Report: Ex-Gitmo detainee is not Bulgaria suicide bomber

Burgas airport security cameras caught the alleged terrorist wandering around a terminal minutes before he boarded a bus filled with tourists and allegedly blew himself up. Police are now trying to identify who he was with the help of DNA analysis. NBC's Martin Fletcher reports.

Updated at 3:15 p.m. ET: Former Guantanamo Bay detainee Mehdi Ghezali is not the suicide bomber who killed at least seven people and injured dozens on a bus full of Israeli tourists in Bulgaria, intelligence officials told NBC News on Thursday, debunking reports in Bulgarian media.

According to the officials, Swedish authorities have determined the suicide bomber was not Ghezali.

The Muslim Swede had been held at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba from 2002 to 2004, according to media reports picked up by The Times of Israel.

He previously studied at a Muslim religious school and mosque in Britain, and traveled to Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. He was released to Swedish custody in 2004, the Times reported. The Swedish government did not press charges, it said.

Bulgaria official: Suspected bomber carried fake Mich. license

Seven people, including five Israeli tourists, were killed Wednesday after a bomb exploded on a bus in Bulgaria. The suspected attacker was carrying a fake Michigan driver's license, officials say. TODAY's Natalie Morales reports.

Ghezali was also reportedly among 12 foreigners captured trying to cross into Afghanistan from Pakistan in 2009. He was accused of conspiring with al-Qaida in North Waziristan and returned to Sweden.

A Department of Defense list obtained by NBC News includes a man of the same name, born in Stockholm, Sweden, on July 5, 1979, and identified as inmate No.166, being released from Guantanamo Bay on July 8, 2004.

NBC's Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube contributed to this report.

As 150 Israeli tourists boarded buses to go to their hotels, a massive explosion killed at least six. Police don't yet have any answers, and nobody has claimed responsibility. NBC's Martin Fletcher reports.

?? Not that I supported Bush, but do you really think that that administration WANTED to let any of those murderers go? They only did it because of all the cry babies whining about their "right" to be free. Good call to those of you that were part of that band wagon. You don't need to respond because I'm sure that there is a logical excuse for letting murderers and terrorists go free.

Mehdi Ghezali was arrested in Punjab province by Pakistanis September 10,2009 (under Obama by the way) with two other Swedes and Obama let him go- originally atrrested in 2001 as a member of AQ- in Guantanamo Cuba from 2002-04- insufficient evidence -let go- went back to Sweden and partook in different AQ affiliated groups in Britain,Saudi Arabia (known of-prtoof). He was born July 5,1979 in Stockholm,Sweden (parents- a Finnish mother and an Algerian father)- later resided in Orebro,Sweden. The ID on him was issued to JAQUE FELIPE MARTIN. Swedish Sapo (security police will issue statement later regarding Mehdi Ghezali). In Bulgaria at this very moment are 100+ Swedish tourists at Sunny Beach- a stone throw off Burgas. Ghezali speaks native Swedish- easy to assimiliate. (blend in).

you guys don't seem to realize that a lot of the people there were perfectly innocent. And then they were brutally tortured and humiliated. Their lives were completely destroyed. The torture they endured turned them into psychopaths and criminals. It is not that uncommon for for someone like that to seek revenge after the fact. If anything we should have kept them in the US and kept an eye on them.

This same individual was jailed for theft in Portugal 8/1999- 6/2000. For background and the AQ people read http://wikileaks.ch/gitmo/prisoner/166.html -while at the site keep scrolling down - info that still today is of use- like another Swede AQ recruiter Yousef Fresh- Moroccan Nieem- background matters. By the way- Bush 43 released Ghezali to Swedish custody and Sweden never brought any charges against him.

Another "repatriation" which worked really well. If the "released terrorists" are not killing Americans or other NATO forces in Afghanistan or Iraq, they are blowing up innocent people in other countries.

Guess it is time to release that Cleric to the New Egyptian President (Muslim Brotherhood) per his "demand". I am so sure he will stick to preaching his religious beliefs after he is released.

What I love is that all of you are so busy blaming or defending President Bush or blaming or defending President Obama that it doesn't seem that you read the article. The article says that it was NOT former Guantanamo Bay detainee Mehdi Ghezali that detonated this suicide bomb!! Some of you are so busy reading headlines and skimming through articles looking to defend or vilify someone that the facts in the story have become irrelevant. It's truly sad and embarrasing how partisan we have become.

it used to be Iraq / Sadam / al qaida / Ben ladden / Taliban and they took them all out .. almost..

