This photo released by Shaker Aamer's family shows the Guantanamo Bay detainee holding two of his children. Aamer was arrested in Afghanistan in 2001 but has never been put on trial at Gitmo.
LONDON -- British police will examine allegations that U.K. intelligence officials were complicit in the alleged torture of a prisoner at Guantanamo Bay.
It could lead British detectives to ask the U.S. government for permission to interview Shaker Aamer at the detention center in Cuba.
Aamer's case is one of three that are to be considered by detectives with London's Metropolitan Police Service (MPS). The investigations are understood to include allegations against officials with Britain's MI6 and MI5 intelligence services.
Despite President Obama's vow to shut down Guantanamo Bay, the nation's most expensive prison is undergoing some costly new updates that would allow the facility to remain open for years. NBC's Michael Isikoff reports.
The decision was made by a joint Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and Metropolitan Police panel. Earlier this year, the panel decided detectives should investigate claims of British involvement in the ill treatment of two Libyan men and their families.
How I see America, from a former Gitmo prisoner
Aamer is the last remaining British national held at Guantanamo Bay. He says that he has been subjected to torture including sleep deprivation, stress positions and other forms of mistreatment.
The allegation is that British officials visited him, or asked questions, while aware of his treatment.

Aamer is a Saudi Arabian citizen but is a legal permanent resident of the U.K. He is married to a British woman with four children living in London.
He was arrested in Afghanistan in 2001 and taken to Guantanamo Bay, he has never been put on trial there. He has long been cleared for release, according to the charity Reprieve.
His U.S.-based lawyer Cori Crider told NBC News: "This is a positive development. What has happened to Shaker was appalling and we look forward to cooperating with the police."
'Tortured' Gitmo prisoner seeks release of secret videos
In a statement, the Crown Prosecution Service said: "On January 12, 2012, the DPP [Director of Public Prosecutions] announced that a joint CPS and MPS scoping panel would convene to assess a number of allegations of complicity to torture made against British officials.
"The panel has now had the opportunity to sit and, having assessed 12 cases, it has referred three to the MPS to consider further investigation. The MPS has decided to undertake further investigation into these three cases.
"Legal representatives for those making the allegations are aware of the panel's assessments and officers from the MPS are seeking, where possible, to meet with those that have made allegations in order to explain the individual decisions."

Don't forget the Criminal ring leaders, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice...
Hey 800....., you forgot to mention Nancy Pelousy and other democrats who were made aware of plans to use enhanced interrogation, (which is not torture I might add). They did not raise any objection to these techniques. Not to mention the fact that democrats were in lock-step through the whole process of the Afghanistan / Iraq war, until they decided to politicize the war for their own selfish political gain at the expense of the troops and the US as a whole. Never let facts get in the way of scoring cheap political points.
2 or 200 wrongs NEVER make 1 right. Unless it's 1 right winger--perhaps?
But three rights equals one left.
hard, torture is still torture, try the water boarding. Bad for your health.
Sky....., water boarding does not harm you. It is unpleasant for sure but is otherwise harmless. Water boarding is not torture. Ripping out or driving bamboo under finger nails out is torture, electric shock is torture, breaking bones or teeth is torture, beating is torture, arguing with with the left is torture. Comparing water boarding to torture is like comparing a 15 mph breeze to a tornado.
Hummmmmmmmmmmm hardtostarboard Water boarding is not torture? ..LOL ... tell us all that after it is done to you!
Your statement disagrees with the "experts" .. Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterboarding
One sided justice.
These Islamic militants can blow up innocents, children and women anywhere they like. They don't follow any laws.
When it comes to them, they want all laws of earth to be applied.
Are there bigger cases of one-way street traffic and justice?
Of 779 men detained at Guantanamo more than 600 have been released - the overwhelming majority without charge.
Of the remaining 168 around half have been cleared for release but remain due to repatriation problems.
48 have been determined 'too dangerous to transfer but not feasible for prosecution'. (Imagine if that same classification was made for an American [civilian or soldier] in a Russian, Chinese or Saudi jail - especially after 11 previous years of uncharged incarceration.)
I acknowledge that there were some serious dangerous hardcore terrorists/ enemy combatants such as Kalid Sheikh Mohammed who deserve to feel the full force of the law but many of the prisoners clearly weren't.
