'There will be no winner in Syria,' UN chief warns, as refugee crisis grows

Most of the people living in the towns near Syria's largest city have fled, and those without money to leave were killed, rebels say. The Syrian troops have created a no-man's land, reportedly so that rebels can't re-supply the fighters inside. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned Friday "there will be no winner in Syria," as the world body said nearly 150,000 refugees fleeing the 17-month-old conflict had registered in neighboring countries.

In Aleppo, rebels fighting in the Salaheddine district, a southern gateway to the commercial hub, said they had been forced to fall back from frontline positions on Thursday by a fierce bombardment which had reduced buildings to rubble.

"There have been some withdrawals of Free Syrian Army fighters from Salaheddine," rebel commander Abu Ali told Reuters. Others said the main frontlines in the area, which had been held by rebels for more than a week, were now deserted.

The center of the district, near Salaheddine mosque, was abandoned when Reuters journalists visited on Thursday. The only sound was the constant echo of artillery shelling. There were no rebels, no security forces, and only a few residents darting in and out to pick up belongings -- while evading army snipers.

After months of protests and violent crackdowns, a look back at the violence that has overtaken the country.

All-consumed fighting
President Bashar Assad, engaged in an all-consuming fight with his mostly Sunni opponents, appointed a Sunni as his new prime minister on Thursday after his predecessor fled Monday in the highest-level defection so far in an uprising that has killed around 20,000 people.

Wael Nader al-Halqi, from the southern province of Daraa where the revolt began, replaces Riyad Hijab, who had spent only two months in the job before making a dramatic escape across the border to Jordan.

Assad's authority was shaken by the assassination last month of four of his top security officials and by rebel gains in Damascus, Aleppo and swathes of rural Syria.

But he has persevered with a crackdown on opponents seeking to end half a century of Baathist rule and topple a system dominated by members of the president's minority Alawite sect.

Rebels say minority Shiite and Alawite Muslims, the groups that have ruled Syria for decades, are being left alone in the carnage inflicted by Syrian troops. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

As the battle for Aleppo raged, Iran, Assad's closest foreign backer, called for "serious and inclusive" negotiations between the Syrian government and opposition.

Assad has repeatedly said he is ready for dialogue, but he has vowed to crush the armed rebels he says are terrorists. His opponents say he must step aside before any talks, arguing negotiations would be meaningless while the bloodshed persists.

Iran made the call after gathering diplomats from like-minded states in Tehran for talks on the conflict not attended by Western and most Middle Eastern states, which have demanded Assad end his family's 40-year rule.

'Long-term civil war'
The violence has already shown elements of a proxy war between Sunni and Shiite Islam.

"There will be no winner in Syria," Ban said in a statement read by a U.N. representative to the conference in Tehran.

"Now, we face the grim possibility of long-term civil war destroying Syria's rich tapestry of interwoven communities," it said.

Refugees pour across borders
In Geneva, Adrian Edwards, spokesman of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, told a news briefing that the number of registered Syrian refugees in four neighboring countries continued to grow.

'Situation is desperate' at makeshift hospitals on Syrian-Turkish border

The total includes 50,227 recorded in Turkey, where more than 6,000 Syrians arrived this week alone, the United Nations said.

"There certainly in the past week has been a sharp increase in the numbers arriving in Turkey, and there many of the people are coming from Aleppo and surrounding villages," Edwards said.

NBC News

People resisting the army of President Bashar al-Assad in northern Syria cope with loss and prepare for fighting.

"Now if you look at other areas, I think that the situation is more of a steady and continued increase, but where fighting happens we tend to see the consequences," he said.

As of Thursday night, there were 45,869 Syrian refugees registered in Jordan, 36,841 in Lebanon and 13,587 in Iraq -- which has also seen the return of 23,228 Iraqis from Syria since July 18, according to the agency.

"In several countries we know there to be substantial refugee numbers who have not yet registered," Edwards said.

Some Syrian refugees have also turned up in other countries including Algeria, Egypt and Morocco, and Evros, the Greek region that borders Turkey, he said, adding that the numbers were "really tiny" compared to the flows to Syria's neighbors.

I wonder how long it will be before the US is fully drawn into Syria.... I bet Cheney already has thought of ways to make money on it too.

Do you have a dart board with Cheneys face on it?

You seem to be a genius, so why not try to put Cheney out of business and provide some better services for our troops. You know, like Haliburton tries to do.

