Brits rally around Games after Romney's Olympic gaffe

GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney sparked a political firestorm during an interview with NBC's Brian Williams, in which he questioned whether London was ready for the Olympics. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

LONDON – The bells were ringing across a green and pleasant Britain on Friday morning to celebrate the start of the Summer Olympics.

From Big Ben to the rusty clanger in our old village school, the noise of the bells could be heard for miles.

The only other sound you could clearly hear above them was that of crunching metal – the sound of a politician slamming his campaign car into reverse.

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney came to the United Kingdom to launch an international charm offensive and ended up offending a nation.

TODAY's Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira discuss the much-anticipated London Olympics Opening Ceremony, including some of the top-secret details that have leaked.

On the face of it, his gently expressed doubts to NBC's Brian Williams about Britain's readiness to stage a successful Games were not particularly shocking.

Up until a few days ago, we'd been expressing doubts of our own.

Troops everywhere, long lines and moans: A very British Olympic Games
'Pain in the neck': London's Olympic lanes befuddle, frustrate motorists
Fortress London: UK protects Olympics with biggest security plan since WWII

But now that the Games are officially kicking off, it's party time – and the art of a politician is to judge the mood of the public. And on this Romney – as we say over here – dropped a clanger all of his own.

"Mitt the Twit" screamed the headline in the popular tabloid The Sun. "Who invited party-pooper Romney?" asked the Daily Mail.

Suddenly, Romney-bashing became a new gold-medal event.

At a concert in London's Hyde Park, Mayor Boris Johnson threw Romney's comments right back at him like an Olympic shotput: "There's a guy called Mitt Romney who wants to know if we are ready," he asked the 60,000-strong crowd.

To a man, woman and child they shouted back, "Yes we are."

From Wimbledon to Wembley Stadium to The Dome, a look at the venues for the 2012 London Olympic Games.

British Prime Minister David Cameron was also quick to jump to the country's defense, with a pointed comment sharper than a javelin: "We are holding an Olympic Games in one off the busiest, most active cities in the world. Of course it's easier if you hold an Olympic Games in the middle of nowhere."

"Nowhere," of course, meant Salt Lake City. Romney organized the 2002 Winter Olympics there.

There were other gaffes: Seemingly forgetting the Labour Party leader Ed Milliband's name and calling him – in a desperate, odd-sounding ad-lib – "Mr. Leader." Spilling the beans about a private meeting he'd had with the ultra-secretive boss of MI6, the British foreign intelligence service. That's one stop short of telling the Russians we're still spying on them.

Oh dear. It's all so different from the other presidential hopeful who visited Britain four years ago. On that occasion there was an air of excitement as Barack Obama charmed his way across London, not putting a foot wrong.

On this one, it feels like someone has tied Romney's shoelaces together.

Candidate Mitt Romney, who was slammed by the British media for comments he made about London's preparedness for the Olympics, now says that "after being here a couple days …  I'm absolutely convinced that the people here are ready for the Games."

But like all good politicians he bounced back. On NBC's TODAY on Friday morning he was gracious and warm in his support of the London Olympics – sticking to the script this time.

He can also take comfort in knowing that back home, there are many who will like him even more, just because the Brits like him less.

Ah yes, we may have a special relationship – an "Anglo-Saxon" heritage, as a Romney adviser curiously termed it before the visit. But that doesn't mean we can't throw the pots and pans at each other from time to time.

A diverse community in East London will welcome the world to Britain for the 2012 Olympic Games. Meet residents and hear how they feel about having a huge, world stage in their backyard.

I wonder if the Brits will respond like Bill O'Reilly and friends did to the French....stop buying American products, boycott American businesses and quit traveling to the USA? Or will they give money to an Obama SuperPAC in protest to Romeny?

Linda, I don't know if you are trying to make this into something the brits did when clearly its about Romney opening his big mouth trying to sound bigger and better then the brits regarding Olympic set up. Thats the probelm with this guy - he thinks he is better and above everyone. A little sensory and common sense would be nice if you are running to become POTUS. Great first step into foriegn affairs though buddy.

Mitt Romney is not a very intelligent man but typical of what the Republicans want for the office of president. A yes man that will do as the main bosses want. As Grover Norquist says...all they need is a Republican Senate, a Republican House, and someone to hold the pen. Meaning the president to him is immaterial as long as he controls him. Looks like Romney is the new village idiot to replace G W Bush.

