A Free Syrian Army fighter takes up position to fire a rocket-propelled grenade in Aleppo on Sunday.
AMMAN - Syrian rebels said they planted bombs inside the Syrian army's General Staff headquarters in central Damascus on Sunday as President Bashar al-Assad's forces bulldozed buildings to the ground in parts of the capital that have backed the uprising.
Syrian state television said four people were wounded in what it called a terrorist attack on the General Staff compound in the highly guarded Abu Rummaneh district, where another bomb attack killed four of Assad's top lieutenants two months ago.
Syrian rebels say they hit Assad’s air power
As the rebels demonstrated they could strike at the heart of the security apparatus, residents said army bulldozers moved on neighborhoods to the west, destroying at least 20 buildings in the Sunni Muslim areas that have sheltered the insurgents.
In the eastern Damascus neighborhood of Hazza, footage taken by activists on Sunday showed several buildings on fire. Opposition sources said the army had earlier stormed the area and executed 27 young men.

An image from a video provided by the Shaam News network on Sunday shows a plume of smoke rising up after a shelling in the embattled city of Homs, Syria. Government forces shelled parts of northern Syria to target rebel strongholds.
"Any youth of fighting age seems to have been captured and killed," said activist Obadah al-Haj, who had fled the area.
Activist video footage from the area showed a young man lying dead beside a yellow taxi, shot in the face. Another dead youth was in the driver seat, blood covering his head and chest.
Assad belongs to the minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam that has dominated power since members of the sect led a military coup in 1963. Assad's father took power in 1970.
Loyalist forces killed at least 25 men on Sunday when they shelled and stormed al-Fan, a Sunni village in the province of Hama, opposition campaigners said.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights said most of the men appear to have been killed by shelling, but an unspecified number were executed when troops stormed the village later. The official state news agency said a military operation on Fan targeted "terrorists who were scaring citizens."
Assad stays cool amid reported slaughter on the bread lines
Video footage from Fan taken by activists showed women and family members crying over bodies wrapped in white sheets and placed in a row on the floor of a mosque.
As the uprising in Syria has spread over the last 18 months, it has taken on a more sectarian bent, with activists saying Assad's best trained forces are spearheading the fight in the capital.
Assad, who is backed by Shi'ite Iran and its Hezbollah Lebanese proxy, has lost control of rural areas in northern, eastern and southern regions and has used helicopter gunships and fighter jets to try to subdue the opposition.
But the aerial bombardment has driven fresh waves of refugees into neighboring countries, reviving Turkish calls for "safe zones" to be set up on Syrian territory.
With Russia and China blocking action by the U.N. Security Council however and little appetite among Western states, or Turkey itself, for committing troops to secure such zones, there is scant chance they will be set up any time soon.
In the U.S., Syria has occasionally popped up in presidential campaign rhetoric. Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney told CBS News that he would send U.S. troops to Syria if needed to prevent the spread of chemical weapons.
“Clearly the concern would be that some terrorist group, whether Hamas, Hezbollah, al-Qaida or others would receive the capacity to carry out a mass destruction, mass death type of event,” Romney said. “And therefore America has to be ready whether it’s there or anywhere else in the world.”
On Sunday, Vice President Joe Biden said Romney is “ready to go to war in Syria and Iran.”
Biden did not use similar language on Syria at a later campaign stop.

Excellent, Assad's forces carry out totalitarian policies like random execution. I think Assad and his family will come to a bad end, deservedly so.
Notice how quiet the Obama administration has been ?
Haven't heard a peep since there were reports of "arming" the rebels:
It must be Presidential election time and Mr. Obama doesn't want his "voter base" to know what he is doing.
Yep, the Syrian conflict is really going to turn out well.....either Assad stays in power or the rebels take over and install ANOTHER Muslim Brotherhood government based upon Sharia Law.
Wait a minute.....what about the Secretary of State's Chief of Staff ? Oh yeah, something about the Muslim Brotherhood and al-Qaida connection:
And folks are actually thinking she would be a good Progressive candidate for President in 2016. LOL.
