Subscribe to RSSSyrian President Bashar al-Assad makes a rare public appearance by giving an interview to a pro-government news channel in Syria. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.
Calm. Defiant. Confident. That’s how embattled Syrian President Bashar Assad appeared in a lengthy interview on Wednesday evening on the pro-government news channel, Al Donnya.
The interview had the feel of a casual conversation rather than the hard-hitting questioning of a leader who is unleashing the might of his military on his country.
Even as Assad spoke, rights groups were documenting new outrages they say have been perpetrated on civilians.
U.S.-based Human Rights Watch on Thursday said Syrian jets and artillery have struck at least 10 bakeries in Aleppo in the last three weeks, killing dozens of people as they waited in line to buy bread.
"The attacks are at least recklessly indiscriminate and the pattern and number of attacks suggest that government forces have been targeting civilians," the group said, calling them "war crimes" -- although no claim by either side in this civil war can easily be verified.
Rebels said they shot down a Syrian fighter jet in the northwestern province of Idlib near the Turkish border, Reuters reported.

After months of protests and violent crackdowns, a look back at the violence that has overtaken the country.
The Syrian Martyrs Brigade claimed in a statement the plane was brought down near the town of al-Thayabiya. Video footage on al-Arabiya television showed what appeared to be smoke in the sky and a person parachuting down. An army helicopter hovered over the area, apparently in search of the pilot.
There were no major announcements in Assad's interview; perhaps the boldest declaration he made was that he was still in the capital, Damascus, speaking to the Syrian people from the presidential palace.
This undoubtedly was to quash rumors that he had fled the capital in recent weeks as the fighting there intensified and rebels brazenly killed senior members of his regime.

And yet despite high-level assassinations, territorial gains made by rebels, increasing international isolation, sanctions and condemnation of his regime, Assad seemed optimistic.
"We are fighting a regional and global war, so time is needed to win it," he said. "I can summarize and say that we are moving forward. The situation on the ground is better, but there is no conclusion and this requires some time."
Time may not be on the president's side. Seventeen months after street protests morphed into a full-scale rebellion against his rule, his use of superior military power has done little stop calls for his removal from power.
This is how Assad described the conflict: "This issue is a battle of wills in the first place. They have the will to destroy the country; they started in Deraa, then moved to Homs, then Damascus, then Halab, to Deraa to Latakia. They're trying to move from one location to the other."

From the villages to towns and now to the country’s largest two cities of Aleppo and Damascus, the fight for Syria has left no corner untouched. Rebels have managed to make in-roads into these areas, at times seizing control of them.
Opposition activists claim unverified footage shows the aftermath of a brutal massacre of Syrian rebels in Daraa. Meanwhile, pro-regime TV says forces were eradicating the city of terrorists. Ayman Mohyeldin reports from Cairo, Egypt.
Assad dismissed such setbacks, saying, "When the army enters a certain place, it means they are capable of taking it. They [the rebels] believed many of these neighborhoods were out of the government's influence. But the army easily entered most of these neighborhoods.The opposition could not control these neighborhoods.”
Assad saved his harshest criticism for those behind what he labeled as regional interference in his country, particularly one-time ally Turkey. "The Turkish position is well known. I hold the Turkish government accountable for all of the bloodshed in Syria,” he said.

In recent weeks, Turkey, France, opposition leaders and rebels inside Syria have floated the idea of a no-fly zone or a buffer zone over the northern part of the country to help shield civilians escaping the fighting.
But such a measure would require significant military commitments from foreign powers, something Assad dismissed, “I believe that firstly, a no-fly zone is not going to work practically and secondly, the countries that are pressing for it, or the enemy countries, know that it is unrealistic to achieve."
Perhaps the one thing Assad and Syria’s opposition both agree on is that Syria’s war has become a battle of wills. And neither side has shown a willingness to back down anytime soon.