Let s turn to Iran now.. I wonder who s next?

Does Israel have something better to do than just accuse countries after countries they want US to take out for them! do they have anything better to do in Israel than Just War War War

Israel cannot take the whole world out so they can insure their existence! after all they are the chosen one thousands of years ago!

What a bunch of lames and this is the reason people should not put any stock in anything these people post ever....

First off, getting rid of the detainees will not close the base, it's an official military base.

Second, some of these people have been proven innocent of all wrongdoing. They were dissidents in their country who the government decided to get rid of by sending them to the US as terrorists. After they were proved innocent, their home countries refused to accept them back, so they are stuck. Can't go home, can't stay here.

If you were president, what would you do with these innocent people?

Same thing They cannot be sent back to their country because the people who sent them here are paying off he right people there and we cannot take them in the US

So these detainee's need to be appologized to for being locked away where they can not do harm? They were taken off the field of battle (in one form or another) because why? as in-human as it is- they need to be given a 1/2 trip home over the sea and feed to the fishes. In our world kindness should beget kindness but reality is dont turn your back to your enemy and dont give them a second chance to do what they know best - to kill you!

Here are two nice examples from the US government's OWN FILES. I suppose that you would have absolutely no problem with imprisoning these INNOCENT people indefinitely:

        1. "Mohammed Sadiq was rounded up in a raid on his settlement after a satellite phone and a list of Taliban-linked numbers were found belonging to his neighbour.

Repeated interrogations and a lie-detector test at Guantánamo showed that he had no knowledge of his neighbour’s links to the Taliban and 'did not know how to operate the phone'. He was released in September 2002.

        2. "Naqib Ullah was 14 when he was kidnapped at gunpoint, raped by a group of 11 men and put to work in the compound of the Taliban warlord Samoud Khan.

He was captured after three days in a US forces raid in December 2002, and shipped to Guantánamo two months later. His file describes him as a “kidnap victim and a forced conscript of a local warring tribe”. He was deemed innocent and released in January 2004."

Let's not forget how Bush Cheney started fake Iraq war to get Iraq oil, to feed no bid contracts to Cheney's failing Haliburton company, and most important to Bush, " want to be know as a war president because war presidents are remembered." which was told to his Air Force correspondent when first elected. She told how Bush/Cheney used old intel proven to have been false and debunked that was told to Bush Cheney that is was debunked. They chose to lie and use it and the result was the murder of thousands of our troops and troops from other countries. The wounding of thousands and thousands more and are dying because of the wounds suffered. Thousands of citizens killed and wounded and families fleeing and now in other countries losing everything. They when they finally capture and kill Saddam (who was contained and going no where before attck ) Bush and Cheney had NO plan on who would rule country, thus all the looting and rioting and chance for terrorists to come to to get all the arms abandoned because of Bush Brain. Bush Cheney war criminals that can't leave our country because they will be arrested and charged with war crimes.

Now Romney has hired many Bush Cheney advisors because lying into war and crashing the economy was so good for the country.

Starsailing: You still believe that childish propaganda BS. To this day there is still no oil pipeline to the US from Iraq so try again. If you remember it was a UN resolution to go after Saddam not an American one. Also the bulk of the money including the food for oil program went to France. It must be nice to have the memory of a goldfish on actually why Iraq was invaded but it certainly was not over oil.

Either you are ill informed or you can't do search on ...Bush lied U.S. into war. Bush Cheney gave old intel that was debunked as being false. Dems and repubs had been given false info for years and when checked out before 911 it was proved to be false. Bush Cheney pulled it up anyways and said it was true. Bush/Cheney/Rove outed CIA agent and all people who were in touch with that agent because the agents husband reported back to head quarters there was NO YELLOW CAKE AND NO CAKE PERSUED BY IRAQ! BUSH SR. CALLED THE PEOPLE WHO OUTED AGENT A TRAITOR!

The reason they were not put on trial in a civilian court was because they had ZERO evidence or it was all CIA chatter that some guy gave us this intel under torture. The biggest problem with torture is that they will say anything to get it to stop. They probably got the names of hundreds of innocent people that were just named stop them continuing the torture.