So, guess we now know why Mr. Obama is supporting rebels in the Middle East's "Arab Spring-Fall-Winter-Summer".
Good points ldo or ido(I'm sorry) but any president no matter republican or democrat is going be realistic going in and that may never change until everyone is feeling it.
Ido,
Actually, I quite clearly remember President Obama and Secretary Clinton publicly stating that any attempts to move or use chemical weapons by the Assad regime would be a "red line" of which crossing would change the US's current strategy and would force it to reconsider it's involvement. I also believe that statement was echoed by the UK PM as well. Fortunately, when it comes to chemical weapons, its as dangerous for Assad to mobilize them as it is for those that fear he would mobilize them against the rebels.

As for the slandering of Clinton's muslim aide and the accusation that she was somehow connected to the Muslim Brotherhood, it's completely false on every level. You may wanna pull your head out of your ass Ido. First of all, that claim was made by none other than Michelle Bachmann, the genius on the house intelligence committee. Not sure which is more ironic: her being on the committee or that the house has an intelligence committee to begin with, but her membership gives an idea of how credible it is. Go ahead Ido, stake your reputation on the factual ineptitude of congressional members like Bat$%it Crazy Bachmann, or some second rate conservative hack website's report, but you may want to be careful not to look like a complete idiot in the process. How do I know you're an idiot for posting this? John McCain was the one to refute the claim and vouch for Clinton's aide on the house floor. I'm not a supporter of most republicans, but I've always given McCain credit for standing up against blatant bigotry and calling the tea tards on their BS. BTW, one of the people that she was apparently in contact with inside the brotherhood has been dead for over a decade. Do you have an article proving that she can use the spirits of the dead to carry out her terrorist plot? If not, please get back on the short bus and try not to make too much noise about nothing, it upsets the other tea tards.
I guess you did not notice when we did the same in Iraq and Afghanistan--but now I guess that is turning into just a drone killing field, with no responsibility--AND causing the USA having to watch our backs on the entire globe, since everyone thinks we are not to be trusted about anything, especially the killing of thousands of random standing people and children, even in countries we promised to help destroy dictators!---let us start at home shall we?
sleuth
it does get rather pathetic how far tea tards and idiots like ido and bachmann go just to do whatever the @!$%# they think benefits them by doing such stupid @!$%# cause i honestly can't figure out how they can constantly lie and ruin peoples lives and reputation and live with themselves. also that whole chicken pox or flu shot thing were bachmann made up some bull@!$%# story were the shot causes retardation even though the CDC and pretty much every study out there (and common sense) proved otherwise but since she is a politician people are dumb enough to believe her over scientists and doctors so they refused to give their children the shot and put their children's health at risk because bachmann had to scare people with her wild crazy bull@!$%# again. anyway the whole Muslim assistant thing was months ago and these idiots are still whining about it.
seriously ido you get your sources from Bachmann and actually believe all her bull@!$%# are you @!$%#ing kiding me? Missouri please throw that crazy bitch out the house please! i mean at first all he bumbling bull@!$%# and stupidity was kind of funny but now she's just gone all McCarthy on everybodys asses.
Ido
That thought has become prominent in many minds. Obama saluted the "Arab Spring" which seems only to have spread muslim extremist power in the middle east. Only Russia and China have stood between the UN and our being into another war. Putin said of Obama "He is either an idiot or he is purposely trying to ruin his economy on purpose." Russia and China have thier own internal battle against muslim extremeists and if Syria is taken over by the rebels it will be another case of the Muslim Brotherhood taking over. The one now in power in Egypt is making nice nice with Iran. The irony of this whole last four years is that we may end up needing China and Russia to help us with an all out war for our very survival as the unwanted who are not muslim. If articles like the one featured on MSN bringing up unions power and blacks together manage to influence some voters and we get another Obama win, I wonder if it could be the fate we are doomed to see without a shot being fired on our side and no help from outside? If by the fortunate intervention of God we manage to turn things around, we may yet have to face down what has been built up in the last four years.
