Mitt Romney would 'respect' Israel strike on Iran, aide says

Jason Reed / Reuters

U.S. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney meets Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem, Sunday.

JERUSALEM - Mitt Romney would “respect” Israel's use of military force to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, a senior aide said on Sunday as the Republican presidential candidate began his visit to Jerusalem.

"If Israel has to take action on its own, in order to stop Iran from developing that capability, the governor would respect that decision," Romney's senior national security aide Dan Senor told reporters traveling with the candidate.

While stopping short of endorsing a preemptive military attack, the comment seemed to differ with President Barack Obama's attempts to convince Israel to avoid any such move.

Gov. Romney’s first meeting was Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, who greeted him as a “personal friend and friend of Israel.”

Shaking hands underneath U.S. and Israel flags, the pair signaled that Iran would be top of the agenda in their discussions.

Netanyahu said: "We have to be honest and say that all the sanctions and diplomacy so far have not set back the Iranian program by one iota. And that's why I believe that we need a strong and credible military threat coupled with the sanctions to have a chance to change that situation."

Later, Gov. Romney and his wife Ann visited the city's Western Wall.

Sunday’s comments came as a senior Israeli official denied a newspaper report that President Barack Obama's national security adviser had briefed Netanyahu on a U.S. contingency plan to attack Iran should diplomacy fail to curb its nuclear program.

The Israeli liberal Haaretz daily on Sunday quoted an unnamed U.S. official as saying the adviser, Thomas Donilon, had described the plan over dinner with Netanyahu earlier this month.

"Nothing in the article is correct. Donilon did not meet the prime minister for dinner, he did not meet him one-on-one, nor did he present operational plans to attack Iran," the senior official, who declined to be named given the sensitivity of the issue, told Reuters.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Why is this a surprise, just proves that after 12 years of wars there is yet another war monger that never joined the service and avoided the draft 5 times, but does not mind sending other people into war so he can have some more private contracts and collect billions more.

"If Israel has to take action on its own, in order to stop Iran from developing that (nuclear) capability, the governor would respect that decision,"

The governor knows full well that if Israel starts a war with Iran, the United States will have to finish it; as if the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan weren't enough of a financial burden on the U.S. taxpayer.

Mr. Governor, give peace and diplomacy a chance before sending more American young men and women to fight a third Middle-East war.

You forgot to add: His five sons NEVER served either. They would be watching from "safe" distance.

We need to re-install the draft. The rich GOP politicians that continue the rhetoric of war will not get the message, until they get their own children to suffer the consequences of war.

Mitt Romney will only serve the masters of the GOP and run another war in Iran. That is guaranteed.

Vote DEMOCRAT, if you do not want to send your children to another UNPROVOKED war. At the same time, the GOP continues saying that they would take apart the "Obamacare"

Yeah! always more important to have WARS than healthcare! REAL SMART!

Are you trying to imply that only war time service, makes a person a veteran and a person who has served in the armed forces? What happened to all those that served and were lucky ( ans I am glad for them ) didn't have to see or be in a combat zone.

I don't like Romney and will not vote for him,but not because of the lack of a military service, or his sons. Nor would I vote against Obama (actually voting for him ) because he didn't serve.

Your comment ".WE ARE TALKING ABOUT WAR TIME." makes the statement that only war time service count. Iam a 20+ retired Army, With boots on the ground more then once. So that makes me more qualified then any of these two candidates? Does it make me more American or more of a Patriot then someone who has not served? Answer hell no!

Do I feel that Romney should be running at the mouth about supporting an attack on Iran when he is not even the Republicans official candidate yet, but he is not the President and should not be making such statements Even if said through his chief advisore it was approved by him.

Zionists made the Haavara Agreement with Hitler. Most of the International Banksters are pro Zionist. The BIS bank and other Swiss banks bankrolled Hitler and profited from the Holocaust. Wall Street loved Hitler. Therefore ZioNazi is a word that describes war profiteering elitist spawn like Romney. Romney treats US citizens as property and if they don't do their jobs he will ship them over seas where he keeps his I'll gotten gains. Mitt Romney's "war record"...

1965: Romney protested IN FAVOR of the war and the draft;

1965-1969: Applied for, AND RECEIVED, 4 (four) draft deferments (he was cycling around the French countryside "handing out bibles");

1994:

Romney quote:

"It was not my desire to go off and serve in Vietnam, but nor did I take any actions to remove myself from the pool of young men who were eligible for the draft"

... he only "removed" himself form the United States...

2007:

Romney quote:

"I longed in many respects to actually be in Vietnam and be representing our country there, and in some ways it was frustrating no to feel like I was there as part of the troops that were fighting in Vietnam."

Huh...now that's funny...first you protest IN FAVOR of the Vietnam War, then you high tail it out of the country...

Mit has "Draft Dodger" written all over his face.

And now he can add "War Monger"...

What's new here. Romney foolishly panders to the Far Right here at home and he is doing the same in Israel. Perhaps war is his solution to repairing the economy since he can't seem to define anything he would do other than continue the failure of trickle down theory. And of course he is surrounded by much of the same neocon crowd that led Bush into Iraq. Cheney would have no official position but he is still the godfather of the modern neocon, not Irving Kristol whose views have long been perverted, including by his own son.

Nevermind that Israel already has its own nukes and refuses to admit this or sign on to any non-proliferation treaties.

Barack Hussein Obama is a closet Muslim and supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood.

He bowed to the Saudi King, and supported the takeover of Egypt by the Muslim Brotherhood.

Rev. Jeremiah Wright who knew Obama for twenty years said about Obama in an interview that he was definitely a Muslim (who prayed five times a day to Allah when he was growing up and went to a Muslim school in Indonesia).

Rev. Jeremiah Wright could engulf President Obama in a major scandal - one that could doom his re-election. Edward Klein in his recent biography of Mr. Obama, “The Amateur,” interviewed Mr. Wright about the president’s past. On tape and on the record, Mr. Wright claims that in 2008, the Obama campaign offered $150,000 to buy his silence. If this is true - and I stress if - Mr. Obama may have committed a crime, and if so, he should be prosecuted and sent to prison. Wrightgate could bring down the Obama presidency.

Furthermore,

During the 2008 presidential campaign, the Los Angeles Times
reported that Obama attended a farewell dinner in Chicago for his longtime
friend Rashid Khalidi.

Khalidi reportedly served as the director of the PLO’s WAFA news agency in
Beirut during the 1970s. At that time, the PLO was one of the most active
terrorist organizations in the world.

The 2003 dinner was a tribute to Khalidi on the eve of his departure from the
faculty of the University of Chicago. Khalidi left the university for Columbia
University in New York City where he was appointed the Edward Said Professor of
Arab Studies and the director of Columbia’s Middle East Institute.

Obama has acknowledged a close, long-term friendship between his family and the
Khalidi family. Khalidi and his wife, Mona, who was the editor of the PLO’s
English news service in Beirut from 1976 to 1982, hosted a fundraiser for
Obama’s failed congressional campaign in 2000.

According to the Times report, at the 2003 dinner, Khalidi told his
Palestinian American guests to support Obama’s 2004 bid for the US Senate.
According to the report Khalidi said, “You will not have a better senator under
any circumstances.”

During Obama’s tenure as a director on the board of the Woods Fund of Chicago,
the charitable group donated $75,000 to Khalidi’s Arab American Action Network.

The Times article notes the virulently anti-Israel discussion that took
place at the 2003 Khalidi dinner. Among other things, a Palestinian read a poem
accusing Israel’s government of terrorism and sharply criticizing US support
for Israel. The speaker reportedly threatened Israel, saying that if
Palestinian interests are not secured, “then you [Israel] will never see a day
of peace.” Another speaker likened Israeli residents of Judea and Samaria to
Osama bin Laden.

The report claimed that Obama struck “a different tone... and called for
finding common ground,” but provided no direct citations of his speech to that
effect.

The event was videotaped and the Times reported that it had a copy of
the video.

