BEIJING - China's Foreign Ministry has called in a senior U.S. diplomat to protest remarks by the U.S. State Department raising concerns over tensions in the disputed South China Sea.
In a statement released late on Saturday, China's Foreign Ministry said Assistant Foreign Minister Zhang Kunsheng summoned the U.S. Embassy's Deputy Chief of Mission Robert Wang to make "serious representations" about the issue.
The State Department on Friday said it was monitoring the situation in the seas closely, adding that China's establishing of a military garrison for the area runs "counter to collaborative diplomatic efforts to resolve differences and risk further escalating tensions in the region."
The South China Sea has become Asia's biggest potential military flashpoint as Beijing's sovereignty claim over the huge area has set it against Vietnam and the Philippines as the three countries race to tap possibly huge oil reserves. Beijing and Washington are already at odds over numerous issues, including the value of China's currency, Tibet and Taiwan.
Zhang said the U.S. statement "disregarded the facts, confused right with wrong, sent a seriously wrong signal and did not help with efforts by relevant parties to maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea or the Asia Pacific.
"China expresses its strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition, urges the U.S. side to immediately to mend the error of its ways, earnestly respect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity and do more to genuinely benefit stability and prosperity in the Asia Pacific," he added.

A separate statement by ministry spokesman Qin Gang repeated that China had absolute sovereignty over the sea and its myriad islands and had every right to formally set up a city to administer the region, which it did last month.
"Why does the U.S. turn a blind eye to the facts that certain countries opened a number of oil and gas blocks, and issued domestic laws illegally appropriating Chinese islands and waters?" Qin said.
"Why does the U.S. avoid talking about the threats of military vessels to Chinese fishermen by certain countries and their unjustified claims of sovereignty rights over Chinese islands?" he added.

In all, six parties have rival claims to the waters, which were a central issue at an acrimonious ASEAN regional summit last month that ended with its members failing to agree on a concluding statement for the first time in 45 years.
The stakes have risen in the area as the U.S. military shifts its attention and resources back to Asia, emboldening its long-time ally the Philippines and former foe Vietnam to take a bolder stance against Beijing.
The United States has stressed it is neutral in the long-running maritime dispute, despite offering to help boost the Philippines' decrepit military forces. It says freedom of navigation is its main concern about a waterway that carries $5 trillion in trade -- half the world's shipping tonnage.

Neutral or not, the US better be willing to back up its words with actions on this one. China is not going to be threatened by the normal " you better not " or " there will be consequences for" talk.
This is where we do what we say. If we are neutral, then that is the stance we take. If we are there to help China's rivals, then it needs to be declared NOW..
Either way, the US and the Philippines are joined at the hip politically and militarily since WW1. These waters and Islands definitely ARE withing the jurisdiction of the Philippines and a long ways from any Chinese settlements. I believe there will be boats sunk before this argument is over, and the Chinese have proven they are stubborn enough to start it.
Asian sea is Asian sea. It is not American sea. War with China, get ready for the trade to plummit. Say goodbuy to the Iphones, ipods, washing machines, cars, and clothes. Watch all the big companies to bankrupt and as soon as the companies go bankrupt, the military will go bankrupt soon.
China is a huge country and it needs huge sea. Vietnam, Taiwan and Japan are tiny countries so they get tiny seas.
Militarilly,China could not take care of Vietnam 20 years ago. They too have problems that liberals refuse to look at.The libs are so in love with China they don't see the massive domestic problems China faces from its economic slowdown. The problems are a lot more acute than whats going on in America. The lefts just can't wait until America fails. The Progressives have been waiting since the 1920's for this.Don't count America out too soon.If everyone remembers in the 1980's Japan was set to past the USA and become the worlds' largest economy.Didn't happen. If China starts fairly competing by letting the yuon rise and fall with other world currency rather than artificially setting its value, they would come near to collapsing!
You act like America has no contact with manufacturing things. The US was one of the vary first industrialized nations ( as we know industry today ). If China started a trade war at this point they would hurt themselves as much as America. America would retool for industry again because it would have to and at that point it would not give that industry back up so easy again.
US will hurt. 100% of the ipods, ipads, google phones, amazon phones, clothes, electronics are created in China. US doesn't produce anything except military using taxpayer dollars. Both will hurt, but I think US will hurt faster because US economy is open and dynamic and will react faster.
There is no logic that says war will not disrupt economy. It will disrupt economy and Depression version 3 will happen. Maybe world wasn't that connected in 1940s but things are different now.
America really doesn't manufacture anything anymore except 3-4 jets and ships, 4 bad quality cars and 1-2 clothes. It is reality. US really has become like accountants.
If it had to manufacture it would. There is already talk of that.
Everything has been outsourced. Trust me. Detroit is bankrupt. Only viable industry in America is corn and cotton in Iowa and the South and 2-3 bad quality cars made in Detroit.
America doesn't need to produce 1 million new jobs a month to keep the heathons from the gates.America doesn't have to pay for enormous infrastructure projects that were essential when the economy was humming but are less essential now.China is out buying,at a premium, world stocks of natural resources very similar to what Japan did in the 1980's only to watch the prices further diluted by lagging economics and discovery of additonal sources.China has to worry about India, which will be the largest populated country by 2020 and who have a larger college based population than China.India also has the Atomic bomb and has slowly drifted from the Russia based block countries to the USA based countries.India is hungary and can underbid China for many of its current projects. To some up,don't count America out too soon and don't start packing with your red star arm patch waiting for the Chinese to invade!
The US can't get back into manufacturing until companies agree to hire Americans here. They will be reluctant to do that, since they are making huge profits by using cheap labor elsewhere. They don't have to pay benefits, overtime or deal with unions. They don't have to follow regulations on the environment or labor laws. These companies can be renegades and wouldn't agree to come back without a lot of assurances, such as low wages, fewer regulations, etc. It would take a long time, even with government help, to change to American made items again.
See how fast that changes If China where to start a trade war. They wont, but ol tom there seems to think that they might.
