Wheelchair-bound Israeli army veteran dies after setting himself on fire at welfare protest

JERUSALEM - A second Israeli who set himself on fire in protest at economic difficulties has died of his injuries, the hospital treating him said on Wednesday.

Akiva Mafi, a 45-year-old wheelchair-bound army veteran, doused his body in gasoline and lit it at a bus station on July 22, after what friends described as a debilitating battle for welfare benefits.

He was the second such fatality after Moshe Silman, a debt-ridden member of a grassroots movement to lower the cost of living in Israel, self-immolated during a July 14 demonstration in Tel Aviv and died a week later.

An Israeli activist holds placard during a rally in memory of Moshe Silman in Tel Aviv on July 21. Silman died from injuries he suffered after he set himself alight at a demonstration seeking economic reform.

Silman, 57, left a note accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's conservative government of "taking from the poor and giving to the rich." Local media later reported similar suicide bids among others suffering economic hardship.

According to The Jerusalem Post, Mafi had discussed suicide to his family members in the past and talked about "doing what Silman did" in the days before he set himself alight, his brother said.

Shlomo Mafi also said his brother lamented the "impossible bureaucracy" he faced at the defense ministry and with social welfare authorities, the Post reported.

Tel Aviv police arrest 89 demonstrators reviving price protests

Another man attempted to light himself on fire in Jerusalem on Tuesday but a policeman tackled him before he lit the flammable liquid he had poured on himself, The Jerusalem Post reported.

Speaking on Israeli television after his cabinet approved a controversial new package of tax increases and spending cuts on Tuesday, Netanyahu described the self-immolations as tragic but cautioned against "drawing conclusions about the overall populace," which he argued had been spared deeper fiscal crises.

I see the Israeli zionist propagandists are already here al. Is it not surprising that a country based on a religion of murder & greed that gets literally billions of dollars a year in aid for such a very small country and then the leaders are so greedy they do not even allow their own wounded veterans enough to eat and have a simple life. What is the difference between the corrupt leaders in Israel and the ones in African Countries that siphon the money to themselves for sinister reasons(PAYING OFF THE SAME POLITICIANS IN THE USA THAT GAVE THEM THE MONEY IN THE FIRST PLACE)? I do not want my tax dollars going there anymore. F Mitt Romney! The man that did this selfless brave act in an attempt to reign in the corrupt evil Israeli leadership is a HERO and a MARTYR!

Ophotfoot, neither of the two comments, that of al, or the rejoinder from paragus, in any way referenced matters relating to zionism, Israel, or the Palestinian question. al's comment, while a trifle harsh, pointed to the incident as act of "another nut job". The response by paragus, draws implied parallels between the failures of the Israeli government and that of the U.S.A.

What do you derive from these two posts? That the dreaded "Israeli zionist propagandists" are here.

They say you can't reason with crazy. So I won't try.

[long sigh] you had no valid point. You are just another example of the mentality which sees [pick one] zionists, jihadists, communists, homosexuals or tupperware salesmen in every story they read. If the story had been about the weather in Tel Aviv, I believe your response would have been much the same.

A person who takes a story about a unitary suicide of a desperate person, and jumps to Israeli Zionist propagandists, is a person in the grips of an ideological vice so tight that no new idea can enter his head.

I'll ask again, what do either of the two prior posts have to do with zionism?

Al, calls the man a nut. Paragus, says it is the government's fault, just as it is here.

      Your response? Zionism!!!

Crazy does not even cover it.

This pandering repuke dunce is sucking up to the Israelis as he does to the Taliban Christian nutcases here who want to impose their biblical fairy tale Creationism beliefs on everyone. This dunce is losing the jewish vote here 65% to 25%, according to the latest Gallup Poll last weekend, because the jewish people see what a lyin' tax evading draft dodger he is.

Yes, many are pushed over the edge by financial woes, most occurring during the reign of conservative governments. A study headed up by Dr. Mary Shaw with colleagues from the University of Bristol found that the same pattern exists in England as was found in an Australian study. Australian scientists found the suicide rate in the country increased significantly when a Conservative government was in power. This correlates with economic woes for the working class, the poor and the sick.

