Assange in balcony appeal to Obama: Release leak suspect Bradley Manning

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange addresses the media and supporters while British policemen stand outside the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, Sunday.

Updated at 10:14 a.m. ET: LONDON -- From a second-floor window of his refuge at the Ecuadorean embassy, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on Sunday called on President Obama to release Bradley Manning, the United States intelligence analyst accused of leaking masses of confidential information.

In his  first public appearance in two months, the former hacker thanked his supporters gathered outside the London embassy and appealed to the U.S. not to prosecute WikiLeaks staff and supporters.

From the Ecuadorian embassy in London, Julian Assange asked the U.S. to "renounce its witch hunt against WikiLeaks." NBC's Duncan Golestani reports.

"I call on President Obama to do the right thing - renounce the witch-hunt against Wikileaks," he said in a provocative address in which he appeared to invoke the support of dozens of Latin American countries.

The U.S. administration’s “war on whistleblowers must end,” he said.

Ecuador on Thursday granted political asylum to the former computer hacker who incensed the United States and its allies by using his WikiLeaks website to leak hundreds of thousands of secret U.S. diplomatic and military cables in 2010.

Assange paid tribute to Manning, who is the suspected source of those leaks and faces 22 criminal charges which, if he is convicted, could land him in jail for life.

"If Bradley Manning did as he is accused, he is a hero and one of the world's foremost political prisoners," Assange said.

Investigators have determined that Manning allegedly unlawfully downloaded tens of thousands of documents onto his own computer and passed them to an unauthorized person, but have not been able to make a link between those files and Assange.

Calling for US President Obama to "do the right thing," Wikileaks founder Julian Assange makes his first public statement since entering the Ecuadorean embassy in London in June to seek asylum. Watch his entire statement.

Assange spoke from a balcony at the embassy because Britain has made it clear it will arrest him the moment he steps out of the property.

The west London embassy is in a building shared with other tenants and has no vehicular access except via the street, meaning Assange could not even appear in the entrance hall without risking immediate arrest.

UK refuses WikiLeaks' Assange safe passage to Ecuador

With a police helicopter hovering overhead and protestors using megaphones, the international legal row over Assange's future has become a spectacle in what is an upscale area of London, just a few meters away from department store, Harrods.

The former hacker is wanted in Sweden for questioning regarding allegations of rape and sexual assault and Britain has said he will not be granted safe passage out of his Ecuadorean embassy refuge, which enjoys diplomatic status.

Baltasar Garzon, a Spanish jurist and prominent human rights investigator who heads Assange's legal team, was also expected to speak in a separate address outside the building ahead of Assange's appearance.

The United Kingdom is fighting the controversial decision and will not grant Julian Assange safe passage. NBC's Duncan Golestani reports.

A group of about 20 Assange supporters, many of whom have slept on sheets of cardboard outside the building since Wednesday, have decorated barriers with messages of support for Assange.

Army is pressed on why it kept trusting Manning

Assange's attempt to avoid extradition has provoked a diplomatic tussle between Britain and Ecuador, which said London had threatened to raid its embassy and cast the dispute as an arrogant European power treating a Latin American nation like a colony.

When people are told to blindly follow orders, without questions, they descend to a lower grade of humans as they forfeit their God given talents to use their brains, minds and souls. They become clones, pawns and voiceless fools. The public and every human being has a right to know exactly how wars are conducted and why. They have a right to know how humans are treated and why. They have and must exercise that freedom. Wikileaks will prove to be the most liberating exercise a few men have had the guts to express. Thanks to them, we finally know the real truth. There are by the way three types of people : the leaders, the followers and the ones who want to know the truth as they stand firm on their ground.

"America-hating liberals"

I'm a Republican. I also served as weapons specialist. Assange is a result of my fellow solders not properly identifying the targets.

Your response is a typical blanket response from the people that are afraid of whom they pay their tax dollars to. (which is me BTW).

Ewent said "Bradley Manning was not a protestor. He was in the military. Either you abide by military regulations or you are too cowardly to follow orders."

"too cowardly"

LOL. Standing up to the biggest most technologically advanced war machine in the world - Manning smuggles out information on "illegal killings" defined by the military he served in.

Manning committed one of the most daring and brave acts of any human or soldier with a conscious toward morals and human empathy. And in the process he revealed to the American people how their tax dollars are being spent.

