KABUL, Afghanistan -- A man in an Afghan police uniform shot and killed a U.S. service member on Sunday, a U.S. Defense Department official said, raising the death toll to 10 in such attacks in the space of just two weeks.
The surge in violence by Afghan allies against their international partners has raised doubts about the ability of the two forces to work together at a key transition time. Afghan forces are expected to take over security for the country by the end of 2014, when the majority of international combat forces are scheduled to leave.
On the other side, a coalition airstrike killed dozens of Taliban militants, including one of their leaders, officials said.
The U.S. defense official in Washington discussed the matter on condition of anyonymity because the official notification process had not been completed.
On Saturday Defense Secretary Leon Panetta called Afghan President Hamid Karzai to encourage him to work with U.S. commanders to ensure more rigorous vetting of Afghan recruits.
NBC's Atia Abawai explains what's behind the worsening attacks on U.S. military personnel by Afghan security and military to NBC's Andrea Mitchell.
Panetta also urged Karzai during the telephone call to work with NATO to boost counterintelligence efforts and speak more to village elders who have ties to the army and police, the Pentagon said in a statement.
"They expressed shared concern over this issue and agreed that American and Afghan officials should work even more closely together to minimize the potential" for future attacks, it added.
Few details were immediately available about Sunday's killing of a coalition member in southern Afghanistan. NATO said only that they and Afghan authorities were investigating. Afghan officials could not be reached for comment.
What's leading Afghan troops to turn on coalition forces?
The Taliban have been actively recruiting members of the Afghan security forces, saying in a statement last week that they considered these turncoat attacks a major part of their strategy against international forces.
Once an anomaly, these attacks have been climbing in recent months. There have been 30 such attacks so far this year, up from 11 in 2011.
US forces in Afghanistan ordered to keep weapons loaded at all times
On Friday it was disclosed that U.S. troops have been ordered to carry loaded weapons at all times in Afghanistan, even when they are on their bases. The order was a precaution against such insider attacks.
Ramadan attacks
The monthlong Ramadan fasting period that ended Sunday has been particularly violent. The Eid al-Fitr holiday on Sunday continued the trend.
Insurgents killed two pairs of brothers with links to the government as well as three NATO service members in three separate attacks.
In the first attack, a bomb hidden in a cemetery in the southern province of Helmand killed a police chief and his brother who were visiting a family grave for the holiday.
Seven of the men's family members were wounded in the early-morning blast in the provincial capital of Lashkar Gah, said the Helmand deputy police chief, Ghulam Rabbani.
No one claimed responsibility, but the attack was consistent with the Taliban's strategy to target authorities and others who align themselves with the government or international forces.
The two men were brothers of a lawmaker for Helmand province, Abdulwadood Popal, who was not at the cemetery at the time of the blast. The family was visiting the grave after attending a morning prayer service for the holiday, which ends the month-long Ramadan fasting period.
Later in the western Farah province, gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on the car of an intelligence service official as he was driving home from a family visit, killing him and his brother, who worked for the customs service.
Another relative was wounded, provincial deputy police chief Ghulam Ghows Malyar said.
In central Afghanistan, three NATO service members were killed when a vehicle struck a roadside bomb, officials said. Bamiyan Gov. Habiba Sarabi said the blast went off in Kohmard district while the troops were out on patrol.
NATO forces confirmed that three coalition service members were killed in a bombing, but did not provide their nationalities or other details.
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement.
Including Sunday's deaths, at least 41 international troops have been killed so far this month in Afghanistan.

This place is nothing more than a snake pit !!!
As we have all seen and our government fails to admit to the fact that Afghanistan plays both ends against the middle. Best we speed up our exit from there and let them figure it out for themselves. When you can no longer turn your back on a policeman or army officer , than it is long past time to leave.
bobi, I agree. We spent 11yrs. giving it our best shot. The culture is archiac in nature and unless we utilize genocide, we need to pull out and let them grow up on their own.
It's time to do total war without so many Rules of Engagement. ROE only puts our military at a distinct disadvantage. War is just another method of "diplomacy". You make it (war) so harsh that it saps the will of the enemy to continue. Sherman was spot n when he said "War is Hell" Let's make it so for the Taliban.