Due to the nature of the anti-Israel rhetoric expressed at the dinner and the
longstanding friendship and mutual professional support between the Obamas and
the Khalidis, the Times report generated widespread public interest,
particularly among opponents of Obama’s 2008 presidential run. The Times
was asked repeatedly to release the videotape.

Despite the obvious public interest in the film, the newspaper repeatedly
refused to honor those requests. Four years after its initial publication,
interest in the dinner still runs strong.

In light of the continued relevance of the story, Breitbart News announced its
decision to offer $50,000 to anyone who will provide the videotape of the
dinner. The $50,000 reward is contingent on Breitbart News being able to obtain
independent authentication of the video recording, as well as verification that
the video recording contains Obama’s complete remarks at the event.

Explaining the initiative, Breitbart News editor-inchief Joel Pollak explained; “The Khalidi tape may be crucial to understanding Barack
Obama’s policy of confrontation and isolation towards Israel. The Los
Angeles Times
refused to provide a full account of what was on the video,
and other media failed to question that decision or to search for the facts
themselves. It is essential that the American people see the video for
themselves – not just to understand the past but to make an informed decision
about the next four years. It is well past time that we vetted Barack Obama –
and the mainstream media.”

Mitt Romney shows us once again that he is not a leader, he is a follower. The world will wipe their feet with him.

I'm Your Puppet

Much has been written about the warm personal relationship between the two friends, ex-governor Mitt Romney, the Republican candidate for the presidency of the United States, and Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel. Today it has become clear that the two are more than just friends. Romney apparently accepts instructions from Netanyahu who succeeded in getting him to cancel a scheduled and meticulously planned meeting with MK Shelly Yacimovich, the leader of the Labor party.

The meeting was due to take place today, at 1:30 P.M., at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem. There were still contacts this morning between Romney's media staff and Tal Alexandrovitch Segev, Yacimovich's media adviser. Yacimovich and Herzog, who was due to accompany her, prepared themselves to meet the man who might, in a matter of months, be elected president of the United States.

And then Romney went into a meeting with Netanyahu at the Prime Minister's Bureau in Jerusalem. During the course of the meeting the candidate's staff contacted Herzog to inform him that the meeting had regrettably been cancelled, “for reasons of protocol.” Herzog and Yacimovich have no doubts: Netanyahu, or his people, didn't approve of the Yacimovich meeting and pressured Romney to cancel it – and succeeded.

Romney would rather kiss up to Netanyahu and promises to stand by and support the war monger's wish for war vs Iran, while here in America MittWitt hides his tax returns, hides his Olympic records, hides his gov of MA records, wants to get rid of health care and has nothing to say while his party attempts to steal the election for him.

Foot ball 101.

Keep dreaming as Mitt continues to commit gaffe after gaffe that will lose him support and the election. Just today the report came out that this year the top 1% of Americans own 42% of the wealth. That is up from 40% last year. They have have created a new American aristocracy . Remember what happened in France to that group! I'm building my guillotine.

Romney understands that Iran is the enemy of the United States and poses a threat to the U.S. and the free world, something that Barack Hussein Obama seems to either not understand, or simply not care about.

Reverend Jeremiah Wright caused problems for President Barack Obama's campaign in 2008, and new details have emerged alleging that the then-candidate tried to convince his former pastor to keep quiet.
The retired pastor, who came under fire after an old sermon where he said that the September 11 terrorist attacks were 'America's chickens coming home to roost', said that he was offered $150,000 to stay silent until the election was over.
Journalist Edward Klein interviewed Mr Wright and included their conversation in his new book, The Amateur.

Furthermore,

During the 2008 presidential campaign, the Los Angeles Times reported that Obama attended a farewell dinner in Chicago for his longtime friend Rashid Khalidi.
Khalidi served as the director of the PLO’s WAFA news agency in Beirut during the 70s. At that time, the PLO was one of the most active terrorist organizations in the world.
The 2003 dinner was a tribute to Khalidi on the eve of his departure from the faculty of the University of Chicago. Khalidi left the university for Columbia University where he was appointed the Edward Said Professor of Arab Studies and the director of Columbia’s Middle East Institute.

Obama has acknowledged a close, long-term friendship between his family and the Khalidi family. Khalidi and his wife, Mona, who was the editor of the PLO’s English news service in Beirut from 1976 to 1982, hosted a fundraiser for Obama’s failed congressional campaign in 2000.

According to the L.A. Times, at the 2003 dinner, Khalidi told his Palestinian American guests to support Obama’s 2004 bid for the US Senate. According to the report Khalidi said, “Palestinians will have no better senator under any circumstances.”

Hey Duqu...nice copy and paste job. Are you paid by the line or letter for posting the same tired BS?

I love hearing the people cry that "Iran with nuclear weapons means the end of the world..they'll nuke everything starting with the US." It just makes me wonder if they have that short of memories that they forgot those were the same scare tactic talking points made about Iraq. Where were those massive stockpiles of WMDs found again?

You miss the WHOLE issue of Iran having nuclear weapons

.......Nukes don't kill people, people kill people.

North Korea, Pakistan, India, China, Russia, France, England, all have nukes. North Korea absolutely hates South Korea and us, but haven't used them. Pakistan and India hate each other, but haven't used them. Israel has enough nukes to fry Iran if Iran gets really stupid, I'm confident the Israelis have very specific plans in place on how to do it, and Iran knows it. Please don't give me crap about Iran being fanatical, they are no more fanatical than North Korea, which has initiated conventional weapon attacks against the South in the past. The old Soviet Union hated us and had enough nukes to fry us, but didn't. The WHOLE issue is MAD, mutually assured destruction. I would like to see Iran abandon any plans for nukes (as Libya under Gadaffy did), but I suppose if Iran would like to have nukes, it would be to give it some measure of prestige (in their eyes), leverage and a sense of deterence against external threats. However, if Israel is stupid enough to attack Iran, I say let them do it on their own, and not drag us into it. Israel has never sacrificed anything for us, they just take from us.

Haven't you heard, Leland from Detroit?

The chemical weapons were shipped to Syria during the final days of the Saddam regime. Or didn't they report that over at Democratic Underground?

Let me guess, you are anti-war, anti-Bush, right? Then you'd probably agree with me that war, especially nuclear war is a bad thing? Right? So do you think that nukes in the hands of the Iranian regime would bring more stability to that region, and reduce the risk of war?

The last thing the world needs is another crazy unstable regime in possession of nuclear weapons. WMD's are a threat in the hands of regimes that might hand it over to terrorists.

Besides, Romney is saying that the Israelis can go ahead and take care of it themselves. No one is saying that Dick Cheney should send American troops to fight another war!

NO MORE NUKES! NO MORE NUKES!

Pick out two cities and vaporize them with a nuke until they break.

ANY deployment of a nuke, anywhere in the world would almost incontrovertibly start the last World War, if not exterminate life on the planet. Further, even under the most rosy scenario (where nuclear Armageddon were averted), the nation firing off such weapon(s) would be the target of every conceivable terrorist action, trials for crimes against humanity, open hostility from every other nation on Earth, as well as other currently unimagined forms of retribution from every direction.

But, what the Hell- according to the Christian extremists, the sooner all Hell breaks loose, the sooner their imaginary friend will come back.

Those people, with whole heart, believe their fairy tales, and are convinced that they will live in eternal reward for their viciousness. Their "love" for Israel is duplicity in full relief and vivid color: they don't give a good God damn about Israel the nation- only what Israel can do to facilitate their delusional Rapture. It may not be so-and-so many virgins in paradise, but the twisted thinking is all the same.

So, what is it now, all these years after another foolish war ended? We have to destroy the world, in order to save it? If THAT is the final evolution of our reasoning and humanity, then the suicide of our species is truly nigh.

How is what Romney said any different from Obama's comments about 'supporting Israel' and 'not taking the military option off the table'?

It seems to me that both are pretty similar.

Roy Wilson - it would to some, as both allude to military action. However Romney's utterance, that he would "Respect [an] Israeli strike on Iran", is tantamount to saying he would accede the decision to Israel, which is something neither Obama, nor even George W. would have ever allowed.

What Romney is actually doing should be plain to all. He is positioning himself to the right of Obama on this issue, no doubt in the hope of eroding Obama's support among the Jewish community.

