Subscribe to RSSBEIJING -- A teenager killed eight people with a knife and wounded five more in northeast China after falling out with his girlfriend, state media said Thursday.
The teen killed two of her family members and six more people before fleeing, the state-run Legal Daily newspaper said. It reported he was caught but did not describe the circumstances.
The official Xinhua News Agency said the attack took place Wednesday night in Liaoning province. Media said the 17-year-old suspect is from Fushun city and his surname is Li. The attack happened in Yongling town.
Police in Xinbin county, which oversees the town, declined to comment.
Violent crimes are growing more common in China. There was a string of knife attacks against schoolchildren across the country in early 2010 that killed nearly 20 and wounded more than 50.

saying guns are responsible for killing is like saying pencils are responsible for misspelled words, cars cause drunk driving, and spoons make people fat.
Not if you think about it for more than 10 seconds... pencils were not designed to misspell words, cars were not designed for drunk driving, and spoons were not designed to make people fat... guns however were designed to kill people.
Guns are still an inanimate object with no thought process of their own. They become deadly when handled by a person. Just like that knife.
That doesn't mean guns = knives... unless yours can shoot multiple knives per second at range.... What merits control is not that people could use them badly... its the rate and speed in which they can kill people.
Yes, you can cause incredible mayhem with a few bottles of gasoline - it is always the people who cause harm, not the tools they use.
I rather that psycho be armed with a knife than a automatic weapon he bought at the gun store around the corner. I think the people in the situation described above would agree with me.

You can't legislate bad things away this is true... but to totally claim the tools these evil people use does not make a significant difference is just plain ignorance and silliness.

Mire, the only "guns" that I know of that can be fired multiply per second are FULLY AUTOMATIC MACHINE GUNS, which are strictly licensed and taxed. The guns that Whatsisname used in Aurora were perfectly legal SEMIAUTOMATIC weapons that can only be fired multiply per second by extremely expert marksmen, else they tend to jam and become unfireable.
If you're going to tell a lie, at least make it a believeable lie.

I'm not trying to tell people what they can and can't own, I own guns myself... what i have a problem with is people trying to dismiss the gun situation with totally dumbed down statements.
Us as Americans should always be discussing where to draw the line to preserve our 2nd amendment rights and to have a degree of public safety. Gun control is not totally out of the question, we already have laws that say we can't own things like rocket launchers and tanks, while our automatic weapons are heavily regulated. I for one can not see a reasonable probable reason why I would need a assault rifle over my other guns to defend myself. But thats just me, I don't feel like men with black armor, masks, and guns will show up at my house to harm my family.

i dont think you understand that automatic guns cant just be bought in your local wal-mart or gun store. only the very few and select get the rights to purchase full auto with a proper FEDERAL licence. guns dont kill people, people kill people... control the out of control population and it will in return, control the crimes.

Our murder rate is 30 times Germany and Englands which have gun control laws and most are committed with guns. Either the availability of guns is the reason or our people are a lot more messed up.

The Chinese government sterilizes women everyday and murders unwanted female babies by the thousands. They are probably applauding this unintentional population control.
Didn't read the article, huh? It's not one such incident. Knife attacks have been happening with more frequency. There was a rash of knife attacks against school children, with 20 dead and over 50 wounded.
Irrational people, especially killers, will always find a way.
I am surprised tha China would let a negative story out to the open press. By the way a #2 pencil can be used as a deadly weapon as long as a crazy person intends to use it as a deadly weapon. A pencil is a pencil, but crazy is just crazy.

Better ban all metal knives, axes, shovels, pitch forks, sledge hammers, etc. - - maybe have just plastic ones available OR make each individual be responsible for their own actions and not blame the behavior on the ex-girl, mama, shrink, etc.
This is the fault of the NRA and their knife toting cohorts in Congress. When are we going to stand up to this senseless violence and impose better knife control laws? How many knives does a person need anyway. These things are for cutting only they serve no purpose. Repeal the second amendment. Only soldiers should have knives.

As good as Asians seem to be, the only thing I'll say is that when it comes to mass shootings, that Scandinavian guy is in a league all by himself. Must be that Viking heritage.

