Reports: India 'Hitler' store owner to change shop name

Ajit Solanki / AP

Indians walk past a shop named "Hitler" in Ahmadabad, India, on Aug. 29, 2012. According to reports, the owner has decided to change its name after sparking a controversy.

The owner of a clothing store in western India who sparked a row for naming his shop "Hitler" has decided to change its name, according to reports.

Rajesh Shah, whose store opened last month in Ahmedabad city in the western state of Gujarat, had claimed he only recently learned why the name would offend people.

Shah told The Indian Express newspaper that he decided on Monday to change the shop's name because he was "getting political pressure" to do so.

'Hitler' clothing store in India sparks row

"We received at least 10 calls every day from the U.S., the U.K., Dubai, Germany and Israel," Shah said according to the Express. "It was getting very annoying, as many of these people called at odd hours."

Israel's consul general in Mumbai also asked Indian state officials to intervene, The Associated Press reported.

Shah has said the idea for the shop's name came from a nickname for one of his business partner's grandfather, who was known for his "strict nature."

"It was only recently that we read about Hitler on the Internet," Shah told The Times of India newspaper last week.

Many people in Ahmedabad believe the shop's name was a marketing gimmick, the AP said.

1.Swastika is an ancient Hindu symbol

2. To Indians seeking independence from Britain Hitler was a hero

3. None of these people would have been protesting if he named his store "Stalin", even as that SOB killed twice as many people as Hitler.

Yes Muslims did fight with Hitler and so did Jews. Six of Hitlers generals were Jews and there were also two full divisions of Jews that fought for Hitler. So learn a little history before saying something is wrong with someones brain.

Max, yes, the swastika is a Hindu symbol, but pairing with the name Hitler makes it somewhat suspect that they had no idea what 'Hitler' was.

Some people also need to do more research, the Buddist symbol goes to the right and not the left as the Nazi symbol does. I have a diificult time believing this was accidental and not a publicity stunt.

THe Swastika is a hindu symbol, however the swastika in the sign is not the original Hindu version, it is the one that was rotated and used in the Nazi flag. The Hindu version is not on a diagonal slant like that.

Also in Hindu the Swastika is a symbol of Shakti "Shakti embodies the active feminine energy Prakriti of Purusha, who is Vishnu in Vaishnavism or Shiva in Shaivism. Vishnu's female counterpart is called Lakshmi, with Parvati being the female half of Shiva." If you look at the casual menswear in the display, I find it hard to believe that they intended to invoke "feminine energy" as part of their branding.

Also - Hitler's opinion of India was not very nice. Any Indian who thinks of Hitler as a hero is as much a nut as those who think of him that way at home. The goal of the Axis was never Indian independence, they just wanted to replace the British with German, Italian and Japanese.

Hitler's views on India were disparaging.[57] He considered the British colonial rule of the subcontinent as an exemplary one and intended the German rule in the occupied East to resemble it.[57] Hitler thought little of the Indian independence movement, declaring the freedom fighters of being racially inferior "Asiatic jugglers".[57] As early as 1930 he spoke of the Indian freedom movement as the rebellion of the "lower Indian race against the superior English Nordic race", and that the British were free to deal with any subversive Indian activists as they liked.[58] In 1937 he told the British Foreign Secretary Lord Halifax that the British should "shoot Gandhi, and if this doesn't suffice to reduce them to submission, shoot a dozen leading members of the Congress, and if that doesn't suffice shoot 200, and so on, as you make it clear that you mean business."[58] Nazi ideologist Alfred Rosenberg stated that although the Vedic culture was Aryan in origin, any Nordic blood had long since been lost due to racial mixing.[57] Like Hitler, he viewed the British rule in India as being desirable.

On 18 January 1942, it was decided that the Indian subcontinent was to be divided between the Axis powers. Germany was to take the part of British India which is today approximately Pakistan, while the rest was marked for Japan.[57] blockquote>

Sorry, but if he honestly didn't know and used the swastika in the dot like that he's an incredibly lucky idiot to use them in this way or it was intentional. No one in their right mind believes this was an accident.