Regardless, such a decision, would be reckless. Unlike the 1970s strike against Iraq, which effectively derailed Saddam's nuclear weapons ambitions, an Israeli strike, which could only be aerial, would only intensify the conflict and polarize the region. Whether Iran managed to close the Straights of Hormuz, or only threatened to, the effect on the oil markets would be dramatic and the effect on the already shaky world economy would be severe.

The good news is that Mitt Romney seldom means what he says, whether it is in support of Gay Rights and the banning of assault rifles during his stint as a "severely conservative" governor of Massachusetts, or when he "saw his father marching with Martin Luther King" during the 2008 Presidential campaign.

So, even if elected, there is a chance that Mitt Romney's foreign policy decisions will be a good deal more pragmatic and rational than his public pronouncements might suggest. Always present, however, is the possibility that his decisions would be much worse.

With Romney, you never know.

Seems like Obama with his security agreement with Israel has also committed the United States to war as well. For some reason every politician in the United States feels like they need to kiss the ass of Israel to get elected. Obama will respect Israel's decision to attack Iran as well. We all know it and we all know the U.S. will fight the battle for them in the end. It doesn't matter how wrong Israel may be, the U.S. will respect their actions and back them up with American blood and American money.

Interesting posts today, Democrats of all people complaining about Mr. Romney not serving in the military or going to Vietnam, when he was fulfilling his required duty to his church, when the only battle most Dems ever engaged in was throwing rocks or spitting on troops when they returned, oh that's right , the Dems did participate in the battles of "Woodstock" and Chicago, but then again there was Obama's Best Bud,The Radical, Bill Ayers, who bombed the Pentagon and police stations and when asked after 9-11 if he regretted it said he wished he had done more, then proved it by going on to Launch Obama's Presidential campaign from his living room. Another poster asked what wars had Obama started? really? Well let us review shall we , besides the existing wars which were going on when he started, he has expanded ground operations into Yemen, Southern Sudan, Pakistan, Somali, Uganda,The Democratic Republic of the Congo,The Central African Republic,Southern Sudan, and Somalia,He has expanded assasination by drone operations,(funny Dems used to be against assasinations, seems there was also some law or other, oh well, what's the death of a few innocent people as long as they are not Americans, oh.....that's right,......never mind, He has also seen fit to smuggle arms to anti-government forces in Mexico and other Pro-Western, Central and South American Countries through Operations Fast and Furious and Castaway,(Strange, now why would he do that?), and has this helped America? After not being attacked in the United States since 9-11, Mr. Obama came into office and We have had our commercial vessels attacked by pirates at sea for the first time in two hundred years, commercial aircraft have been attacked, and soldiers have been murdered on the streets of our cities and even at our military bases by Muslim extremists and where has our Justice and Homeland Security Departments been? why fighting the REAL problems of Course, those dreaded returning veterans, The TEA Party and states, who for some reason object to ILLEGAL ALIENS, overrunning their peoples lands, killing civilians, raping and stealing before moving on to sanctuary cities provided by ,guess who? the Dems! So when Mr. Romney states that under him, We would stand by our allies, of course the "Patriotic" Dems will go ballistic, as demonstrated in these post, interesting situation indeed.

      Thank you Mr Romney

NO matter how you feel on Israeli/Palestinian issue you must realize that Israel is a nuclear power with a stockpile of nuclear weapons and delivery systems.

NO matter how you feel on the Israeli/Palestinian issue you must realize that the Muslim world and in particular the Arab world seeks the genocide of the Jews.

If the USA does not make it clear to the Arab world that it will stand by Israel we will sit by and watch as the Israelis PROTECT their children with the only means at hand.

      That "means" is nuclear.

It is clear that President Obama refuses to see these facts.

Does our President think the Jews will get off the trains, set down their suitcases and march to the gas cambers in a peaceful manner this time?

Really Mr President would you not protect your own children?

Wow, I am confused. Mitt is a Mormon, right? That means he is supposed to be guided by Jesus, or is it Brigham Young or ? Because if he was influenced by Jesus, he would not applaud a nuclear-armed country like Israel attacking anyone. In fact, the whole concept of embracing war, invasions, occupation, violence would be abhorrent to a real Christian, or maybe Mormons aren't real Christians, and they believe in violence. The bottom line is: war is a business, and those who promote war are death profiteers.

Romney's "world tour concert" is not doing so well.

      1) He went to Australia and stated that the Australian Foreign Minister (who he called the Prime Minister) had confided in him that they saw America as a "country in decline." The Foreign Minister stated that not only did he not say that, but that he had said that the American economy remains the strongest in the world and that he was pleased with Obama's well-thought-out additions to the Pacific military presence. Romney said he was a liar. Carr was more diplomatic and just stated that he "disagreed" with Romney's "interpretation." Mitt was a bust down under.

      2) The critical remarks about the Olympics did not sit well with the British. As someone asked, "Do you realize how difficult it is to come across as a snobish, out-of-touch rich guy in a country that still has a queen?" The British press, especially were quick to point out that with the help of a $600 million taxpayer bailout, the SLC Olympics were still scandal-ridden, lost a huge amount of money (over $304 million), and were obtained for Salt Lake City by acts of bribery, much of it orchestrated by the LDS church leadership. Mitt doesn't like to talk about the Olympics just as he doesn't want to talk about Bain and he doesn't want to talk about his unreleased tax returns (which the British press claim are harboring two years in which Mitt paid ZERO taxes and actually got back money from previous years.)

      3) Romney is now visiting his "close and old and old friend and co-worker" Ben Netanyahu. Apparently the two did work in the same US company long ago, but in an interview being played both here and in Israel, Netanyahu says that he might have spoken to Romney to say "Hi" but otherwise has no recollection of ever meeting him, talking with him, or having any dealings of any kind with him.

      4) I guess Romney is going to be explaining to the Poles about how many it will take to screw in a light bulb.

Speraking of screwed. The current odds of Obama winning on Nov 6th are 67.4% to Romney's 32.6% --- better than two to one odds. If the election were held today, those odds would be Obama at 73.6% to Romney at 26.4% --- almost three to one. Is this really the best the GOP can do? They can't even find a Christian to run for President??????

Hmmm.... interesting generalization, jdstill. Let's take a look at notable democrats and republicans and compare their military experience during the Vietnam War:
Bill Clinton - received a student deferment while an Oxford scholar.
George W. Bush - got a cushy post in the Texas National Guard. "Served" in Texas and Georgia.
Al Gore - served in Vietnam in 1971.
Dick Cheney - filed a series of student deferments, some while he was not a full-time student. Later said he had more important things to do than serve in the military.
John Kerry - served in Vietnam. Received the silver star & purple heart.

I'm trying to detect the pattern you see of non-serving Democrats, and selflessly serving Republicans. I'm not detecting what you seem to find so obvious.
      Please advise...

At least He was honest for once in his life, and then went on to tour the Communist block staying with the leaders of those communist countries at the height of the cold war, as a student! How in the world did He manage to do that? Where did He get the money to go and who sponsored such a trip at that time in our history? interesting no? Mr. Bush on the other hand , was a fighter pilot, men known for their lack of courage , because flying high performance aircraft is such a safe and cushy position, is it not? Unfortunately , Mr Bush flew interceptors,You know the men who responded when Russian Bombers would try to violate American Airspace at the height of the cold war, there were no interceptor squadrons assigned to Vietnam, your snide, insulting remark was, I will be kind and call it, disingenuous, and Mr. Cheny is well known to have a long history of heart trouble, but he still served his country, now Mr.Gore was a Stars and Stripes Reporter, the only one I ever heard of who had his own bodyguard, and Mr. Kerry, check that! Why, if they had let the man stay one month longer, he could have won the war all by himself!and from a boat no less! no self serving embellishment and maintaining of political viability there! no sir!and I will be waiting for that long list of Republicans with all those Communist, radical and terrorist ties, but take Your time, I know it will take a while to put together such an extensive list.

How is what Romney said any different from Obama's comments about 'supporting Israel' and 'not taking the military option off the table'?