Vote Democrat in 2012 if you value what you have today because Romney and the Republicans want to give the wealth more tax cuts and pass the burden of supporting the government on to the middle class workers.

I wish we could go back to world where a politician could open his mouth and sneeze without making headlines.

I really don't think Romney was trying to insult the entire UK, maybe he was just trying to emphasize that this is the most difficult Olympics in history from a security point of view, and that no-one or nothing could be totally ready.

That being said, you gotta love how Flipper changed his mind the very next day. LMAFO

Romney is former chairperson of the Olympic games, (he saved the games from collapse a few years ago, by using his money and talent at no pay); the personnel attacks on both major candidates must stop, we are in the beginnings of a world wide depression, let us pick the best person for the job, of trying to dig out of a hell of a mess, brought on by both party's over many years.

This sounds like a reach to me. His comments were not in any way a gaff.

And given his experience running an Olympics, I'd say that makes him uniquely qualified to have an opinion.

The comments by the British on the other hand were quite insulting. Salt-Lake City = Middle of nowhere?

Why dont you post one reputable source in which Obama specifically states he doesn't mind if foreign leaders insult our country. Additionally, what specifically should OBAMA do in this case? Do we cut off all of our trade with the UK?

Romney (if he is any kind of a leader "IF"), should be able to accept constructive criticism.

@gotnorice - so you want Obama to give David Cameron a call, tell him to knock off the insults, and pull Romney's chestnuts out of the fire? That's priceless! Romney said it, he can own it.

@arthur66 - a Baker scholar? So what? Clinton was a Rhodes scholar and Republicans still didn't like him. Besides, having good marks in school is no guarantee you won't be socially inept - ask any nerd about that. And after 8 years of a pi$$-poor US reputation that has taken a while to undo, we don't need to go back there, especially in the midst of a global economic crisis.

But the Brits should just relax - in a week or two, I'm sure Romney will be telling all of us "I never said that." Problem solved.

News outlets have an unbelievably powerful effect on its readers. This has become an increasing phenomenon in the digital age.

Or maybe it's the other way around. News outlets just give their readers what they want to hear. Unfortunately, since modern-day America is so divisive and partisan, it is likely that truly neutral news agencies are becoming rarer.

I admit that Fox is extremely biased to the right, but make no mistake, NBC News is very much biased to the left. When was the last time you saw a headline putting the word 'gaffe' or 'mistake' in the same line as 'Obama'? Obama is far from perfect, and their is a long list of stupid remarks that he has made (along with everyone else in this world). Typically, NBC news only mentions Obama's mistakes after Obama defends himself, claiming the mistaken line was taken out of context or something.

Anyhow, this was a dumb line by Romney. Maybe he should follow Obama's lead and kiss everyone's ass on the foreign stage, rather than telling it as it actually is. Obama is all about 'hopes' and 'dreams' and 'optimism'. In reality, he has done nothing.

Romney is a business-man. He is very much a realist. Unfortunately, those types typically don't get far in politics. This story is an example of why that is so.

Just out of curiosity, why are high government officials of the United Kingdom, Israel and Poland meeting with a private citizen of the U.S., who is no more than a political candidate, and a not-formally-nominated one at that?

And what, pray tell, is a private citizen of the U.S. doing having a "private meeting" with anyone from MI6, let alone the head of the foreign intelligence service of another country?

It makes absolutely no sense to me that they are even granting Mr. Romney an audience.

Diplomacy has a place in international as well as national politics and clearly, Mitt has no feel for the art.

I love how the fawning, Obama-pompom-shaking media try to compare candidate Obama's trip four years ago to Romney's trip, saying how BamBam charmed absolutely everyone in Great Britain and didn't say or make any "gaffes." Considering that every word he said was probably carefully and minutely scripted, that's no surprise. Of course, BamBam could have shoved the Queen of England into a mud puddle and the press would have said he was being "playful." It's incredibly easier to run for office when the liberal media will laugh off or completely ignore your mistakes/gaffes/ignorance than it is to run for office with the media poised to pounce every time you sneeze.

How can I give sources for doing nothing? That wasn't a very bright comment, think before you write...

