Bulldozer wrecks Sufi mosque and graves in Libya sectarian attack

Libyan Islamist hardliners use a bulldozer to raze the mausoleum of Al-Shaab Al-Dahman near the centre of Tripoli on Saturday.

Attackers bulldozed a mosque containing Sufi Muslim graves in the center of Tripoli in broad daylight on Saturday, in what appeared to be Libya's most blatant sectarian attack since the overthrow of Moammar Gadhafi.

Government officials condemned the demolition of the large Sha'ab mosque and blamed an armed group who, they said, considered its graves and shrines to Sufi figures un-Islamic.

It was the second razing of a Sufi site in two days. Ultra-conservative Islamists wrecked Sufi shrines with bombs and another bulldozer and set fire to a mosque library in the city of Zlitan in the early hours of Friday, an official said.

Libya's rulers have struggled to control armed groups who are competing for power in the north African country a year after Gadhafi’s fall.

A grave sits empty after Libyan Salafis Muslims destroyed a Sufi mosque in central Tripoli Saturday.

The president of Libya's newly elected National Congress, Mohamed al-Magariaf, called the prime minister to an emergency meeting on Sunday.

"What is truly regrettable and suspicious is that some of those who took part in these destruction activities are supposed to be of the security forces and from the revolutionaries," Magariaf told reporters on Saturday night.

He did not elaborate on how security forces took part.

The English-language Libyan Herald news site reported that three journalists from the Al-Assema television station were detained by security forces as they tried to cover the destruction.

It said their detention was “a clear violation of press freedom in Libya”.

Security forces “sought to cordon off the site throughout the demolition and were hostile to any attempts by journalists to cover the situation,” it reported.

Goran Tomasevic / REUTERS

An uprising in Libya ousts dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

A Reuters reporter saw the bulldozer level the Sha'ab mosque as police surrounded the site and prevented people from approaching and did not stop the demolition.

Inside the mosque, empty graves lay gaping in the rubble.

"A large number of armed militias carrying medium and heavy weapons arrived at the al-Sha'ab mosque with the intention to destroy the mosque because of their belief graves are anti-Islamic," said a government official who declined to be named.

He told Reuters that authorities tried to stop them but, after a small clash, decided to seal off the area while the demolition took place to prevent any violence spreading.

"The SSC (Libya's Supreme Security Council) joins the ... condemnation," said council spokesman Abdel Moneim al-Hurr.

Pictures and video of the attack were posted on Twitter by user Thanku4theanger.

A man who appeared to be overseeing the demolition told Reuters the interior ministry had authorized the operation after discovering people had been worshipping the graves and practicing "black magic". The ministry was not available for comment.

One of Libya's highest-profile cultural clashes since the toppling of Gadhafi has been between followers of the mystical Sufi tradition and ultra-conservative Salafis, who say Islam should return to the simple ways followed by its prophet.

Salafis have formed a number of armed brigades in Libya. They reject as idolatrous many Sufi devotions - which include dancing and the building of shrines to venerated figures.

Conservative Muslims across the region - emboldened by the Arab Spring revolts - have targeted Sufi sites in Egypt, Mali and other parts of Libya over the past year.

The assaults recalled the 2001 dynamiting by the Taliban of two 6th-century statues of Buddha carved into a cliff in Bamiyan in central Afghanistan.

Could sun-soaked Libya be the Mediterranean's next tourism hot spot?

The Sha'ab mosque housed close to 50 Sufi graves inside and, outside, the tombs of Libyan Sufi scholar Abdullah al-Sha'ab and a martyr who fought Spanish colonialists.

A picture shows the destroyed section of the mausoleum of Al-Shaab Al-Dahman near the centre of Tripoli on Saturday after Islamist hardliners bulldozed part of the revered mausoleum in the second such attack in Libya in two days.

On Friday attackers razed the revered resting place of Abdel Salam al-Asmar in Zlitan, about 160 km (90 miles) west of the capital, and also set fire to a historic library in a nearby mosque, ruining thousands of books.

The destruction followed two days of clashes between tribal groups in Zlitan, said a local official.

"The extremist Salafis took advantage (of the fact) that security officials were busy calming down the clashes and they desecrated the shrine," Zlitan military council official Omar Ali told Reuters.

Sufi scholar and caretaker of the Asmar shrine in Zlitan Mohammed Salem said the government was coming under increasing political pressure from ultra-conservatives.

A Facebook page titled "Together for the Removal of the Abdel Salam al-Asmar Shrine" congratulated supporters on the "successful removal of the Asmar shrine, the largest sign of idolatry in Libya."

dannyo53 -- Don't be so smug. Christianity has its own twisted history. Such things as the Spanish Inquisition and the destruction of European, Native American, Mayan, African and Asian religions and customs. All changed by force and torture when necessary. No religion on this planet has clean hands.