@Jack
Total war will not work there. Why ??? Because the Taliban has already won. The use of gorilla tactics is designed to destroy ones will to fight . When you walk around with your weapon LOCKED , LOADED , and OFF SAFE in a town or village you have lost . The population has turned against us and we will never be able to win them back . The government there is a bunch of thieves and liars who are only interested in lining their own pockets at any and all expense . They have sold us out along with their own country. Best we let them go back to living in the 7th century by themselves.
bob
Jack- You know that our government hasn't got the "will" to do anything militarily decisive in Afghanistan. General McChrystal gave a list of needs a few years ago to which the President and the administration withdrew 25% of the troops required for a build up and denied many other requests to push operations forward.
Here's a quick piece from the NYT on McChrysta'ls statements in 2009 (that came with his request):
"But he repeatedly warns that without more forces and the rapid implementation of a genuine counterinsurgency strategy, defeat is likely. McChrystal describes an Afghan government riddled with corruption and an international force undermined by tactics that alienate civilians. He provides extensive new details about the Taliban insurgency, which he calls a muscular and sophisticated enemy that uses modern propaganda and systematically reaches into Afghanistan's prisons to recruit members and even plan operations."
Sound famiilar? We don't want to be seen as an attacking force, so we dilute down our operations and undermine our troops just enough to be impotent. The Talliban coninues to operate while we "negotiate" with the locals, pay off Karzai for his "endorsement", and bring home a LOT of US soldiers in body bags. Obviously this is a recipe for loosing both troop morale as well as lives and the war.
Great job Barry!
If you are gonna take the glory, you are also gonna take the GORY!
I must admit a few years ago I would try to make people understand why we need to be there, and there was progress seen with schools opening, elections working out. The last year and a half or two, have changed my view completely, with the reaction to the accidental burning of the Koran, with the "insider killings" at an all time high, we need to go and just keep an eye on the Taliban with drones, and bomb them as need be.
We are trying to help them protect themselves, and they kill us for it? I could not imagine being a 20, 23 yr old soldier and having to worry about the ones you are trying to help shooting you daily. The mental stress of that would be horrendous. Imagine waking up for work each morning worrying about if your "comrade" is going to shoot you daily, or not cover you in a firefight. One could only imagine this stress without experiancing it.
@ Kevin;
Yes sir we have, our servicemen and women have done an extraordinary job, but like they say "you can lead a horse to water" well you guys know the rest. Their rejection and backsliding on the strides we have helped them with will bite them in the arse. Have fun with the Taliban, and all your women being repressed again, and no music,no freedom, let us know how that is working for ya.
Withdraw now. I did not believe I would be saying that at all, unfortunately. I really can not stomach someones son or daughter being shot by the ones they try to help. The ME, seems destined to stay in the stoneages.
I don't know how many other old vets ever read these posts, but as an old vet, Reading about these "insider" shootings just really pisses me off...especially since i have a young marine getting ready to deploy, at least the brASS, has allowed soldiers to have loaded weapons...ever hear of something so stupid, we coudn't have loaded weapons because WE might accidently shoot someone...they tried that in vietnam in 71', same results, charlie new of this so took advantage, even though it only takes a few seconds to lock and load, thats all it takes for the enemy to pull the trigger....Panetta better get his head and the heads of his commanders out of their collective asses and change the rules of engagement....better yet get the hell out of there and let the rock apes fight it out among themselves.
Please - don't insult the snakes.
When the world is in need of an enema, the nozzle is inserted directly into Afghanistan.
screw the ROE...GET OUT and do it now. we have wasted enough money and lives !!
the Taliban has infiltrated all of Afghan government, army, police force, and will take over the country 1 day after we leave, let us leave now, notice the PC bull coming out of Washington, it is always some one wearing a Afgan uniform, they do not say a Afghan policeman or solider!
All these years of losing our children in the Middle East Wars and this is what we get in return. Pull out and let them have Afghanistan. You can't win when you can't see the enemy.
This latest killing is all the more reason to accelerate our departure from that ungrateful flea bitten sand trap of a nation where we are neither appreciated nor wanted! It has cost us way too much in blood already!