And what it all boils down to is that the people on the street (or, in this case, online) have no concept of the intricacies of government and maintaining as peaceable relations with other nations as possible. It is not as simple as "One from column 'A' and two from column 'B'". There is a very delicate 'dance' necessary so as not to further alienate foreign governments, especially one as volatile as Syria.
ldo, please be aware that one nation cannot unilaterally establish a militant posture against any other nation without dire consequences for that nation. The United States is not in a position to wage war, as a singular entity, against Syria, much as the powers of government may wish to do so. Bush was no more individually responsible for the wars on his watch as Obama is now. Bush first had to convince the UN that there was clear and present danger in allowing Iraq to go unchecked. In that case, it was fairly easy to do. He was, in fact, perpetuating Daddy's War and it was easy enough for the UN to back military invasion of Iraq. (the absence of WMDs notwithstanding.)
In Obama's case, it is not quite so simple. For the most part, the UN member nations, understanding the ramifications of such action as going in with military force into another nation, have, so far, chosen to view this as a civil war, which it is, and prefer to stand back and watch the butcher slaughter his own people for the sake of power. They sadly understand that military action against another government is in violation of the UN charter. Though I do not doubt they are collectively waiting for their collectively established 'red line' to pull another SEAL Team 6 type undercover military action to go in and put an end to the maniacal, wholesale slaughter of the people.
Though, for the life of me, I cannot understand why it is taking so long. For too long, the madman in power has been gunning down his own people, blowing up their homes as they lie asleep at night. If some action is not taken soon, he will be left to 'govern' the dirt. But, as I said at the start, this is not a decision that can be made by the United States alone. As a charter member as well as one of the governing bodies of the United Nations, the US must abide the rules of the UN Charter.
It's not easy, but it's necessary. And, for those of you who are unable to comprehend the delicate balance any nation must maintain in such a situation , you are probably better off to read more and rant less.
And, Shakingmyhead @#1.6: "Putin said of Obama "He is either an idiot or he is purposely trying to ruin his economy on purpose."
Putin actually said that? No wonder the people of Russia no longer have faith in him. He has become an illiterate idiot. (Or were you merely paraphrasing?)
What you need to research is the truth of the matter. The "rebels" are mostly al-qaeda backed by the muslime brotherhood. They are trying to overthrow another country. In case you didn't realize it every country Obama has helped over throw is now controlled of the muslime brotherhood and al-qaeda. Syria is the next country they are taking over for islam.
Please, no American intervention. We don't need to be in more wars.
Soldiers make bad cops.
Tooooo late.....Mr. Obama and his administration is/has been providing support to the Syrian rebels (see my post above).
Proof that our troops are on the ground in Syria please Ido.
Just because troops are not on the ground doesn't mean we are not supporting them, I'm pretty sure we are sending food, medical supplies and I am not entirely sure on weapons but it wouldn't surprise me if we are smuggling in small arms.
The CIA is already in Turkey actively supporting the rebels. You actually think they are only involved in what we are being told by the Government? Our involvement in Vietnam started with "CIA observers".

A week ago or so MSN had a live chat with Richard Engel. I personally asked him if he has seen any signs of CIA or American help and his answer was none what so ever. He said he hasnt even seen any of those radios they supposedly were handing out.
jarrod-990613, Richard Engel will say whatever the State Department wants him to say (as will any other employee of the mainstream media). Engel has spent many months living amongst Muslim Brotherhood families in Egypt. Why? As one of our more recognizable propagandists, I guess he has to develop a certain rapport with the foot soldiers of NATO's latest Middle Eastern proxy.
This has been the MOST one side news media coverage EVER !!!! All the media is pro-terrorist like the nato baby killers ! Assad was way too nice in the beginning ! He is going to have to kill all enemies ! Turkey is giving all the support and base for these alQaida sub-humans. Bomb Turkey ! Let the rest of the low life countries try and invade Syria, and Russia, China, Greece, Serbia, Armenia will help defend her from the Muslim killers !
You do realize that the fighters on both sides are mostly Muslim, don't you?
Even so both sides hate each other, but i bet a lot of Shias are just oppressed to the point that they probably support the Sunnis one way or the next. Although i could be horrible wrong as if the rebels do win, the Shias might be exiled from Syria or worse some form of Genocide for supporting Assad.