We aren't talking about history here. This is in real time.

Since the U.S. & allies are spending a fortune in blood and treasure to promote democracy, and democratic ideals such as religious tolerance in some of these situations (along with protecting self-interest), it's a report card.

I'm not speaking as a Christian, in case you missed that part freedomfrys. The point is that in places like Libya, Iraq, Mali, Iran...the march is backwards. You tell me why. By the way...I don't care about your religious preference either way.

I don't think he is being smug, just pointing out the obvious. Really is no surprise that radical Islamics are behaving in such a manner, not to mention no "authorities" even tried to stop it. IMO this is just the beginning. If we "help" Syria it will be the same way.

The Islamists destroy everything anywhere that does not please them. They destroyed the giant statues of the Buddha in Afghanistan, and they are doing similar destructive work in Mali right now. The Sufis are the "flower children" of Islam and the Islamists are the Southern Baptists of Islam. In that respect, they are similar to the people on Newsvine who collapse other peoples comments if they displease them. It's the same mentality in both cases.

So much for the all accepting, peaceful Religion of Islam. When is the leaders of Islam going to rise up and denounce these acts of barbarism. Oh I forgot they are the ones causing it.

If Islam can not act and evolve into the modern world peacefully then maybe it should join the other extinct religions of the past.

Libya post Gadaffi is nothing but a country full of armed militias and tribal chieftains with what passes for a government having somewhat control of a few cities.

I know people don't like to hear this but Libya under Gadaffi was a peaceful and relatively well run country with a decent measure of prosperity for its citizens. Gadhaffi was certainly no saint but relative to the other Arab rulers, he was no worse and by some measures, better.

For Libya, the worst is yet to come.

Long live the Arab Spring where the young with their "Twitter" and "Facebook" Revolutions find they were just useful idiots for their conservative religious hardline relatives. It's gonna get a whole lot worse before it gets worse. Muslims killing Muslims sounds about par for the course. It's a brotherhood until you start mentioning the succession (Shia/Sunni), but of course before that both of them have to gang up and start eliminating Sufi, Druze, etc.

Damn, sounds like that old Catholic pogram against the Cathars and other heretics, followed by Protestants taking issue and going against Catholics till both beat each other up enough to establish their home turf.

Humans stoned out on religion are some of the most vile animals on the planet.

@LEFTISTREPORTING why should it when followers of the Prince of Peace are still doing acts of barbarism and demanding to be protected when committing those acts? Maybe christianity should grow up itself and quit acting like it's above secular law before talking down to different faiths. Another ultra-conservative religious fundamentalist wants to hold the most powerful office in this nation. That should concern those of us who actually LIKE freedom.

    I'malwayswrite,

Well that isn't a backhoe in the picture either. That is a full fledged demolition excavator.

The difference? A backhoe is typically used with a dump truck for demolishion of small buildings and excavation of sewer lines and small building foundations. The excavator will be used with large dump trucks and semi-trailers in mines and bulk material yards, or in demolition of large masonary or reinforced buildings. Sort of like David vs. Goliath.

Who do yuou think ther Salafists are? Or the Wahhabis? They are the ultra religious stemming from Saudi Arabia (the imams and their backers with oil monies) Saudi Arabia destroyed all the pilgrims graves when the Family of Saud usurped power from the Hashemites. The graves from various pilgrims to Mecca were located in Jeddah-only Google shows images where they once were located. These puritanic Salafists (the rebels have plenty of them)have destroyed Libya's Heritage and Culture- before Obama's airwar in Libya started- the rebels falsely claimed that Quaddafi forces hiding in the ancient sites- their bluff was called in by Unesco. Now they destroyed the Sufi mosque/library-mausoleum/grave yards. European graveyards- they also have summarily executed thew SubSaharans (racist intolerance to max in all Mughreb countries) holding them w/o access tgo Red Cross/Crescant (that is an international agreement) unaccounted, unseen and Obama and HRC have not given one peep about any of these atrocities . In Egypt they have destroyed Copts' properties- Napoleon's Library- Sinai excursions (the caves in Halal mountains-bedouin culture)Mali's (world's)oldest mosque destroyed. They are hellbent in destroying Sufi pilgramage sites all over whre they can get their foothold in- Kashmir-Iraq. Did Obama/HRC miscalculate in giving these rebel renegades/salafists the means (money+modern weaponry)the ways (intel+communications equipment) .Yes,they did;they also created an underground rebel colony which goes to Syria-Egypt-Iraq-AAfghanistan (especially the Maghreb dual citizens). The MB (Muslim Brotherhood) is pretending to be 'reasonable-abiding by international agreements' while their brethen scheme to usurp all the power-install the Sunni/Salafi theocracies all over ME first- they are also in Jordan- Bedouins rescued King Abdullah's father many times from them. Now Hamas in Gaza is the entity going to Iran's NAM meeting and PA/Abbas is nonplused.