Just don't think about making a profit off your efforts.

Some of them like Bushes, Cheney, Hillarys, McCains, Romney's, UN, human rights groups, ICRC and some more see and sometimes jump where the monies of Saudis, oil companies and their lobbyists and Jewish lobby direct.

"In Geneva, Adrian Edwards, spokesman of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, told a news briefing that the number of registered Syrian refugees in four neighboring countries continued to grow."

If atrocities and barbarism on girls, children and women are the criteria, then the most despotic, autocratic and bigoted Sunni Saudi ruler with his 5000 princes and princesses, Kuwaiti, UAE and other Arab League Sunni rulers and their rich sheiks are the biggest culprits in the history.

Through the Muslim immoral trafficking gangs, these barbarians have assembled all varieties of poor and helpless girls and women from all over the world in their harems and brothels.

In killing of opponents again, these people have established world records in religious battles.

If the US, Britain and others support such Sunni barbarians and beasts who treat girls and women as cheap sex slaves and killers, then one can only conclude that Saudis, oil companies and their lobbyists determine what to see, how to lecture and where and when to act.

Rest like “human rights”, “killing of children and women”, “militants”, “terrorists”, “WMDs”, “chemical weapons” and so on are a pure hoax.

Similar hoaxes were played each time before Iraqi wars on directions of Saudi, oil companies and their lobbyists.

Now none of them are looking into Iraq, where at least a million have been killed and devastated.

What about the great Sunni Saudi and Arab human rights observer to Syria, Sudanese Gen responsible for the genocides of 300000 Christians in Darfur?

Are these people dead when it comes to Christians in Nigeria, Sudan, Sufis in Mali, Shiites in Pakistan and other places?

Why do these people wake up and start their songs and dances only when Saudis start dancing?

Anything intelligent to say?

you forgot Nobama.... you remember libya?

why do we not hear about the atrocities that happend in Libya other than the 1 release, and a "hush-hush" to follow? you know, the reports prior to our "humanitarian aid" of deserterd once loyal to Daffy, that held office of government being executed in the dessert, bodys found hands bound, and killed execution style.. AP wrote about, and MSNBC who's writers lack the ability to read what they copy and paste and put their name on. How as the war in Libya drew to an end, all those found in a courtyard, men, women, child alike... bound hands behind the back, killed execution style... Daffy didnt do it, and his troops were too dead, captive, or on the run... leaves? if this crap that happend being swept under the AQmerican rug leaves some of you baffled, you should be in line to vote for the next president of America.

since i can remember, the Syrian public has hated our guts, so dont question the toothless bite, as my concern. personally our counry needs to stay out of it, unlike Libya apm. yes we have boots in Libya protecting investments, in part for BP, (the guys NObama let cheese us in the Gulf), and any other oil company who is our buddy, lol...

but then those who voted NObama that still wear kool aid glasses dont care as long as they get theirs. but i dont worry too much about that. See, the trash of this country have become SO ENTITLED it will be kind of like the crash of 08. the government says there isnt enough $$ to go around, being a good sized of our national debt goes to a hand out, not a hand up. This goes to all of who have a job, where the taxpayer gives you a job, to manufacture thur one form or another even thru a different company, a job. Oshkosh Truck in WI is 1 exsample, down to the trains to nowhere, and the road you have to walk to the UE line.

there isnt a lot of federal $ for these jobs, actually there is NONE. we keep the ones we have now thru contract negotiations, or as an asset to an area we need to be strong in. Then comes the people who get their daily hand out thru various forms of welfare. people who are able to work, get welfare by having kid after kid to keep the breeding going. you realise that this gives no incentive to work. you cant afford a kid, take it away. sure WE the taxpayer will soon be forced into destitude, but its running out. if you come to the government for a finacial hand up is one thing, but a hand out is another. Take these illigetimate brats who breed more of the the same away for their mothers, and give to working families, and kick the wench to the curb, along with their unemployed twin (father). you want food? work for it. we feed these mothers, and provide roofs over their heads EVERY time they have a kid till it turns 18! WE PAY for their insurance! for the lights, the heat, clothes, and almost EVERY other luxury other than a car, that ANY ONE of us, has to bust our b$lls day in, and day out just to maintain.

our nation has become a land of the working, caring for the land of the lazy w4ores for a vote.

    THANK

    YOU

    DEMOCRATS!