For me, it correlates as well with the level of empathy as opposed to the level of greed in a society. See: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/2263690.stm

War mongering Israel??? Exactly whom did Israel attack without being attacked first?? From all historical accounts since 1948 Israel has never been proactive in aggression, only defensive.

1948 They were attacked by the Arab Legue lead by the grand mufti to "wipe Israel off of the map."

1969 They were attacked by Syria and Egypt (6 day war).

1973 They were attacked again by Syria and Egypt (yom kippur war)

1983 They were attacked by militants operating out of Southern Lebanon (peace in galilee)

1972 PLO terrorist attacked unarmed Israeli olympic athletes in Munich Germany

1976 PLO terrorists hijacked an airliner with Israeli unarmed citizens and landed in Entebe Uganda

Almost daily terrorists shoot rockets at Israeli civilain targets from Gaza.

So were does WARMONGERING come in??????

This is Israel we are talking about here , not the United States . Israel is a Jewish State under the T-rah which are laws of G-d , not like in the United States where the laws are made to meet the agendas of the arrogant and those who lie and steal the best .

In the Bible what is assused by the dying man is that the PM and Israel is in violation of the laws governing the poor . The poor are supposed to be provided for by the rich and not the other way around . This article if it is reported correctly states it is the other way around .

I personally have asked others to be able to go to Isreal . As a Jew I rather be in a land under the laws of Israel than under the Obama death to senior and the disabled as a fact that is ongoing . I was told I could not get benefits there due to barriers of banking either put up by Israel and or the US. So as a senior here , I could not get any benefits there , such as medical insurance I earned here which is called an entitlement of contract here . Granted the thieves who created the debts want to void the contract as steal more here , but it is still the USA disgrace that this is being done , not Israel . If the same kind of theft is being done in Israel then this is a disease that has to end by G-d , not by man.

So Israel is a country based on laws of god. How is it then that our government can spend tax dollars supporting such a country when our constitution says seperation of church and state? So we can prop up a corrupt Jewish State in the middle east with billions of dollars a year of tax payers money to the government, but we can not say a prayer in school or have a manger scene on public land???? I guess the Zionists won here in the good ole' USA. If there is a constitutional lawyer here please explain how billions a year of our tax dollars can be used for a specific religion and a church state?????????

Our Constitution says nothing about separation of church and state. That is a lie put forth to the masses as a means of destoying religion, which is guaranteed rights by the Constitution. You have been deceived and our once-great Constitution has been altered by the courts until it no longer reflects its intended purpose.

And the Bible says he who curses Abraham (Israel) would be cursed, and he who blesses Abraham (Israel) would be blessed.

          @ tiredofthelunacy

The Constitution says: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or
          prohibiting the free exercise thereof."

If paying billions of tax payers dollars to a religion based country is not respecting an establishment of religion... what is???????

Then the son of god Jesus Christ came and the Jewish Murderers asked him: "Teacher which is the greatest commandment in the law" to which Jesus answered: "Love the lord your god with all your heart and all your soul and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself. All the law and the prophets hang on these two commandments." Matthew 22:36-40.

So the people in Israel are against god, not me. I mean they killed the son of God, and he told pontius Pilate the greatest sin was with the Jews for turning him over to the Romans. Now they are making their own Israeli People burn themselves to death.. Just read Zionist History, nothing has changed.

Ophotfoot, I'm not sure whose ideas are crazier, yours, or those of tiredofthelunacy. We send aid to Israel as a matter of foreign policy. During the cold war they were often our ally and a counterweight to Soviet influence in the area. We also give aid to various Islamic countries, such as Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. We do so because we perceive it to be in our interests.

This does affect the establishment of any religion in the U.S., or prevent you from the free exercise of your own beliefs.