Perrhaps we ought to visit upon Mecca, a 10megaton+ nuclear warhead with the promise to wipe the Kaaba from the face of the earth; along with a smaller bomb, 5-10 kiloton, under the Dome of the Rock. Neither should bother the Saudi royal family much, since it has already torn down over 70% of Mohammed's Mecca. Of course, the haj will disappear, as will Saudi pre-eminence in the Muslim world, since the most sacred spot will simply be a radioactive hole in the ground. I am tired of these "zealots" feeling free to destroy everyone else's tradition and history without cost.

And if terrorism rises, direct more of our REAL WMD's on Muslim population centers. And I am usually fairly liberal and toleratant. But these wars will never end until these crimes end.

That, and these are the second least evolved race on the planet. (ref, Coral Taxi)

But I think there is a definite correlation between heat and violence, look at Mexico, of course, the argument could be made for violence and evolution too. ;-)

        "Promising things like 72 Virgins"

I don't know where that myth of 72 virgins comes from. It may be from the Hadith if it is from any Islamic source at all, but I have read the entire Quran from cover to cover, and I have no recollection of the Quran saying anything at all about 72 virgins.

        DumbFarmBoy,

Thanks for responding. I did some research on it since I posted that, and I found out that the myth of the 72 virgins comes mainly from one Hadith which, if I remember correctly, was written by al-Tarmidhi. But it is a Hadith that is considered suspect as to its authenticity by most Muslims. It is not one of the authoritative Hadiths like those of Bukhari or Sahih Muslim. The Quran does mention something about virgins called "houris" that are supposed to inhabit paradise, but it doesn't specify any number. Most Muslim mystics interpret the whole myth of virgins in paradise as simply a metaphor for the presence of God. I don't know if it is something they actually tell suicide bombers, but I agree that it is largely used as propaganda by Westerners who like to portray Muslims as a bunch of ignorant monkeys.

I believe our Arab Spring was on 911!! Think about it! Europe now has gettos of young arabs that are starting to turn violent as they are instructed. And much of these problems are being with held from our news media. Friends of mine in Switzerland are very concerned about what's beginning to happen over there. One of Libya's highest-profile cultural clashes since the toppling of Gadhafi has been between followers of the mystical Sufi tradition and ultra-conservative Salafis, who say Islam should return to the simple ways followed by its prophet.

I do believe they destroy only those things that others use and believe because their 7th century minds have not evolved beyond Mohammed's life. Even the Catholic Church has stopped defaming other religions!

One strain of islam-salafist-bulldosed the graves and mosque of ANOTHER BRANCH OF ISLAM, Sufis. Sufi islam is peaceful and tolerant. Salafists are most certainly not. It is Salafist muslims who are causing problems world wide, mostly by trying to force their beliefs on OTHER MUSLIMS who hold different beliefs. Yet most US comments miss this point and lump them all together, the aggressosr and their most common victims, in the same bowl.

Great Comment. Any chance in getting the media (NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX et alia) to report that viewpoint of differentiation of the sects of Islam? I did not see that anywhere in the report. It also may help stymie a lot of the vitriolic comments on these posts.

I believe tolerance is the only method that will enable people to live life to the fullest extent possible.

Many Americans DO "lump it all together". Us versus "them". (You know, THEM - those people who believe "this", who look like "that", who do "this", etc. They are "evil", "abnormal", "unnatural", or "primitive", and these adjectives are applied to entire groups of people abroad and at home. So much easier than "thinking".

Hi Jack from Jax! I and three other people had a bit of fun with word play in a comment thread the other day that in no way was offensive, mean spirited, partisan, or directed at you, and you said:

"Seems like you "four" Bozos - EngEsq, JTM-890765, Nikolaus20 and Vahid Trazan-5311412 either have multiple personalities, quad- joined at the head morons, or another alternative reality existence and each are the same person using multiple identities to come up with the same, redundant BS. Get a life and be productive."

Have you read my comments here? Am I productive enough for you? Do I sound like a moron, a bozo, someone without a life? Before bashing people, try clicking on their screen name and reading other comments that they've left, instead of making assumptions based on one.

There are good and bad members of all religions, and Islam, like any religion, can be twisted by fanatics to any end. During the Reformation in the west, Protestants (in England, especially) destroyed monasteries, convents, stained glass windows, altars, and centuries old works of art in their quest to root out "idolatry", yet Christianity is the same religion that inspired Protestants like the Quakers and Mennonites, who are pacifists.