It seems to me that both are pretty similar.

Although I am very appreciative of Romney not taking this too far and tripping on current policy and strategies, this was simple grand-standing to swing the Florida Jewish vote... as his campaign stated directly.

Yes, they are similar. But Romney's statement seems to defer to Israel and come close to advocating a preemptive attack on Iran. Obama never put it in those terms and, in fact, has kept specific guards against that action unless we "all agree".

Another big difference? Obama is President and has every right to express specific policy. Romney is unemployed and should confine his statements to general support.

Again, however, I have to give it to him in that in a later interview he pulled back on the "I would respect that decision" statement that came from his staff... said he wouldn't take it that far.

Sunday’s comments came as a senior Israeli official denied a newspaper report that President Barack Obama's national security adviser had briefed Netanyahu on a U.S. contingency plan to attack Iran should diplomacy fail to curb its nuclear program.

Obama: Not acting in Libya 'would have been a betrayal of who we are'
        http://articles.cnn.com/2011-03-28/politics/us.libya_1_libya-mission-libya-policy-libyan-leader-moammar-gadhafi?_s=PM:POLITICS

Barry doesn't stand with Israel, he stands with the muslims every time!

Syria is a helluva lot different than Libya. In Libya, Gaddafi had no major foreign backers; Syria has Iran and Russia. Libya's army was small, due in part to the nation's small population of 6 million; Syria is around 3 times the size of Libya population-wise. That translates into a larger army that is supplied with RUSSIAN arms and equipment; last time I checked, the Russians are the 2nd largest arms trader in the world, and their weapons are pretty damn good . Also, Libya is mostly desert with a few major cities; Syria has several large cities, like Latakia, Aleppo, Damascus, and Homs. Finally, the Syrian opposition is a decentralized group of factions that are united only in their effort to kill Assad; they might end up killing each other after war's end, not to mention the purge of Christians and Alawites that supported Assad mainly for their own protection. Syria could descend into sectarian chaos much like Lebanon did in the civil war of the 70s and 80s, only that this time the Christians and Alawites won't stand a chance thanks to their small numbers. At least in Lebanon, Christians were about 40% of the population.

Are you @!$%#ing kidding me??? You're actually saying that Israel should nuke any Arab country that doesn't like it??? Hell, then we should have blown up the Soviets during the Cold War; oh wait, that would have caused WORLD WAR III. As an Arab American, I can say that not all of the Arab world hates Israel; they oppose it mainly because of political expediency to prevent an extremist Islamist uprising. What right does Israel have to protect it's people by massacring others???? This is insanity. And are you really bringing up the Holocaust and throwing the President into that mix??? The Israelis ARE NOT facing another Holocaust; they have nukes and a whole military, so anyone who tries to massacre them will be blown to kingdom come. Iran only wants to rattle its sabers and scare the world; going nuclear is just another way of achieving world power-status. Besides, people thought the Indians and the Pakistanis would nuke each other when they got the bomb, and actually things have been relatively okay, at least in purely military terms. Nuclear weapons tend to stabilize a country, probably due to their realization of the danger that will fall upon them if they act irresponsibly with their new powers. Even the radicals in Tehran understand that a war with Israel will probably lead to their economy tanking and a possible coup.

Ladies and gentlemen, we cannot afford another warmonger in the White House. The last one sacrificed the lives of thousands of innocent American soldiers and tens of thousands of civilians in two unnecessary and unethical wars. Those wars were not fought for freedom and democracy, or for even the protection of the United States; they were purely political wars. We all lived the high life, isolating ourselves from the reality of war while delegating less than 5% of the population to face combat or live with the possibility of waking up one morning and realizing that a loved one has just been killed or maimed. We refused to pay for this war, preferring to think that we could afford them AND cut taxes at the same time. We didn't even engage in a draft so that every American had a chance to serve; we just deployed and redeployed thousands of veterans, paralyzing many either physically or mentally. Many eventually cracked and went beserk, like that American who killed 16 Afghan civilians. We didn't send our boys overseas to fight for freedom; we wasted their lives just so we could continue to live the good life. If we have to start another damn war, let it at least be for the right reasons. Let us at least sacrifice something, like paying higher taxes or buying war bonds, so that we don't just ignore or forget the war that is going on and so that we can be a part of the war effort. Let us all be ready for a draft, because at least then we have a more or less equal shot at getting deployed and serving our country. For our veterans and our servicemen and women, is this too much to ask????

We will have the largest massing of US naval force in one area since wwII in a few months. Both of these two are gunning for a war with IRAN.

Mitt Romney was protesting the antiwar protestors while dodging the draft; what a fellow?

He is wiiling to spend American blood and treasure, while his sons are safe at home and his money safe in Swiss, Cayman, and Bermuda bank accounts. I am sure he is now collecting huge campaign donations from people and companies that stand to gain tons from a war. Guv. Romney seem to be joining Pres Bush and saying: Bring it on!! But who will pay for it. Will China lend us money to pay for this one too? Or will they align with Russia and Iran to start WWlll.

My point: Libya is different than Syria. Fighting Syria is gonna be a lot more difficult, considering that Syria has Russia and Iran as backers, and the aftermath of the civil war might be another civil war, sparked by sectarian violence between the Christians and the Alawites (who supported Assad because they viewed him as the lesser of two evils) and the Sunnis. Plus Syria has a much bigger army and more air defenses, which may shoot down at least a few of our bombers. In short, Assad is gonna be a tougher nut to crack than Gaddafi. You think taking him down was long??? Wait for the fall of Damascus.....

Mitt Romney will go down in history as the SECOND most destructive set of loose lips America has ever known. It is OUTRAGEOUS that any Presidential Candidate would stoke fires of an already brewing war in a blatant attempt to, basically, LIE and say "Obama doesn't support Israel as much as I do", when it's clear to any INTELLIGENT person that supporing Israel means keeping your mouth shut and letting diplomacy and negotiations continue. "The Muslim World" does NOT suppot the genocide of Jews, religious nut cases do. The same Variety of NUTCASES who verbally attack young Jewish girls on the street in New York on their way to school, calling them whores and "temptresses in training" for not wearing "modest (orthodox) enough" clothing! The same happens on the streets of Israel when those same variety nutcases see children walking down the street. It's not only on the one side.

They ALL need a boat to board right before it sinks but they'd probably slit each others throats before they ever had to breathe any water, since the right-wing religious nuts on BOTH SIDES are so bloodthirsty and evil they can't STAND people doing what they wish and believing what they like. In other words, they can't stand freedom. BOTH sides: Sharia Islamists AND "Sharia Zionists" are awful; disgusting. They wish to enslave the world and I, for one, will never be a slave to any invisible friends or made-up space gods. F%!k that!

Mitt Romney: Awful; pathetic; disgusting; stupidly irresponsible; not even worthy of a CAMPAIGN for President, mush less the office itself. LOSER.

Romney can start a war if he takes point ON THE FIRING LINE, how about that?

Well You certainly did name more Democrats ,(Two), who served in Vietnam than I could name Republicans with known associations with radicals , Socialists, Communists and terrorists,

jdstill - I just took the last few Presidents and Vice Presidents, starting with 1992 and going forward. I let the results speak for themselves.

Your response was both laughable and inane:

Mr. Bush on the other hand , was a fighter pilot, men known for their lack of courage , because flying high performance aircraft is such a safe and cushy position, is it not? Unfortunately , Mr Bush flew interceptors,You know the men who responded when Russian Bombers would try to violate American Airspace at the height of the cold war,

You must be living in a dream world. Show me one instance in the last 40 years when Russian Bombers tried to violate U.S. air space. If they did, it would not have been the Texas Air National Guard, but the U.S. Air Force which would respond.

George W. Bush had a cushy military role which ensured he would never hear a shot fired in anger, and "served" much of his time in a neighboring state doing political work.

and Mr. Cheny is well known to have a long history of heart trouble, but he still served his country,

I should fall down laughing. Cheney's never filed a medical deferment. He had no heart troubles when he was of draft age. He filed a series of student and hardship deferments, some when he was not a full time student.