Tom111, your english is absolutely terrible! Learn english and then come back to these boards. take your CCP propaganda with you. We all know what you are and why you are here. 2-3 crappy cars? Fords are among the best quality in the world now as far as reliability. Your country lacks innovation. You steal everything, because you are a bunch of lowly thiefs who cannot innovate. You have Iphones, and everything else you speak of because of us. You are just the peasants who put our innovations together for us so we can buy it for cheap. You military is a paper tiger with dated tanks and one Russian refurbished aircraft carrier with no jets to land on it.
Beermonger, you are talking about the past. Past is past. Who invented what and who is using is the past. We are no longer going back to the past. Past is over. Everything is present now. We are going towards the future to better and future plans, we are no longer going back to Thomas Edison or European and American discovery. Also I'm not Chinese.
Again, you should learn english before typing on this board. I am not going into the past, I am talking about the future and the United States of America is not going ANYWHERE no matter what you, our peasant workers in asia, wish. Our military is superior to yours in every way, our economy is STILL 3 times as large, and there is no way in HELL we will let you have the whole China sea. It is not yours, never has been and NEVER will be. You are nothing but a CCP hack posing as an American, but a piss poor one at that with your horrible english. Again, we innovate, you build it on bad wages so we can buy lots of stuff. Who owns who?
We have yet to hear any gaffs from Romney! I'd like to know what his plans are for this war.
It is called "South China Sea" for a reason. Things change. 3 times larger, well China was 3 times richer than Europe hundreds of years ago and will be 3 times larger in 40 years. I think fast and type fast, so I don't really study my grammar that much. I think China will own the US with its 1.3 billion people. Things are not as they seem.
You are dumber than a box of rocks Tom. Okay South america is also America, does the USA, traditionally called "America" have claim over the entire south American continent as well? Absolutely not. China WILL respect maritime laws and treaties or will be met with force. China does not own a whole sea, the same way Mexico does not own the gulf of Mexico, you dolt. And things are exactly what they seem! population doesnt matter, you have 1.3 billion people in a place the size of the USA. As more and more Chinese come out of poverty, they will realize social injustice, want more resources, and cause collapse in your society like it always has over the past 2,000 years. You were the second largest economy in 1900 as well, but as usual, the chinese, chinesed that right up. 1.3 billion is unsupportable on land the size you have, if they arent peasants. And no one will give you more land. China will have a future of social unrest.
You should really think before you type! I can hardly understand what you say.
"America" generally refers to the Americas, but US is called America informally. "China" refers to PRC and there is no Chinas that refers to South Asia. China is a unique term that specifically refers to "China" the place/country. There is no "Chinas" like "Americas" in Asia. So to compare America with China is not correct. America refers to 2-3 things, but China just refers to one place. I think it is ridiculous for Vietnam to start drilling off the coast of China or Taiwan to claim the whole Taiwan Strait. China is the 2nd largest country by land are and it needs ocean in proportion to its size. If Vietnam was like Brazil it is ok to have large sea. So you think China should get 20% of the sea and Vietnam get another 25% of the sea and Taiwan gets 40% of the sea. It is relative. China needs the sea right in front of it across its coast and little more. Vietnam gets ocean right in front of it. Even by that measure China will get larger portion of the sea.
So hten the sea of Japan belongs to Japan using your logic and North Korea needs to get the fuch out.
Japan and South Korea and North Korea size are similar, so it is ok for them to divide 50-50. It is ridiculous for a small island called Taiwan or a small neighbor called Vietnam to want half of the sea 50-50.
Japan is about 147,000 square miles, south korea is 38,600 square miles and north korea is about 46,000. Your figures are way off. And china needs to stay in china and not try to move several hundred miles south into an area that belongs to the philipines and viet nam. China is just trying to act like the bully of the neighborhood and it will backfire soon.
The Chinese have no business being in Tibet. They got away with it because the West was war weary.
Similarly, the Chinese claim to these island has NO MERIT. However, Vietnam and the Philippines had better do the loud talking for a change. The Chinese garrisons should be blockaded and starved out.
BTW, if china is so great then why do its people protest the government so much under the threat of being run over by chinese tanks? Or are you not suppose to discuss that with outsiders under orders from your handlers?
Waaah-waaah, waaah. Baby needs a bottle. If it weren't for the U.S. during World War Two, the Japaneese would have surely made all Chineese extinct by now. You better us love for that one.
Protest happens in every country. But I think South China Sea won't be divided 50-50 with China/Vietnam or China/Taiwan. China will get at least 60% of the sea in proportion to its size. China will democratize and it needs time. Communism rose in China in response to Western imperialism. If there wasn't a western imperialism, China would be a democracy. So it really was West's fault that China is a communist country today. So once the western threat it diminished, China will become a democracy and this South China Sea issue isn't helping in that regard. Vietnam really shouldn't demand 50% of the ocean and China really shouldn't drill 5 miles from Vietnam coast, even by that standard China will get 70% of the ocean minimum.
Tom,
Stop spending all your time and money in the opium dens. It is really affecting your judgement.
Ok davefromdanapointca, I will keep that in mind. lol
Olivia, You got that one right. Claire Chennault is a hero of mine. If it wasn't for him and the AVG china would have been long gone to Japan during the run up to WWII. My father was a naval aviator in the Pacific during WWII and he saw, in his own words, "too much action" during the war. Good for you for knowing history. History that ol tom seems to forget. American dollars and blood made and saved china and what did we get in return for it? Attacked by them in korea and viet nam. Whenever I can I buy items not made in china.
Wow! Was that a request or a command?
Considering the fact that America is watching China so closely and feels a threat from what they are seeing would someone please tell me why we are still downsizing the American military? We will need everyone we already have and more if this becomes war.
OH MY!!! Error of our ways? Sounds like a command.
Dave 1.28,
A small point, Russia supported North Vietnam, not China.
Tom, it's absolutely understandable, and necessary, that we're all piling on you.
China is not the 2nd largest land area! I don't know if maps or Internet are allowed in your twilight zone, but Russia is the largest, Canada 2nd, and here's a surprise for you, USA 3rd, China 4th.
1 Russia, pop.140,702,000, area sq.km. 17,075,200
2 Canada. Pop. 33,213,000, area sq. km. 9,976,140
3 United States, pop. 303,825,000, area sq. km. 9,629,091
4 China, pop. 1,330,045,000, area sq. km. 9,596,960
5 Brazil, pop. 191,909,000, area sq. km. 8,511,965
So, with your wacky system, Russia should have one hell of a lot of sea, and so should Canada, and so on.