I feel that we have exceptional men and women over there fighting a endless battle. These areas have always waged war and always will. I think we should bring our U.S. military home...yesterday! We are supplying these insugents with weapons and even skills. I've had a brother in Afghanastan and now have a son-in-law there who's with the paramedic flight team. Who can we even trust over there? Not the ones we are training and not the leaders. Our country cannot afford to keep losing lives, not to mention the economy. My grandsons are seperated from their father and eveyone over there are away from their entire families. I know they can't openly plan a departure...but need to leave under cover ASAP!!!
We are dealing with a culture that is @1,000yrs. more juvinile than ours. The culture is tribal and they love to fight amoungst themselves even though they all share the same religion (multiple diff. sects of the Muslim religion). This is not a culture in which you can "nation build" unless you FULLY conquer and completely change the culture. Unfortunately this cannot be done utilizing any "ethical" or conventional warfare methods.
How is Afghani culture more juvenile than ours? From a quick read I did, they have been around since 2000 BC. Most Americans ancestors were leaving in caves or hunting in spears at that time.
I think he meant their behavior is more juvenile, out for their own agendas instead of what's best for the community at large.
Melvin, I agree. I think Kevin was referring to socially and culturally. Not length of time in the region.
IT'S time to go,,, BRING 'EM ALL HOME, Our guys and gals need a long rest, at HOME
LET THE LITTLE ANIMALS KILL THEMSELVES
----------------
Future problems... send in 'da DRONES
GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS
Perhaps its time that our side started unprovoked shootings on their forces, might as well get out there where everyone is equal! Its a war and we are losing again because we are too nice.
Sauve, it is desgusting but we have only 2 choices in Afganastan: Drones or Genocide
Kevin: I like and prefer a third option; withdraw quickly over the next few months. The genocide will follow, the Afghans will bring that upon themselves. And drones will follow as Al Qaida return with the Taliban and get fat and happy.
I think it's high time that we call it quits. When will the leadership realize that it's a wasted venture to continue to support the country. Pull our troops out and bring them home, stop funding and let the UN decide what to do.
Two days after the election.
If we could just get Justin Bieber to do a concert tour in the ME, the girls would be ripping off their burkas and the men would realize they have no choice but to surrender to us.
And, this November, vote out any bastard who supports continuation of this war and who would support ANY involvement in Syria, Iran or any other god-forsaken cat litter box over there. PERIOD.
We pretty Much know how that turns out, Somalia is still working itself out. Good Thing is the Afghans Don't Have a Navy.
Late 2014 just seems to far away for my liking. Two more years, more US soldiers killed, and for what. Nothing, because once we depart that country will implode in no time and become a loose collection of dark age fifedoms.
The Americans are finally realizing something the British learned in 1842 and the Soviets learned in 1989. The Afghan culture is a very primitive, uncivilized, and xenophobic one where the savages hate all outsiders, especially infidels. They will use any means necessary and kill as many outsiders as possible to force them out. Life means nothing to these savages. Their hatred for the Soviets seemed pretty general. But these days, I imagine some of them, especially in the ruling class, are torn between wanting the Americans to leave and and wanting them to keep shoveling billions of dollars into their tribal coffers.
Cat, the people of this primitive culture live to kill EACH OTHER even when there are no outsiders.
Kevin...right on, If you read ancient middle eastern history these people were nomads that wandered with their flocks, Iranians became the pastorals that built cities and "civilization"...they've been fighting ever since, the only thing they have in common is hate for outsiders messin around in their affairs...when we leave they will go back to killin each other over fueds that go back a dozen generations because someone stole a goat or looked at another mans wife....All we are there for is to keep Karzai in power, when we leave he will either be on last pane with us or strung up by his scrawny neck and stoned to death....
When you talk about using any means necessary, you have no idea!
A good friend of mine just returned from a tour, he is a medical doctor. He is having a hard time sleeping and is visibly upset.
For a long time he wouldn’t talk about what was bothering him, so one day I asked. I wanted to know if seeing and treating all the young men who were being killed and maimed had gotten to him.
He opened up and told me “no, it wasn’t the soldiers, it was the children”. He explained.