Regardless of whether or not the swastika is a cultural symbol in Indian and Middle-Eastern culture or not, you do not see it in signs or as part of any advertisements as part of common life. It was a more common symbol historically, not in the 20th or 21st century.

I don't see it as a matter for the Israeli embassy to get involved in though. It's a small store in a city. Who cares, it's not like he's getting royalties or something.

Denko don’t be a buthole. You are just like the NAZI it seems any
time you get you blame it on the Muslims. The shop owner is a Hindu not a
Muslim and yes the European history of mass murder is generally not taught in
the east so most people don't really know about the genocide until they look it
up not like in US where we hear about it a lot. The funny thing is that we in
the west never learn about the past mistake even when it is in our faces.

I wonder what happened to this guy saying that he could not afford to change the name because he could not afford new signage. In an earlier article he said he would only change the name if others gave him the money to do it. I guess with all the outrage and negative publicity over the name he found a way to come up with the money. I do not buy that he did not know exactly what he was doing when he used that name. I think he was counting on getting the publicity out of it but did not count on just how negative the feelings would be. And for those who keep making excuses about the swastika being an ancient Hindu symbol, please educate yourself a little. Yes, there is an ancient Hindu symbol that resembles the swastika, but it was oriented in the opposite rotational direction of the one Hitler used. The one used by the store owner to dot the "i" in the name is not the Hindu version, it is the Nazi one.

The name of his business is his business; you don't like it, don't do business with him. Harassing him with odd time phone calls is a chargeable crime. Is there a patent on the name (they issue patents on most idiotic things!)

        #1.18 - Tue Sep 4, 2012 2:37 PM EDT

The most widely accepted figure for Stalin's deaths are around 20 million or so. Some have estimated that number could be as high as 60 million, others put it as low as 10 million. The exact number is hard to pinpoint and depends largely on whether you count only those who were executed or those who died from the horrendous conditions of his network of labor camps. Both Stalin and Hitler were equally monsters, I don't think it serves any great purpose to argue which one was the "better" monster.

There were Jewish soldiers, Bryan Mark Rigg recently published a book about it. Most of them didn't consier themselves to be Jewish, and were already in the military. These were people who had some Jewish ancestry in their background that would have classified them as Jews under the Third Reich.

        an excerpt:

The process of investigation and removal, however, was marred by a highly inconsistent application of Nazi law. Numerous "exemptions" were made in order to allow a soldier to stay within the ranks or to spare a soldier's parent, spouse, or other relative from incarceration or far worse. (Hitler's own signature can be found on many of these "exemption" orders.) But as the war dragged on, Nazi politics came to trump military logic, even in the face of the Wehrmacht's growing manpower needs, closing legal loopholes and making it virtually impossible for these soldiers to escape the fate of millions of other victims of the Third Reich.

But it really isn't important in the end, it in no way implies that Jews approved of Hitler, or that Hitler wasn't out targeting Jews. It's interesting what people will do to save themselves or their loved ones, but otherwise it doesn't really make any difference.

Max - Swastika is an ancient Hindu symbol.

You are correct, except the Nazis put the symbol at a 40-degree angle and turned it into their own representation. That was a very unfortunate thing to do for historical purposes.

The SS division that was Muslim was the 13. Waffen-Gebirgs-Division der SS Handschar

this division was anti-partisan in Yugoslavia, Croatia, etc. nasty reputation.. It abdicated when Russians were on it's doorstep. This division was raised in 1943 when Heinrich Himmler saw that the German Aryan manpower pool was drying up and then with Hitler's approval began to recruit non German people to volunteer to fight in SS divisions. Lots of these divisions were thrown into the forray on the Russian front. Lots of them were ahnihilated, but one stands out, the Wallonian (Belgian volunteers-28. SS-Freiwilligen-Panzer-Grenadier-Division Wallonien. These guys fought bravely and put a hurting on the Russians. Anyway..

point is, muslims DID fight for hitler.