Tom, you've shown yourself to be Chinese, don't keep denying it. The way your mind works is typical of that nation's blind stubborn reasoning and it really get's under a normal person's skin. Don't expect to make any friends, but then you hate friends, right?
This conflict is Cuba all over again. The Chinese want what they want and don't care what Japan, S.Korea, etc. think. N.Korea and Iran are small potatoes. Sanctions against China won't work. It's stand with our allies time, militarily if necessary.
Tom,
I have been to the Philippines several times. The South China Sea touches the coast of the Philippines. So, you are saying because it is named the South China Sea the people of the Philippines have no claim to it? China is planted little red Chinese flags on the bottom of the ocean less then 35 miles off the coast of the Philippines. If you think, they are entitled to these waters you REALLY do need to put down the opium pipe! The U.S. will not stand for this. The Philippines is too strategically important. Anyone remember General MacArthur's pledge to return to the Philippines during World War II? When we did, it was the beginning of the end for Japan. The U.S. would love to have military bases in the Philippines again!
As for China's economy, there are entire newly built cities completed in China sitting empty because the government built them to artificially boost the econonmy. A few Chinese have become very wealthy but, most Chinese still are living like they are in a third world country. China is not stupid enough to start a trade war with the U.S. China has always talked tough but, will back down if push comes to shove. Yes, we would be intially hurt but, we would very quickly crank up our own manufacturing. Again, remember World War II? How fast was the U.S. Navy rebuilt after Pearl Harbor?
As for Chinese democracy, your statement that China would be a democracy now if not for western imperialism sounds like Chines propaganda! You should study Chinese history. I have! China has been ruled with an iron fist by emperors with large armies to back them up for thousands of years. Change will come to China but, I seriously doubt any of us will long enough to see it.
@ agewithoutwisdom
The Chinese had an estimate of 25,000 to 45,000 Chinese troops in Western North Viet Nam during the war. Many of the AAA sites were manned by Chinese troops.Their relations started to sour and china started to reduce those troops numbers but they still sent trucks, artillery and Chinese made migs to North Viet Nam. They played a large part to NVAs defence. The quote clearly indicates Ho sent troops to the south disguised as NVA troops.
So, yes, China did fight us essentially in Viet Nam
Hey Olivia - very very good point. Too bad your racism will get your comment collapsed.
I realize the patriotism that has some criticizing Tom. But, Tom does have a point, although he has not made it. The chicoms have been manipulating the exchange rate for years. Because of that, the rest of the world has been buying the junk that they sell. The problem the West has is that they may not have the guts to face them. Heck, the Bay Bridge is being built with chicom steel. Of course, this is absurd. But, other than ranting and raving, what have our politicians done about it? We still buy lead infested toys from them. We buy poisonous drywall from them. We buy............. from them. I'm sure that they are smug in their belief that we will continue to do so. But, the fact is that the chicoms need our money more than we need their products.
Tom is delusional about the chicoms moving towards democracy. But, that is nothing more than using language to deceive the listener. Kind of like when the dems try to liken Obama to Reagan. It's meant to appease and nothing more, after all, the dems hate Reagan with a passion and thought him a dunce. You know they don't think the same of Obama. Not unlike Obama speaking the language of business, all the while trying to destroy the private sector. And, the chicoms and Obama will succeed if we let them.
Sure Tom, your not Chinese! Not only are you Chinese, your Chinese government, because nobody else in China has access to the free internet. You talk about inferior American cars as the only thing produced in the U.S. I don't agree with that, but consider that the entire Chinese economy is based on manufacturing junk products. You'll never find somebody looking to buy high quality from a Chinese company. All the while China pollutes its land and air at a rate greater than anywhere else in the world. Even at that, it has to manipulate its currency to be competitive, and prevent any other countries from freely doing business in the country. The only intellectual property that China has is that which it steels from other countries. China supports the leaders of countries like Syria and Korea, because they have the same form of government and the Chinese government is afraid of what will happen to them should the Chinese people see that people can throw off the shackles of an oppressive government. So lol at that Tom.
Most of the comments I've bothered to read contain very little bits and pieces of truth, and very large pieces of garbage! China is looking desperately for sources of oil and gas. It knows large quantities are to be found in what has been called the South China Sea. That seas is called that because of its location, and is identified by the largest country that borders it, not because it "belongs" to that country, as the Mainland Chinese government would have anyone believe. Will we, the US, go to war for oil and gas? That question has already been answered - just look at Iraq, and the First Gulf War. Afghanistan is now all about Rare Earth Minerals, but nobody wants to talk about that. So, Yes, we will go to war for Oil and Gas.
The other part about manufacturing of iPads, iPhones, and other Apple products, we want to have so badly; We can manufacture those here in the US and still keep the price at the current levels, but only if Apple would be willing to reduce its humongous profits to a more justifiable level! Same would go for many other manufacturers. We still can do it, but are we willing? Or have we become just plain lazy?
Lastly, this has nothing, absolutely not a darned thing to do with liberals vs conservatives, as someone would have us believe...
Tom is one nationalistic Chinese. Let me tell you something Tom... The United States PEOPLE are sick to DEATH of the Chinese and our ultra-rich treasonous "capitalists" that have eviscerated our country and sent OUR jobs to China! You woefully misjudge the United States if you think for a second the PEOPLE of this country cant rally REAL quick and produce our own things again real fast. In fact, Its a dream of mine that all trade with China STOPS - so that we here in the USA can get back to being productive and having jobs that support each other. To have communities again, and locally owned shops. Its the past - and the present is destroying us from within, and the future is coming. The PEOPLE of this country will regain what we once had, and when we do, and when we reign in our government by drafting a new amendment that disallows corporate and lobby money in politics, we will rise again, like a Phoenix from the Ashes.
Your delusion that somehow the USA is dead in the water without China's ipods and refrigerators is just that - delusional. We have the boot of a small cabal of elite on our throats right now, but when the PEOPLE of this country are freed from that corporate fascism, we will quickly regain what has been lost. Our main streets, our manufacturing base.
Trade restrictions with China can't come soon enough for the average Joe in any blue-collar working town, and theres millions of us.