"Morals" were introduced into the American military at the end of the Nuremberg Trials. "A solder must question and orders given by a superior. Those orders must not conflict with the treatment of humanity. (This refers to the german military realizing that the extermination of human life (not opposing soldiers but civilian lives) must be questioned even if it means that your own life will be put into danger.

Manning contacted his C/O three times regarding what he uncovered by accident. He was ignored every time by the C/O. He followed the chain of command. It was only then that he decided (and knowing he would be jailed) that the American public be informed of the civilian murders (including two Reuters journalists and two children)

If Manning is not pardoned, the true face of our government will be revealed. Manning has already served two years WITHOUT A TRIAL. Thats right - guilty before proven innocent. That fact alone is a reflection on us (we the citizens paying our tax dollars to the military).

Wake up American citizens. Do not allow them to murder innocents with our tax dollars. You know they can do better. Force them to change. Make them more accountable.

Put the soldiers and the ones that granted permission to fire on trial - Soldiers should not fire on the civilians without positive ID for weapons/enemy combatants.

Our government is being steered in the wrong direction. Wake up - shout out ! Blog ! Protest !

And you teenagers/twentysomethings had better do something or the soldiers will be on the streets next, and they will be controlling you. Fascism does come from capitalism, the masters are the corporations. Capitalism is dominating democracy.

Good night and good luck.

If this is really about rape, shouldn't we be going after Roman Polanski who drugged and raped a 13 year old girl? Roman Polanski travels freely, he even won an academy award even though he is a fugitive wanted by Interpol. This man was found guilty of raping that little girl and fled the U.S. Julian Assange is wanted because he did the same thing that Daniel Ellsburg did by releasing the 'Pentagon Papers'.

That aside, I can't help but admire Assange's courage. I sense a Michael Moore movie in the works.....

Julian Assage did NOT rape anyone. The two alleged charges are a) Having consensual sex and not wearing a
condom. B) Having consensual sex and having two helpings instead of one. So I
say, when does consensual sex turn into rape?
Also no charges have been file what so ever. Let me remind you. The
first prosecutor in Sweden closed those allegations because there was nothing
to them. So one must ask why did Sweden find another prosecutor to reopen the
case and turn this into an international extradition case? There Are other forces at work here. Let us
not forget the video Bradley Manning released showing a US Military helicopter
shooting and killing unarmed civilians and reporter. Accountability? Yes says the US government, but not the
actual perpetrators of the murders nor of those that seek to cover up the
murders, its Bradley Manning’s fault. Doesn’t
matter who you are or what country you’re from. WE THE PEOPLE can only make
proper voting decisions if we know the truth .If truth is not our primary
principles this world will only be ran by those who believe in deceit, lies and

Countries need to get things done behind the scenes. Thinking that exposing sensitive information is beneficial no matter what is not noble, but a slap in the face to the citizens of that country who ask their elected officials to take care of the country's interest.

But elected officials don't take care of the country's interests. They take care of their own, and of the corporate lobbyists and special interests groups that influence them. The common person has *NO* influence at the federal level. None. Voting for one of 2 approved political parties is a joke, and one vote of some 200 or 300 million people? Even assuming there's not rampant vote fraud, which is possible, your chances of winning the lottery are better than of influencing anything at the fed level.

The USA is way too big, overloaded with bureaucratic rules no one person comes close to understanding. In short, it's seriously broken.

The Assage/Wili-leaks/Manning debacle is wrong they just revealed to the world all of the under-handed tricky/illegal deals of our world leaders. No Military or non-Military lives were lost , no ICBM launch codes or any Top-Secret Intel of our Military was revealed only the murdering of innocent Iraqis by a US gunship and it's crew laughing about it. The any harm caused by the revealing of these truths was embarrassment. Are there more embarrassing intel that Assange hasn't revealed that motivates this witch-hunt .... like a list of prominent Americans some politicians that have massive amounts of monies hidden in off-shore accounts so they don't have to pay US taxes on it ? http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2012/01/09/144928219/irs-revives-amnesty-program-for-offshore-tax-cheats

Assange is not a hero crusading for free speech or the public's right to know or anything even remotely resembling the underdog whisteblower being hunted by a corrupt and dangerously reckless chemical dumping company. He is an egomaniac similar to the Pierce Brosnan Bond film villain who manipulated world events for headlines to further his media empire and gain exclusive licensing in China. By publishing anything, including leaks, without regard for the consequences of lives he may be putting in danger, Assange is exactly like the person who would stand up in a crowded movie theater and yell fire. That is not free speech, protecting the public's right to know or public interest or anything remotely similar. That is just dangerous irresponsibility. Instead of any kind of asylum Assange should be having business licenses pulled and the rights to do business forefeited.