Donald Rumsfeld sent a memo as early as 2003 stating "We need to stop populating Guantanamo Bay (GTMO) with low-level enemy combatants ... GTMO needs to serve as an [redacted] not a prison for Afghanistan."
(Be curious to know what was redacted.)
In 2010, Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson, a former aide to Secretary of State Colin Powell, stated in an affidavit that top U.S. officials, including George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, and Donald Rumsfeld, had known that the majority of the detainees initially sent to Guantánamo were innocent, but that the detainees had been kept there for reasons of political expedience. (from Wikipedia)
In the case of the 9 British detainees each has continued to protest their innocence and has proferred reasons for travelling to Afghanistan as being furthering Islamic studies or visiting family - neither of which are considered remotely suspicious if, for example, an Italian-American Catholic visits Italy.
Lastly, why should we (in my case the British) apply the law properly against suspected terrorists or enemy combatants? Because we are 'civilized' and believe in the rule of law and, ultimately, to prove that 'we' are not 'them'.
If they're guilty we have nothing to fear from doing things properly.
So I don't get why this was not kept quiet until the final resolution particularly as it involves law enforcement doing their job. If they are guilty of something then there is time ahead to place blame. Perhaps, if they are going to disclose information they should also disclose any attacks that were averted in GB with intel from those held at Gitmo and in secret prisons. England has certainly had their share of attacks particularly in London along with airport attacks that was handled very well by the security forces that be in England, there was the failed attack of August 2006 that was to inclued massive casualties. So instead of hearing what big bad western world did to supposed terrorists we need to start hearing which attacks were averted and by whom. MI5 and MI6 have done a stellar job of protecting the people in GB. Perhaps, we should get to hear about the victories that they have had in the face of adversity and the hero's that were doing their job.
Those who have been proven to be terrorists and who have provided intel while still surviving their ordeal are from the same cloth as those who beheaded Daniel Pearl, flew planes into American buildings, who attacked the London underground in 2005. These criminals don't abide by any Geneva condition or belong to any country. They should not be afforded any benefit of the civilized world because they behave as less than animals.
If this guy has been cleared for release then why has he not been returned to the UK or Saudi? There is more to this that the defense does not wish to disclose to make their client look like an innocent man at the expense of the men and women who are protecting their societies from attack.
Some of the internees at Guantanamo bay haven't been returned to their countries because their countries refuse to accept them back.
They don't know what kind of psychological damage might have been inflicted while their citizen was being held. They don't know if the person has been brainwashed. For some, they were turned over to the Americans as 'terrorists' by their own government because they were political activists or dissidents in their country and their government simply wanted to get rid of them and get some money in return (there were monetary rewards offered for the capture of those who may have had a hand in 9/11).
So for some of the detainees in Guantanamo Bay, they are simply stuck. We refuse to allow them into our country, but their countries won't accept them back, so there is nothing that can be done with them except keep them in indefinite detention, even if they are cleared of all charges and are no longer under suspicion by the government of terrorist attacks/actions.
For some of the people, they may have not been terrorists or even had any opinion of the West before they were captured, renditioned, tortured, kept in prison. Is it at all surprising that they don't like the US or its allies after all that ?
Ah, the George Bush Presidency, it just keeps giving gifts that will continue to bless us for generations to come.
Amanda not really...The reason some have not been returned is that they are guilty of crimes in their home country and they may be facing the death penalty. So we ask other countries to take them. Other countries really do not wish to take the worst case individual.
As far as I am aware no Guantanamo detainee has refused to be released. A number have had problems being repatriated because they are not wanted back (specifically Chinese Uyghur prisoners who want independence for their territory mainly because of the Chinese persecution of them for both their ethnicity and their religion).
More than 600 Guantanamo detainees have been released, mainly, without charge. Rumsfeld himself, in 2003, described them as low-level combatants and, in 2010, Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson (aide to Colin Powell during his time in office) stated in an affidavit that top US officials including George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, and Donald Rumsfeld, had known that the majority of the detainees initially sent to Guantánamo were innocent, but that the detainees had been kept there for reasons of political expedience.
The last British detainee, Shaker Aamer, wouldn't be worried about the death penalty in the UK as we have long-since dispensed with it.