Theres a roiling resentment in this country - but unfortunately, it has not become strong enough to keep a huge mass of the ignorant part of our country from buying all this made in China (and other foreign lands) garbage out of their shopping carts. a little more poverty for them, and a little more arrogance from China may be just the medicine to tip the scales towards a bit of pride and a significant movement to buy American once again.
So dont be so sure that Americans arent ready and willing to roll up their sleeves and fight for what really matters. On the world stage, it has been a game between the elite. The public generally is disgusted by this. But a REAL war - one where we are all directly threatened, like WWII - you will see this country snap to attention and tool up REAL fast, just like we did in WWII while IN that Great Depression.
Its the arrogance of other nations that are going to trigger the sleeping giant within this country, and you will soon find out that when its something that is affecting every person in every community, and when we perceive it is not geopolitical games played by the rich and famous, this country will rise up with great indignance.
It cant happen soon enough. I could care less about what part of what sea who wants sovereign rights to, and I could care less about oil deposits, but I sure do care a WHOLE lot about how our manufacturing base has been dismantled and shipped overseas. If hot tensions is what it takes to stop and reverse this, and put the corporate slime in the sunlight for all to see their dealings with China at the expense of this nation, then I am all for it. Theres a HUGE ignorant mass in this country that even as they sink into poverty, continue to spend thier dwindling money in places like walmart, oblivious that they are in large part, responsible for their own impoverishment. But theres one thing that trumps saving a few pennies at walmart on carp they dont need for these people, and that is blind patriotism. They will avoid Walmart and all the other carp stores that sell Chinese carp if they think its for Flag, nation, and GOD.
I would like to make a few points here and ask a couple of questions to answer to some of those I feel are not very accurate.
Isn't there such a thing called sovereign waters? Something like 200 miles off a coast, split in half where there is less than 200 miles? I may be wrong about the 200 miles, but I know that figure is close.
As far as trade is concerned, China OR the US will not want to risk war against each other. They need us to buy the junk we developed. A little recognized thing is about to happen on that "front" though. As US wages are suppressed more and more and energy prices keep going up, it will be cheaper for the US companies to come back to the US to manufacture things here again which will put millions more Americans to/back to work. With the suppression of US wages, many can't even afford to buy the Chinese made junk any more. US companies have trillions sitting on the sidelines waiting for the bought and paid for government to relax environmental, labor and safety laws. That is why the right is so against unions. I don't think that would the best thing for us in the US, but hey, we will all have jobs, right?
The pipeline from Canada to Texas was never meant to bring energy to us, but to China. We have a president who is very thinly covering his a$$ by resisting it. He is allowing some to be built, but I think it is to pipe oil from the Dakotas to outdated refineries.
Outdated refineries brings up another issue. With the billions of subsidies the tax payers give them, shouldn't they be modernizing the refineries with that money? Or lose it if they don't modernize.
WE have not become lazy, WE would love to make those things here, just not at Chinese wages, safety or environmental standards. It is the manufacturing sector (owners and managers) who got lazy and greedy. I agree with most of what you said, but took issue of the lazy part.
China has nuclear weapons, and we know that the USA wont attack any country with nuclear weapons. China is building supper-carriers and is expanding its armed forces while obama down-sizes the US armed forces.
Hmmm. The area of Europe is about 3.7 million square miles, and the area of China is about 3.9 million square miles. Do you know something about China's plans for Russia (about 6.6 million square miles) that the rest of us don't know?
tom 111
Zhang asked Wang "Wu's gets South China Sea First"
Wang told Zhang "I - Dunno"
Zhang told Wang "No, Wang, I - Dunno's gets second"
Wang asked Zhang " Then Wu's in South China Sea?"
Zhang told Wang "That's what I say, Wu's got South China Sea" Ala Abbott & Costello of "Who's on First"
Let them figure it out because its way over my pay grade!
Yeah, and they're even called "Fine China." My mom used to have some of those supper-carriers, but mostly, we just called them "plates." :-D
Tom111;
You've officially told the world that you know nothing about manufacturing in the U.S.. NOTHING. I guess it's a free country and your babble is protected by the constitution but, it's seems wrong that people should be allowed to post lies and misinformation and try to pass them off as truth. From now on, perhaps you should include the disclaimer; "in my uneducated opinion".
Your babble makes me angry because I'm a 3rd generation engineer, contributing to a massive sector of manufacturing generating from, wait for it... THE USA.
And, the size of a country decides the size of their sea? Who says that?
I apologize for going negative, I'm just very burned out on all the crap that people spew knowing they have complete anonymity. Cowards!
Why is everyone giving Tom such a hard time? Since most of you are probably typing your response to his eastern slanted opinions on your PC/laptop built right there in his country, it seems pretty ironic to hear all this anti-Chinee talk. If you all believe so fully that he and his brethren are the enemy, then start demanding that your electronics, housewares, etc start being made in America. That means you can't shop at Walmart anymore. Bummer! On the plus side, we might start to see our economy recover. Of course, that will never happen...not as long as cheap labor with no laws governing screwing up the environment attract all our Trickling Down On Us billionaires to China.
Classic misdirection. Translation: "Since your computer was made in China, your opinions about China cannot be true." Love your (lack of) reasoning.
Lack of reasoning, Denver? Lets get down to the facts, why dont we? The fact is that China is growing by leaps and bounds, mainly because a lot or our 'patriotic' companies have shipped their factories to them. They are shipped their because the Chinese have ultra cheap labor, no unions, and almost no laws prohibiting these parasitic corporations from enslaving their workers or dumping poison into the environment. This translates into huge profits for the 1%'ers that run them. In the meantime Americans watch their economy slide off the cliff and the Chinese start to feel like they run the world which, to a certain extent, they do. So, they think they should be the Big Dog on the block instead of us. Seems pretty normal to me. So, when one of them gets on a blog like this and starts to act like an "American" a bunch of you take shots at him. My opinion (apparently based on no facts according to the brainiacs like you) is that the real problem is because of the same folks taking shots at Tom. If you want to still be the top dog in the world, which I guess you think you are, then you should act like one. Dont put up with the parasites that want to steal all our money and ship our jobs offshore. Demand American products...and when I say "American" I mean things built completely here in the US. Vote for politicians that are not in the financial pockets of these cancerous dogs. BTW...good luck finding one.