The Taliban go into a village and find the village elder. The have him and all of his family line up and force all the other villagers to watch. They ask him to plant IED’s to kill the Americans or NATO soldiers. If he refuses, they take a 55 gallon drum of water or oil and place it over a fire. When the contents are boiling they ask him again. If he still refuses they take his youngest child and start dipping that child into the boiling liquid. If that child dies, they go to the next child and start the process all over until all of the children dead or the elder agrees to plant the IEDs.
We need to pull out of all the "an's and aq's" let them do what they are going to do to each other. We need to realize that these are poorer than poor countries, and all it takes is a little bit of money to bribe nearly anyone to kill Americans or whom ever. Therefore, no one in these countries can be counted out as potential terrorists or assassins.
Planting a bomb at a grave sight in order to kill the family who is visiting the grave site. HINT, HINT, HINT, FREEKIN HINT about the culture we are dealing with in Afganastan?
Right kevin, but you gotta remember the guy in the box probably had stole the bombers great grandfathers goat, and he was just getting some payback....
We need to get our guys out NOW! They can protect our borders and the U. S. internally. The only reason our people are into other wars is it keeps the jobs flowing but also kills our men and women. Stay out of other countries problems unless it is ours!
Judsi, I wish it was that simple but it is not. We need two major things in the ME: Oil and protection of Israel. Also, military power trumps everything (even economics). What we can physically control enables our standard of living.
I was driving past a girl scout camp in Kabul and the girls were standing around a camp fire, dressed in burkas with AK47s in their hands chanting "Death to the Easter Bunny!!! abadabadabadabadabababa dooo!!"
Why do want to control Afganastan? There must be a logical reason
KEVIN
It is called OPIUM !!! Big Big money in the drug trade. Just ask the CIA !!! They have been running drugs for many many years now . Does Vietnam and air America ring any bells for you ???
bob, very exactly true. However popis can be grown and opium produced in other areas that have the same climate. Why Afganastan is so valuable for its opium is that it is huge and of the highest grade. They have been growing it for centuries and the profund amount of popi they grow trumps any other nation. Their trade market is valuable because of the quantity and quality in which they produce popi, thus low cost and high quality.
politics
Why is so difficult to understand that is you are an invading military fource, occupying someone else country, killing innocent civilians, and installing a puppet govenment that they are going to fight back. Would not we do the same thing? Remember, we are their enemy so what would you expect?
When the time comes the lines are blurred between the Good Guys and the Bad Guys it's time to leave, I had hoped we had learned a lesson in Vietnam but that is not the case. Pull Our Troops Out, We don't need to spend any More of Our Precious Troops and Resources on this Sh!thole. We have two choices, Make War or Make Tracks. These Folks understand nothing less than total subjugation, if this is War, We are Fighting in a Manner Consistent with Losing. We have the Best Trained Troops with the Most Advanced Weaponry and We are tying their hands with Rules of Engagement that get them Killed, Time to Leave
Bring our troops home and let the Taliban have this Hell hole and the people that live there. Then at the first sign of a terrorist training camp nuke the place.
Your, we have no choice but to control Afganistan, so wake up and get use to it.
I am very much awake. But there is no need to have our troops there when we nuke these idiots. So wake up and get use to it.
We do not need to control Afghanistan. Where are you getting this nonsense from? The American public is suffering from the Military Industrial Complex. We need to stop occupying nations and actually work towards promoting peace. Everyone should know by now that the US is only over there for money. Afghanistan and Iraq have high amounts of natural gas (the pipeline) and Afghanistan has lithium and opium. Instead of actually trading with countries we enact war and take what we want. Our troops are dying because of the greed of the world wide elite, not just America.
The Taliban have been actively recruiting members of the Afghan security forces, saying in a statement last week that they considered these turncoat attacks a major part of their strategy against international forces
can you really call death threats against ones family to die for the taliban recruiting? lol
how do you get one to serve as a terrorist talban awnser kill one of the family member threaten the rest
lol recruiting talis not going to happen only threatening talis to get your serves
sadsadsad
control it? You'd have to put 500,000 troops there oh that's right we did that in vietnam and that sure was a success there is no reason to be there the taliban don't have a navy or air force to threaten us. somebody is making money that's the only reason we are there. Bring the troops home we need them on our border and pretty soon in our cities.