They seriously need to find and snipe the life out of this murderer Assad.. Notice a lot of these dictators have ass in their name... it fits..
Perhaps that loser John Sidney McCain and his toady Lindsey Graham should go to Syria and help the terrorists there as they did in Libya. We all know McCain, that noted loser, was in Libya more often than our drones.
Of course McCain is a big time war monger and he loves it when American men and women are dying on foreign soil for some indefinite cause. He sticks his face in front of any camera and emotes how he would handle the matter. Who cares what this dinosaur thinks ?
He pretends to be a moderate, a maverick and a Republican. He is first a liar, then a loser then a loose cannon and finally a fool who believes we believe anything he says.
His true story of Viet Nam will come out when this crude individual can no longer block the POW info releases and stories from Viet Nam as he has done for all these years to ensure his 'hero' label sticks with him.
The truth will reveal he was a turn coat, a liar and a coward when in Viet Nam prisons. Thus he assured his comforts against all odds.
He is a poster boy for TERM LIMITS, financial reports, drug tests and above all an IQ test.
If we had IQ tests we would not have McCain, Graham. Sheila Jackson Lee, Hank Johnson. Maxine Waters and Debbie Wasserman anywhere near the levers of government.
And this Nation would prosper greatly without AFFIRMATIVE ACTION in place. It must be dumped NOW !
Josh: Tell us how you really feel.
Josh, Put the Wiskey down and get a grip.
I could argue these points, but with your extreme paranoia, it would be the same as talking to a potato. So do us all a favor and go back to your corner, face the wall, and stay there. The only loser I see here isn't John McCain, it's you.
What is most unfortunate is that an IQ test is not required to post here. But it is not required, so we have to suffer through such obviously uneducated delusional drivel as what you have posted here.
Hummmmmmmmmmm .... The Rebels are bombing the general staff compound building in Damascus? .. NOT Good for Assad! .... High ranking military officials in every army, like to feel safe & inviolate, they aren't used to being targets .. If Assad can't control Damascus ... hes in deep @!$%#!
Just think .... His economic base is crumbling ... He hasn't been able to collect taxes in almost a year ... his infrastructure cost a lot to run ... and no money coming in ... from his last photo/ interview he looked a bit disheveled.... he's not sleeping well with good reason .... he knows that a lot of people would do him in a NY minute ... hes gotta be very nervous ..
Assad is receiving plenty of money from Iran, Hezbollah, Russia, and China, to keep his military machine operating. Even if the actual damage or casualties are limited, an attack on his military headquarters in the heart of the capital is a major psychological blow that undermines his propaganda efforts and credibility just like the attack on the US embassy in Saigon during the Vietnam War. The Tet Offensive was a complete failure from a military standpoint but very successful in eroding the credibility of the US and its South Vietnamese proxy among the Vietnamese people and other people in the region such as in Cambodia.
The US and other western allies are hoping that this blow will demoralize the Syrian army and its command structure to cause desertion and overall confusion. They are also hoping that this will encourage civilians waiting on the sidelines to join the rebellion which had been losing the initiative in its campaign to overthrow Assad's regime.
Remember when we backed the rebel fighters in Afghanistan fight the Soviet Union? Those rebels were Al-Qaida and the Taliban, the same groups backing the Syria Freedom Fighters. John Mcain and Condie Rice want us to give them weapons to fight Assad. We made that mistake once lets just let them kick each others a**.
John Mcain killed more US Navy sailors than he did North Viet Nam pilots. Mcains father and now John is still blocking the facts from coming out.
Are you and Josh Brogan related in any way?
Nope, not related to Josh. I'm just a Navy vet who knows the truth about John McCain. I know Johns "Reckless" actions in the cockpit on the flight deck, he did a wet start and "cooked off a warhead" on the fighter jet behind him. This set off one explosion after another and killed 20 some sailors in the process. Johns father a 4-star Admiral covered up the story and had the flight deck film destroyed. John was the first person transferred off the USS Forestall while the fires were still burning.