Truth be told, he has accomplished somewhat. He has done a good job targeting Al Qaida (although he has furthered the causes of other hardline Muslims, such as the Brotherhood). He has also ensured that the economy didn't fall off a cliff (although that was mostly the work of Bush).

But fact is, how much better are we today than in 2009 when he took office? Economically (which I place the most importance on), we aren't any better. Economic data can be manipulated to show we are better off, but I really don't believe we are, or that we are on a course of improvement. Even if you think there are factors outside his control, ultimately, as POTUS, Obama must take responsibility for that.

Mitt told them the truth, a truth which they themselves had been trumpeting but, coming from a foreigner, it was over the top. Hopefully the Brits will get their crap together and no one will be hurt but you do have to wonder about a 'security force' that doesn't show up, transportation unions going on strike at this time and missile defense units on top of apartment buildings. Let the games begin, indeed.

Romney is not polished, he isn't a very good politican at all. He needs to tell people what they want to hear, ooze charm over substance and then the people can rely on him, they'll know he's a 'leader' because he's 'likeable.'

@against union thievery - if someone told you that 2+2=5, and you later found out it was wasn't true, would you keep proclaiming that 2+2=5? I don't think so. So why do you and others keep repeating Obama stories that have been debunked? Don't you get embarrassed, repeating idiotic and untrue talking points? Here are some facts so you don't have to spread untruths any more (I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt since I believe that anyone who learns that something isn't correct will stop repeating it. But I could be wrong.)

1. Obama and Churchill bust: the bust was on loan. It wasn't a gift. The Brits loaned it to Bush after the 9/11 attacks. He had it in the Oval office during his tenure. Obama didn't send it back out of the clear blue sky. He was asked if he wanted to keep it as a loan. He said no thanks since he wanted a bust of Abraham Lincoln in his Oval Office. I could see being upset if it was a gift - sending back a gift would be tacky. But that wasn't the case - he simply didn't extend the loan. Besides, I'll bet anything that if the Brits had made the original loan to Obama, people would be hopping up and down if he accepted, wondering why a bust of an American statesman wasn't good enough for him.

2. Obama did not give the Queen an iPod with his speeches. On their visit, the Obamas presented the Queen with a video iPod loaded with videos and photos of her previous 2007 visit to the US, and some American show tunes. The Queen's a big fan of Rogers and Hammerstein, hence the show tunes. Hence the other gift they gave her: a rare songbook signed by Richard Rogers. But you never hear about that part of the gift, do you? By the way, I found this on an Australian newspaper - I figured something outside the US might be a little more impartial.

3. Michelle didn't "pat the Queen." Snopes.com (which is pretty well researched) has this to say about that: "The Queen did embrace Michelle Obama on a subsequent meeting, though, an act that was considered a departure from appropriate protocol on the Queen's part. An eyewitness to that event said: 'There was a bit of a bottleneck as all of the leaders filed out so the Queen started chatting to Michelle Obama. She appeared to look up at her and make a comment about how tall she was. As she did, she put her arm around Mrs. Obama and rested her gloved hand on the small of her back. Almost simultaneously, Mrs. Obama put her arm around the Queen's shoulders rather more firmly. The pair then looked at their feet and appeared to be discussing their shoes. The Queen then dropped her arm and, a few seconds later, Michelle did the same. The entire exchange lasted around eight to ten seconds but was absolutely extraordinary.' This occurrence was noted as the first time in the 57 years of her reign that Elizabeth II had performed such a gesture."

So there are the facts that I could research quite easily. The next time, you can look things up yourself, assuming you'd like to save yourself the embarrassment of repeating that 2+2=5.

Wishfully thinking but too nahib. NBC and the Obama PR is making a big deal about it for political gain. They knew they wasn't ready, but they are too arrogant to admit. You like most Obama worshipers only repeat the same , but they have not idea about what is the truth.

"London (CNN) -- With just days to go before the Olympic
Games open in London, questions over the provision of security guards for the
event are dominating the British media.

Thousands of team officials and
athletes are arriving this week, and throngs of visitors are expected to follow.
But should they be worried?

The security concerns were
triggered last week when it emerged that private security contractor G4S, which
was supposed to have provided 10,400 guards for the Olympics and Paralympics,
would not be able to deliver.

