Girl accused of blasphemy in Pakistan may have been framed by Muslim cleric

Pakistani Christian minority members carry placards for the release of a Christian girl, Rimsha Masih -- arrested on charges of blasphemy -- during a protest in Faisalabad, Pakistan, Monday.

Rimsha Masih, the Christian Pakistani girl accused of blasphemy for burning holy Muslim texts may have been framed by a local Muslim cleric who was among the first to accuse her of the crime, police officials said on Sunday.

Khalid Jadoon was arrested after witnesses from Masih's village, on the outskirts of the country’s capital, complained about his alleged actions.

The cleric appeared briefly in court on Sunday before he was sent to jail for a 14-day judicial remand.

Religious and secular groups worldwide have protested over the detention in August of Rimsha Masih, accused by Muslim neighbors of burning Islamic religious texts.

Pakistani Christians live in fear after girl's blasphemy arrest

A local man, Hafiz Zubair, came forward to offer testimony in which he claims to have seen Jadoon fabricating evidence by mixing holy text pages with ashes.

Speaking to a local news channel, Zubair said: "I asked Jadoon why he was fabricating the evidence. He said that this would ensure a strong case against the girl and would ultimately help them in evicting the Christians from the locality."

Police official Munir Hussain Jafri told Reuters: "Witnesses complained that he had torn pages from a Koran and placed them in her bag which had burned papers."

Life for All Pakistan, one of the campaign groups working to secure Rimsha's release, issued a statement in response to the latest twist in the story, saying: “This is a national issue and everyone who claims to be secular and liberal should raise their voice.”

A bail hearing will be held on Monday for Masih, whose case has re-focused a spotlight on Pakistan's anti-blasphemy law.

Under the law, anyone who speaks ill of Islam and the Prophet Mohammad commits a crime and faces the death penalty.

Activists and human rights groups say vague terminology has led to its misuse, and that the law dangerously discriminates against the Muslim country's tiny minority groups.

Critics of Pakistan's leaders say they are too worried about an extremist backlash to speak out against the law in a nation where religious conservatism is increasingly prevalent.

Convictions are common, although the death sentence has never been carried out. Most convictions are thrown out on appeal, but mobs have killed many people accused of blasphemy.

There have been conflicting reports about Masih's age and her mental state. Some media have said she is 11 and suffers from Down's Syndrome.

A hospital said in a report she was about 14 but had the mental capacities of someone younger, and was uneducated.

Masih's arrest triggered an exodus of several hundred Christians from her poor village after mosques reported over their loudspeakers what the girl was alleged to have done.

Christians, who make up four percent of Pakistan's population of 180 million, have been especially concerned about the blasphemy law, saying it offers them no protection.

Convictions hinge on witness testimony and are often linked to vendettas, they complain.

In 2009, 40 houses and a church were set ablaze by a mob of 1,000 Muslims in the town of Gojra, in Punjab province. At least seven Christians were burned to death. The attacks were triggered by reports of the desecration of the Koran.

Two Christian brothers accused of writing a blasphemous letter against the Prophet Mohammad were gunned down outside a court in the eastern city of Faisalabad in July of 2010.

it pains me to see people behaving like animals, with no regard for human life.

religion is the single most distructive force on planet earth. man has done soo much evil in the name of God and religion and the muslims are just carring on that tradition. you need to forget religion and live a life that will be pleasing to whatever gods you beliving in. those extremist muslims though are disgusting beings who are worst than animals.

Makes me wonder how many other innocent Muslims have been ordered punished or executed by some cleric who felt a need to make a point or just woke on the wrong side of the bed in a bad mood.

If we don't deal with Islam now, we will be ruled by them in less than fifty years. Is that what the American people want, to be ruled by a repressive, savage and subverted religion?

Perhaps our great King Obamao can head over to Pakistan to help with the execution?

This is why there should always be a seperation of chruch and state. People say all the time, but we are this and why can we not have that. That is the issue, we are not all Christian, Muslim, Buddist, Agnostic (Those that believe in higher power, but not in the ways as taught or written by man) The last we can see why they believe in such a way. Here is someones beautiful 14 year old girl, that for reason on the Muslim Cleric knows has chosen to attack for his religous beliefs. Another thing we should all remember in all states, their is a mix. We should be glad if we live in a country that has seperation of church and state, yet I hear aweful things at times on what people think we should do to others. I have seen some in the comments her, also comments to the evil of those people and such. Someone should take the time to read the Bible, Old testment, then Koran, and Tora (Excuse me for misspelling)Trust me they are based from same seed, they differ in how they grow. But just look at the Christain seed, look at all the different branches some close other so different you wonder where they got that. In the end, what a person believes how they talk to their god, is up to them. The quicker man learns to look at things like this, then just maybe no one will have power over them to do things they find offensive. That is why they burn a holy book, a church, a bible I could go on. It is because those material things have power to enrage and cause hate.

What is it with these people, are they just insane?! How can the rest of the world deal with such lunatics on any kind of rational basis?

They may hold the trophy for insanity disguised as religion BUT the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of England were the trophy holders for a century or more. I don't either of these religions has a clue about God and I truly believe God wants nothing to do with either of them.