Too bad no president we are getting has the guts to go in now, i wanted to say something a bit rude but it would have better describe this circumstance for the Arab Spring that's trying to continue. Only much later when the rebels have much more ground and backing will anyone in the U.S even give a chance of going in, almost like in Libya or Egypt.
How much more leaked information has to surface before anyone goes to help them?
Divine: You can go help. Choosing to help a brutal dictator or terrorists isn't a choice. Let them fight it out.
I say LET ISLAM kill each other, this can only benefit humanity!!!
Romney said he'll fight Al-Queda? Does that mean he'll support Assad?
Dictators suck, but you know what? They keep order. Soon the entire Arab world will be comprised of unstable countries with warring factions-which keeps them too weak to fight Israel the next time it wants to expand its borders.
I disagree, dictators don't keep order, its more of masquerade order, they hide everything, keep those who are speaking quite with secret police and violence. Meanwhile its only order if you are with them. If you keep oppressing people and taking away liberties that all humans get you are not going to living a very safe and risk free life, i bet any dictator today never sleeps.
I think the killing or overthrowing of these dictator if done right will start a more democratic society and will finally open the middle east too their enlightenment. Of course nothing is stopping someone like a general in Syria from taking the country and overthrowing Assad, as done in the past so many times, unless some form of foreign intervention.
I thought this is suppose to be unarmed peaceful protesters!!! otherwise they're as evil as the Syria's army!!! so if they got killed, they deserved it!!!
You been in the dark lately, it started as that but that was awhile ago. For a little bit the rebel die down a bit but went into full reverse after the Syrian Army continue to mortar fire on innocent civilians for no reason, since most of rebels were standing down getting ready for the vote for more civil rights and a change in their constitution. Only turn out to be a complete lie and Assad continues to order his army around killing anyone even remotely near rebels.
They don't deserve to die, Assad deserves to die, he is a lying, scheming bastard, who only cares about his control of Syria and his minority Shias.
It reads like the rebels attacks are working and are good and they will win. I don't know but maybe they will be a country in the right direction then one that will go a worser way. I don't hear yet because of the threat, what type of government Syria will have but it will probably be a better one. To think that there president would stay in power and fight his own people to the point of them fighting back as rebels and winning is stupid. I feel bad for Assad though because he most likely could not of run or left and is trapped in Syria and his life and his families lives are on the line and were the whole time. It is sad and Syria should look for a government of when a want of a change in government is happening, that it can be done without the president needing to fight to his death for the change to happen. That in of it’s self, will be a big change for this country.
if mitt wants to fight let him go over there and lead the way with his kids lol no more boys from the great USA need to fight for these rag heads
The so called by your media Rebels are actually bandits and headcutters .... as usa and westen countries paid them for.
I already can imagine what kind of new Government that could be if they emplace bombs, act like talibans in Afghanistan and promising to shut down civilian flights already ...
Something similar to usa government, probably, where money and resources rules.. not actually so called democracy and human rights.
Yes. They are probably much to the likes of The Northern Alliance in Afghanistan who were all the poppy growers and arms dealers who still presented a resistance to the Taliban. Just your typical 'Freedom Fighters.'
See the Title Picture to this article - purely taliban and terrorist, sitting in a home and shooting to people, in hidden ...
that is whom usa supposedly fighting in Afg and Iraq... but here in Syria they support same sort of talibans and headcutters who just feel some opportunity to get a power and do some funny killing jobs around ... For the money usa and western pay them.
It is sad how double standard western and usa games are in the politics and absolutely careless for the humans in that poor Country :-(
Awesome. Romney, like Bush, will take us into not ONE, but TWO wars if elected.....deja vu anyone?
Where exactly did you get the disinformation to come up with that bit of fiction ?
Syria is not America's war... Be worried about people calling for more Americans to war.
Just thank god a democrat is president and if Romney wins pray this is over before he's inaugurated. Otherwise it may be world war 3.
Yeah Larry Go ahead and vote for Obama. He wants the USA to be "Muslem" anyway. We will be seeing this kind of fighting here..Not in some far away land. Don't have to worry about a ww it will be a Muslem takes all. And guess what, they will win Obama thinks nothing of printing more money as needed.