Don't blame religious fanatics alone for intolerance. Political and ideological systems having nothing to do with religion have also committed atrocities in the name of "the people". In places like Libya, religious differences are conflated with by tribal mentalities that trump the very notions of brotherhood that they espouse. Educated Muslims don't think like this. The problems that we see in the Middle East aren't caused by Islam per se. We are witnessing the awakening of cultures which haven't changed since the Middle Ages. With that will come conflict, and much of that will be religious. It happened in the west too, some 500 years ago.

Why when trying to pretend Islam is no worse than other religions do people have to go back hundreds of years for examples? The rest of the worlds religions became civilized, it's time for Muslims to catch up. More acts of violence by far are committed by Muslims than all other religions combined.

@Nikolaus20, That's interesting what you say, I've been thinking about this from a differeent direction. Japan had its Feudalism years and developed onto a unified Nation.

This part of the World, since the days of the Roman Empire, has not been allowed to do their developement in the same manner. Always being invaded one way or another, influenced in one way or another, and I think it has come to a head. The wars of Emires, shakes, and Emmerites must run to it's natural conclusion. The less outside interference the better. But, this is going to take time, years in fact for each country to be truly united as a country

Yes, I have read books on Islamic history. If you're saying that they had a decent economy and government compared to medieval Europe, maybe. If you don't mind them making all "infidels" fifth class citizens and stoning women to death. And having slaves. And the poor being very poor. But go on and apologize for Islam using 500 year old references.

Oh, and have you EVER been to one of their countries? As a woman? Ever preached the gospel or given away a Bible?

That's pretty unkind and harsh language, both against Muslims and against me, especially for one who calls herself a "Christian". I guess Mahatma Gandhi was right when he said that most Christians do not really follow the teachings of Christ.

"The core texts and teachings of Islam teach warfare against and subjugation of non-Muslims. Those who commit violence in the name of Islam can and do point to those teachings to justify their actions, and armed group of Muslims are committing violence in the name of Islam on a virtually daily basis around the world. There are, by contrast, no armed groups committing violence in the name of Judaism and Christianity and justifying them by reference to the Torah or the New Testament, and those religions do not teach the necessity to wage war against and subjugate unbelievers"

Any Muslim that doesn't piously follow the rigid, violent Koran and obey the draconian Sharia law is deemed to be Un-Islamic subject to all the violence and intolerance that Islam can dish out...In this the Sufis are not alone, Muslims also persecute and attack the Ahmadi Muslims...and any Muslims who do not answer the call to jihad (and there are many forms of jihad) will be considered an Infidel and is subject to be treated an Infidel...this usually results in death..

Not only is the draconian Sharia law taking hold in Libya, it is taking hold anywere on earth where Muslims are attacking...such as in Egypt, Syria, Tunisia,Sudan, and several other countries...

If you do not know about Sharia law, I suggest you do your homework and learn about it...

Must have been an invisible "dozer" in the pics. Try a "Excavator". Or commonly known as a "track hoe". A Excavator does not push "doze" rubble or dirt.

Most likely have the low paid interns doing the stories again. NBC lately has been having some quality issues with their stories. At least this one is minor but it does lead to being suspect of other information reported on this site.

Wolf--probably called a bulldozer because everyone knows what one is and what it does. Makes it easier to grab a reader's attention, get them to read the article and thus show those wonderful little ads for them to click on! Besides, who's to say an actual bulldozer didn't get there first?

                                #19.3 - Sun Aug 26, 2012 1:58 PM EDT

@ Wolf, I was thinking the same thing, inept reporting(Duh, a track hoe ain't a bulldozer) (or at least inaccurate), but Slick makes a good point, and perhaps the track hoes are there for the clean up. Since no one may have gotten a picture of the dozers doing their thing, they got picture of the clean up.

The captions on the pictures are misleading though.

A liberal would tell you, that's just an insignificant detail, don't worry about it, we knew they meant. But let a Conservative, make a similar error, they have to Quote it verbatim, not what he/she meant, but what he/she said.

Muslims have been known to destroy Christian and Jewish cemetaries, the Muslims have dug up the graves to make room for Muslims to be buried...On some occasions the Muslims have converted the dead bodies to Islam..Muslims have attacked wedding ceremonies where Music was being played (the most pious Muslims consider music to be Un-Islamic), they have attacked funerals...they even executed a bicycle ice cream vendor (maybe his little bell was Un-Islamic)...There's a long list of things that offend Muslims...just google "things that offend Muslims". And being a Muslim won't neccessarily save you from Islam...Just look at all the Muslim vs Muslim violence....and then look at its cause...it's Islam...

They will do just about anything in the name of their hollier than thou religion even if it means killing or desicrating other muslims in the process. They need to read their Kuran an act on the tolernace of others so that all can live peacefully instead of being offended and killing everyone that doesnt agree on everything they do. They will continue to live in the stone age if they do not stop acting like barbarians.