When dealing with the type of people that will kill innocent women and children on American soil one must take into concideration the mindset of that ignorance and realize being nice gets you nowhere when trying to abtain information.
And neither does torture. Proven fact. All you need do is ask yourself what YOU would do if tortured. You'd say ANYTHING you could possibly think of just to make it STOP. You would. Any human would. Just a fact.
If you don't believe me, be tortured. Then get back to me.
Can't believe that Guantanamo is still open, what a waste of money and time...what information could these prisoners still have? They should execute these prisoners or free them, either way this can't go on forever.
Well, you see, if they close it, then one of President Obama's goals would be fulfilled, and the Republicans can't allow that. They think we are better off spending millions of dollars each year, just to maintain the priority of getting "that man" out of the Whitehouse.
Agreed, still it must costs millions to keep that place open. There is no more information being gathered because most of those guys brains turned to mush long ago, Obama should have fulfilled that pledge and closed that place down and really gave them something to talk about. We have plenty of Prisons on US soil that these people could be sent to.
Pander to the lying weasel Obama much Harle & dirp? He could have closed Gitmo years ago, like he promised, but no he didn't, and I doubt he will. I don't know that even now the republicans could stop him from closing it tomorrow if he chose to. But I see you learned well from the master, blame it all on someone else.
Why is this man being held if he's been cleared, 10 + years of incarceration, incredible, either charge him or let him go. Send him back to Britain. The Brits will watch him until he dies of old age. This is terrible to lock people up and not try them either in civilian court or military tribunal. Send the guy home.
Right on the money skyparrot, let the Brits care for him. I could not imagine being held INDEFINITELY after being cleared of a crime, Obama should have closed this place years ago and sent these people back to their countries of origin, if they decide to become terrorist again that's on them. We free prisoners over here everyday, imagine holding people beyond their sentence because of fear of them committing new crimes?
Guantanamo Bay Prison is a "Lightning Rod" for all Muslims around the world; from the time of their birth, the older people program the younger people, about such things as Guantanamo....... What are we, in the United States or Britain, gaining?.............. Karzai enjoys being paid literally Billions of U.S. Dollars, put these people located at Guantanamo, in a building in Kabul, Afghanistan next to Karzai..... He is of their culture and they will all get along well.
Any investigation will be controlled by those in power as will the answers from it that are then passed to the public. Of course anything the public hears be generalised and non-specific. This is a government investigating itself.
"British police will examine allegations that U.K. intelligence officials were complicit in the alleged torture of a prisoner at Guantanamo Bay."
It is good to know that British follow democratic rights, believe in justice and probes on allegations. Hope they understand about freedom of speech too.
British are holding Olympics games, first time in the history, with missile shields all around, high security checks and snooping into personal details including Internet.
Are they not violations of democratic rights and freedom of speech?
Before all these British drama likes probes, people need a bigger probe on how they got into this big mess!
At least for their own good, they can take corrective measures!
Let the British come down to 21st century from their empire days' attitudes.
I love all you jackos that say no more information is being gathered there. I am sure you all work there right? You must have first hand information? Do you really think the government would let you (the public) know what they find out? And quit your liberal pu$$y complaining, they are not holding this guy for the fun of it. It is amazing how all of you ding bats criticize many of the unsung people that keep you safe everyday, and you never will know it. They don't get praise, they don't talk about it, they just do it. If you hate it so much, get the F*** out of the U.S., we don't need your worthless, mouth breather a$$ here, nor do we want it!
I am one of those liberal pu$$ies you are complaining about, Jobu, or at least an independent one. Ironically, I am on your side here. It sounds to me like they had a good reason to detain Begg. What kind of worthless human being promotes a religious war financially and professionally, and deliberately puts his wife and children in danger by moving them into a country where women's rights are violated on a daily basis (regarding Begg moving his family to the Pakistan/Afghanistan border, and then into Kabul.) I worked in a bookstore at the time of the whole Satanic Verses debacle, and took a phone call that turned out to be a bomb threat. And this guy is whining that his freedoms were being abused? BS.
Good to see that the UK has the courage to investigate their war crimes, unlike America.
So city policeman have authority over a government security agency? That is a laugh, and also somewhat distrubing.