India has always welcomed Jews, and people of all faiths. It is a very tolerant country. (In a nation of one billion, you are bound to find a few fools.)

Over 2.5 million Indians fought on the side of the Allies in World War 2. However, the school history textbooks there do not have detailed information on the Holocaust. I think many people there( unless they do reading on their own)----are not aware about the horrible things the Nazis did.

This is just a case of two different cultures not understanding each other, except in this case, one of the cultures feels as if it is important enough to force its will on the other.

Funny, especially the part where he says he "only recently" read about Adolf Hitler online. Sure, pal. Instead of playing dumb, why not just admit that you did it to be controversial, and because you wanted the cheap and easy publicity. You're also not going to be apologizing genuinely, because you got exactly what you were hoping for.

Oops! We did it again. We justified this guy's decision to do something to get attention by giving him the attention he craved.

What the town should have done was refuse to shop in that store until he changed the name. I don't believe for a moment he didn't know the controversy choosing that name would create. He wanted the free publicity.

John, that may be so, but when used in conjunction with the name Hitler, it is obvious this guy knew who Hitler was, and knew the use of the Swastika in Nazi Germany. Additionally, the Hindu Swastika does indeed look different than the way the Nazi's used it. Don't be such a condescending twit.

Some things need government intervention. It's a store name the public should avoid, but if the owner didn't know who Hitler was, (unlikely because of the swastika), then you might expect the younger generations not to know who he is either. The real problem is the failure to properly educate people so there's no doubt about who Hitler is.

Government intervention, like the way the Nazi government intervened? A free society isn't the rosy artificial utopia envisioned by supporters of big government, but that's the price to pay for liberty. Free markets give the people the power to vote with their wallet and voice rather than depending on some overpaid bureaucrat to do the thinking for them.

I think conservatives are a little more concerned about a baby's right to live than the selfish desires of liberals. Also, politicans like Ron Paul fully support keeping the federal government out of gay marriage issues.

Except the swastika in the picture looks exactly like a Nazi and not a traditional Hindu swastika. Google Hindu swastika and you will see that it is not usually tilted like the Nazi swastika the store owner used. The Hindu swastika also often has dots in the design and the ends are often slightly curved.

Johntr, if you are going to be a condescending jerk, at least do some research.

Yes but they are not using it the way I see images of it as it is used in Hindu culture, and they are not naming their store according to the Western translation of "to be good" from the Sanskrit for it. They are showing it tilted, as the Nazis made it.

If they were showing it in non-Nazi-perverted form and the store was named something along the lines of "good luck clothing" I'd be inclined to agree with Johntr. But they are showing it as the Nazis did, and I doubt, in this day and age, they are ignorant of who Hitler was and the horrific things he did and stood for.

I think it was a shameless attempt to grab headlines, and it worked just a little too well for them...

                      Johntr,

You are right about the Hindu Swastika and it greatly pre-dating the German one that has become infamous. However, there is a significant difference between the two. The German one does not have the 4 dots and is rotated 45 degrees, making it distinctively different. I can't imagine that a real Hindu (or even a non-Hindu raised in a Hindu country), would "accidentally" use the German version to dot the "I" in Hitler's name. If you notice, ALL the letters are uppercase EXCEPT the "I". He intentionally made it lower case so he would be have a place to put the Swastika. Do you honestly believe he accidentally picked the German version over the Hindu one AND accidentally placed it correctly with the murderers name that made it famous? Even the locals thought it was a publicity stunt, and they are presumably void of the "Western Ignorance" you talked about.

Talk about western ignorance. Do you honestly think that Indians are so ignorant, they don't know who Hitler is? India was still a colony at the time. Of course they knew who Britain's enemy was. Some of them even attempted to ally themselves with Hitler in order to get Germany's help in breaking free from Britain.

                      You sir, are an IDIOT!

