Pakistani Christian villagers protest the country's strict blasphemy laws in Korian on Aug. 30.
A Christian girl arrested in Pakistan for defaming Islam was granted bail on Friday, a judge said, days after police detained a Muslim cleric on suspicion of planting evidence to frame her in a case that caused an international outcry.
Rimsha Masih, believed to be 14, may be in danger if she is set free and stays in Pakistan. Her arrest last month angered religious and secular groups worldwide but protests in Pakistan attracted only a handful of supporters.
In Muslim Pakistan, the mere allegation of causing offence to Islam can mean death. Those accused under an anti-blasphemy law are sometimes lynched by the public even if they are found innocent by the courts.
The girl would be reunited with her family at a location that was being kept secret for security reasons, said Robinson Asghar, an aide to Minister for National Harmony Paul Bhatti.
There were no plans to send Masih abroad, Bhatti told Reuters.
"I am really satisfied and happy," he said. "I believe justice has prevailed."
Masih was accused by Muslim neighbors of burning Islamic religious texts and arrested, but police recently said a cleric had been taken into custody after witnesses reported he had torn pages from a Koran and planted them in Masih's bag beside burned papers.
One tip apparently came from a local man who claimed he saw the cleric — Imam Khalid Jadoon — mixing holy text pages with ashes, NBC reported.
"I asked Jadoon why he was fabricating the evidence," Hafiz Zubair told a local news channel. "He said that this would ensure a strong case against the girl and would ultimately help them in evicting the Christians from the locality."
Jadoon is now in jail, awaiting his hearing on blaspheny charges.
In Masih's impoverished village on the edge of Islamabad, some said they were disappointed that she had not been sentenced.
"This is wrong. She burned the Koran," said resident Ijaz Sarwar near the local mosque.
Nearby, Saddam Hussein, 18, expressed sympathies for the cleric accused of framing Masih. "If she is freed, the maulvi (cleric) should be freed as well," he said.
Two bonds of 500,000 Pakistani Rupees each — for a total of roughly $10,000 were to be deposited Saturday — for her release. She is charged with desecrating a holy place and desecrating a holy text, NBC News reported.
Million-strong petition
Activists and human rights groups say vague terminology has led to the anti-blasphemy law's misuse, and that it dangerously discriminates against tiny minority groups.
Human Rights Watch welcomed Masih's release and urged authorities to consider reforming the law.
"This child should not have been behind bars at all. All charges against her should be dropped," the international rights group said in a statement.
"Pakistan's criminal justice system should instead concentrate on holding her accuser accountable for inciting violence against the child and members of the local Christian community."
More than a million people globally have signed a petition started by Masih's father for her release.
An embattled minority: Christians in Pakistan
But despite the international condemnation, many Pakistanis support the blasphemy law.
Last year, Punjab province governor Salman Taseer was shot dead by his bodyguard for suggesting the law be reformed. Lawyers hailed Taseer's killer as a hero, tossing rose petals at him after he was arrested.
Taseer had been defending a Christian woman, Asia Bibi, who was jailed on blasphemy charges. She is still in jail on death row.
Two months after Taseer's murder, Minister for Minorities Shahbaz Bhatti, a Christian, was killed by the Taliban for demanding changes to the law.
Critics of Pakistan's leaders say they are too worried about an extremist backlash to speak out against the law in a nation where religious conservatism is increasingly prevalent.
Christians, who make up four percent of Pakistan's population of 180 million, have been especially concerned about the blasphemy law, saying it offers them no protection.
Convictions hinge on witness testimony and are often linked to vendettas, they complain.
In 2009, 40 houses and a church were set ablaze by a mob of 1,000 Muslims in the town of Gojra, in Punjab province. At least seven Christians were burnt to death. The attacks were triggered by reports of the desecration of the Koran.
Two Christian brothers accused of writing a blasphemous letter against the Prophet Mohammad were gunned down outside a court in the eastern city of Faisalabad in July of 2010.

In my opinion the same can be said for any organized religion. They expect tollrerance from other religions but grant none. That is why I'm against organized religion in any form.
If you want to worship God why do you need to belong to a group that demands you follow their rules and interpretation of his word and pay to them your tithes and offerrings? That is intolerance and being against some one you do not agree with is the beginning of these absurdities of which all types of peoples, religious and non-religious, are guilty. The only thing I would say I am against are those who are intolerant of others and want to punish them because of their religious beliefs or lack of religious belief. That is what I believe, in part, what the founders of this country had in mind when they created the concept of separation of church and state.