His service to his country? Involving our nation in the useless morass which was Iraq, while Osama bin Laden was laughing at us from Pakistan. Service indeed.

Mr.Gore was a Stars and Stripes Reporter, the only one I ever heard of who had his own bodyguard,

The point is that he served, voluntarily, while Bush & Cheney were safely 12,000 ,miles away.

Mr. Kerry, check that! COMMANDO KERRY!, With all those Medals!, in just Four months in Country! , unheard of! Why, if they had let the man stay one month longer, he could have won the war all by himself!and from a boat no less!

Again, the point being that he served, in combat. Where was Bush? Where was Cheney?

Intellect - Thanks for seconding my opinion, and it is important to note that the individuals I named were not necessarily people I hold in deep respect.  My only point that jdstill's original statement, like many from the political fringes [or ether side]:

Interesting posts today, Democrats of all people complaining about Mr. Romney not serving in the military or going to Vietnam, when he was fulfilling his required duty to his church, when the only battle most Dems ever engaged in was throwing rocks or spitting on troops when they returned,

        ...was palpably false.

          #1.110 - Sun Aug 5, 2012 8:13 AM EDT

I agree. It seems the under educated GOP followers need a hero so they invent one. We all know Bush II was an avid no show while doing cushy state side duty in the Texas Air Guard and ended up going AWOL while Cheney had more deferments than New Gingrich if that is possible, but yet they bad mouthed John Kerry for serving in Vietnam when he did not have to and was awarded many medals which he had the intelligence to protest against what he saw first hand as a war that was invented by the Military Industrial Complex along with Dow Chemical. The Vietnamese were simply farmers who wanted to make a living and not work for French plantation owners.

John Kennedy was a definite war hero but once again he was a Democrat which did not register with the Republicans since Reagan could not hold a candle to J.F. Kennedy's record so the GOP made Ronbo bigger than life. You see where I am going with this is that there had not been many GOP presidential candidates that were real heroes so they need to make them up and embellish them so much that they begin to believe their own lies.

I grew up during the draft (1A), Vietnam and Kent State and those are events I will never forget but yet we have Bush II, Cheney, Romney and Rush to name a few who have ran the other direction when it was their turn only to send the sons and daughters of the middle class to THEIR wars. Really big men in the eyes of the GOP but we know what they are made of don't we?

There's a reason that I usually stay away from these threads and that's mostly due to the venom that's contained in these comments. Both sides, it seems, are so adamant about their ideology, and attack with such vigor, that it's easy to understand why our country is more divided now than at any other point in recent history.

For the sake of argument, I'm going to assume that the people posting here are adult and not pre-pubescent boys and girls with an unusual interest in politics. To that end people, can we not have this discourse using a little more class and decorum and drop the name-calling and rhetoric? I do realize that sitting in the comfort of your home behind a keyboard does provide you with a certain amount of comfort knowing that you can say almost anything without fear of getting punched in the face. You do realize that if we were engaging in this conversation say, at Starbuck's, and you called me a left-wing dumb-azz, that there would be a strong possibility that you'd be enjoying a liquid diet for the next few weeks right? For most of you, you wouldn't dream of speaking the way you are here to a perfect stranger so how about, a least pretending to be, acting a little more grown up and civilized while presenting your thoughts and opinions. Just sayin!

As for the merits of each of these candidates, they both have huge faults and a string of broken policies and promises. For that, please realize that they have two things going against them...they're human and politicians. Despite all of your wishing, that's who they are. Obama, for all his grand speeches, is still just a politician who, like all the others, will promise and pander his way through the process just to get his job back. Yes, he is black. Yes, due to the fact he is black, there is still a large part of our society who can't get past that! No, he's never served in the military and neither has Romney (or his sons). But I've got a fact for ya, neither have a bunch of other folks in this country! And ya know what, that's a good thing! Not everyone is cut out to serve and, the last time I checked, having served isn't a requirement for citizenship nor does it give you the right to mouth-off at will. Also, with the ton of advisers (some good, some bad), you don't really need to have a military mind to be CiC....just a mind will do.

Lastly, for those of you who with the position that Romney's remarks are inciting another war, I'd recommend a through review of the geopolitical situation that is the Middle East. This isn't a recent turn of events that's just blown out of hand all the sudden. It started back when these guys were called "Persians" and it hasn't let up much since. Only the technology has changed. For the other perspective, Obama's sitting on his hands isn't the answer either. After just a brief review of history, you'll come to the conclusion that war, and human conflict, is a constant. For an example, downsize to these threads here. The type of rhetoric displayed here is exactly the primary component of conflict. Too simple a concept to grasp? Grow up folks. Act human, conduct yourselves as civialized individuals, and treat others with respect...or be prepared for the consequence.

To the person commenting about Rush Limbaugh -- too funny. Rush never went to college himself -- he is uneducated (and ignorant, which is worse), and just flails away with his facism, hatred and fear-mongering.

Even worse Leslie, I heard on the news that Limbaugh DID go to college in southern Illinois. But, according to Limbaugh's mother, he flunked every course! No degree for him. Isn't it pathetic that such a big mouthed ignoramus makes so much money? Doesn't say much about the people who spend time listening to him either.

Limbaugh is like a caricature of an antisocial truck driver- he knows everything, been everywhere, did everything and just wants to educate everyone out there. Imagine a CB radio, pumping out 50 Million watts. That's 28 years of nonstop hate-radio.

No person could possibly remain sane after that long spewing intellectual sewage. It is a warning contained in that one man's miserable existence: Listen to the speaker long enough and you will become just like him.

Basil Romeo, the fact that Obama is biracial is actually even more of a reason for racists to hate him.

During the '70s and '80s, the KKK had a shift in ideology. Realizing that they weren't going to be able to either "pack 'em up and send 'em back to Africa" or eradicate people of color, they instead focused on terrorizing and ostracizing interracial couples. The focus of hate shifted from "those evil blacks" to the "abomination" of mixing races. The fact that Obama is living proof (elected to the highest office in the nation, no less) of the mixing of races severely chaps the asses of these ignorant dinosaurs.

Don't get me wrong: not everyone hates Obama because of his race; some people hate him for other reasons. The simple fact is that, whether we want to admit it or not, there are still too many people out there who'd never give him a chance simply because of the color of his skin.

We all deny being racist; they all deny being racist. Republicans, Democrats and Independents deny it and yet, racism is alive and well. Kind of paradoxical, ain't it?

Hate sells, Jeanne. And currently, a majority of it is coming from the right. Oh, they'll spin and try to deny it, but they can't. It's hatred of a president who doesn't fit the description of his 43 predecessors that is the cause.

Romney understands that Iran is an enemy of the United States, and that it poses a threat to the U.S. and to the entire world, something which Obama doesn't understand, or doesn't care about.

Obama wrote in his autobiography that he used to pray to Allah five times a day when he was growing up in Indonesia. His pastor Jeremiah Wright, who supposedly converted him to Christianity says that he believes that Obama is a Muslim. The guy knew Obama for twenty years! So unless someone here can present any convincing proof that Obama is Christian, I'll stick to the observations of a guy who actually knew Obama for twenty years, and was supposed to be his pastor!

In a recent interview Rev. Wright said that in 2008 the Obama campaign paid him 150,000$ to keep silent because they knew that what he had to say could be very damaging to Obama.

            OBAMA IS A CLOSET MUSLIM.

Incredible! Romney wants a war with Iran. Some of Netanyahu's senior military advisors said a war not necessary/desirable - but it is less risky if they have the US to fight it for them. Romney has just given Netanyahu the proxy to start a regional war and get the US to fight it.

It will help defense companies and sink the US in blood and debt. Iran has 80 million people - three times the population of Iraq. After the air strikes they will have to react and have to be occupied (by the US). Israel has less than 8 million people so has to get the US to fight this war for Netanyahu.

If Romney could not create jobs while governor why do you think he can now?

Who is Romney blaming for the outsourcing of American government jobs to India while he was governor?

Romney is fighting to increase our war budget and tax cuts for himself with no thought of the care he would be taking from our wounded veterans or food from our American children.