          Grow up.

tiredofthelunacy, take your book of mystical ramblings, tales of divinely-inspired genocide and religious drivel, and stick it where the sun don't shine. This is a secular country, founded by people who wished for the freedom to worship as they pleased. The constitution recognized that fact in the Bill of Rights.

dman you know nothing of how this country was started, read up the men who started this country were christian men who wanted to be free of a monarchy ,and so they founded a christian country ,

Actually, the Pilgrims and Puritans came to New England to escape the Church of England, and to establish a home where they could worship as they pleased. The same is true of the Quakers who settled in Pennsylvania.

While most of these settlers were religious they instinctively distrusted government control of religion, and thus we have the First Amendment, which does clearly state that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;"

The wording is as clear and explicit as any in the Constitution, and has been consistently interpreted by our courts as declaring a separation of Church and State.

Quick, before he has a stroke, somebody explain the secular nature of foreign policy to Ophotfoot, and how a nation makes foreign policy commitments, be they in the form mutual aid pacts, financial aid or military supplies, on the basis of a nation's perceived self-interests. To tie one's hands in matters of foreign policy by declaring that one will only ally oneself with completely secular nations, would be the act of a ideological fool, or an idiot.
If the U.S had been sending aid to Israel, or to Saudi Arabia, with the express purpose of promoting religion, one might find grounds for invoking the First Amendment. We do not. We give aid to Israel [and to many other nations], because we see advantage in strengthening our allies.

The constitution does not say: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, unless it is a foreign policy commitment respecting an establishment of religion".

Answer this: Does the government of Israel control the countries religion?

I don't care. What the Israeli government does, it does not affect my ability to worship as I choose, or if I choose.

If the laws of the country are religion based how can you say that is not a direct violation of the 1st Amendment to give tax dollars to said country?

Because we are not giving aid to Israel [or to Pakistan, Saudi Arabia or Turkey because of their state religions. We are giving the aid in complete disregard of their state religion. Our foreign policy is thus neutral regarding matters of religion.

If we were to exclude Israel [or Pakistan, or Turkey, or Saudi Arabia] from receiving foreign aid on the explicit basis of their state religion, as you seem to advocate, then we might actually be violating our Constitution. We would also be conducting our foreign policy in the manner of a complete idiot.

So you can relax [fat chance], the Constitution is intact.

Wow you are quite the hypocrite. You believe one thing in one post and another thing in the next. You flip-flop more than the last 10 people running for POTUS.

I've said repeatedly that the U.S. is a secular state, but that the secular nature of our society does not preclude us entering into an alliance with, or rendering aid to, any other nation, regardless of their state religion.

Don't let the facts that (1) foreign policy is made by the Executive Branch, per Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution, and merely funded by Congress, and (2) the states of Israel, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and others who receive our foreign aid were established before they received foreign aid keep you from once again stating your position as proof of your position.

Does our country do a lot better job looking after our vets? Why criticize someone else?

Our veterans are not burning themselves alive for food money. Big difference wouldn't you say?? Plenty of people criticize our veteran benefits so your point is really just meaningless. If you lived in our country and paid any attention to veterans groups you would know this.

Yes OUR vets commit suicide in less flashy ways. With guns and drugs and the such.

Our country supports the Israeli democracy and welfare state and all the rest. It's only natural to be interested in how they're doing.

In this area, not so good, it would appear. In our case, I'm sure many an American vet feels some resonance with these Israelis.

                  Ass kissin Willardo.

All braindead pathetic right wing radical cracked teanuts should listen to your leaders.

Rick the Dick Santarium has brainwashed his followers, the evangelical Children of the Corn zombies and the gay rapist, pedophile catholic priests that lyin' Willardo is a member of an evil cult and is the anti-christ. He also told them that lyin Willardo is the worst person in history to ever run for the presidency, can't be trusted and will destroy our country. Groper Nutquist, the boss of the right wing cracked teanuts and Nut Gingerhead, trhe criminal lobbyist, totally agreed with the last three assessments.