What are you going to do when Pelosi, NObama and the like, can no longer bleed the working dry, and YOUR cash cow has no means to care for you?

that day is just around the corner... and it doesnt matter WHO the next president is.

What are you going to do when Pelosi, NObama and the like, can no longer bleed the working dry, and YOUR cash cow has no means to care for you?

i just cant help to answer this one, because it's a "no brainer", and i hope this serves something to think about for every working person out there... even if you work at Burger King, or any other min wage job.

when the occupy UK movement took place, what happend? they looted merchants, and took or destroyed items people worked their a$$es off for, with no regaurd. when one older teen was asked why they were doing these acts, he response was (along the line if not quoted) "why cant we have the things other people have?" NO clue, he had to work for them. go to work every day, at a job, to make money, to pay his bills, and if there is enough $ left, GO BUY ONE!

it wasnt just 1 kid, it was hundreds. then toss in the adults who were with them. they called in a sizeable force because they had to... and SF ,Oakland... you have yet to top. But i am not worried, because unlike the UK some of us still have a right to defend ourselves with even odds. leaving a question of, "tell me entitled, do you feel lucky? do i protect myself with the last true amendmant, or do i think i can beat you to the phone to call the cops before you can stop me (usually with a gun)?" to ponder upon. That too however will come to a point where it will not matter.

like the UK there are no jobs for HS or even a college grad being created fast enough. some people i dont think could grow as much as a blade of grass to eat, coming out of either, and those are ones who graduated. So, put 2+2 together, (X-no job creation close to pace)divde by C-those who actually have a job+the number of people they pay the way for who dont. there are more people than there is money on a global scale. thats why they keep wanting to print more. letting China have Afghanistan for mineing was our countries biggest mistake. (in case some missed it, what we have been witnessing for the past 15 yrs is a global shakedown by NATO, on our dime to gain finacial reserves because WE OWE them).

the US and UK got Libya, i forgot who got Iraq,(oil), China has already started its equipment to mine Afghanistan. we, along with NATO (like one other military commander if not mistaken) are going in thru the horn of Africa, maybe one of the richest ever with minerals from diamonds to gold. there is no way these people (NATO) any faster than they have, before the conflict is even over, they were moving in.

yet still... the list of those who feel entitled continues to grow faster than the economy, meaning faster than can get these raw products oil, gold, silver, diamonds, and so goes the list right down to the last rock of ore. and ore being the most common mineral since the steel age formed, isnt worth a lot but its taken a steep climb in cost. there maybe stone houses you can build, because steel will cost too much, and wood? lol. this was another think tank crusade, like global warming, and others, that took place back in the 80's... what will people live in when there is no petrol left, no trees we can afford to cut down, no minerals, and not enough land to feed even our own people? try a search on "casket liners", and follow your answer from there?

When running for election in 2008 Obama promised no more war without Congressional approval...well up pops Libya and Obama puts US military into action without Congressional approval...Obama stated he did not need Congressional approval...he invoked Executive priviledge....ditto for the Sudan and ditto for the assasination of Anwar Al-Awlaki...

Obama is more of a warmonger than Bush ever was....

The US should only send a Navy Hospital ship to turkey to help with the wounded and air lift them to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center to be treated for wounds.

The US should only do postive moves here let the Arab League turkey decide what to do as far sending military and who to arm.

US need not send military AID the Syrian people need to sort this out themself.

The American Civil War close to 620,000 people lost their lives

The US also should not send Military AID period. I will not vote for Obama if he sends in the Military.

In a battle for power and political control (as in Syria), there is ALWAYS a winner. And too often in the regions where Islam is predominate, a group who waits in the shadows for both sides to bleed out, "wins" ... without firing a shot or losing a fighter.

You are partially correct. In Iraq, the U.N. passed 17 resolutions before the United States and the "coalition of the willing" took action unilaterally. In Afghanistan The U.N. General Assembly and Security Council agreed that the United Staes and Britain were entitled to take action under United Nations Charter, Chapter 7, Article 51.

The purpose of the Syrian conflict...to kill off non-conformists so only sheep-le remain.

The question we should ask: Why do the "powers that be" want a world full of sheep-le. I hope I'm already dead when they achieve their goal; the world will experience horrors never before seen in history.