The republicans fought against jobs for Americans because the small tax surcharge they said would cause irreparable harm to the so called job creators.

No jobs, but these same millionaires and billionaires have hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars to spend to buy the election for republicans that have promised them forever tax cuts.

If you had read up on this situation in the past, you would see that most Mideast experts do not feel there is much probablility of this happening. Iran is Persion, not Arabic, and so no feelings of brothery bonding. As far as Islam goes, most Arab nations are Sunni majority, Iran is mostly Shiite. Most Arab nations do not trust Iran, and quite a few are fearful of it. Saudi Arabia would prefer an Iran without nukes as much as Israel does.

Romney has not given Israel the right to do anything. He is a Politician who will say anything about any issue with no thought as to the results. President Obama is NOT going to create an war with Iran or Irac to destroy Irans Neclear capability.

It seems that the history of the US involment in Egypt, Libia and Syria has gone right over the heads of the Republicans.

President Obama is going to find a solution that does not involve American troops. If need be the United States will totally destroy the Iranian capability to produce Neclear weapons. It won't come to that because Israel will perform that function and if Iran tries to retaliate the United Stares will pound them back into the sand.

2 unfunded wars and a tax break for the rich is what drove us off this cliff. Now Romney is talking about more war??

And before anyone starts saying when did Romney say anything about war?? Do you forget that he said he wants to make our military the biggest baddest in the world so everyone one else will be too afraid fo us to mess with us?

How does he plan to pay for it and why does he feel the need to make our military so big if he has no intention to start any wars? We are supposed to be making military cuts remember? They over charge for everything ..they are our biggest wasters of tax payer money.

I seem to remember that the congress made a deal that if our super committee didnt come to any decision on our debt ceiling and other things that there would be automatic defense cuts...now they is talking about reversing that decision and going back on their agreement..bascially the republicans what to renigh on their deal..essentially lying to the american people so they can have their way. Romney seems to agree with that.

I also want to no why this guy is so secretive about his campaign fund raising? He acts like we dont no what hes doing...we arent that dumb Mittens!!! Wow I can't believe the misinterpretations and incorrect conclusions in this discussion, not to mention the digression from the news story. Before I get started I am not a Republican or Democrat and will NOT be voting for Romney OR Obama this year. Which brings up my first point.

It was mentioned in one of the posts here that "there are only two parties". That is totally incorrect. the list of valid parties that are typically on ballots of most, if not all states are, as follows:

                Democrat Party

                Republican Party

                Libertarian Party

                Communist Party

                Socialist Party

                Green Party

As far as war mongering and the need to go to war, there are times when it is necessary and other times when it isn't, the Iraq war for instance, was not necessary, but there been others in our history that were as unnecessary. The War of 1812 for instance, which was initiated by the father of the modern democrat party, Andrew Jackson. I won't digress to much but he also was a believer in "ethnic cleansing. What he did to the Amer-Indians was not much less that what Hitler did to the Jews. The Vietnam conflict was another unnecessary war, again initiated by a Democrat President, JFK, and latter escalated by another Democrat LBJ and finally ended by a Republican Nixon.

Based strictly on historical fact Democrats have been involved in many more wars than Republicans. WWI, President Wilson, Democrat, WWII FDR, Democrat, and if one studies what REALLY happened regarding Pearl Harbor and what was known in advance by the Roosevelt administration, the pacifist American people were tricked into going into that war. The Korean conflict, Truman, Democrat President. As already mentioned Vietnam, Kennedy/Johnson Democrat Presidents. Granted the track record of both Bushs put them nearly into the same category as their Democrat predecessors especially George W.

So to make the statement that Republicans are the war mongers is not true, the Democrats have been as guilty, if not more so, of War mongering.

Now back to the actual story itself. I can understand Romney's position and comments based solely on a political level. I don't entirely agree with it, but I do understand it. Obama has virtually slapped the Israeli's in the face on numerous occasions. He has NEVER even visited Israel, although he has visited the King of Saudi Arabia, as well as other Arab potentates. He had the visiting Prime Minister of Isreal, Benjamin Netanyahu, during a visit to the U.S. whisked to a meeting through the back door of the White House as if he were a secret North Korean envoy. This behaviour is viewed by Israelis as disrespectful and what Romney is attempting to do is show his support of Israel in a more PERSONAL manner. This is diplomacy 101, not a call to war.

I am enthusiastic with all of you that are trying to be involved in the political theater or our country, but please do me a favor. Read some history and spend a little less time with politically biased blogs and Web Sites. Although you can garner some pearls from them, question EVERYTHING and research and verify what you read before posting.

NEVER forget that the dreaded Al Qaeda has sympathizers and organized groups in every nation in the Middle East and beyond. Should the USA attack or support an attack on Iran, you can bet your last stolen nickel there would be all Hell breaking loose on the terrorism front.

..........Which is a great argument for us to keep our BIG NOSE out of it. If Israel wants to bite off more than they can chew, that's their fault, so let them choke on it! We've already lost far too many American lives because of our support for them.

Folks, this is a bad guy who is cowing down to israel in order to get the jewish vote. The problem is that he is tipping the scales and showing out loud that the us is in israel's pocket.

The entire world is beginning to see this controlling relationship by israel and we are soon going to be israel number two. This will furthur isolate us politically in the world.

Do we want to be see as another israel ? Do we not understadf the ramifications of being not see as an nonest broker like in the case of the Palestinians?

The reality now is that I am ashamed of being an american i the world because our actions are being seen as complete israeli actions nowadays. Lets not whine when crap starts to happen here because of that.

If israel attacks Iran, we will have to put up with 11 dollars a gallon for gas. Do we really owe israel all of that ? Exactly why do we support them blindly when they cause nothing but extreme problems with everyone ....

Conrad - The entire world is not beginning to see the controlling relationship Israel has with the U.S. The entire world has known all along. Bibi is a nationalist war monger and Mitt will do whatever his moneybag Adelson tells him. I like neither Romney nor Obama but I'll have to vote for Obama to prevent this buffoon from finishing off this country completely with yet another war that is unnecessary, not financed and will obliterate what's left of our military.
Never mind Romney's trickle down outsourcing ideas that will erase what's left of the middle class. He's an entitled rich kid and there is no way he'll ever understand what it's like to truly wonder where your next pay check will come from.

                Conrad,

I am not ashamed to be an American, actually I am quite proud to be an American. Otherwise I mostly agree with your post.

What I am ashamed of is the current state of the Republican party. They have taken the concept of conservatism to the extreme with a tinge of blatant racism thrown in to boot.

To my Republican friends; It's OK to admit to the obstructionism, voter suppression, war mongering, pandering to the wealthy, and out right lies of the 'current' republican party. Just because your daddy and grand daddy were Republican doesn't mean that you have to fall in cahoots with the current crop of ethically challenged yahoos and vote against your own interest.

Search your heart and soul for truth and justice...then re-elect President Obama.

We have not taken care of the all the injured soldiers from all those previous wars, and now this statesman wants to push a small country such as Israel to go to war with Iran! Iran knows that they better not develop a nuclear arsenal, the world told them not to. Iran must know that if any of their nuclear material falls in the hands of terrorist, and it is used against the US, they may not have a country. Those religious fanatics are not stupid, it is in their interest to ensure that no attacks come to US soil or they will get it and lose power. The U.S.A is the world police force, but refuse to admit it. If we did not want the job, we should have never control so much capital, defeated the Soviets, work with China and other countries to provide the world with all the needed goods.

The republicans broke our economy just 3 1/2 years ago so lets just blame President Obama for the crash and high unemployment the republicans caused.

Interesting that deficit didn't matter until the minute Obama was elected then the republicans started howling about the deficit and how it is the worst damage that President Obama and the democrats had done to our country.

Suddenly everything the republicans had done became President Obama's fault because you know we can't blame bush for what he and the republicans had done to our country.

Republicans fought against jobs for Americans and want you to blame Obama instead.

Interesting taking care away from our wounded veterans and food out of the mouths of starving children is not class warfare, but asking the rich to pay the same rate of taxes that the rest of us do is class warfare.