So most of the evangelical sheep will probably stay home on election day or some may even vote for Obama. They are totally scared to death of lyin Willardo, the Mexican Mormon Moron tax evader, bankrupter, job outsourcer, draft dodger and Etch A Sketch champion.

If this repuke draft dodger ever became president, and war broke out in the middle east, he will be putting his dog on the top of his car and fleeing to his birthplace in Tijuana and hide in one of his 4 grandmammy's (daddy's side only) outhouses.

@ FedupwithFed… This might be difficult to comprehend, when a President states “All options are on
the table” that means military action which by the way every President has quoted and/or stated. Besides America’s destiny is not tied to Israel’s success… We have been siding with and discussing Israel for over 60 years!! Are we crazy?

To all of people who brought up Zionism and called Israel evil. Why even bring this up? I am a Muslim, I am opposed to Zionism, support Palestinian cause, BUT I feel terrible for this man. Whether we support his country or not, he served his country and his country left him neglected. It has nothing to do with Zionism, oppression of Palestinians or any of that stuff. It has to do with a poor man who was driven to death by government that refused to take care of him. I often see people making cruel comments when the news tell about killed Palestinians. Now I see that the same kind of people talk crap commenting an article about a dead Israeli. Don't you people have any humanity left in you? Forget if the person is an Arab or a Jew for a moment. This is our fellow human being. Don't bring the conflict that has nothing to do with this article into discussion, please. Whichever side you support it's a shame to use a poor man's death as an excuse to bring this up. Peace.

Alhamdulillah, I am a Muslim. And Abdallah, careful with throwing accusations around. You should know that there is a sahih hadith of the Prophet (SAWS). Narrated by Abu Dhar, that he heard the Prophet (SAWS) saying, "If somebody accuses another of Fusuq or accuses him of Kufr, such an accusation will revert to him (i.e. the accuser) if his companion (the accused) is innocent." (Sahih Bukhari). Just because my opinion is different from yours on the issue of this poor man does not make me a fake Muslim. I don't care if this man is a Jew. He was neglected by the government he once served and it drove him to kill himself. It is sad. Now how is being sad for a fellow human being makes me a bad Muslim or a fake Muslim? Please provide proof from Qur'an and Hadith that feeling bad for a crippled, neglected person who ends up killing himself because of that neglect puts me outside of Islam.

Yet, the right wing radical cracked teanuts like John McCain, Sister Sarah and lyin Willardo, the Mexican Mormon Moron tax evader, bankrupter, draft dodger, job outsourcer and Etch A Sketch champion want us to unilateraly attack Syria. These repukes dopes never learn.

Here is how Sister Sarah, the great American Zero, can help us invade Syria and attack the Syrian Government. She can be part of the invasion force.

We have to attack the radical Islamists before it is too late, without putting our soldiers in harms way.

The best way is to send the right wing radical cracked teanuts over there to fight. First let Sister Sara attack from the front in her helicopter gunship where she is experienced in shooting wolves from the air with her blazing AK47, turns them into instant wolfburgers. Then get the other dunce, the flying witch from Delaware, Christine O Donnell. to attack their flanks using her rocket powered, heavily armed broomstick. Then the macho nut Rick Sanitarium can get his boss, the Pope's boys, the rapist, pedophile catholic priests to attack from the rear. John (town cryer) Bonehead and Mitch McDumbell can direct operations. Groper Nutquist could be the sniper, as all he has to do is lift the lid from his trash can and fire away.

Harold Camping, the evangelical king, can assist by getting the 500,000 or so braindead evangelical Children of the Corn, that he brainwashed to give up all of their worldly possessions to go meet and stay with the man in the sky. These zombies would not care if they died because they would finally get to meet and stay with the man in the sky. Camping can supply them with bibles to throw at the Islamists with some of the millions he bilked these fools out of.

If they still need more help, we can recruit the right wing centrists: the abortion clinic bombers, federal building bombers, abortion doctor killers and the radical right wing southern anthrax spreaders. With this army of right wing nuts and Jesus Freaks, we save our real army for another day.

