Not so much a conspiracy. Most Israeli papers are saying that Obama will be re-elected and today are adding that Ryan's selecvtion pretty much guarantees it. The Israelis are very tied in to events in Florida and are saying that Romney has given Florida to Obama and now would have to carry EVERY contested state to make it to 270 electoral votes.

They also talk about that even if Romney were elected, a new President will seldom take military action within his first 12 months in office. If one were to assume that what is said in the papers reflects what Israeli citizens as a whole thing, one would assume that they all hate Americans. The real story, told briefly, is: In 1948, the UN partitioned the Palestine territory into two states, one to be Jewish, the other to be Palestinian. Every single country bordering on these new nations, plus Iraq, invaded Jewish territory almost immediately, with the intent of expanding the Palestinian state to include all of the both new nations. The Israelis, who founded their country in the midst of all this, defended themselves and maintained the territory granted to them by the UN.

After a number of small-scale disturbances in the region over the next 15-17 years, the same group of Arab nations organized to invade Israel again in 1967. Poor communications and badly executed preparations allowed the Israelis to discover the plan ahead of time, allowing the Israelis to engage in the universally-recognized best defensive tactic - a pre-emptive attack. The price Israel extracted from the Arabs for staring the war was additional territory - pretty much what the victor has extracted throughout history. In this case, it was the West Bank, Golan Heights, Gaza, and Sinai.

Sinai was returned to Egypt less than 10 years later. Gaza and the West Bank have been given to the Palestinians. Golan will be retained - it's largely uninhabited and is strategically crucial to Israeli defense.

2) making threats

If you have a gun, and the neighbor who does not like you also gets a gun, you should start worrying about him, but you can not consider him an aggressor. If he buys that gun illegally, you should alert the police, and if the police does nothing, you should keep your gun ready, in case he decides to use his on you. If he points that gun at you and yells "I am going to kill you", you have every right to shoot him. The Israelis started the 1967 war to gain land and water. The idea that they were about to be attacked by all the Arab nations is a total fabrication.

First, afterthoughts are irrelevant, what was on the table at the time is that Egypt had army ready and was openly saying that they are bout to destroy Israel, weather they meant it as bluff doesn't matter, what matters is that they gave Israel a reason to believe that the invasion is coming, thus Israel had every right to stop it.

All it proves is that some of Israeli leaders were having second thoughts later, nothing more.

Just because decades later some of them THINK that Nasser didn't really want a war, does not prove that he in fact did not want a war.

If the concentration of army does not prove that there is going to be an attack, it certainly proves that an attack is very likely, and not being ready for an attack is very dangerous.

Israelis were not obligated to assume that this just a bluff and there is no attack, especially not obligated to bet their citizens' lives on it.

Like I said, when someone points a gun at you and says "I am going to kill" you have the right to behave as if he is in fact going to kill you, because if you don't, being wrong means getting killed.

If Egypt didn't have enough forces, would that not mean an attack was not likely, as opposed to your statement that it was very likely? What country attacks another when their is no chance of victory, which having too few troops would ensure? Israel could have remained prepared, without actually attacking Egypt, but they wanted the land that comes from winning an easy victory, which was helped by Israel's sneak attack on Egypt.

Actually, there were more troops on the way. Israelis did not have to wait for those to arrive.

Second, if Israel wanted land so much, they would've just kept the Sinai, which they did not. What they wanted was for Egypt to leave them alone, and the show of strength had achieved that.

Eli100... Iran having nuclear capability by itself does nothing to affect the cost of oil or US safety because they do not have the launch vehicles to reach us. Israel would be less safe but lets face it the Iranian people as a whole do not hate the US or even Israel it is the Ayatollahs who control the theocratic republic of Iran. I personally believe that the people (especially those who work in the nuclear facilities) would revolt before allowing a nuclear weapon to be used in anger.