JW,
Most of what you say is true. You could have said that in the first place, instead of denigrating people you don't know for disagreeing with someone you apparently admire.
tom111 - Do you know that the largest seller of automobiles in China is General Motors?
Ever bothered to check the EEZ claimed by those countries above China?
I didn't think so.
This could prove to be a much more dangerous situation than Iran.
All the parties have overlapping claims that date back hundreds of years. For China to claim everyting up to the other parties borders scemes unreasonable, the present China is only 63 years old. China is not the only country with bases on the islands but they do have the largest navy after America's (but only 1 operational carrier). America has continuing responsibilities in relation to the Phillipines, and could easily be drawn into a conflict.
Phillipines is 1/10 of China so they get 1/10 of the sea. China is 9/10 of the size, so they get 9/10 of the sea. It is too bad that Vietnam, Phillipes and Taiwan are small countries.
Tommy! That's not the way it works! Based on your postulation then Cuba(island-360 of water) should be entitled to 3/ 5th of the Gulf of Mexico and Mexico would have 2 fifths! You should read more about geopolitics and fewer comics! Your ignoraance is unusallly common to most of you liberals who can't wait until America falters.Still hoping your commisar will give you a better job than you don't have now? It won,'t happen ok.You don't work, you don't pay taxes and you still get a tax rebate every year totaling $2000 to $3500.As long a Mommy alllows you to hold up in the basement, you are doing better than most taxpayers!
You got it all wrong, Mas. It's the Republicans who want the country to fail, not the liberals. You have been against everything that would have helped and for everything that won't. You want to get Obama out of office so bad you have stopped thinking about the country and what's best for the people. And most Americans are hard working and pay taxes - even though the jobs they have sometimes keep them from making both ends meet. You have absolutely no faith in America because you have no faith in the people, and the people are what make it go.
Alright a new place to stick our noses in other peoples business. I was becoming so board with the Middle East and Africa. It has been about 40 yrs since we have got to have a war in the Pacific. We have attacked so many nations in my lifetime (55 yrs.) that we are starting to make the ancient Romans seem like a peace loving bunch.
Dave: You are the worst type of commenter, stupid, uneducated and not very loyal to your country.Your left wing professor should have taught you better but you had your head so far up his butt you could not have heard him anyway!I want you to take you cap off, check the wiring and tin foil, take your meds and get some rest! When you awaken, pack you crap and move to a country you can love rather than staying in a country you hate!
I knew you were that type, Mas. The easiest comment to make is to call someone stupid and uneducated. The writer was talking about hating war - not his country. Try to stay on topic.
Unlike YOU mas098, you just send people out to get KILLED by the MILLIONS and would not care less as long as YOU can wave your American Flag and pretend to matter. While MILLIONS of American servicemen are getting KILLED you will be sitting your FAT,and LAZY butt on your bunko chair eating your bag of Doritos and doing NOTHING to help the cause that you SOOOOO much love. YOU are the robot drone, sending people out to die so that you can prove what exactly???? That America can still WIN something. GET REAL WITH YOURSELF!!!! America LOST Iraq...America LOST Afghanistan... we will LOSE Iran.... ALL which ended up with THOUSANDS of unneeded deaths. It is time to STOP this MADNESS before we will have NOTHING left.
Patcee! You could not count the number of times I have been called names! From neo-nazi,racsist,(when the topic isn't about race),hateful,Jew hating,Homophobe! I could go on forever. All one has to do is show some semblence of erudation and we are immeditely expelled to the pasture of hate! It would be nice if you knew what you were talking about before you comment but,of course, you are to liberal to understand my point of view and too ignorant to comment with something half way intellectual!Grow up and when your side does something expect the same in return!
You use a big word or two and call everybody ignorant because they didn't also do the same thing? The fact of the matter is far more concise than your tirade which amounts to nothing more than crying for sympathy while lashing out at 'liberals'. If you were so intellectual you would realise the logical fallacy of simply discrediting an individual, or a vague group of them, in an attempt to discredit their argument, which is all you did. I don't even care about the point you failed to make, just don't claim to be smart when you clearly know how to read a thesaurus and not much else. Also if you're going to be high and mighty at least proofread.
Observation,
You just did exactly what you railed against. Hypocrite much?
Guy with the purebred American Boxer wins by default. Eat those liberal Chinese pugs!
Why not just tell China to go to hell? Oh, that's right, thanks to our huge national debt, most of which we owe to China, THEY OWN OUR ASS! I guess, once again, the Obama, "I'm sorry" diplomacy is our only option.
They own a nice chunk of US debt, but they are not the largest creditors. They can not use that debit as a weapon because the fallout will destroy their economy as much as it would the US. They are a victim of their own expansion in that way.
US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan was paid for by China.
Actually, most, if not all of it was payed for by the people of the US. They, through the federal reserve hold the vast majority of the US gov debt.
They own our debt! A quick case of inflation and they go directly to near nothing.Remember Japan in the 1980's!
I'm so glad you get your financial savvy via popular US news headlines! How informed you all are! Actually folks, China only owns 9% (this includes Hong Kong) of our dept. Again, 9%. To make it simpler, that is less that 1/10th of the debt. As QE137 said, we owe most if it to ourselves. In fact, Japan is very close to China in how much we owe them. And guess what folks, many other countries owe other countries too! It's how this messed up system works, unless you practice state capitalism like China (which is messed up in it's own way too of course).
I wonder if it isn't more about investments than "owing" anyone. I know that is splitting hairs, but when interest is being paid, it is an investment. They can pull their investments out, but only a certain amount at certain times. A big problem is, many large organzations can't park the huge amounts of surpluses into the markets, as they are already over valued as a whole. Banks can't take it and pay they same interest out. Only liquid assets can be parked in banks. This goes with not only China, but social security, government bonds and treasuries and some retirement funds to name a few.
Sigh...
Time for everybody to take a chill pill.
We can seed it in the clouds. We have the technology...