Its failure to recruit, train and
vet enough staff in time led the government to announce last week that it was
deploying an extra 3,500 troops to cover the shortfall.

G4S said it has only about 4,000
guards trained and ready, although it hopes to have 7,000 fully accredited by
the time the Games begin on July 27".

Winker - Britain even admitted to having security problems so in my opinion, it showed care and concern for Romney to question the safety of the athletes. Looks like the media in other countries does a great job at causing chaos as well as they do here.

Is it a "gaffe" if you really believe it, and wish to make known that you believe it - you know, so that, just in case, you get "I told you so" dibs.

That's what diplomacy is all about, right - showing superiority over your friends?

        #1.61 - Fri Jul 27, 2012 4:26 PM EDT

Really? Romney's comments about the Olympics pissed off the WHOLE world and now we're going to war with them???

I think it's more your messiah who doesn't follow the customs and protocols of his own country.

You are absolute proof that liberalism is a mental disorder!

@Krissy519 - I found that while I was researching, too. It was on a number of right-wing sites. But I didn't include it because I found more sites debunking where you got that info. And as I said, the info I included was from an Australian newspaper since they don't have an ax to grind whereas any left- or right-wing US site certainly would. And, the info from the Australian paper was corroborated by Snopes.com - another site without an ax to grind. So I really don't think your info is accurate, any more than the original omission of videos, photos and show tunes was accurate.

Mittwit......who let his dumb a$$ loose over there in Britain? Isn't it bad enough we have to hear that clown here in the States? At least he's sticking to what he knows best......being an insufferable idiot! Oh well, at least Mr. Dumb and Mrs. Even More Dumb can look forward to their dressage horse winning a medal. The horse is smarter than the Romneys combined.

The art of being a good public speaker is to know your audience and to know your subject(s). That would include knowing the appropriate titles and names of people relevant to the subject at hand, having a concise, well thought out speech and a solid conclusion that wraps everything together in a nice, neat little package. Too bad Romney never learned this lesson. He may be good at acquiring money but his mind is a vast wasteland. On a personal note......thank you Mr. Eddy. All these years later, I haven't forgotten.

What is funny is that MSN said that the Olympics is where Romney was going to shine on this international tour. It was a soft ball, under hand pitched to him, and Mittens did what Romney does with those, swung so hard he misses completely. One Romney apologist above said that his experience running the Olympics gives him a unique perspective and he wanted to share it. Common sense says that you don't insult your biggest ally, enraging an entire country, while the whole point of your trip is to show off your foreign relations skills while running for POTUS.

What scares me is that this fool actually has a chance of getting elected. If this is Romney showing his foreign policy skills with friendly topics with our biggest ally, what happens when he has to negotiate serious matters with countries considered enemies, that are not so friendly? I will tell you. Its called the Iran war, and it is three time as expensive as the Iraq and Afghanistan wars combined and will cost the lives of way more American soldiers.

        Golly, poor Mittens ....

The whole Olympics thing wasn't really his fault- I think it went down this way-

Mrs. Mittens was So excited about her horse going off to the Olympics that she forgot to tell the housekeeper to tell the downstairs maid to tell the upstairs maid to pack hubby's MAGIC UNDERWEAR for the interview.

So there he was, without his protective underwear, being FORCED to speak ad lib- all that stupidity just SPEWING out of his mouth, and no talisman to prevent it.

I guess with his offshore millions, the RNC didn't think they needed to take him shopping, as they did for Palin- boy, were they wrong, and now poor Mittens is suffering the consequences.

Memo to the RNC: BUY more magic underwear!!!!

Red Virginia, you are totally right. The economy is the main issue of this election and will be my #1 reason for voting for a candidate that has a plan to add 1 million jobs in the US. Considering the choice is between that plan, and his opponents plan which adds as many as 200, not 200,000 but 200 US jobs in his economic plan. Obamas Jobs act vs Ryans Keystone pipeline. Unless of course you live in a state where defense contracts make up a huge percentage of the workforce, like Virginia, it makes no sense to vote for Romney.

Keystone pipe line will only provide about 5,000 temporary short term jobs but could cause a long term water pollution problem. Yeah, we want less water! We want less water! Now there is a chant for election!