Besides In the last century, Democrats were at the helm for nearly every war, the
exceptions being the Spanish American War and the Gulf War. WWI, WWII, Korea,
Viet Nam, Bosnia ... all Dem. Bush gets credit for one or two, depending on
whether you lump Afghanistan and Iraq under the War on Terrorism or declare them
independent actions
And you blame the war for Independence on whom?In one sentence you saw the Dems were at the helm with the exceptions of every war. So what your saying here is the Republicans started it and the Democrats Finished it. than in your last sentence you step on yourself. You seam to made up such a line of Crap that your not sure if you believe it your self. I guess what your saying here is Hindenburg, Hitler and Ho Chi Min said the Democrats are in office Let's incite America. Bin Laden said Said Bush is in office let's see waht we can do to really piss off the Americans. Bosnia is something else all togather, read a little history here. you'll see that we should have went there a year sooner but where a little tied up. If your going to drag the Spanish American War into the mix why not drag the Civil War in also.
I don't think or believe that when someone wants to pick a fight with us that they give a Rats Ass about who's in office. You never lived thru the time of the threat of Communisum and the Free World and have no idea what fears people were going thru. You have had everything given to you by my generation and it's time you stood up to be counted but you won't. Personally I'm getting to old and your turn and YOU are failing your Grandparents, parents, brothers and sisters, and your country. Worst yet yourself.
You'd better enjoy what you have because if Romney gets in it'll all be gone. Than what ya gonna do? you'll sit there and take it because you won't stand up for your rights.
6dogs, you need to get a grip. So tell me, if Romney is elected, how is he going to take away our rights? With no constraints on a second term, and a Democratic Senate, I'm a lot more afraid of what Obama will do if he is re-elected. Your remark about Republicans starting wars and the Democrats finishing them, is just plain stupid. WWI, Wilson, Democrat both start and finish; WWII, both Democrats, Roosevelt and Truman, both start and finish; Korea, Truman start, Eisenhower, a Republican finish; Viet Nam, Kennedy and Johnson, both Dems. start, Nixon, Rep. stop.; Desert Storm, George H W Bush; Bosnia, Clinton; War on Terror, Clinton, Bush Jr, Obama, and who knows when it will end. This doesn't mean the Dems. started the wars, and the Reps. finished them. It only means which party occupied the White House when hostilities began, and who was there when it stopped.
Your remark about other countries not giving a rats ass about who occupies the White House if they start trouble is also wrong. Go talk to some of the Iranian hostages. The U.S. Embassy in Tehran was was overrun in November, of 1979, when Jimmy Carter was President. He wrestled with this problem for the rest of his term. Ronald Reagan was elected President in 1980. Right after his inauguration, the hostages were freed. Iran had struggled for over a year about what to do with the hostages. Reagan comes to power, and they are released the same day. And it's generally recognized that Reagan, more than anyone else, put a end to the Cold War, and the demise of Communism in Russia, and the other Eastern block nations.
I don't know where you live, and I don't want to know, but I have lived through the Cold War, the nuclear attack safety drills, the assassination of JFK, and all the turmoil of the '60's. My parents taught me that if I wanted something, I worked for it. And that's what I've taught my kids. And where I'm from, that's the rule, not the exception. So, before you denigrate (if you don't know the meaning of the word, look it up) a generation of, for the vast majority, hard working people, maybe you should try reading a little more. And by the way, this program contains a spell checker. Learn to use it!
the name of the city says it all: DUMBASSCUS
Jeeez Josh... just read your rant... don't you think you should get back on your meds... like real quick.
Hey, it's Muslims killing Muslims. Can't get any better than that. One great situation. US stay the hell out of it
"US stay the hell out of it" .......... about ten years too late.
We have made whole new generations of enemies.
geez 6dogs go ahead drink the kool-aid
Its a bad thing telling people its OK to murder your government if you don't agree with them. How far do you think your government would let you go? You wont make it past a peaceful protest before they start killing you.
...don't you mean NATO hits Syrian headquarters ?....