As far as im concerned, CHina can go F@@k themselves, we should of nuked them a long time ago, after we saved thier asses in ww2 from the japanese, they shouldbe kissing our asses, bunch of ingrates,i refuse to buy anythign that says made in china, mainly because they make nothing but junk, and imean junk, they have tried to kill our pets, tired to kil your lil babies with thier screwdup poisoned baby formulas, an yet we let them continue to breathe,we need to show some back bone and do a premetive strike, i know i would,, id nuke em off the face of this planet, a nice nuetron bomb, leave thier buildings standing and wipe up the people and low dose radiation, gone in a week,
Read DF-41 missile with 10 nuclear MIRVd heads. It is not 1945 when US had the only nuke and used them on a country that had no nukes. It is real brave. I'm happy that you wouldn't be buying anything Chinese. The product that said "Made in USA" is made up of components that is "Made in China" when you open it up.
The US has many 1000s of Nuclear weapons. China dose not. China knows this and will in that way act accordingly. China themselves has said that going head to head with the US military would be like tossing an egg on a rock.
Zippy, you sound a little hysterical. Count to ten and breathe deeply.
Big talk from someone who's hiding behind a "Made In China" computer.
Actually, the Motherboard, Hard Drive, and CPU in my systems Are not made in China. In fact at the component level I think the voltage regulators on my main board are the only thing I saw that I could read made in china on..
In any event, The US can make or build the capacity to make these things as well and will if and when it is in its best interest to do so. ( The US GOV already can ).
Look on the bottom of your keyboard. Your mouse. The back of your monitor.
The computer is more than just a motherboard.
Oh, and check out where the CPU comes from. Yeah, your CPU comes from a communist country that doesn't mind bumping you off.
The keyboard and monitor have nothing to do with the computer. they are input output devices. Might surprise you to know that the computer works fine without them.
My keyboard is manufactured in china, mouse in the US. The Core wafer in my Pentium 4 CPU was made in Oregon, final assembly was Malaysia.
Monitor was made in the US as well. Wow, we are killing the whole the US dose not make anything myth.
Like I said. Those things that are not made in the US could be made in the US, we just don't do it. if it meant going without or having our own capacity, Americans always do what they need to do.
I love how posts claiming "I never buy anything from China" somehow magically appear on these boards.
A motherboard is nothing without the transistors, resistors and all those other lovely tiny things that are made by Foxconn and other smaller companies in CHINA.
I know this, because I frequently replace caps that fail with EXPENSIVE ($2, haha) Japanese caps.
And on that note, please do keep up with all the ignorance, everyone - all those big shiny lcd/led smart tv's with all the same Chinese-made components in them - I get to repair them on average 2-3 years after they're first purchased. As I mentioned - I replace them with Japanese-made components - and it's practically a guarantee that they won't be back for the same problem again. You don't wan't to pay the extra $.50/per capacitor - my bills are getting paid really easy.
I Did not see anyone saying that they would never buy anything made in china. Component level parts are made all over the world and yes, Asia as a whole makes a lot of those parts, not just China. In fact The USA makes a lot of the Silicon wafers that go into Integrated components. The electronics industry as a whole is one of the biggest examples of a supply chain that literally extends around the entire plant.
My monitor and mouse may have been made in the US, but the components almost certainly where not. CPUs might be finished in China, but the wafers for those chips where likely made in the USA.
One thing that I rail against is those that imply that the USA ( or any western country ) would not have electronics or any of the goodies we have now if it where not for China or the rest of the world. They discount the fact that the world was not always so global and that if the need arises, we are capable of making this components if need be.
I try to buy things made in North America, but being a systems integrator and low voltage Power supply designer I know I can't be that selective with my parts buying and Im ok with that. I just dont drink the cool aid that has me brain washed to think that we CAN'T manufacture. We most certainly can and at a fair value and price to boot.
There are many things that can't be made in the US because we aren't willing to foul our environment with lethal poisons in the water, heavy metals in the soil and poisonous gasses in our atmosphere. We care about our people but the Chinese government doesn't care about their people at all. Just as in their previous wars this one is being fought with human wave policies.
Someone is talking smack now that they have built up a navy to back them up. It's so nice to know that the Clinton's helped in that effort by allowing advance electronic components, software and T.S. material to be funneled to the Red Chinese via "Most Favored Nation" trading status so that Bill could get campaign contributions for his re-election. Thank you Bill for your hard work at committing treason for re-election. Thank you for allowing them to get the necessary material for their advance missile guidance system, not to mention sub and carrier technology. Hey, way to go a$$hole! They couldn't have done it without you, since the Red Chinese haven't invented anything in the last 733 years, which was Printing - Movable Type. So they do like they always do, they steal technology from everyone else! But when you got idiots who will give it to them for chump change (Bill) why do you need to steal it?
So now the Red Chinese have four "Medium Carriers" (1 Australian & 3-Russian) retired carriers. Which they have finished refurbishing one and will have the other three ready by 2015. The U.S. has 20 carriers of which 11 are Super Carriers (70,000) tons or more. We are still the big dog on the block but that could change in the near future, such as 20 years from now.
China hasn't lost a war since they became communist.
Amen brother! Clinton was the wost type of traitor, someone who did with the intent on harming the USA!
Maybe you haven't been keeping score, buddy. But did you notice the US can't win wars against 3rd World Countries? Your "we have 20 carriers, HURAH!" comment is crap.
These wars you are talking about losing aren't acyual wars. The U.S. hasn't been in a war since WWII.
U.S.A. back to back World War champions.
Tom111- Are you saying the Chinese were the victors in Korea?
Any future war against the U.S. will have the same consequences for the Chinese population. Hell, maybe the Chinese need to start a war for population control. Cluster bombs are more efficient than artillery was back in the 50's
When the rules of war go off the table, who is the one that is going to be screwed? Not those with 11 Super Carriers and a billion trillion tons of TnT.
Tom111...read your history you chink troll. Vietnam kicked China's ass in a month in 1979 after China invaded them for invading Cambodia. 20% of China's 100k plus regular soldiers were wipe out by Vietnamese militia and national guards in one month. They sent the chinks packing home while Vietnam's best and most experienced fighters were busy in Cambodia.
Look at all the historic maps..the Spratly and Paracel was under Vietnam's control. China signed a UN treaty acknowledging Vietnam's control of those islands. The ONLY reason they got it back was because they invaded the island when Vietnam was bogged down in it's own civil war called the Vietnam War. As for your stupidity in the earlier treads, you should read up on the the UN Laws of the Sea and the 200 mile Exclusive Economic Zone. China claimed the Scarborough Shoal..which is 500 from China while it's only 60 miles from the Philipines.
