US-Israel rift over Iran widens; Obama denies Netanyahu asked for meeting

Ties between the United States and Israel showed new signs of strain, after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized the U.S. for not taking a harder line on Iran. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

Updated at 9:30 p.m. ET: Ties between the United States and Israel showed new signs of strain on Tuesday, after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized the U.S. for not taking a harder line on Iran.

The White House, for its part, denied an Israeli source's claim that President Barack Obama had refused Netanyahu's request for a meeting later this month during the U.N. General Assembly.

"The president arrives in New York for the U.N. on Monday, September 24th, and departs on Tuesday, September 25th," said National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor. "The prime minister doesn't arrive in New York until later in the week. They're simply not in the city at the same time.

"But the president and PM are in frequent contact," he added, "and the PM will meet with other senior officials, including Secretary (Hillary) Clinton, during his visit."

Obama spoke with Netanyahu for an hour by phone Tuesday night, according to a White House statement, during which the two leaders discussed the threat posed by Iran's nuclear program and reaffirmed their shared goal of preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

An Israeli official earlier told Reuters on condition of anonymity that Netanyahu's aides had asked for a meeting and "the White House has got back to us and said it appears a meeting is not possible. It said that the president's schedule will not permit that."

Reuters

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speaks during a news conference Tuesday in Jerusalem where he made threats to attack Iran if the U.S. and other allies don't.

The White House said Netanyahu had not requested a meeting.

Netanyahu, who has met Obama on all his U.S. trips since 2009, has been pushing him to adopt a tougher line against Iran.

He argues that setting a clear boundary for Iran's uranium enrichment activities and imposing stronger economic sanctions could deter Tehran from developing nuclear weapons and mitigate the need for military action.

Related: Iran sanctions exceed expectations but still don't change Tehran's behavior
Related: Iran advancing on nuclear warhead calculations, sources say

In comments that appeared to bring the possibility of an Israeli attack on Iran closer, Netanyahu had earlier taken Washington to task for rebuffing his call to set a "red line" for Iran's nuclear program, which has already prompted four rounds of U.N. sanctions.

"The world tells Israel 'Wait, there's still time'. And I say, 'Wait for what? Wait until when?'" Netanyahu said Tuesday, speaking in English.

"Those in the international community who refuse to put red lines before Iran don't have a moral right to place a red light before Israel," he added, addressing a news conference with Bulgaria's prime minister.

The website of Israel's daily newspaper Haaretz called his words "an unprecedented verbal attack on the U.S. government."
Iran makes no secret of its hostility to Israel, widely assumed to be the region's only nuclear-armed power, but says its nuclear program is purely peaceful.

Netanyahu's relations with Obama have been strained over Iran and other issues, such as Jewish settlement building in the occupied West Bank.

Yuval Steinitz, finance minister of Israel, offers insight on keeping the Israeli economy afloat despite the threat of Iran's nuclear program and a war of words.

But he has never framed his differences with Obama -- who has pledged he will "always have Israel's back" and is deep in a re-election campaign -- in moral terms.

Republican challenger Mitt Romney has accused Obama of throwing Israel "under the bus."

Netanyahu's comments followed U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's remarks on Monday that the United States would not set a deadline in further talks with Iran, and that there was still time for diplomacy to work.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said on Tuesday that Washington would have little more than a year to act to stop Iran if it decided to produce a nuclear weapon.

Iran has threatened to retaliate against Israel and U.S. interests in the Gulf if it is attacked, and any such conflict could throw Obama's re-election bid off course.

Netanyahu did not mention Clinton by name but pointedly parroted her use of the word "deadline," saying: "If Iran knows that there is no 'deadline', what will it do? Exactly what it's doing. It's continuing, without any interference, towards obtaining a nuclear weapons capability and from there, nuclear bombs ...

"The sanctions have hurt the Iranian economy but they haven't stopped the Iranian nuclear program," he added. "That's a fact. And the fact is that every day that passes, Iran gets closer and closer to nuclear bombs."

Recent tougher Israeli rhetoric has stoked speculation that Israel might attack Iran before the U.S. election in November, believing that Obama would be forced to give it military help to avoid alienating pro-Israeli voters.

But over the past week, Netanyahu, in calling for a red line, had appeared to be backing away from military action and preparing the ground for a possible meeting with Obama.

Opinion polls suggest that a majority of Israelis do not want their military to strike Iran without U.S. support.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak seemed to criticize Netanyahu's assault on the Jewish state's biggest ally.

"Despite the differences and importance of maintaining Israel's independence of action, we must remember the importance of partnership with the United States and try as much as possible not to hurt that," a statement from his office said.

This is the go-ahead for Israel. They will not wait any longer. We gave Egypt $1 billion dollars yesterday and they gave us our flag in bits with graffitti all over the embassy in Cairo. This is a big mistake and I am not surprised. This might get a few more of the American Jews in their Mercedes and BMW's to consider who they vote for.

Hmmm, Communist bent on the demise of America and it's Capitalistic Economy or Capitalism where you are rewarded for your work, efforts, risk, and responsible for your actions. Let's take the easy way out and everyone can be equal and life will be so full of easy with no challenge, no desire to innovate, no reason to take risk. It will just be wonderful.

I just lost my country.

