LONDON -- The 2012 Olympics may claim to be the first 'green' Summer Games, but the city’s cyclists have been holding a number of protests -- including one on Friday at which more than 100 people were arrested -- claiming that the authorities appear to think they “don’t exist” or “don’t matter.”
Part of a major commuter route for cyclists down the east side of London -- a path along the River Lea -- has been closed for security reasons because it runs close to the Olympic Park.
And cyclists are also not allowed to use many of the Olympic Lanes set up for officials, athletes and others involved in the Games.
According to the U.K., London is "the first Summer Host City to embed sustainability into its planning from the very start" and it is hoped the Games will "encourage more sustainable living" across the whole of the U.K.
Ruth-Anna Macqueen, 28, a hospital doctor, has been involved in three protests over the closure of the Lea path on the last three Sundays and another is planned for this Sunday.
Macqueen said the path had been closed since the beginning of July, weeks before the start of the Games, and would remain so until September.
'It's on, Let's Go:' The Games have begun
The diversion, Macqueen said, took cyclists onto a busy main road and a notorious roundabout where two cyclists were killed in one month last year.
“Basically people are left with the option of staying on your bike and taking your life in your hands or getting back in your car or public transport,” she said. “It kind of seems to be all part of the ignorance and arrogance by the people at the top -- that either cyclists don’t exist, don’t matter or are not worth any consideration.”
“You can’t imagine them closing a busy road with no consultation and no warning,” she added, saying the idea that London 2012 was the first green Games felt like “a bit of a joke.”
Macqueen added that preventing cyclists from using some Olympic lanes was “ludicrous.”
'Critical Mass', 'Swarm' protests
During Friday's opening ceremony, an amateur cycling club tried to pedal their way through the security cordon around the Olympic Park.
The cyclists were identified as members of a monthly cycling event called "Critical Mass" that normally passes through the area, but police had prohibited them from cycling there on Friday evening.

More than 100 people were arrested on suspicion of breaching protest conditions and causing a public nuisance, Scotland Yard said Saturday.
Officers scuffled with several pro-cycling activists as dozens of cyclists were blocked by police vans from proceeding, Scotland Yard said. No serious injuring were reported.
Elisabeth Anderson, 38, of Camden, took part in another protest Wednesday night by the “London Bike Swarm” over the Olympic lanes issue.
The “swarm” turned out to be about 14 cyclists and only six actually defied the authorities to ride in the lanes, until they were stopped by police.
“It’s a strange situation. Cyclists are being thought of as an afterthought,” she said. “There could have been a really positive move to push cycling, they could have encouraged officials and others involved in the Games to cycle as well.”

Christian Wolmar, transport analyst and author, agreed the authorities had not done enough to promote cycling.
“The whole thing is completely hypocritical; cycling is just another example of that,” he said. “Cyclists are really considered a bit of a bother, rather than part of the solution.”

“It fits in with the whole hypocrisy of the Games – sponsored by Coca-Cola and McDonald's even while it’s supposed to be about sport and healthy living,” he added.
A spokesman for Transport for London said cyclists could use some Olympic lanes, but added that it would not be safe for cyclists to use those lanes which are in the middle of the road, rather than next to the sidewalk.
“We’ve invested an awful lot of time and money to make it safer for cyclists,” he said.
A spokeswoman for London 2012 organizer LOCOG told NBCNews.com that the issue was "more one for Transport for London. I’m not sure it’s something we’d comment on.”