This war on terror has put the US soldier in a precarious position. This corruption in this generation has put the US citizen in a precarious position.

What are we supposed to do when we are a soldier, and we come across a video like Manning allegedly leaked to WikiLeaks? Tell me? You saw it. It was horrifying. Or what if a soldier is told beat a prisoner in Gitmo. Or you are filing a memo for your General, and you read about how they are planning to raid an innocent village, or poison the water supply. How can we prove that they they are not following the International treaties for war, when they label the evil they do, as Classified Information.

Or you are a Wall Street Trader, and you know that this trade is bogus, and worth nothing, but presenting it to your clients will get your company a big bonus of money.

Or you are a Dow chemical scientist, and you have been enlightened that your company is going to use the formulas and research of your career to market products that will not only harm the environment but will most definitely poison humans and other animals.

Do you get the picture? We good citizens of the US have been living so long playing by "their" rules, that we are confused and tormented. Do we do the right thing? If we do, is there any one out there who will support me, and give me credibility, and protect me. I did not "blow the whistle" to do this out of spite, but simply because this is the right and decent thing to do. Why? Because our government, our financial institutions, are media, our educational sytems, and now our places of worship, are not good any longer. Evil is now in charge. Evil has bought up politicians, hid scientific research from the public, allowed sexual perverts to continue to pray and molest their congregations, allow immunity for certain countries to not obey International Law, such as Israel, and then if anyone speaks up, especially in this country, gets their credibility crushed, or made a one term president like Carter.

We people better wake up and decide that we are going to stand up for what is right and just. We certainly can not leave this job to our so called leaders. We are not radical, or anti American, or anti Semitic, or a sinner, a heretic, we are simply honoring Justice.

So, he's wanted on rape charges in Sweden, but is claiming that he's hiding like the sniveling coward he is because he's afraid of the big, bad USA.

Too bad he's not actually exempt from the law, like he wants to be.

Wars are obsolete and archaic as they prove humans have a long way to go on the ladder of evolution. To expose weaknesses and misbehaviors may be the best way to serve humanity. We used to be in a " cold war" with Russia but now we are sharing the ISS and the trips back and forth to it. That is progress. No secrets and no more wars. They financially benefit a few who get very rich as they drain the rest of the tax payers population. We have now the highest suicide rate amongst soldiers. Why do you think it is ? wars are against nature and civilization.

Really? That has to be one of the most ignorant posts I've read to date. You need to take a sociology and history class. The world is not going to join hands and sing Kumbaya.

You are the one that calls exposing murders treason. Sounds like those names suit your line of thinking better.

                  Tracy Warner 766

"People like you, are truly incredible."

Tracy's fascination with a higher intelligence.

"Hitler mean anything to you, or Stalin, maybe Ivan the terrible."

Here is Tracy's inability or lack of historic education regarding the Nuremberg trials WW2 - "Morals" were introduced into the American military at the end of the Nuremberg Trials. "A solder must question and orders given by a superior. Those orders must not conflict with the treatment of humanity. (This refers to the german military realizing that the extermination of human life (not opposing soldiers but civilian lives) must be questioned even if it means that your own life will be put into danger.

"it really is too bad , you didn't get to spend some time in one of Hitler's guest camps."

I wonder that with this statement that Tracy is missing the empathy gene? I am nearly convinced that Tracy had been abused when younger and is carrying some very painful memories. This normally comes out as hateful comments to those opposing military actions.

"So you really think that humanity will advance to the point where we are all good little girls right."

Tracy demonstrates in this statement that he cannot even envision change for the human race. In fact, its likely Tracy wishes the destruction of the planet.

"Then we can sit here in our one little planet and die happily, playing jacks.."

This is a refusal to be happy. So many bad decisions were made by Tracy in his past that he cannot imagine anyone being happy is he is not, so there fore all must be unhappy.

"i sincerely hope you don't have children."