Don't know much about geography or war fighting do you? Afghanistan and Iraq are both about the size of California if not larger. Try controlling that much area with a few tens of thousands of men. On top of that, only about 1 in ten troops is a trigger puller, the rest are REMFs, rear echelon mo'fo's who keep the others supplied and supported. Now considering that, redo your armchair general calculus. The geology of Afghanistan is daunting, but it is nothing at all like Viet Nam. As a remote sensing specialist, the two are as different as night a day. No where to hide in Afghanistan but underground. Sensors are king in Afganistan. Vietnam would be more of a cake walk today then it was 40 years ago. Charlie would not own the night, we own it today. Thermal and night vision equipment have taken the night away from the enemy. Check out the UTube vids, particularly the one where Apache helos hunt down and kill every man in a group of about 20-30 taliban. They find and kill every one, even the ones crawling in ditches. Its no wonder they have turned to doglike tactics of shooting their "allies" in the back. The taliban harbored Al Qaeda who did have an "air force" on Sept 11.
Just a fact about Afghanistan in less than four years deaths are more than double under President Obama vs President Bush's six and a half years.
You won't hear this information from Socialist agenda pushing MS/NBC.
Time to leave, and no financial support for these backwards people.
Am proud of U.S. Service Members and respect what they go through every day. Hope our leaders have the courage to just end that war, there isn't much honor left in staying there. Know that is probably over simplifying it but there will never be a perfect outcome anyway.
F--king morons in Washington, led by the nose by f--king morons on the board of Big Oil...
You armed and trained Alkayduh, and look what that got us.
You armed other tribes before, and look what that got us.
Now you're arming them all over again, guess what it's going to get us...
The next time, I hope it's your offices, your families, your friends who pay the price of your stupidity.
The middle east cannot be trusted. They continue to prove it time and time again. And you continue not to learn.
I can't blame them any longer - not when it's clear who the real terrorists are.
There is little or no oil in Afhanistan. Minerals certainly. The Chinese are beating down the doors trying to tie up all the concessions to Afghani mineral deposits. Your bias against the oil companies is showing, and without those Big Oil companies, your life would be shiit including your standard of living. Oil made this country and still does. When oil came on the scene, we were still lighting our homes with whale oil, heating with wood and coal and riding horses or walking to work. Not a think you touch in your pathetic daily grind, is not impacted by, or made with oil. Unless you live in cave and wear fur and eat what you kill, you are a pathetic hypocrite.
Well, I do eat what I kill, I don't wear synthetic fibers.. however cave-dwelling is a bit tricky with all these zoning ordinances, water-rights, and the fact that, at least in my area, most caves are found on State Parks, and they tend to get a little pissy if you try to move in...
I'd be glad to ride a horse to the office, except there is a small issue with riding them along interstate highways, but I remedied that issue a little over two years ago, when I bought a Tesla Roadster.
Yes, I have to spend all day Sunday sitting around home, letting it charge, but that's fine, there's nothing I need do on Sundays anyways, though sometimes I like walk down to the river in the back and watch the water inlet draw in river water, run it through the hydro-generator, and dump in back into the river again. Sometimes too I like to lay back, listen to the water, and imagine some poor Shiek having to tell his 11th son how he can't afford to buy him a solid siver mercedes too because I've gone through such lengths to eliminate as much dependance on black-blood (aka oil) as I possibly can.
But no, muddy, my life would be just fine without Big Oil. I'm more than able to grow my own food, and live, as we were meant to live - as a part of the natural world.
In fact, I think your artificial lifestyle is twice as "shiit" and the leading cause of most modern illness, unwellness, and unhappiness. Fortunately, I can console myself by knowing, should the lights fail, the sattelites fall from the sky, and the human race were forced to survive... I take great comfort in knowing you would not be among those who live through the first year.
I openly admit my biases - Big Oil, Big Pharm, Wall Street, Big Government - all factors in the socio-political cancer that is killing humanity.