Saxon, ROMNEY did not "save" the Salt Lake City Olympics. One of his much despised "government bail outs" did!

            #1.71 - Sat Jul 28, 2012 4:24 PM EDT

Larry, Romney's a Baker scholar and has both a JD & MBA degree from Harvard.

Classic case of an "Idiot Savant", someone who is a genius in one area and a fool in another. I have no doubts about Romney's business skill in making lots of money, even when he drives a business to bankruptcy. I also don't doubt Romney's legal skills in finding loopholes to cut his taxes and raid pension funds for his own profit. But when it comes to matters of Etiquette, Tact, and Diplomacy, well, that's where the "Idiot" part comes in.

Romney is former chairperson of the Olympic games, (he saved the games from collapse a few years ago, by using his money and talent at no pay)

Not any of his own money, he used Olympic funds to hire a lobbyest to get several hundred million dollars from the Federal Government. The Bush administration and a Congress dominated by fellow Republicans were all to happy to oblige, deficits be damned.

Just out of curiosity, why are high government officials of the United Kingdom, Israel and Poland meeting with a private citizen of the U.S., who is no more than a political candidate, and a not-formally-nominated one at that?

They're not restricted to meeting only other officials, there is nothing preventing them from meeting with any private citizen if they choose. The real question should be "why did they choose to meet with Romney?"

And what, pray tell, is a private citizen of the U.S. doing having a "private meeting" with anyone from MI6, let alone the head of the foreign intelligence service of another country?

Now that is a very good question. Doubtful that he had any espionage secrets to reveal, or any connections to the spy business. But maybe he was hoping they had something on Obama - if so, he was no doubt disappointed and had wasted his (and their) time.

What is becoming more obvious, is that the rest of the world watches, and is effected by, the happenings here in the states. Like that Egyptian protester who didn't realize MoonBat Bachmann was insane and actually believed her statements. There are gullible people everywhere. Here the Brits prove that there are also sharp people everywhere.

Oh dear. It's all so different from the other presidential hopeful who visited Britain four years ago. On that occasion there was an air of excitement as Barack Obama charmed his way across London, not putting a foot wrong.

On this one, it feels like someone has tied Romney's shoelaces together.

I couldn't have said it better myself and for those of you commenting that as a "Leader" he was fine to say what he did. He's not a leader of ANYTHING at the moment. He's a politician and he's a tourist and he should learn to just keep his trap shut. Didn't we all learn at an early age, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all???

We at least have an understanding that Romney has a religion, unlike Obama who seems to don the 'Christian' mantle when it suits his political agenda. So sorry, Obama is a fraud and as to being a clown, well better a clown than a fake, fraud and downright disasterous 'charming' inept who always needs 'excuses' for his actions. Blame Bush, ATM's, tsunamis and race and anything and everything for Obama's ineptitude and downright mendacity.

Obama has no way that he can win re-election and you all know that, there is an undercurrent against him for what he has done that people are not even talking they are simply waiting to throw him out just like carter and they thought it was going to be close them too. This election will not even be close Romeny will WIN in major numbers. Thats is simply the truth say whatever you want but that is truth. Every poll shows them neck and neck and they are ALL at least 10-15 percent more dems in each poll and done by libs groupps and obama still cant win it lol, obama unemployed in Nov like the millions he has destroyed

I too have an understanding that the idiot has a religion. Have you ever delved into exactly what the Mormons believe? It ain't all about tracing one's ancestors and loving your fellow man. And if the fellow man happens to be black, well that's a whole other thing altogether as far as those Mormons are concerned. The actuall, truly believe that black people are marked by the curse of Cain. Can you believe that? Ohh, forgot for a moment to whom I was replying. Of course you can believe that. I'm not a big believer in organized religion and it is partially due to crap like what the Mormons believe (sacred underwear--for the life of me, I just don't know why Fruit of the Loom hasn't run with THAT.) So yeah, he has a religion alright. To some people Voodoo is a religion as well. The Moonies, remember them? Yep, another religion. Some would actually say that was a cult but, hey, it's all semantics. I say tomahto, you say tomayto. Seems like any old thing can be a religion. Doesn't make it right, does it?

Maybe he needs to practice polygamy, like his grandfather and the founder of Mormonism, in order to banish the "goofball" demons that even his sons say he is afflicted with....