No. Thats not true at all. As with everything in in life you have extremists in every religion. My Heavenly Father operates out of love- Unconditional Love for all mankind including those who reject Him and chooses not to believe in him. He still loves them too and respects their choices. He does not, never have, and never will force Himself or his ways ony anybody. If you do not want to believe in him and worship Him that is your decision. He never said all mankind is required to worship him and believe in him. He never said that. I am a Christian and I am very spiritual. I am not religious and I am not an extremist by any means. There is a huge difference in being spiritual and being religious, please believe me. They are not the same at all. People try to say they are but that is a lie. A very huge lie. It is not fair that we all get thrown together like that. Because we are all completely different. I operate the way my Lord and Savior tells me to operate which is out of Love and Compassion for my fellow man. For he said: "How can you love me when you have never even seen me but yet you have no love for your fellow man whom you see everyday?" He also " The world will know you are my disciples by the way you love one another." That means as Christians we are love everyone including our enemies and we ought to have a very compassionate heart. That means we tolerate and accept everyone even if there beliefs are different from ours. We are not supposed to force our beliefs nor our ways on anybody. We are supposed to treat everyone with kindness and humility. We are supposed to be gentle to everyone. For some reason though extremist and right wing religious republicans forget these facts. Just Like the Muslims here in Pakistan, they want sole control. They want the Christians out of there. And those Christians might not have even done what they had been accused of, and they burned the church anyway. They should have properly investigated first and if they found the accusation to be true then took action by taking them to court. They should have not been allowed to insitute such a law in the first place if it was that extreme and anything could be considered blasphemy. That was wrong. However, their agenda is and was to drive out the Christians. That is wrong. However, maybe the Christians should just find another place thats a whole lot better and easier to live and just move there and live. But at the same I do understand exactly why they are staying and not daring to leave. I understand that one hundred percent and I honestly dont blame them. I pray the Christians are innocent and that the Muslims are wrong. And I pray that the Muslims be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Because to just burn a whole entire church going off of hearsay alone is so wrong. If the Christians were not bothering them and starting mess with them, and were meeting peacefully, then they had no right to go set their church on fire nor to do to commit any act of violence toward them period. And even if some of the Christians burned a Koran that still does justify the Muslim burning their whole church and killing seven people. They could've taken to them to court and and let the court handle it. And even if the Christians did do something to them, they should have retaliated evenly and not burned downed their church( I am not condoning this reaction either). All of the politicians that said they wanted to do all of these things and them some were repulbicans. They believe they should be tracking every citizens internet and home activities. And President Bush actually started illegally wiretapping phones, in the name of "war on terrorism" which actaully does limit our privacy from the government. But in order for them to monitor you you have a criminal bacground and have committed some form of terrorist act. That is the part that most people leave out. SC, it is a common misconception that in order for there to be morality, there has to be religion. I totally disagree, morality was there long before religion. People evolved morals because we want to live together in some semblence of peace. Morality is simply pragmatic, without it we would be at each others throats. However, morality can exist without religion, and religion can be amoral.

Sounds like the cleric in this situation got his training from the police and prosecutors here in the United States!! When I read stories like this one is reminds me that many countries, which endorse this kind of barbaric behavior and then dare to say it's 'God's will', are still living in the dark ages.. Even with all the problems our planet faces today with climate and declining resources, these people would just as soon tear a child apart limb by limb then permit them the right to speak their hearts and minds!
The very idea that every human is entitled to freedom of speech and religion is so appalling to them they would just as soon burn someone at the stake then give them this kind of privilege, which thankfully, most Democratic countries enjoy..

And this is the type of religion that we want to grant rights in America by our government and activist judges. We want to recognize sharia law - when they kill innocent people (christian), women are treated worse than dogs, any free thinking person who wants to pursue any different religion is subject to imprisonment, beating and possibly murder or execution. These are just a few of the tenants of the muslim faith. The faith is never good!! It is just more friendly (quiet politically) when their numbers are fewer than 30% of the population.