Independent Study Finds Bush "Unequivocally" Lied U.S. into War with Iraq

A nonprofit collaboration of two independent, non-governmental organizations has concluded that President Bush used at least 532 misleading and deceptively false statements to justify military action against Iraq. In all, the Bush administration as a whole used a mind-numbing 935 false statements to goad America into war with Iraq. Calling their findings "an orchestrated deception on the path to war," the partnership report may very well be the first fully comprehensive investigation that incontrovertibly proves the Bush administration lied this nation into an unfounded war.

The Center for Public Integrity and the Fund for Independence in Journalism determined, through a collective study and breakdown of Bush administration speeches, press briefings and interviews, that Bush and other top officials "led the nation to war on the basis of erroneous information."

According to the report, Bush alone lied more than 259 times, including 232 false statements "about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq" and "28 about Iraq's links to al-Qaida." Quoting Charles Lewis and Mark Reading-Smith of the Fund for Independence in Journalism, "It is now beyond dispute that Iraq did not possess any weapons of mass destruction or have meaningful ties to al-Qaida." Furthermore, the shared study noted, "the statements were part of an orchestrated campaign that effectively galvanized public opinion and, in the process, led the nation to war under decidedly false pretenses."

Among the seven top officials cited, Colin Powell was the most egregious in the dispersal of dissembling and mendacious language regarding the requisite call for war against Iraq. Powell is attributed to having made 244 false statements about weapons of mass destruction in a two-year period beginning on September 11, 2001 and through the commencement of military action in Iraq on March 18, 2003.

As a microcosm example of at least 935 lies cataloged by the exhaustive study, Vice President Dick Cheney declared on August 26, 2002 that "Simply stated, there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction." Bush's patently false proclamation, made on May 29, 2003, "We have found the weapons of mass destruction," has now been completed discredited. Of course, no weapons of mass destruction were ever found and George Bush, on NBC's Meet the Press in 2004 conceded, "No weapons of mass destruction had been found in Iraq."

In a never-ending stream of fuzzy rationales to justify war, beginning as early as November of 2001, the Bush administration began making disingenuous statements attempting to tie Saddam to the attackers of 9/11. Quoting Bush, "They're both risks, they're both dangerous. The difference, of course, is that Al Qaeda likes to hijack governments. Saddam Hussein is a dictator of a government. Al Qaeda hides, Saddam doesn't, but the danger is, is that they work in concert." However, in stark contrast, the 9/11 Commission Report was unable to establish any "evidence indicating that Iraq cooperated with Al Qaeda in developing or carrying out any attacks against the United States."

The comprehensive study also touches on and illuminates the vast failures of the mainstream media; mainly their failure to offer critical scrutiny, while chiefly operating as Bush's surrogate and disseminator in the misleading rhetoric of the dire need to take the country to war. During that critical, seminal juncture in the run up to the war, the media "creating an almost impenetrable din" that forced out nearly all dissenting views, the report revealed.

In what may be the first true, categorical "War Report Card" that separates fact from fiction, fine tunes mass distortion into utter clarity, the Center for Public Integrity makes a compelling case that "Following 9/11, President Bush and seven top officials of his administration waged a carefully orchestrated campaign of misinformation about the threat posed by Saddam Hussein's Iraq."

Lack of a plan to create jobs and class warfare has been going on for the last 30+ years - trickle down does not work. Trickle down is inaction and hope for the best, which is no plan at all. And our country was never stronger than when we had a strong middle class, which trickle down destroyed.

The repub party used to be the Grand Old Party - what the h$ll happened? No debate, no compromise, do whats best for the party and to h$ll with the country ... Repubs and dems used to come together in times of crisis, solve problems, discuss things in an adult manner.

We need someone to stop the REPUBLICAN class warfare of the past 30+ years, and we need a jobs plan instead of the REPUBLICAN inaction.

We need Obama/Biden for the next 4 years, and we need the republican exteremists to be voted out.

                @hejustdoesn'tget it -

A President without a spine who has divided our country with high debt, lack of a real plan to create jobs, class warfare and the lack of ability to lead our nation.

Are you talking about Bush, who squandered the surplus, cut taxes/revenue but instituted spending on new gov't agency (Homeland security) and billion dollar programs (Medicare part D) and ran two wars (one of which he lied to get us into) off the books, whose tax cuts didn't lead to a lot more jobs, who really started the rich vs middle class/poor warfare by taking care of his rich friends, and tried to prove his spine by landing on an aircraft carrier and declaring victory without ever having captured the person (bin Laden) who was supposedly why we were at war to begin with? He led the country, all right, led us right over a financial cliff into the mess we're in today.

Funny. . . I thought this conversation was about Obama and Romney. Maybe you mean Romney would just be Bush 2.0.

I'm sorry but you people just crack me up. Cost's, oil going up, we'll pound them into the sand, etc. etc. It's oblivious most of you were never in a war. Probably just your games you play on your toys.

The real reason you don't want to go to war is very simple. Human life! Both civilian and military casualties. It's nice to be here while your soldiers are out there doing the dirty stuff for our politicians. Dieing, killing other humans, etc. while you all get to come home, kiss your wife and go to bed with clean sheets.

But no, it will drive up the cost of oil or our deficit can't handle it! Really, then the next time some fool like Mr. Romney who would probably s##t his pants if on the front lines during a war, speak up and make your Representatives realize why a war should be avoided with all reasonable effort.

I am glad we have a President that isn't "Hawkish" but would rather to try and seek other avenues to prevent a war. It's time the American people start letting our politicians know that is the way to go. Enough cost to our brave military over the last decade in sacrifice and lost of life.

As for pounding Iran into the sand, let me say they are an Iraq, Egypt or Sryia. Unless you want to use nuclar weapons it could very well be a toss-up. They are one tough country. That's why they are so feared in the region. just ask Iraq!

America needs to wake up and realize war is not a game anymore. Just because we have our own private army of volunteers to fight for us we shouldn't forget the horrors of war. Too bad the draft isn't still in effect. Allot more Americans wouldn't be so eager it.

So think about the real reason's we shouldn't go to war, and why we should make our allies less "hawkish" and "doves". Israel needs to grow up and start being responsible.

I guess voting will require who is the lesser of two evils, we need the Thomas Jefferson party. PS, I voted for Reagan twice, GHW Bush. Dole and GwBush in 2000, but after seeing what a mistake W was, in 2004 I supported McCain in the GOP primary, hoping others would as well, but they didn't in enough numbers, so I voted for Keey, nbot because he was a DEM, but because he was NOT Bush.

And if today's republican party platform was anything like their platform in 1860, you might have a point. But it isn't. Republican party was very, very different back then - their platform indicated they wanted a liberal wage for the working man, they wanted to invest in infrastructure, they were willing to institute business regulations and supported an import tax, and they wanted to outlaw a business (slave trading) for ethical reasons no matter what impact it had on other business (southern agriculture). Sound like any political party you know of today?

If this were 1860, Mitt would be a Democrat. If you want to take credit for what the republicans did back then, then go back to those same principles and be the party you were back then. Otherwise, shut up with the history references to more than a century ago and stick to things in our lifetime.

Vietnam was started on a lie just like the Iraq war.

Now we are to go to war with Iran because the republicans love to look tough and besides Cheney the war lobbist for Halliburton wants to be richer.

Romney is nothing more than the new Norquist doofus puppet for the republican party.

Mitt the twit always lives up to his name.

Mitt prove your honest release those tax returns. But knowing Mitt is not honest I don't expect we will be seeing any tax returns anytime soon.

                            slightlyold,

True. President Eisenhower started it in a very small way (advisors only), unforunately, President Kennedy got us fully committed. Not a good thing for sure.

                              #6.9 - Sun Jul 29, 2012 8:57 PM EDT

Slightlyold, Independent is correct, but not entirely. Eisenhower did NOT get us into the Vietnam "conflict" as it was called - media was too PC even back then to admit it was a war - also a conflict doesn't require approval from Congress. But I digress. Eisenhower would NEVER have escalated the involvelment in Vietnam. He was totally against that kind war. Many conservatives of the time were not pleased with him because of his stance of only sending in advisors. His comment when leaving office supports that belief, "beware the industrail miltary complex". However, we now see the folly of both parties. They are BOTH being bought out by the IMC.