This was already the case, as far as them hating us. This does not seem to stop us from helping those in need. Russia and China are the roadblocks to the rebels help. Most Americans are war weary and do not wished to get involved. I look at it this way, would these same citizens we save help us if we were getting beat down? I think not, I think they would celebrate it. None the less, we will help if we are given opportunity to arm them, give them sat intel, which helped other "uprisings" gain victory.

Remember this is the same country that was trying to build a nuclear facility, which was destroyed by Israel a few years back. The difference here is that we are not liked by both the people of Syria, and the government, not just one or the other, of course at the moment "a friend in need is a friend indeed" in this case you can change the first part to "a enemy".
Assad will eventually have to relent or keep his heavy hand on the people forever. The problem for Assad is that his country will not live in peace until certain rights are granted or he steps down, or is killed. Assad is probably just passed the point of no return, to not have his life in jeopardy as long as he is in power or in the country, ie there will be no truce, only a winner or a loser.
Like I said earlier the Syrians would not come to our aid if we were being beat down. They might even celebrate it. We are in a constant catch 22 when it comes to helping "the people" of the ME, that have called for our death for quite sometime.

This conflict in Syria, the same repeated in Iraq and other Arab nations, is rooted in the power-dynamic conflicts that began in the 7th century - Not too many people who think that they have something to say on the matters of conflict in the Middle East, have a clue about the causes! Taken together with the Palestinian/Israeli conflict, the ongoing unrest/violence in the Middle East, that has spilled over into other places, is too complex for most on this posting to explain!

It seems that our politicians cannot keep their heads out of their a-s long enough to see the sun shine. All one needs to do is to look ate country's where we have interfered with the politics of a country and then literally set up the people for a takeover by the very people we wanted to keep out. Iraq is a good example as was Iran. We refuse to see what the true problem is and that is that we have not considered banning Islam as a violent cult, not a religion. If the AAmerican Christians were executing people in the streets, here or around the world, I feel that The AAmerican Christians would be making strong efforts to police them as their faith would dictate.
But perhaps I am wrong. After all if the Christians were going on the Internet and executing their own believers, wouldn't the message be that "We can get you anywhere, anytime?"
Syria is a government tolerant to Christians and there are Christians that are dying and will surely die if the Muslims come to power as in Iran. People are preparing for Armageddon because they are apparently more able to see the "Writing on the wall." The Jewish people are not the same people that once sought to dominate the world through conquest, The same is true for the Romans and Christians, but the Muslims are wanting a rematch and this time they are going to have Nukes, Biological and Chemical Warfare in their bags that will fit very well with their propensity to commit Suicide in the Name of Allah.
The prophesies of Famine, disease, wars, and pestilences is just another day for the Muslims, because a basic premise of their faith is Predestined. If it is written, it will happen. Since they choose to adhere to writings and prophesy dated from three thousand years ago, we will surely see it come to pass unless it is checked now. The west will not dare to put a no-fly zone over Syria unless they can get Israel to involve. The cost is too high!!! I think it will take over 10 billion dollars plus hundreds of NATO deaths to disable Assad airforce and air defense.
If Assad willing to use his bio/chemical weapons the death will be in millions/billions around the world. There is no defense against a good bio weapon except vaccination because there is no portable air filter for virus. A modified swine flu or even the H5N1 chicken flu that can attack all human are good choice. The CDC probably has some variation of these virusses in its lab.
The poor treatment that Mubarak got forcing Quadafy and Assad to harden their positions. Lybia rebel was lucky that they have oil to lure the west in. Assad will win and Syria rebel will find a better life as refugee in the US!!!
I'd rather know how Main Street Citizens, the Middle Classes, are reacting to the devastating 'austerity' policies being forced upon them in England, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Greece, and Portugal.
Media coverage of how those Citizens are trying to defend themselves may prove beneficial and informative to the Main Street people of America.
Geo-politics, Imperialism, Globalization, and other self-serving interests of corrupt Regimes is of no concern to those of Main Street.