Read some history on China, Korea and Japan. They were all feudal states that kept the common people disarmed. It was regular policy that after a war where masses of citizens were given swords and such, that the regular army would go out and go house to house to take all weapons away from them. That was happening two thousand years ago to today. They know about how to control billions of people with brutality. The common martial arts weapons are often derived from farm tools. And yes, certain common knives were taken from the people. The earlier comment about butter knives is not far from the truth.

This is a tragedy no matter where it happens. It causes me to think back to my International students from China and how their parents were so fearful about allowing their son coming to America where it was legal to own guns. The incident at Columbine High School was fresh. I responded to the student that the incident at Coumbine was an isolated incicent and that considering the number of high schools in the US, it made world news because it was so rare. I told him that if someone really wanted to kill someone, they didn't need a gun, there are many forms of homocide. After that time were the incidents in the preschools in China.
Guns and knives do not kill people, they are used as instruments in accomplishing what people are normally determined to do anyway. Think about it. If you really want to kill someone guns and knives are not necessary.

Did you know that women used to wear hats, big hats. Their hair fashion was to keep it long, but to wear it up and under a hat. They used these long Hat pins that ranged from 6 to about 12 inches long. Imagine a 12 inch pin passing through your liver.
These were banned by law because Irate women would use them to express their displeasure with men. So, no more hat pins, and no more hats because the wind would carry them away.

I guarantee you that if he had access to an assault rifle with high capacity magazines to load into it there'd be a hell of lot more dead than just 8 people.
If you are the kind of guy that is in the NRA, you're not running away from a knife attack any better than you are from a gun attack, so you might as well say knives are the same as guns.
Anyone who is trained in close combat, knows that a knife is just as deadly as a gun at close range. Possibly even more so. What I am wondering is how deranged the 17 year old is for doing this knowing the laws of China and the use of public executions. However, I remember as a 18 year old in the army, that I was invincible and the smartest person on the planet at the same time.

Walk to the nearest wall and start beating your head against it until you feel blood trickling out of your ears and you can't remember who the President is. Then after an "Obama-free" week, watch your loved ones love you again, or yourself start getting friends, or maybe even a date.

Fix it man you see those Chinese are not as sexually confused as us Americans. When the headline said after fight with girlfriend they assumed that you knew the other party was a male. You did catch a lot there, I couldn't tell where he was fleeing from; the state run newspaper or just fleeing.
Read the article, the boy (he) killed his girlfriend's (her) family. Fact is, a gun would have made noise and alerted everyone that something was going on. I wonder also how many murders there are in China and other countries that are secretive?

We all know it's guns that kill people and China has strict gun control. So why would this kid use a knife and commit this horrible massacre?
My guess is that an evil American gun was talking to this innocent kid in China through an internet chat room or something. Somehow the gun knew he couldn't get to China so he persuaded this kit to hate his family members over time, eventually the kid and the gun and the innocent kid on the same page, I'm sure the gun told the kid to use the knife as well as where and how to do it.
What we need to do is hire more TSA agents and put them in your living room to keep you safe and to monitor your internet communications as well as steal all your guns and give them to Mexican drug cartels to keep you safe.
China is historically known for its purges of the Prisons where thousands are rounded up and take a one way trip, much like Russia. Many of the prisoners are political but many are just undesirable such as drug dealers or dissidents. I will say that China has come a long way forward in the Human rights questions. The largest standing Army in the history of mankind is a good reason for its nay Sayers within the country to just get along.
The huge territory of China is the reason there were so many war lords and should the strong military presence end in China, I guarantee that Chaos would soon take control with the rebirth of violent sadistically leaders all over because that is the basic human condition. Take away guns and people will use a knife, take the knives, and they use sticks or rocks. History does not lie. This kid was probably thinking more of dying, than killing. The girlfriend broke his heart and being despondent, he chose to take as many with him as possible.
The dirtbag in colorado had superior armanent and could have killed hundreds with his explosives combined with the firepower. He did not go there and I wonder why? He gave up instead of suicide. Crazy is as crazy does.

At least in China they have gun control so when someone goes nuts, they only can get a hold of a knife. I think a lot more people would have been killed had the kid had access to a gun.