True conservatives/libertarians do NOT want war and I will hazard an educated guess that the vast majority of Americans don't want war. We need to be more aware that the IMC lobbyists go after both parties and members of both parties have been and are being "bought" all the time. See the story in the Abrams Tank.

Why did we have LRP's in Vietnam disguised as advisors training South Vietnam soldiers and fighting along side them and out on patrols under Eisenhower? We had a good sized presence in Indochina during his tenure and committed to fighting over there without declaring war. I beg to differ with you analogy of who started the Vietnam War or was responsble for our involvement when we had no business there in the first place. There was no imminent threat to America by farmers in Indochina.

Just like a republican to send others to war when they have not served. Bout time America gets a little ass and starts looking out for Americans. Like Obama is doing he cares about the poor and the middle class. All Willard and the Republicans care about is money and starting yet another war.

If Israel ends up at war with Iran the US will be dragged into it no matter what we try to do to avoid it. So before Romney opens his mouth again his and Anne's five strapping young sons need to visit the nearest recruiting station and enlist - and I don't mean in the Guard or Reserve. I mean full on active duty so they are in the first line to be sent to defend their country. If its his kids at risk, maybe he will be a bit more cautious about giving Netanyahu a green light to do something stupid.

And he may be a spokesman for Romney, but Dan Senor is smarter than this and knows what an Israeli strike would mean for the US.

So this guy who is NOT an elected official at this time, not a Senator, not a Representative, not a governor and hasn't been in an elected position for a long time....does not receive official security briefings from anyone except former CIA agents is overseas acting all Presidential.....well, I think I will go overseas myself and act like I know what I'm talking about. I am so curious as to why this is allowed. Certainly he can go as a tourist and even get a few perks as a former governor but geesh, to have a meeting with an agenda to discuss sensitive issues in one of the most volatile areas of the world? Please, Mr. Romney, just come home and make some more money that will trickle down to me and leave politics. WE DO NOT NEED YOU or your awkwardness as an unofficial diplomat at this time playing President in Israel.

Romney will not start receiving security briefings until after the Republican Convention. But he WILL start receiving them then as the official Republican Candidate.

Romney has placed us in a DANGEROUS situation. He has now openly told a foreign country that we will OFFICIALLY be backing another foreign country to attack if he is elected President. The people who want to elect him need to think about that LONG AND HARD. Think about what this would mean to our country ... we have escaped having any MODERN wars fought on our soil, we will NOT be so lucky again if WWIII erupts. And if Romney is elected, it WILL happen because Iran would attack US. Most of the Middle East would attack us. Frankly, I think if the Republicans are smart they will IMMEDIATELY start considering a different nominee and will NOT make Romney the candidate. Granted, the other potential candidates were WORSE than Romney ... but so far none of them have said that we would support a war starting between Israel and Iran which would inevitably pull us in.

You must have read history books written in Texas. Not one war you mentioned had anything to do with a political party. We responded to attacks by U-Boats in WWI and Pearl Harbor in WWII, We did not declare war on Germany they declared war on us. Korea was a result of an attack by the North on the South and our troops and was backed by the UN security Counsel. Ike, a Republican, sent the first troops to South Asia and set the stage for the Vietnam War. It was conservatives both Democrat and Republican that supported the war it was liberals that tried to stop it. You are telling only half the truth. Half the truth is still a whole pile of BS.

Your only mentioning part of the truth, Bush Lied to get the US for the reason to go to Afghanistan and Iraq. There was NO WMD's. Yes both parties voted for the Iraq war but they were misled, as was the American people. We have this moron, Romney making statements, that only the President should make to Israel.

This guy wont see the light of day in the white house.

This is a major head shaker. Folks, we're witnessing the birth of yet another Republican BAD IDEA!!!!! The last one was Iraq. A war with Iran would make the war with Iraq look like a tea party, irony intended.

This is the type of sabre rattling we heard when Bush was working us up to invading Iraq and it's not healthy. Our armed forces don't deserve this type of crap. The men and women in the military have suffered enough because of bad ideas like this one.

Romney has no business shooting off his mouth like this. He's NOT the POTUS and NOT a diplomat. He needs to shut his pie hole and listen and learn. Something he seems unwilling to do.

This should be a warning to everyone about the Romney foreign policy agenda: Israel's interests will take precedence over US interests and, if that means the US being pulled into a war of Israel's making, then so be it. We do not need someone in the White House who has this overwhelming need to show Bibi how big his pecker is.

Understand something about Israel, or anyone else, taking a shot at Iran's nukes: you are going to have to go into that country on the ground to get them. You will not get them with air strikes because these facilities are underground, inside of mountains. Coastal landing zones become limited in number should Iran come up with a way to cut off the Persian Gulf. Not only are you talking a prolonged ground operation in a mountainous country, you're talking what would probably be the largest guerrilla/insurgent war in history. Read the history of the Iraq/Iran war, and pay particular attention to one word: basij.

Basij volunteers, almost all unarmed, were the human tidal wave which overwhelmed Iraq's troops and ran them out of Iran. Iraq killed over one million of them via conventional and chemical weapons; Iraqi troops still had nine million more of them to deal with after expending nearly their entire arsenal of chemical weapons, along with having no re-supply lines to speak of. More important, the modern suicide bomber's roots trace back to the basij, where a 12 year old Iranian boy became the first documented modern suicide bomber; he picked up two hand grenades, ran toward an Iraqi tank, stopped in front of it, and pulled the pins in attempt to take out the tank. In short, if you try to go in on the ground to get the nukes, expect every man, woman, and child in Iran to be committed to total war.

And now I mention the big wild card: China. China covets and needs Iranian oil. What happens if Israel or the US successfully blows up the nuclear facilities, and Iran's oil fields happen to be down wind of the radiation? Something called World War III! China would be forced to go to war for oil, but they sure as hell are a lot more ready for a war with the US than the US is for a war with China. The numbers do not lie on this fact. Chinese males under age 20 outnumber females of the same age by 32 million, and their only shot to gain economic as well as female opportunities is through war. Simply put, it's a bad idea to find yourself in a war with China that you did not plan for and is an unintended consequence of something else, espcially when China will have an overwhelming advantage in the numbers and motivation departments.

This meeting between Romney and Israeli leader, Netanyahu, by the way a long term friend, seems ominous. First off Romney is a businessman. (Corporate elitist.) Just read this guys bio. He has no sense of the common man. It will be strictly eliitist interests if this guy gets elected. Heads up America, and by the way, I am no Obama fan either. I am voting as an Independant, (Gary Johnson folks) and encourage everyone to do the same, we will be in no better shape with either one of these guys, so whats the difference? Send a message to the political world, we are sick of the 2 party system, which is basically a once choice system.

As long as Mitt is willing to send his five sons into action should Israel bomb Iran and a third world war starts in the middle east. Let them make sacrifices first along with all the sons of other republican and conservative congressmen and women who think that this is such a wonderful idea. How many wars do we need in the middle east before we wipe out our entire population of young men and women here in the United States and for what? Certainly not our national security.

During election time in this country we the voters have to learn how to read between the lines, with what this idiot has said to Israel it shows just how much he and his party really wants more wars. Were already deep in debt because of these warmongers and it has to stop now.

Romney is nothing more than a coward, running to France to avoid being in the military. As far as I see it he shouldn't even be allowed to run for or hold any U.S. office period.

In my opinion all he really is saying to Israel is, yeah you just go right ahead and plan your attack on Iran and will love it, err I mean be there for you so you don't hurt yourself. This guy cannot keep his foot out of his mouth for even a week without making again some idiotic statement and here's the proof.

Sadly we don't have any great choices for our president anymore and this election is scraping the bottom of the barrel on the republicans side.

Other than serving in the Choom gang as a member of the bong brigade, what military service has Obama ever had? NONE. And head of the Choom gang rolling division hardly comes close to qualifying Obama for anything.