I can't for the US to go to war with China...I would sign up. And yes I am of chinese descent but ALL AMERICAN!
cons2p8ted - I didn't think anyone remembered that debacle that humiliated the Peoples Volunteer Army during that war. I was in the service at the time and most of the guys in my unit were rooting for the Vietnamese to kick their a$$. I remember when the Chinese initially took the provincial city of Lanson, Vietnam. They were really proud of themselves at first. The Vietnamese just let them come into their territory deeper, and deeper. Then they open up with 155mm and 177mm artillery and annihilated a whole Chinese division. And to add insult to injury, they cut off another division that was trying to retreat and wipe that one out too! Pure stroke of military genius. And why not, we taught them well. China's last great war was Korea. And we fought them to a standstill. Even though the Russians were providing air defense and flying jets for them.
ImoenofTelengard - I was merely stating what the U.S. current carrier strength was. I was not putting my case forward to win applause for or against armed conflict with the Red Chinese.
Really, how about Panama and Granada? I guess you haven't been watching the score "buddy!"
I don't know what the law is in this area. Each countries that are in this sea has oceans that are there’s. I guess there is neutral sea area there and that sounds like it is first come first serve. People should look into setting new laws to keep China out of grabbing to deep into the south china sea and at the rate they are capable of doing. I feel bad for the other countries there but if no one is able to set a law down then there really is not much that can be done. What do people mean by a military garrison that China is doing in this sea? If China is upping there military there then other countries should be doing the same. Do people believe China is going to start a war with the U.S. and other countries over resources? That sounds pretty dumb and I hope they are smarter then that. They have a population problem and lets hope they don’t act stupid and start a fight to fix it. I think people can call Chinas bluff but fighting will not be good because of how big a fight it will become.
In the past decade,China has bought more natural resouces than any other country on earth. They bought an entire mountain in Peru just for the copper under the topsoil.Where are the environuts complaining about their destruction of the earth. They only worry about whether a salmon has a right to all the water in a particular stream but can't see the potential danger of the destruction of the earth by China. They have purchased vast tracts of land in Africa, the middle east and South America,at premeium prices because their economic machine requires them to continue to create more jobs at a rate of 1 million per month or chance that the remaining, poor populance will overrun the existing government.China has let the fox out of the bag.Like the Soviets they beleive thay can supervise the distribution of 100 million procucts coming in and going out.It will not happen in the long run.Change means the lose to China of its central control which is essentially defeat for them.No change means internal strife which the may or may not be able to control. What do you think Chinese would do if another Tenamon Square presented itself.I beleive the masses, now including million of millionares and ten of thousands of mega millionaires would follow the dissolution of thier government!
Wow, no wonder we as a country can't get it together. Just look at most of the postings above. It's the libs' fault. It's the conservatives' fault. NO look in the mirror. It's your fault. You all couldn't sit down at a dinner table and decide what to order together. Sad indeed.
Remember, the progressive are the ones who wanted and ademently proposed eugenics in the 1920's and continued into the 1950's with and includeing the creation and beginning of Planned Parenthood.PP was established by M.Sanger to stem the flow into the world of unwanted classes of people and races(blacks and latins), who the eugenicists believed were responsible for all the ills in the world. They side almost entirely with Hilter and the Progressive movement in Europe. They believe unhealthy or "crippled"peoples should be both sterilized and euthanized to prevent their breeding. They also thought that blacks and the swarthy population lacked the mental capacity of whites and the same should come to them.I'm just gald they were suppressed then or I probably would never had been born!I propose that they now should be subjected to the programs they so promoted so heartedly in the past.Every progressive should be limited to one child every other decade!
tom-3054619 - Remember the incident when G.W. took office over the surveillance plane that was forced down onto Chinese territory. Remember how long they kept the crew and plane. How they demanded an apology before they would release the plane. China is always the first to start some crap, so don't be surprised if they take some form of provocative action if we get a new President. Yes, the U.S. should not pussy foot around if provoked. A clear message of absolute sea power needs to be executed if they provoke an incident. The world expects the U.S. to lead as the policeman of the world. It comes with the territory when you control that much military power. We didn't ask for it; it was given to us via past history in dealing with tyrants.
Guess what China's buddy Russia is up to (again) while the world is watching the Olympics:
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/world_now/2012/08/russia-reportedly-sending-warships-with-marines-to-syrian-waters.html
I'm sure you all remember how Russia loves to invade countries during the summer olympics! I believe it was Georgia they invaded on or about August 8, 2008 and then Putin informed their buddy China and the rest of the world in front of the cameras at the Olympic games.
OFC they are headed to Syria with troops. They can't lose Assad. If they get openly involved, the US will too and there goes the party.
Russia is Mexico with a bomb! They are still being drug kicking and screaming from the 1920's!
mas, Mexico is way more socially dysfunctional with millions of Mexicans rotting in violent poverty (even though Mexico has plenty of money). We ignore this fact and do nothing to rebuild the society even though THEY ARE RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO US!
It seems that CHINA is using that old AXIOM......."Might is RIGHT." Puny little Philippines can only make a "lot of noise" worldwide regarding the PANATAG SHOALS.....( SPRATLEY ISLANDS).
Against CHINA.......they can't DO MUCH. The RICH in the Philippines "could care less" and the POOR....well, they would consider it more important to have "Food on the table".......than WORRY about the PANATAG SHOALS.
The ONLY ones WORRIED about the PANATAG SHOALS are those CROOKED Politicians because, they "see" an ECONOMIC opportunity to "shore up" their own POCKETS with OFFSHORE WEALTH.
Watch and see if this doesn't happen.
If Chinese currency was valued by the quality of the products produced the currency would be worth less.
The same could be said about American products. I personally won't drive an American car. They are slow and always have some mechanical issue.
The Yuon is about 14% out of wack with all other international currencies!
Derik I'd bet a nut you have an ifone! It wouldn't matter if that was made in north korea, you would buy it! Of course, you live at home with mommy in her basement and your idea of a bad day is when she demands you at least try and get a job.Try public relations, its a wide open section of the business community right now.I'll give you a hand. Repeat after me."would you like fries with that burger, mam!"Learn that and get out there and work! Next thing you know you will be the drivein window man!