Well, except that it wasn't out of context-- I listened to the entire speech. But that's okay-- I don't want to baffle you all with too many facts. You keep getting your news from Jon Stewart-- (I can't believe someone actually quotes him as a legitimate source-- wow)

And I don't think Romney is hanging his campaign on that particular lovely from President Obama-- but whatever. For the record, I can't stand Romney-- but given my choice of bad and worse, I'll take bad and pull the lever for Romney.

And I think (the comedian) Jon Stewart's hysterical-- I love how he took Brian Ross and ABC News to task for their ridiculous (mistake)reporting of the Aurora shooter as being a member of the Tea Party.

There was no gaffe. Romney as a true leader was telling it like it is. When a private security company promises 10,000 personnel and only comes up with half that forcing the British government to bring in soldiers seems like Romney did what a true leader does...identify to problem to be able to fix it.

Kevster it's considered bad manners to go into someone's house as a guest & insult them about their house. As someone wanting to be president & going on a trip to show his ability to manage foreign policy he just insulted one our our best allies.

                          (1) don't publicly insult the country you are visiting.

                          (2) rememebr the names of opposition leaders you are referring to. His name is not Mr Leader.

                          (3) when meeting with the UK secret service protocol tells you not to announce it publicly.

My understanding is that Mr. Romney was speaking with Brian Wiliams- not the BBC, or British media. Brian Williams, an American interviewer, asked him what he thought,

and Mr. Romney told him. So what? I should hope the British are lucid enough to realize that security is a major concern, no matter how well they've planned.

So, MCAmom, he would've said something different if it had been the BBC? He figures that Brit can't read American papers....., or if they do, it doesn't matter what he says to the American press ???

I guess you're right about Mitt's equivocation. He certainly didn't say anything quit so condescendingly snobbish to Piers Morgan, who at least sounds British.

It was another unforced error. Foreign policy requires a little tact. All Romney had to do on his photo-op tour is say that he loves England, London is beautiful, and the Olympics are going to be great. I am terrified by what he'll say in Poland and Israel.

I find it astounding that Romney had to lie about such a simple thing as not knowing when his wife's horse was going to be performing. Was he that afraid of seeming out of touch that he had to lie and act like he didn't care about his wife's horse? If he lies to easily about such minor things, I just wonder what else he lies about.

I could never support the Republicans in the state they are in. If they really went back to real values they once had I could here and there be one their side. As they are now I just can't. I was brought up with the idea that is you are good and right .. you don't have to lie and attack people.

Do I hate Mit Romney? No I don't. Am I scared of Mit Romney? No I am not. I think he's probably a decent guy. If he wins .. He will disappoint the far right. I looked at his record as governor. Romney-care says it all. He's not an evil man.

Romney is not "running for the presidency", the GOP is "running AWAY from the presidency."

Why else would they run the guy who lost the primary in the previous election???

Romney wanted the ticket to get national. He got the ticket, because NOBODY else wanted it.... Santorum? Bachman? Perry? Cain???

I think there is some truth in what you say. WE had the same thing happen here in Canada. The conservative Brian Mulroney admin left Canada in shreds. We even had the IMF eyeballing us. The Liberals swept to power and with much pain to all here .. fixed the problems. Now we have another conservative government that is spending like drunken sailors again.

Republicans know they can't fix the problems. Anyone that has ever studdied economics knows we can't turn on a dime here and change the system without crashing the whole system.

Republican tea people are looking for simple talking point solutions to complex problems.

Should Mit win .. he will be in the same position as Obama is now. He will have to do the same things as Obama.

The gop knows they have painted themselves into a corner. They need the Democrates to fix things ... so they can come back into power and resume the cream sucking.

Romney the strawman could not possibly win the election because of anything to do with leadership qualities or a good plan for the country. However, republicans have put in place the Citizens United plan whereupon foreigners can buy the republican candidate they want through off shore accounts and tricky ways of accounting. Republicans also are putting in place voter suppression laws preventing the elderly, the young, and the poor and middle class who cannot afford getting new ID or have no access to get ID because of republican constructed laws. In Pennsylvania repubs removed over 700,000 voters from voting because they now lack the ID to vote. Repubs in Penn. said mission accomplished, voter ID will give Romney the election.