Who's fault is it that the "tapestry" is destroyed. Does anybody remembe Yugoslavia under Tito. It became a communist country after WWII but General Tito refused to let the country become a puppet under Stalin and the Soviet Union, and although the country was part of the communist bloc and behind the iron curtain, no soviet troops were allowed on his soil. The Soviets thought the price of bringing Yugoslavia under their control was too big a price, especially after WWII and everything else going on. Tito was praised in the west as being strong and independent. Well. look what happened when he died and the Soviet Union collapsed. Genocide only second to the Nazis. I guess this multicultural country was a hoax, kept together by a rigid, ruthless system and ruler. Now we are being told the wonderfully interwoven country known as Syria is being torn apart. Why is that? Because is has been ruled with an iron fist and terror by a family as if it were a piece of property owned by them. Peace. Yes. Freedom. No. Security. Yes. Justice. No. As long as everyone knew their place, stayed there, didn't ask questions, this finely woven country worked great. Kind of like the old Confederate South in the US. The plantation owner could do as he pleased, his wife was as much a prisoner because as long as she didn't see her husband raping the black women and having kids, or ask any questions, it was just one happy family, As long as everyone knows their place, no problems. Well, the problem in Syria is Assad and the ruling class who are destroying it. Assad could have began a transition to democracy and freedom. He choose to eliminate anyone and everyone who dared question him in any way. This tapestry, as it is being called by the UN official, is a facade. It is another example of rule by terror. The Soviet Empire was a well oiled machine. Spoke as one. Acted as one. One seventh of the population sent to Siberia. Wonderful.

As long as the terrorists have safe havens in hostile foreign countries, the legitimate government's forces can't end the rebellion. Any time the government starts to get the upper hand, the terrorists retreat to their safe havens to recuperate, rearm, and plot new attacks.

It is the same problem faced by the Israeli regime in Palestine. Their conflict can never end as long as the freedom fighters facing the Israeli oppressors can retreat to safe havens, lick their wounds, and plot future attacks.

Take the troops out and let these people fight their own wars and cut off the support of money that mostly goes into the pockets of the leaders of the country.

Any of these people would be crying for the Swat Team if someone started firing bullets thru their window or screaming like a baby after being dragged to some secret dungeon and tortured. Syria has been ruled by a FAMILY! Passed from dad to son. The dad murdered some 30,000 back in his day when there were protests against his rule. Nobody said a thing. Nobody did a thing. This time the people didn't wait too long. They saw the writing on the wall and started to fight back. They are outgunned but they won't quit because it's either fight as long as you can and win or fight as long as you can and lose BECASUE if they don't fight or fight and lose, they are all going to be executed, tortured, or imprisoned for the rest of their lives. Assad is a psychopath. There is no negitiation or forgiveness with a psycho.

Well its not really that simple. Even if the rebels win Syria will be turned into a proxy battle ground . A unstabilized area to be used as a pro or con to an end. Recouping the whirlwinds as they say.

                    Assad is a selfess jerk

To let his country go to hell, to refuse to share power, to refuse a sincere dialog

He is a great actor, he had the USA fooled to think he was a reformer, a moderate

At least with Hussein in Iraq we knew who he was and he knew it too.

Assad is worse, he cares more about his minority "alewits" , whatever, then Syria

The Arab spring lives on. Let the Persian spring come in 2013 to Iran

'There will be no winner in Syria,' UN chief warns, as refugee crisis grows.

Nonsense! The non-muslim world is the winner as long as they are slaughtering each other.

The statement is correct - there will be no winner. In particular, as this is now clearly firstly a proxy war, with strong sectarian elements it is certain no Syrian is going to win anything. The proxies are in for their own reasons and they are not humanitarian. They perhaps think they can win something - but I suspect not. Case in point, Saudi a big financial and arms supporter of the rebels - but do the Syrians want the kind of fundamentalist dictatorship the Saudi's represent? As for the US support of the rebels - I suspect that anything that follows will not remotely look like anything that could be useful and stabilizing in the area ( look to Afghanistan/Iraq for our glorious/brilliant track record ). Russia? What ever comes out will be a broken country - so what value. The only certainty is that if the Syrians continue in this now externally driven self immolation they will inherit nothing of value.

Given that this is a war with Iran, Assad, and Hezbollah on one side and the Muslim Brotherhood and al Qaeda on the other, GOOD!

If this conflict is draining MB's coffers, even better!