Cyclists are a bunch of fruitcakes. Probably stems from sitting on their arses and cutting off blood to the nether regions.
causing a public nuisance
And people think we're not free here in America.
Ahhhhhh.....we're not. Ask the CEO of Chick-fil-a.
the whole green movement and the libs are a joke, so what else is new??
I began reading this article with the position that for support of the Olympic Games and safety of those involved, cyclists should be willing to temporarily sacrifice their usual commuting route.
However, I've changed my mind and believe the cyclists have a valid point that given this distinct opportunity, London chooses not to promote cycling, but soda and fast food instead.
The irony is rich.
It sounds like they are complaining for the sake of complaining. Closing roads and paths for security reasons has nothing to do with "not being green." These cyclists sound a bit sanctimonious, if anything. Guess what -- NOT everything is about you, even if you have no carbon footprint!
My son lives in London. He was riding his bike yesterday evening and came across a group of cyclists. He joined in until he saw them behaving really badly. They intentionally went in front of buses, trucks and a taxi. They disregarded traffic lights. He quickly left them. When I read the article on the cyclists I knew it had to be the same group that made trouble. There are ways to protest. Bad behavior which could endanger others isn't the way to protest.
Being Green doesn't really do anything except make the libaturds feel good about themselves.
And seperate the people from their money.....which is what it's about in the first place.
Comrades,
Let us boycott the Olympic games. All of this "competition" and "individual achievement" makes me want to throw up. I hate them I tell you. The worst part is the medal ceremonies with the "individual winners" elevated above everyone else. What, is this some kind of Kapitalistic propaganda???? They didn't win that, "somebody else made that happen!" They didn't build the gyms, pools and the running tracks. They merely benefited from what we have built for them. It's time to end this talk of "individual achievement". Dear Leader should go immediately to London and attend each and every ceremony and point out that "Somebody else made that happen!" If something isn't done soon, there's no telling what might happen.
There are always fringe lunatic groups looking for sympathy because they imagine their rights have been infringed. Security trumps cycling every time.
The whole "green" movement is a joke. Unfortunately a costly one that is hurting people a lot more than inconveniencing some goofy bikers.
The whole green movement is a big joke!......God people are so stupid!
Wouldn't a better protest be to all ride the recommended route during rush hour? I feel that would prove the dangers of the alternate routes while further congesting traffic and thus drawing more attention without breaking any rules. No pictures or video make for a relatively uninteresting story compared to what it could be.
What does Bonehead Boris have to say?? Keep a stiff upper lip or just keep a stiffy.
I have received moremore middle fingers from cyclists than auto drivers. Just because you have the right of way, doesn't mean you can ignore your surroundings. I don't demand the right of way, I try to work with the situation, its a called self protection. You may be right, dead right on a slab in the morgue. Cyclists, as a group, are very sanctimonious, and to them, that little bike lane relieves them of all common sense, at times. A lot like the attitude of the tree huggers..
Yep!
Pretty much nailed it.
This is nothing more than a bunches of cry babies. do they think they shouldn't be put out becasue they want to ride thier bikes. what about the walkers nd the cars that normally use the roads near the center they are bloked out too. as far a Green goes the entire concept is a joke. I n many case being Green means a much higher price to pay for everything and the behind the scenes cost to produce so called Green items can be double of a regular item. handling and transportation cost means that many workers are working longer hours burning more electricity and the Green vehicles use more fuel which in the long run offsets the Green effect. The cyclist think that riding makes them healthier and it doesn't. it gives the mind the feeling of euphoria but that is all that it is. No matter what you do your average life span is going to be 75 years. my wife was an avid exerciser etc. becasue of teh extra strain on her body she has had to have two hip replacements and may soon need knee replacements. if she had just don't normal thing all of her life most likely she would not need all these operation. Instead of listening to all of this health nonsense it wuod be better to just apply the everyday standard common sense.
For example,my grandfather for breakfast every day of the 15 years i knew him ate 6 eggs and 1/2 a pound of bacon with bread and butter. I guess it finally killed him he died when he was 102. he had bacon and eggs for breakfast tht day. I guess maybe he shouldn't have! People just use some common sense instead of gettting tied into all this BS that takes away from the real pleasures of life.
It is long past time that we ended the Olympic games. Way too much burden on the taxpayers of the host country. It is ludicrous that we even need these games anymore. STUPID WASTE OF MONEY.
????
"Occupy London" bunch in a snit? They shoulda watched the opening ceremonies......like it was was written by one of Obama's fellow travellers.
Normally, I am a huge sports fan and really enjoy the competition of the Olympics. You are right. After about five minutes of the opening ceremonies, I turned the channel. It just put a real damper on the games. As someone pointed out, most opening ceremonies have a fun, almost Las Vegas atmosphere. This one is dominated by PC and liberal puke.
Same as we would get over here in the US.Substitute any minority for bicyclists, same story, waaaah. It'll be over soon
Bikers are some of the most irritating people there are. The attitude is that they have just as much right to the road as the cars. While they are right, they are dead right. Stupid, too. Where I live, we have bikers riding on two lane curvy mountain roads. When they go around a curve, you can’t see them. They rarely wear bright clothing. When they climb uphill, traffic comes to crawl because you can’t pass. Many bikers would refuse to pull over when they reach a part of the road which is adjacent to a big parking lot, even though they don’t have to slow down at all. About once a year, a biker would be run over on these roads. Do I feel bad for them? No.
"Sometimes it s difficult to be inconvenienced, but we want to make sure everyone is safe and it may cause you to change your normal path, but is for a worthy cause!""
and hang the thousands of cyclists that use this route daily, they can go on a diversion that involves a roundabut that has claimed cyclists lives before, or a flyover with no room to manouvre for cyclists who would have to dice with death to negotiate it
and the worthy cause would be Coca Cola ?
"During Friday's opening ceremony, an amateur cycling club tried to pedal their way through the security cordon around the Olympic Park.
The cyclists were identified as members of a monthly cycling event called "Critical Mass" that normally passes through the area, but police had prohibited them from cycling there on Friday evening."
The cyclists were not identified. They identified themselves. They were Critical Mass. Critical Mass is not an "amateur cycling club". It is a "customary procession" - definition by the House of Lords. It never tried to go through any security cordon. The cyclists were detained and arrested simply for riding on public roads after the Police decided, without any backing from any judge, to ban cyclists from riding "North of the river", i.e. over half the surface of one of the biggest cities on Earth.
“We’ve invested an awful lot of time and money to make it safer for cyclists,” he said.
It shows that none of that time has been spent talking to any cyclist.
It is two lousy weeks. You would think a bunch of greenies could make it through two weeks of Olympics and then go back to pissing and moaning.