Ron (Puke) Paul can preach liberty to the Islamics and Muslims who he loves. Maybe lyin Willardo, the Mexican Mormon Moron tax evader can get some of his buddies that he grew up with in Tijuana to volunteer to help also.

Any prisoners that are taken can be sent to Nut Gingerheads 2 trillion dollar moon colony on an unihabitable planet. There is no atmosphere there, so no oxygen and only traces of water. It is hotter than boiling water there during the day and it goes down to 160 degrees below zero at night. In fact, it so nice there, that we should also send the 4 repuke clowns that are want to be president there also. Ron (Puke) Paul can preach liberty to the men in the moon, lyin Willardo can establish an off planet moon bank to hide his money, Nut Gingerhead can destroy the moon peoples housing market, and the Pope's boy, Sanitarium can try to find work for his base, the rapist, pedophile catholic priests and braindead evangelical Children of the Corn.

If the right wing cracked teanuts want to beat Obama they need new candidates. Cain/Sandusky in 2012. These two are their best family values candidates. .Who cares what they did in the past, they are against abortion, that is all that counts to these nuts.

Can you imagine what might have happened if the Pope's boy Rick the Dick Sanitarium became president, or even V.P. under lyin Willardo, the tax evader, of the right wing radical cracked teanuts, the gay, rapist, pedophile catholic priests and the braindead evangelical Children of the Corn zombies. Men will no longer have to purchase condoms, as they will no longer be allowed in this country. All mens sperm must be used to create babies. Cameras will be in every bedroom. Catholic priests don't have to worry however, because, according to the testimony of former raped little boys, they don't use them.

The Pope's first order to his boy would be to release all catholic rapist pediophile priests from prison as the Pope is running out of people to continue the process of shearing his sheep. He is running out of collection pot fillers. After all, he needs the money to fight off all of the lawsuits against the church worldwide.

His second order to RickyDickyDo would be to move the White House to Vatican City.

Worry about our own criminals first. Put this guy in handcuffs.

The only reason people open overseas numbered bank accounts is to evade taxes on unreported income. It is estmated by some, that lyin Willardo, the Mexican Mormon Moron tax evader, bankrupter, draft dodger, job outsourcer and Etch a Sketch champion has hidden about 32 million in numbered accounts in the Cayman Islands and Switzerland. Unnamed workers at these banks sent this info to the IRS.

Hopefully, they will arrest this right wing criminal tax evader before the election.

This is why he won't release the last 5 years of his tax returns. It could possibly show not only that he did not pay any taxes in some years, but that much of his overseas income was never reported.

I wonder if that is where he keeps his Mexican birth certficate also

Any senior or anyone else on medicare who votes for a pathetic, psychotic, facist repuke for president is cutting their own throat. Your medicare costs will go up about $6,000 a year, and your secondary insurance will skyrocket. This is according to the CBO. The National Council of Bishops who support the lying repukes only because of abortion, have highly criticized the Ryan voucher plan as being cruel and harsh and can't support it. It gives an average $250,000 tax cut to millionaires while cutting medicare.

There is a group of nuns travelling around the country who call themeselves "Nuns on a Bus". Their goal is to correct all the false information and lies spread by Paul Ryan that his plan is going help anyone but the wealthiest 2%. They also claim the the Ryan plan is a disaster for the poor and needy people in this country and that you should vote against the republicans.

Once the medicare funds get into the hands of the repukes corporate criminal backers, it will be destroyed.

Repukes are typical right wing dunces that listen to Fox Lies with Eric Bowleggs, David Asswipes and The Sludge. Even Miss Piggy has more brains than these braindead repukes, as she knows that Faux News is only a pretend news channel and is only a poor excuse for a comedy channel.

There had to be a reason that Rick the Dick Sanitarium and Nut Gingerhead, the criminal lobbyist both agreed that lyin Willardo is the worst person to ever run for president in U.S. history, that he can't be trusted and will destroy our country.