It's not that I don't sympathize with innocent Syrians who truly want a better, more humane government. Hell, one of those Syrians is my lawyer, who I see on Facebook sometimes advocating for U. S. military involvement. It's just that I don't want my country to get involved in a conflict where we will undoubtedly be viewed as interlopers, Snidely Whiplash-like in our motivations and machinations in that simplistic, Manichean way that a lot of Leftists view the world.

I'd much rather spend money pursuing an all-of-the-above energy policy: oil, natural gas, nuclear, solar, fusion, etc. to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. (Incidentally, isn't it funny how those who say that we go to war for oil never stop to consider allowing oil companies to drill for oil on our own soil?)

IT's funny how most people here are so naive. I would like to ask most of you what the hell do any of you people know about US history for you to know anything about Syria or anywhere else in the world. I also would like to know how many of you people ever been to Syria for you to Judge how the Syrian people are living. Most of you people believe what your propaganda mainstream media tells you and everything they tell you are all lies. I am from Syria and I am a Christian and most of the people that are dying in Syria are being killed by the Terrorist that you people support. How all of you people forget 911 what a shame so many people die for no reason by the same terrorist at are now in Syria. These terrorist that are in Syria are destroying Churches and Mosques killing lots of Christians and Alawites and Sunni's as well. These terrorist are coming mostly from Saudi Arabia Qatar and other hard core Islamic States that have NO respect for anyone but Hardcore Islam. When are you going to wake up people WHEN!

The rebalancing of power in the middle east is just starting to be visible. The walls of forced order have eroded. The historical tensions of the middle east is about to expose itself modernly. Troubling times indeed.

Of course there will be no winners, that's not the point of what's currently happening in Syria. These uprisings are being supported and controlled by Western influences with the intent on toppling an unpopular regime. They aren't "Freedom" fighters, they are terrorists who happen to have the support of the United States. That's the only reason they were given the name "Freedom Fighter." It gives a nice tone to what can otherwise be considered terrorism on a major scale. This is another step in the ultimate goal of leaving the Middle East in total chaos. Keep drinking the Kool Aid people

well,, yes indeed, Assad shows very clear and definite signs of high level/function psychopathy,..you cant "negotiate" with these types, and if they have a goal??.. it is not something we would recognise at all,..The Un is correct, again!, there will be no "winners"...only another country that has to start from the beginning, with our help,, ..so be it,..as for the UN "not helping",, this is so untrue,.. "helping" is not only setting up and or using a shoot out,, food, medicines, refugee aid, transport, helping neighboring countries! deal with the refugee,s and more,..please do not! say they are not helping,..it is incorrect,..The Un may have some problems, but they get on it and deal with them[unlike many others]..and that deserves our respect,..btw,,,look at the picture heading this article..what do you! see?.. gangs of men! with guns,..again!...and notice please?.. every one has his finger on!! the trigger?..no or very little training or this would not! be so,..some guy with an rpg, in a crowd of friends,, with his finger on the trigger,.. DANGER!!...no??...The UN is thinking "after"[and rightly so].. and dealing with all those weapons so they cant continue! to kill and maim,is a large part of the "after"...that! is smart,..Egypt,Libya,Syria, next will be Iran perhaps?..dictators are falling like dominoes these days,..so be it,..it is the "after" that we, all of us!! need to start thinking about,..answer the 5 W,s,..perhaps??..no "winner"..perhaps... but changes,..you bet!!.."freedom" is not really "free"..is it??..as we can see,..

sorry bud, don't buy your bogus story that its al-queera vs. Assad, truth is that Assad attempted to crush the arab spring movement which started this conflict and its actually is syria people vs. Assad. they rather elect their leader of their choosing instead of their leader electing himself.

from NBC embedded reporter - Myth: FSA are al-Qaida or at least infiltrated by al-Qaida. There's no evidence of a large al-Qaida presence. This is not an al-Qaida fight. In the last day, we have met three rebel commanders. One was an air-conditioner repairman before the war. and a tomato and zucchini farmer. The third grew grain and lentils. One of the commanders considers himself an Islamist. The other two are more secular.
In total, the three commanders control about 1,500 men. Not one of the commanders supports al-Qaida, nor have any of the dozens rebels have we have met. Some reports that al-Qaida fighters had recently taken over the Baab al-Howa border crossing. There was a video that showed rebels carrying an all black flag, similar to ones favored by al-Qaida. We spoke with the rebel leader who carried the flag. He said he has nothing to do with al-Qaida and the flag was an Islamic one.