I had a conversation with God again after I left him a Voicemail on his Cell Phone. We met and he told me that he is tired of all these people making all these fake stories and books that are only used to oppress people. He told me to kill all religious groups because they are a threat. Oh, and he said to make sure as I'm destroying all these nations to say, " I do this in the name of my God".

Since Christian men of the cloth read and interpret (tell us what they want us to hear) the Bible AND Islamic men of the cloth read and interpret (tell their people what they want them to hear) the Koran, I truly believe it is blasphmeous to tell on a man of the Islamic cloth who is fabricating evidence in order to convict a non believer of a crime. In short, a man who lies, cheats, or steals to keep Islam from impurity is pure? Can I sell you the brooklyn bridge? Wake up and smell the coffee people. Organized religion is either going to get us into major wars, keep us in chains, or cause more misery than you ever thought was possible.

Once again a fine example of "Islam, a religion of peace". Where are the American Feminists?!?!. Why aren't they condemning the most oppressive religion in the world towards women?!?!.......Crickets sounds........Feminists have no credibility until they start condemning this kind of activity in Islam in mass.

So are they going to stone this cleric to death as the Koran dictates for those that bear false witness or does that only mean for those that bear false witness against another Muslim. If this cleric tore pages from the Koran then he is guilty of blasphemy and should be put to death under his own vile law. Quite frankly I am growing weary of Muslims and their sick laws and think we should just eradicate the vermin.

And yet we're supposed to believe all Muslims are a peaceful people. Riiight.

I'd like to see the people in America who loudly support freedom of religion for Muslims in this country, but just as loudly denounce Christianity at every opportunity - I'd like to see those people go live for a year in Pakistan, Afghanistan, or the mid-east... and if they manage to stay out of jail &/or live through the experience, I'd like to hear their opinions once they got back. Then again, they'd probably just say that the people are backwards and don't know what they're doing. "Backwards"? Maybe. "Don't know what they're doing"? I'll say it again... riiight!

I think many Americans dislike Christianity because it has this habit of telling you "no". It's like a great big parental authority, the way parenting used to be, anyway - and in our current society, no on ever wants to be told no about anything. Well, Christianity has nothing on Islam when it comes to saying "no", and the earthly punishment for ignoring a "no" commandment in Islam is just a wee bit worse. Oh, and as with the case in the article, the truth may have nothing to do with what "no" you're accused of breaking. In their culture, the authorities are always right, and speaking of "right", or more specifically, "rights"... you have none.

For destroying the holy book the Iman should be punished severely by Islamic law.

And didn't you know President Obama is really a space alien who wants increase the tax on ammunition by 20,000% so we won't be able to defend ourselves against them. I would think that the cleric, by tearing pages from a Muslim holy book and further defiling them by mixing them with ashes, would also be committing an act of blasphemy, and should face the same punishment. Of course that won't happen, because a Muslim would never commit an act of blasphemy; only non-Islamic infidels would do that.

I'd have thought by now we, collectively as humans, have learned a few more things about religious teachings.

The stricter the observance of a religion's teachings by its followers, the less progressive changes they are prepared to think for themselves in terms of validity and reasoning. Cases in point: No eating by left hand (due to health risk from cleaning oneself after one's 'toilet' business in the desert); No eating pork by the Jewish people (due to lack of precious water in the desert to cook it properly). Likewise, no eating meat on certain days by some Christians (meat was expensive and served as a dish at festivals at one time by early Christians when grazing animals for food was outside their society's practice).

And to lock in followers' mindset firmly inside the dogma, a terrible eternal punishment is presented as outcome of failure to observe the rule. Scary stuff. And for those who think oudated and weird things only are observed by followers of Islam, you have terribly failed your history lessons. Ignorance would be an understatement in your case. For example, the Jews have a ceremony called Kaparot in whick a live chicken is swirled around a sinner's head three times so all his sins are cleansed. Kinda get out of jail card. Meanwhile, the chicken absorbs all the sins transferred to it by the sinner. So neat, huh?

It goes without saying that without many schism of the Roman Catholic Church, it's unlikely the Puritans would have come to the America continent as a distinct religious group escaping persecution in the first place. The influence of their belief and practice has been the continuing and fundamental belief in a mighty God today in the US, although one can say it has less and less to do with the Puritans' origial practices. Invariably, followers of these new churces think Jesus is more comfortable with their mega church buildings and lots of money. Jesus would have to learn how to present himself on stage with microphone if he has any chance of converting the unbelievers. No need for the five load and two fish miracle with so many eateries nearby.

'With or without religion, good people can behave well and bad people can do evil; but for good people to do evil — that takes religion.' Steve Weinberg, US Physics Nobel Laureate.

So, what are they going to do with this Cleric who tore the pages and tossed them among the ashes?

These people are hypocrites, using their lame excuse for spirituality to raise money with drugs and other crimes to fight their "holy" wars and incite violence, excuses to torture, rape and kill women and kill other men.

Terrorists in every sense of the word, the scourge of the earth. They give God and Allah a bad name.

There should not any tolerance for any one to use a little girl to advance their cause- The person should be cut up- shot, & burn.

We have too many people in this world that lie and set up people to look bad- Time to put a stop to all of this.

religion has gotten out of hand! We have had too many wars and killings because of religion, time to stop!

Isn't religion always teaching us to love one another? to respect one another? to help one another? why then is there so much HATE????

Each person should believe in their God and let it be!