They both brought Etch A Sketch boards to their news conferences to prove their points.

Outing the forked tongue repuke dunce.

Lyin Willardo, the Mexican Mormon Moron tax evader, bankrupter, Etch A Sketch Champion, job outsourcer and draft dodger may be the worst repuke dunce of all. This guy has yet to provide his tax returns for the last 5 years. It should show how much he has evaded in taxes and how much unreported income he has stashed away in Cayman Island and Swiss bank accounts. He is your typical right wing thief.

There have been many rumors going around that little lyin Willardo was seen in a baby carriage in Tijuana. with a bottle of Corona Light in one hand and an Etch A Sketch in the other. The side of his carriage had the name "Little Lyin Willardo" on it. So when we see the long form of his birth certificate and it says Willardo on it and not Willard, we will know something is wrong.

Isn't it funny, that his new buddy Fox Top Trump never asked lyin Willardo for a copy of it?

What a joke. Less and less of the stupid right wing nuts come out to back lyin Willardo, the Mexican Mormon Moron tax evader and bankrupter and they rave about it. As most people know, the evangelicals consider the mormons an evil anti-christ cult. The mormons have been converting dead jewish people, without their knowledge to become mormons to enhance their religion. They baptise them when they are dead. These sick aholes were caught when they tried to convert Anne Frank to be a mormon. The Church of the Latter Day Saints has now ordered these mormon priests to cease this immediately.

These repuke dunces best bet is to bring back Herman (9Kampf) Cain, the dress slitherer. He can draft Jerry Sandusky for V.P. Who cares what they have done in the past, they are against abortion, that is all that counts.

CAIN/SANDUSKY 2012. The true repuke family values candidates.

I believe the buddihst began the self immolitation when they became persecuted by the south vietnamese government in the 1960's, thats where I remember it from anyway.

                                                      Depressed Americans just kill themselves.

Depressed muslims kill everyone within a 150 yard blast radius.....

I see the Arab spring is catching on in israel. This is how it all started, merchant struggling to make ends meet in Tunisia set himself on fire, then domino effect. israel always gave this unshakeable image, the country is about to implode on its own... I am afraid they will come to us and cry and play victim, that everybody hates them and ask for another Billion $ to cover their shortfalls, and that our "oh so smart" lawmakers, just to be re-elected, will agree and give them more money (it has already reached $5 Billion a year). That way israel is taken care of but not us Americans. On a side note, someone needs to remind our lawmakers that they work for us and not for israel...

Are you OK with spending money on Afghanistan and Iraq then?

Happy, I am furious with sending billions to Afganistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Egypt, etc, etc, and oh yes, Israel too. We need to fix up our crappy nation first before we dole out Welfare to these other nations. If these nations would trim their military spending they would have money to take care of themselves.

You'll never see any of Mitt's boys in this predicament. First of all none of the entire family has ever served, secondly they have enough $ in their offshore bank accounts to fund Isreal all by themselves, which it sounds like he would do if needed.

Lets go Mitt, lets have another War where everyone dies except any Romneys.

It's too bad it had to come down to this, when you feel that killing yourself is your only option. I guess the US will need to increase the billions that we give to Israel to cover their vets cost of living expenses. Coming soon to a campaign trail near you.

                                                          Trouble is paradise?

                                                          The clock is ticking.

The zionist experiment is drawing to a close, and from the look of things it may fall not at the hands of outsiders, but at it's own.

Is it any wonder that a Theocracy turns on it's own?

I look forward to them biting off more of Iran than they can chew. The last war they started lasted six days, with ramifications of it lasting for half a century

I suspect the next one may last six minutes, with ramifications for the area that last 25,000 years.

It is only fitting that the "Holy Lands" of the past few centuries become the "Waste Lands" of the next few.

War between them is a Win / Win for modernity, and I look forward to watching it on Cable!

we need to worry about our people first. this is crazy to keep supporting countries that don't do anything for us. Does anyone on here know what they do for us in exchange for all the billions that we send to them