The thing people fail to understand, is that these guys are not radical Muslims. They are just doing what Mohammed would have them to. That is what they are being told. Death to Infidels is t the root of Islam. Mainstream muslim clerics tell thier followers that based on the Quran that infidels are one of the 9 things that are unclean to good Muslims. Dogs, pigs, urine, feces, infidels, blood, corpses, and liquor. So in other words, Muslims think that none muslims are akin to shiit. So much for freindly muslims, eh? Muslims will lie to your face if it benefits their religion and furthers their goal of Islamification of the world. If there has been one constant in the history of this so called "religion" is conquest and expansion. I consider every muslim a ticking bomb. They have amply demonstrated that fact over the centuries, and more recently in the US over the last 10 years or so. Why should anyone be surprised that they will act like dogs and cowardly shoot the people they profess to be friends with, when they privately consider them nothing more than a steaming pile? They probably go home and wash their hands after dealing with you. How else could someone grow up being taught this kind of stuff without them believing it. After all, the Islamic world is made up of the majority of the world's illiterate and backward peoples. They only even deal with us because it benifits them, and Mohammed told them that it was permissible to lie to kafirs or infidels if it was in the benefit to Islam.
This is not rocket science, so I fail to see how people can recognize it for what is: Nobody, but nobody wants an occupying army in their country, ergo, even the Jews did it, not as Afghans or Iraqis, to the Romans. Everybody does it, so why not the Afghans? "Billions" help, but not all would sell their country for a plate of lentils, ergo, the Afghans, and I don't blame them, are going to do whatever it takes, include suicide bombings, to get them out of there. Yes, I know the super coward from Wyoming see the world through its own prism, but the rest of the wolrd doesn't, ergo, the baloney"They will receive us with open arms" didn't have a fine print, but maybe that is what he meant referring to suicide bombers, but he didn't explain. That means he didn't believe it either.
Let's take the Pentagon's bull sh*it and call it a "victory" and get the hell out yesterday. If the retard pervert from Texas call his second great depression like "the basics of the economy are strong", doesn't all the BS that comes, came aftrwards just more of the same? Yes, it is. Don't believe what the government says, nor what politicians says, nor what the fourth power says, they are on the same side spewing the same baloney. W3e are not winning, we are not going to win and the worse part, look how many livesm wasted, how many billions wasted so corporations rake in billions more while America is left trillions in debt and when tea partiers, republicans look for solutions, they just want more tax breaks for the crook, criminals of alwas ane we the people are left holding the bag. Are the voters stupid? You can say that again. Are the voters stupid? Yes, but why deaf and mute? Go figure!
Why do you have to start the article with, "A man in a police uniform"? Tell it like it is HE IS AN AFGAN POLICE OFFICER trained, paid and support by the stupid US. Where is the Afgan outrage? Where is the apology from Cash Money Karzai? It is obvious to a new born baby that we are not winning anything in Afganistan and the war should have ended years ago not 2014.
We are there for one reason, that is to protect their poppy fields and work deals with drug dealers. The US will probably be legalizing Heroin in the next decade or so and our Phamaceutical companies will need a steady supply of Opium, watch and see.
No burned Koran here, so where are our politically correct Generals and Politicians? Why are they silent in this issue? Where is the US or western countries Islamic outrage against these deaths? Answer THERE IS NONE!!! No they can kill or arrest any CHRISTIAN in an Islamic country that they want to with no condemnation. Obama is silent cause he is a MUSLIM, no matter what he claims. He is definitely the Manchurian candidate!!! There is no reasoning with MUSLIMS. They kill and destroy all who come into their path. They will never, ever, stop plotting our deaths. Such a noble and peaceful religion. Oops and they still blame us for the Crusades? What a contrived argument cemented in BS!!!!
Bill, there is no outrage in Washington from the Dems or Republicans, NONE. People are making tons of money off of these wars and they want to display as little outrage as possible. I can only imagine the morale of the soldiers over there getting shot by the people we are helping and training. We need to get out of that cesspool asap.
Obama is not silent because you say he is Muslim, it's deeper than that...he needs to win states who are making money off of the war and don't want to scare them off. As for the Manchurian Candidate, no comment.
WE NEED TO GET OUT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is such BS,..its time to go!
What are our troops to these politicians,...chess pieces????
Well,..they aren't, they are people with families who love them and lives to live!!
If Obama decides to get them out now,..I will vote for him.
If not,..I will vote for Romney!
They are third world and they will stay that way,..there are others much like them who will reinforce their way of life untill the end of time.
When do our troops lives come first?
Return the honor with which they fight with the right decision for a job well done,..bring them home!!!!!!!!!!