Crazy.. in this day of educated and enlightened populaces that so many are willingly indoctrinated with this type of religious fervor.. my opinion is that we are targeting the wrong enemy.. it is not the suicide bombers and fanatical soldiers that are the true enemy .. but rather the clerics and imams that espouse this hatred of infidels that continually send these poor weak minded souls to seek a path to heaven that does not exist anywhere but in the minds of countless fools that believe in religions that promote violence and hatred.

Time to hold these religious fanatics of hate and violence accountable for the destruction they coerce from their ranks..

There was never any proposal to close Gitmo and release the prisoners. Obama's proposal was to transfer them to a Supermax facility in Illinois. I didn't agree with that proposal and I don't support Obama, but I do believe that a person should have at least a passing acquaintance with the facts before spouting off.

How do you know if he was or was not interrogated with enhanced methods?

..Oh, he was interrogated by Bulgaria Officials?...or Israeli children...?

Mark, how do you know your wife doesn't sleep with goats? I mean we have all read her posts and her dissatisfaction of your manhood.

I'm looking for that proof too

Oh and to think all the liberal wuses wanted dear Obama to close Guantanamo detention.

Oh, the horror!! oh the torture!!

Well it's a good think he COULDN'T close it and it got new paint.

You were all told what would happen if these ass holes were released.

They were not brought there on a whim.

They were brought there for a reason.

Here is one of your reasons. (here's your sign)

Over 50 of these animals have went right back to business.

They need to rot in Gitmo.

Obama wanted to close gizmo and put these terrorist suspects in CIVILIAN SUPERMAX PRISONS, (creating jobs, btw), and try them in CIVILIAN COURT. You know, like the one that convicted Zacharias Moussaoui?

Gitmo is a huge waste of money, This is America we specialize in incarceration. You telling me we couldn't close GITMO and then lose the key in regular jail.

Viewer you can have your sign back. the one that reads 'I don't read, I let others tell me what the words mean thats how I make decisions'.

                      You can keep the sign.

We have Gitmo becuase we are legally bound to do so.

AND Americans do not want these animals on the mainland.

I have absolutely no idea what this sentence is supposed to mean. I don't think you do either.

I just pray this man didn't have water poured on him whilst in detention on the island of Cuba. Poor soul. We obviously owe him (RIP) and his family (Hello from America!) an apology.

What would he have been if he had grown up? A Doctor? A teacher? The amount of good he would have done will now be a mystery because we stole him from his family and forced him to do this to himself and others. The shame of the world is upon us.

I can't believe you guys are turning this into a partisan thing. This is all part of the plan... Al CIAda is so evil... we must take away all rights and freedoms from everyone so that you may all be safe! Fear the swedes! Fear the muslims, fear the Chinese and the Russians! Everyone's out to get you and the only way you'll ever be safe is to live in a 100% controlled Police State. You don't need freedom or liberty, you're much better off being "safe" from "terrorists". <face-palm>

Well the fact is YOU ALL MISSING THE WHOLE POINT HERE . Natenyahu blaming the Iranians and Hezbollah as always , one more tome you dumb jerk , Iran and Hezbollah are Shiites Muslims and Alqaida hates them more they hate us , Believe it or not ,, So all what Mr. Nataenyahu trying to do is start a war with Iran knowing that our Israeli's lovers ( Which that include all our law makers , Republicans and Democrats will scream to go and help Israel ) and hell going to break lose in that part of the world , I do not think anybody going to put up with Israel trying to mussel their way around 9 I know they are god of mighty ) But its not going to be easy and we do not need to go to war just to please this country that we do not get anything but headache from . Go ahead I am ready for all these Bible twisting Christians we got here to go crazy , but look at that Jewish law maker that destroyed the bible the other day . where were they to raise hell .

I'll simplify it for you: the Sunnis are evil and the Shiites are evil too. Only ones maybe not evil? Sufis and Ba'hais. The Sunnis and Shiites kill them.

THough I see the trouble that is coming and hope it is not for our sake (jobs, lives, home and hearth) I will trully be worried when the dome of the rock is gone and the temple is being rebuilt - until then, it is just humans doing what humans do -

Good thing we give these non-citizen terrorists rights. Otherwise they'd never be able to get back out and do stuff like this.

The founding principle of this country is that man is born with certain inalienable rights. The government can not "give" anyone rights. It can only take them away.