Yet again China has a temper tantrum, jumps up and down and calls for an immediate and profuse apology. I'm so sorry your an immature brat and bully.
THE, China is just a bunch of capatilist pigs (kinda like us)
This is suspicous and a stupid move by America to say anything contentous about this part of the world (south china sea). This area has been stable since the end of the vietnam war. Safe flow of vessels should be our only concern. The last thing we need is more geopolitical expansionist contentions. Everything is FINE in the south china sea. The American diplomats in China need to Knock it off - Apologize and just let it go.
Stabile! Read somemore.Al-Quida is strong in Indonesea! There are rebel groups and intersection battles going on in Myramanr(Burma).Tibet has problems! There have been numerous armed conflicts between India and Packistan. There are insurection forces in Laos, the Philipines.Tanzania has rebel forces constantly fighting with the government forces.India has insurections involving the northern most inhabitants. There have been insurections in Thialand, parts of China. The only countries not involved with internal strife is Japan.Who do you think is backing these problems? The Chi-coms!
mas, these contentions in this area have been going on since the dawn of man (only the names have changed). We just need to keep it simple and focus only on safe passage of vessels in the south china sea.
Good night! I have a book to read!
Don't worry, Romney will back away from China in a heartbeat. His Bain Corp does tremedous with its China Connection. Not to mention APPLE and the World. Romney and Trump talk tough, but when all is said and done, Romney will fold, Trump will continue to buy goods for his Casinos and Hotels....made in China
China hasn't won a war since they became communist.
after Korea War, china economy totally destoryed, then 1959-1961, 40,000,000 chinese were killed by starvation,,
1960s'-india-china war ,china lost 90,000Km^2 territory to india..
1989 Vietnan-china War ,Vn occupied all small inslands on south china sea, china got nothing.
The US needs to stop picking unwinnable wars over oil. China is bigger, meaner and it's their turf. Best leave well enough alone. It's a case of who is the worse of the two bad guys here? (no good guys) - a covetous United States or a covetous China.
Meaner? Not when the F-22's get done with them
Unwinnable? Meaner?!? Was that a joke or just a troll?
And what do we do when China decides that the Philippines are touched by the South China Sea so they belong to China too? After all, they're nothing but a bunch of islands in the ocean.
There are so many naiive posts here today... posts such as nuking China and all that Sh*t...
But I'm still gonna state my opinion --- I mean, for christ's sake, can we not just stay out of all the messes in the world?
Can't you see the Phillipines are just utilizing us against China? And seriously, China and the Philippines aren't even enemies. China gave tons of millions of dollars to the Phillipines so they can built up a water resort system...while us, the U.S., only provided 20% of that number.
So what good does it do us for gettin ourselves tangled in this SouthEast Asia mess? We've got problems of our owns... and people are still talking about getting into a war with China? Ha.
Yah, we're the strongest nation in the world, but it doesn't mean we'll receive zero harm if we get into a fight with China. And fight China doesn't mean, fight China (only). Its litereally starting WW3.
I mean, we've got a lot of allies, probably more allies than any country in the world --- European countries including the royal GB and all other small nations (who's strong but bankkrupped...); Japan, Korea, and the Philippines .... Australia, New zealand... and of course Israel, and many other countries that I can't even remember their names.
But...
You think the middle east wouldn't 'help out' China (by stabbing our backs)? you think that North Korea wouldn't go outta their minds? you think Russia is really that weak after USSR that it can't do anything? You think Taiwan would actually help us out, rather than helping China, its blood connected brother, and whose only like 3 inches away from Taiwan?
This war is impossible... everyone is going to be sooooo harmed by this war. And seriously people, nuclear weapons? nay... I don't think so. U.S. isn't the only country that has it. It's going to destroy the world if U.S. actually throw out the first one.
So, people, can't we just stay out of alllll these messes around the world? why do we really need to control the Southeast asian seas? We're not the super hero.
I know how this is gonna end. China will lecture Obama and he will back down as he did the last time and the time before that.
Obama is weak and each country is flexing their muscles cause they are not afraid.
This is quickly becoming the new hot spot in the world. I think the United States should stay out of this. It's an Asian affair, and we wouldn't like it if China got involved in Pan-American waterway disputes.
Exactly......
Here are a couple of notes: Over five hundred years ago, a young Spanish explorer crossed over the Isthmus of Panama, discovering a vast new ocean, named it the Pacific, claimed it and ALL lands touching the waters for the king of Spain. Pretty much claimed 2/3 of the world. China's South China sea claims sound very similar. Back in the early nineties, when Saddam Hussein had designs on Kuwait, he put out feelers in the US government to determine our possible reaction if he were to pursue this acquision. When the US State Department indicated a "neutral" attitude, Iraq invaded Kuwait. China's South China sea claims sound very similar. Hey folks, I know it may sound cliche but History does repeat itself.
some 300 years ago, a couple of Europeans invaded a new found land called America and claimed it for their own use......
Who invaded America in 1700?
Ralph, yes there are many crocked politicians in the Philippines but, that is slowly changing. The only ones who care about The Panatag Shoals (Spratley Isalnds), are not just the crooked politicians. Trust me, the U.S. cares a lot! We would love to have military bases in the Philippines again because of its strategic importance in the area. Watch how fast that happens if and when they ask! Spy planes today. Navy ships tomorrow.
Oh, many of the rich in the Philippines don't care about the poor just like rich people everywhere but, family is number one in the Philippines. Millions of Filipinos work abroad including in China to support their familes back home. We could learn something from their family values.
what a bunch of maronious morones
on this planet no one and i mean NO ONE owns anything
so share and share alike yeeesh
im not to sure how someone thinks they own things when the only thing i see staying on the planet is the planet
lol fooooooools
greed now hell later
dont believe in god lol good luck in the end
We, unlike you, want to make sure our children and our children's children have a nice future for ourselves. We, being intelligent, prefer NOT to leave it in the hands of God - like they do in the Middle East. I suggest go find yourself a hut over there or go live in a tree in Washington/Oregon where you'll have a group that'll better accept your views.
Hippies never have and never will think of the long term. Just what suits them at the time.