Tracy's child is in the military. tracy revealed this in another post. Tracy knows it's possible that his own child is now in another country killing other humans. We have to agree that Tracy should not have had a child. Look what Tracy's child has become: A killer for a Corporation that is steering the American Military. The true face of Tracy = the actions of Tracy's child = A murderer in the military.

Ewent said "Bradley Manning was not a protestor. He was in the military. Either you abide by military regulations or you are too cowardly to follow orders."

"too cowardly" Laughs out loud.

Wake up citizens.

The last thing this country needs is to have some opportunist to dictate what this country should and should not do. Ecuador would have done every one a good turn if they threw Assange off the balcony. Bradly Manning needs to be released, only after he has served a good part of his life (if not all) for his indespicable violation of trust. Assange is just one of many misguided soles who thinks that openly breaking US laws will gain him riches and fame. He will soon learn that being exiled has big disadvantages. He needs to man up and head for Sweden and face the music.

Violated trust in what exactly? Keeping the murders of inocent people from the world? So what you're saying is if you witness a murder you should not say anything? Yes clearly your line of thinking is exactly what the US needs to show the world exactly what it really is.

Having served in the armed forces and being deployed I can say that this idiot put a lot of our men and women serving overseas in danger. This coward should go to Swedan and answer for what he is acused of. If he is not guilty he shouldn't have to hide. The Brits should revoke Ecuadors powers and go in there and get this coward to justice. God Bless Our Armed Forces!

The Americans that have a problem with him,
must be working for the government or military
and reallying on a corrupt government for their income.
Hint: it's not unpatriotic to want a fully open government, so it's OK to support his views.

Anything a government does in the name of tax payers should be available within months.
That will give time to carry out secret combat missions, but later they need to be explained.

Hillary will even if Obama is reelected resign, probably due to the cable leaks
shows that the state department did not behave in a professional way but childish.

The global masses are being controlled from every angle and at every turn...so are we in our "Democracy"

You are spoon fed like an infant only the information "Allowed" for you to digest by those who will go to any and all measures to keep the real truth from you.

You are pesented distractions in the form of "News" on a daily basis so you will forget to Demand The Truth and be caught up in the "Sensationalism".

If an individual decides to take a bold stance on getting the real truth and actual facts revealed to those supressed masses they will be "squashed like an annoying insect"! This is the way it has been since the beginning.

History is rich with those who risk their lives to expose injustice and shed light on truth, and those in power who will not let anyone stand in their way.

Those in power have just gotten better and more sophisticated at control and supression!

                      Another Novice...

Wrong...governments are capable of hiding anything and everything they deem "classified" for however long they want. If an individual/individuals apply "freedom of information act"for disclosure, they often find the targeted info they are seeking has been blacked out by "officials" citing the always convenient excuse "national security"! End result supressed info and rendering of "freedom of information act" useless.

Government officials who send our military men & women into battle to be maimed and killed based on lies knowingly spoon fed to their citizens to justify a bogus war should... "have their skin removed one square inch at a time"

There was a story on the news last week about a rescue involving multiple citizens helping. One of those early on the scene was a news photographer who, in addition to whatever part he played in assisting the other people on scene in the rescue, waited until the conditions of the two people rescued were released before publishing the pictures he also took at the accident scene. That is the difference between why that person is a legitimate news person and why Assange and people like Assange are not protecting anyone's right to know but are simply egomaniacs using the greed of too many eager to leak anything regardless of the consequences to further their own agendas and promote their own soapboxes. Suppose one of the accident victims in the story I mentioned had died and this news guy had published the pictures of the accident before the family was notified? That is the danger of the consequences be darned mentality of people like Assange and that is precisely why they are not any kind of role models or bastions of the fight for the public's right to know.

Isn't necessary. Assange will soon be promoted to the Ecuadorian Embassy punk. It's a lifetime appointment, however long that might be. Probably one of the reasons he has taken an interest in getting out of there.

One person's leaker is a traitor or saboteur and to someone else he is a crusading hero.

Personally,I find Assange to be an anti-American ideologue. I think eventually the Ecuadorians will tire of him as a houseguest and he will be forced to leave He then will be arrested by British autorities and turned over to the Swedes or Americans to face charges. I would not want to be in his shoes.

As long as governments and individuals reduce their plans and actions to writing, and save such information on computers, the "leakers" of the world will try to expose information that further their causes. It's the CAUSE not the LEAKS that deserve our focus.Trying to harm America...which was Assange's cause...was very, very wrong.