Here's what I like without knowing how much truth people are telling. Someone does something that offends someone or smears someone or accuses someone. Then they get more facts. Then they reassess the situation. Then they apologize, make changes, or form another opinion. In the current US political arena, we see NONE of that. It doesn't matter what is true or not true. Stick by it. Ignore facts. Forget apologizing. No weakness. All this tells me is that it is OK to lie, spin the truth, spew ideological nonsense, EVEN IF the facts show the opposite. I am saying this over and over. As bad as the Obama administration is in many ways, all I see from the republicans is either ignorance, lies, or spin. Who is the worst? The repbulicans. But both parties and all politicians to read the morale of this story. It is OK to change you mind. It is OK to apologize. It is OK to get information and facts and then form or change an opinion. They won't, though, and this is why I don't like or trust them.

It's not the name that offends (many people have had the unfortunate name Hitler), it's the swastika. And since he added it to the "I" in his logo, it's obvious that he knew exactly what he was doing. Unfortunately, he got exactly what he was fishing for - free worldwide publicity. You certainly don't have to pay for advertising anymore. Just stick something controversial on youtube and the rest of the world advertises for you.

Second of all, I am willing to bet that there are a lot of young people out there who do not know who Hitler is or the extent of his horrific actions. I think the simple fact that people are comparing our current President to Hitler shows how much people have forgotten the disgusting and catastrophic things that occurred under Hitler. People should be educated enough to know that no USA leader (Republican or Democrat) has ever been evil enough to be compared to that man.

                        Obama is a fag.

                        Obama hates Jews.

So because Obama doesn't kiss the Jews ass like you do he hates Jews. Your ignorance is amazing.

This is classic Fox News ignorance and clearly illustrates your level of education. Leaders from Israel stated several weeks ago when Romney made a fool of himself, that OBAMA has done more for ISRAEL than ANY PRESIDENT in the History of the U.S.

Snoop - I think you need to get back on some meds. You have some serious deep seated issues that require all kinds of an intervention.

You should also remember that if it were not for OBAMA, the entire U.S. economy would've collapsed. What freaking ignorance! It's obvious you're probably one of the working poor without health care, who will vote against his own dumb interest.

Snoop-I agree with you, except for one thing. God does not hate anyone. Docregi-our economy is on the verge of collapse-just a matter of time. Obama has done nothing to help it, he has only made it worse and the blame Bush crap doesn't work anymore. The debt is already 16 trillion and growing-that is more than our economy takes in-where do you think the money will keep coming from? The US pays 10 billion a month in interest and it is going to England, Japan and China. I would rather be a working poor without health care than sit on my butt and not contribute to society and think that the working owe me what they are working hard for. Is it really fair to those who are working to give it to those who DO NOT WANT TO WORK? Is it fair that a person making $5 a month above the poverty guidelines (which they cannot qualify for any kind of help) pay more on their phone bill so that the nonworking can have as many free phones as they want because they don't want to go to work? This war on people who are rich is really ignorant. Go ahead and vote in your own dumb interest and see what will happen.

docregi, you are using MSNBC new propaganda. Obama is a Jew hated and has promoted Palestinian nationalism over a Jewish homeland. You tactics are so transparent. You call anyone ignorant who has an opinion different than yourself.

The liveral news outlet out number the conservative ones by a wide margin.

MplsMinn, your personal attacks are a violation of the terms of service policy. Just because I speak the truth about an economic incompetent who has no business persons in his cabinet, who gave $1 Trillion of tax payer money to his banker friends with no restrictions, who still has prisoners in Guantanamo Bay more than three years after pledging he would close the prison and who is still torturing prisoners after the statement that his regime would never torture -- look at the facts.

                          And he's a closet homosexual.

docregi, the entire US economy did collapse. Thank you fag Obama. Housing values plummeted.

And what did he do? Gave $1 Trillion to his banker friends with no restrictions.

Sheri-78, please go back to the middle ages with your hunt for trolls. I wish you good luck. ha ha ha ...