So yes the strawman Romney is a "NOWHERE MAN" but beware of republicans rigging the elections once more.

Yeah, I am of Anglo-Saxon descent and I found Romknownothing's comment offensive. I am a proud citizen of the USA- a mixture of many cultures, races, ethnic groups, and ideas. I find Romney's rhetoric disgusting.

I am NOT living in Britain in AD 500, but I am sure that Romney wouldn't care if my fair skinned self (and most Americans) returned to that time- living in huts, producing more children than can be fed properly, starving if the crops fail, fearful of all strangers, and dying for lack of health care -as long as he could be "King."

As my people said when they came to America 400 years ago from England- "fcuk the King"

No one needs to smear Romney-he has inserted his own foot in his own mouth. On the other hand please listen to the unedited speech that Obama gave. He said that bridges, roads and infrastructure have been paid for by everyone and that "you didn't build that" on your own. That is what makes the US so great--we all pitched in to make our country better. We all prosper from having our neighbors educated, from having interstate highways and our wonderful men and woman who sacrifice their lives to protect us all. Fox news and Mitt are completely lying about what the president said. They even edited the speech.

"You really wanna hang your entire campaign on a willful, out of context misunderstanding?" [Jon Stewart] asked the Mitt Romney campaign.

Everything else said, IS England ready for the Olympics? Hope so. One more thing, I thought the Olympics was suppose to be non-political, so why are all nations required to dip their flag when they pass the Queen? Answer please.

They don't HAVE to dip their flags at the Queen, dipping the flag is a courtesy; she's head of state for the United Kingdom.

According t OUR LAWS dipping OUR flag would be illegal. I hope they DON'T do it but then again we have a president that bows, kisses rings and lord knows what else but...

If our laws still have any meaning what so ever ... we ought to walk on by...

ScorpionsFan - All fine and dandy, but nobody dipped their flag to the President of the United States the last time the Olympics was in this country?????

As I have stated before, all of our gov is over educated dumb asses.

we need all of them out of office and blue collar workers in office that know what this country really needs and not some stupid over educated dumb asses report.

Both Romney and Obuma are so stupid our country is doomed to fail now for sure.

Didn't we try the average, mediocre, nothing special, blue collar guy with George W. Bush? I want our leaders to be a lot smarter and better educated than I am.

Bush was another over educated dip shiiit.

And as far as smart goes there are a lot of well educated blue collar workers out there that know what we need in this country.

Fox fake news is good for those who want to be told what they already believe. That way, they don't have to think and make intelligent judgments, a higher level thinking skill. The Fox/Limbaugh/O'Reilly crowd: dumb as sin, closed minded, regressive, hateful, and paranoid of anything that doesn't fit into their tiny, little world!

Mr. Romney didn't have to cross the Atlantic Ocean to make a fool of himself. He could have stayed home and done it.

Is there a spare three-pointed hat with bells? Romney needs a souvenir.

                                                To Eric of Montreal

"I like the superPAc idea however. I live in Canada and what goes on in the USA impacts what happens here. That gives me a vested interest in American politics.

Can anyone clue me into my abilities to donate money to the party I feel is the less harmful of the two."

Absolutely - with our recent Supreme Court decision, our politicians are completely for sale. You may have to contribute as a corporation though, people are limited in what they can contribute, but as 'corporations are people' too, they have unlimited potential to buy votes in the US. Its a great system.

It's illegal for foreign corporations to donate, even to SuperPacs, but there is no way to monitor or enforce the laws. So enjoy.

I have to defend Romney on this one (I voted for Bush first time out and then for Obama) . I think his comments were honest and forthright. Even the British have voiced some concern about the security of the Olympic games after the prime contractor for security was unable to provide any where near the number of security personnel that were promised. I only saw the snippets that were on broadcast TV, maybe there is a longer version that shows other comments, but the comments that I saw and heard seemed to be reasonable comments about the security situation. I haven't defended Romney before this time, but in all fairness I have to defend him now.

He was only reacting to the brits mistake on security that they messed up...big deal IMO..but the media is grasping at straws on anything these days. But citizen it will get worse, I guarantee. Obamas truth brigade in Va. is what is coming next...if you disagree with Obama you are flat out racist as evidenced by a speech yesterday, he has to go after the black vote big time and the only to get it is pull the race card.
