.
We got austerity measures, unemployment, health care cost cuts and many a times as "lazy" not willing to work.
In Europe it is worse with PIIGS.
That Hague, the cheap British agent of lobbyists, should shut his mouth. Tony Blair another cheap agent did huge damages in Iraqi wars.
Sunni Saudis became richer with oil price manipulations and financed the Sunni Islamic extremist Salaffi and Wahhabi mosques all over the world.
Followers of Islamic cult, especially Sunni Saudi inspired Islamic radicals and militants (al-Qaida, Salaffi, Wahhabi, MB and other label ones), are fast marching backwards to their seventh century desert tribal days of rapings, lootings, killings and genocides of non-Muslims and Muslims.
See al-Qaida and other Sunni radicals' genocides of Christians in Darfur, S. Sudan, Nigeria, Somalia and the other places.
New chapters are opening up in Egypt.
If Saddam was there, Saudis and co would have been busy fighting him instead of spreading their Sunni Islamic Salaffi and Wahhabi extremism all over the world at this fast rate.
Syria, Iran and other Shiites vs Sunni battles are not ours. Just keep away.
In pouncing on us, all will join hands!
Even Jewish lobby must have some patience instead of jumping on Saudis side in Iran and Syria.
Salaffi and MB backed Islamists will hurt Israel most.
Now we are talking business, very interesting to know that there are people who really can see what's going on with all those interventions, wars, invasions, and all those sort of things.
Do not misundertand me, I love my country but what we are doing all over the world it is not in the best interest of humankind, and worst of all, do not benefit our great country. probably we need to make a turn of 180 degrees, and rethink what we are really doing...
Assad is one of the best ME Muslim rulers. His only crime is that he belongs to a different Shiite sect ruling Sunnis.
In Bahrain for the barbaric and beastly bigoted Saudis it is all right and they sent their forces to put down peaceful Shiites protests.
If atrocities and barbarism on girls, children and women are the criteria, then the most despotic, autocratic and bigoted Sunni Saudi ruler with his 5000 princes and princesses, Kuwaiti, UAE and other Arab League Sunni rulers and their rich sheiks are the biggest culprits in the history.
Look at their seventh century desert mindset dresses. Are they in 21st century?
In killing of opponents again, these people have established world records.
If the US, Britain and others support such Sunni barbarians and beasts who treat girls and women as cheap sex slaves, then one can only conclude that Saudis, oil companies and their lobbyists determine what to see, how to lecture and where and when to act.
Rest like “human rights”, “killing of children and women”, “militants”, “terrorists”, “WMDs”, “chemical weapons” and so on are a pure hoax.
Similar hoaxes were played each time before Iraqi wars on directions of Saudi, oil companies and their lobbyists.
You keep saying that he's "one of the best ME Muslim rulers" like you expect anyone to believe it. Does he get that honor simply because every other ruler is worse, or do you seriously hold up his atrocities as acceptable and necessary in pursuit of maintaining stability in his country? Are you being serious when you claim that "human rights" are a hoax?
Your mumbling about Sunni and Shiite is completely irrelevant. The idea that one sect is better or worse than the other is exactly the sort of BS tribalism that has divided these people for centuries and made peace in the region so difficult, and I won't contribute to that garbage (same as Christian vs. Muslim, for that matter).
Ohhhhh, but the American sheeple believe whatever the Great Satan 'spoon feeds' 'em!
SF accountant: I don't care much for your partisan and condratictary comments. You do pick and chose of posts/news/items/stories and write nonsense.
They are nothing but crap!
Another Chalabi 'wannabe a hero schmuck' now LQQKing for glory and higher political office. He used to train al-Qaeda terrorists that nurdered American GI''s in Iraq. Oh, but that's forgivable says the Great Satan 'cause al-Qaeda is on the US payroll now!
OK minders - quit censoring my posts!
Wow. The heck did I just read from the 20 odd posts before mine? Yikes.