Yeah, tag, they are created equal.....and from then on they have an equal opportunity to succeed in life; some do, and some don't....and some of the latter sit around with their hands out waiting for the successful to pull their load for them. If you want to be one of the naive suckers who think you can save them all, be my guest. Meanwhile, I'll be busy giving a hand to those who are actually trying to get up the ladder!

It's nice to have a president that has some balls and isn't just Israel's pawn like Bush was. It's about time we took the training wheels off and let Israel stand on their own two feet. If it were not for the foreign aid they take from the tax payers of America Israel would not exist, they have no resources, they have no industry, my working 60 hours a week is the only thing that keeps Israel afloat. Did you know they have unlimited unemployment in Israel? yep thats right, you can collect unemployment from the day you turn 18 until the day you die with out ever having had held a job or look for a job, all on the back of the US tax payers. Talk about welfare queens.

Actually, in 2010, Israel had one of the strongest economies in the world. They're still in better shape than a lot of the world...their trade and commerce has nothing to do with your 60 hours a week.

Tag,

We were created equal. Do you suppose we should all dress like Maoist China in the cute overcoats so there will be no disparity? If I choose to close my business in hopes of this equalization will that make us a better people and country? If I decide I've had it and leave where my innovative ways, management skills, willingness to take a risk and provide jobs for intelligent people, will that benefit the US? Perhaps we should dress like Lemmings!!! Now, that sounds fair and equal!

Why should I take the risk for those that want to sit on their backside and reap the reward? You want equal, let's have people pay taxes in a fair and equal manner. If you use a lot of Free Government, you pay more in taxes! You don't use Free Government, you pay no taxes. If we all chose to use little or less government, we all pay less taxes. How is that for equal!!! I never chose to use a lot of government because I despise inefficiencies.

So much for that Obama diplomacy...

Real diplomatic!

Is this the Obama doctrine: Don't talk to your allies. Talk only to your enemies!

I'm just trying to figure this out. On the other hand of course Obama is talking to the Taliban, and Iran, and he's become fast friends with the Muslim Brotherhood!

.

So let's look at some of the headlines from around the world over the past four years:

Pew Research: Global Opinion of Obama Slips, International Policies Faulted

Yahoo News: Around world, Obama's presidency a disappointment

Japan Today: U.S.-Russia relations stagnate as Obama's 'reset' policy falters

Daily Mail: How the world is disappointed in Obama's performance (and his broken promises)

Spiegel magazine: Germans Increasingly Disillusioned with Obama

NY Times: Japan Cools to America as It Prepares for Obama Visit

And now this tension with Israel.

.

OBAMA HAS FAILED!

TIME TO KICK HIM OUT!

The public whining Netanyahu is doing is causing great harm to Israeli diplomacy, and its relationship with the U.S.

Both the Israeli and American defense communities are both firmly against a strike against Iran. Hell, even the Israeli public ain't convinced it's the right way to go.

Bibi is digging himself a big hole. He should step down for the good of the nation.

Does he not remember the difficulties in Lebanon with Hezbollah under Olmert's watch? Does he not remember eliminating the PLO in Lebanon and watching as Hezbollah rose up to take its place?

Idiot politicians like Netanyahu are not grounded in history, and end up repeating the mistakes of the past. Still, he panders to his coalition and clings to power.

He has to realize that Americans are not lapdogs of Israeli policy. When there is stiff resistance he should respect that.

While do not support everything that Israel does, Netanyahu does have a point when it comes to setting some deadline for Iran. The sanctions have not stopped their nuclear program and the the idea that we are just going to continue with sanctions and attempts at diplomacy indefinitely is absurd. There needs to be a point where we say that no matter what we do they are not going to stop and we have to stop them. No one in their right mind believes that the Iranians are not working towards nuclear weapons. Just the fact that they are building their facilities where they are and that they have refused IAEA inspections of the sites says pretty clearly that they are hiding something. If Iran's nuclear program truly was only for peaceful purposes they would not be building their facilities in hardened sites and preventing IAEA access to the sites. International experts with no connection to the US or Israel have said that they believe Iran is working on nuclear weapons. Obama will not do anything about Iran's nuclear program. He has made it pretty clear that he will not take any action to stop Iran until he actually sees an actual nuclear weapon tested at which point it will be too late. Iran getting nuclear weapons represents a clear danger to the entire world and it must not be allowed to happen. The fanatics running Iran would not hesitate to use a nuclear weapon if it meant they could destroy Israel, even if it meant they would be killed themselves. They would gladly die as martyrs to their cause if it they could take Israel with them. This is the mentality we are up against with the Iranians and this is the reason they can not be allowed to get nuclear weapons.

Israel is one of Amercas strongest supporters and I hope they go ahead and take out the Iranian nuclear reactors. All America would have to do afterwards is say we didn't agree with the Israeli strike and that is all folks. Israel doesn't want the US to fight for them. They are plenty capable of defending their country. All Israel wants is US understanding if they have to take action against Iran. I've been to Israel a few years ago and all the Israelis want is peace but if their security is threatened they take care of their business.

Oi what a mess. I get that Israel is scared and for good reason.

Exactly what are they afraid of - the "Wipe Israel off the map" was over 5 years ago and MISTRANSLATED - the real translation asks for the regime of Netanhahu to go away... it was NOTa threat agaisnt the citizens of Israel.

Iran never said they wanted to obliterate Israel or "wiped off the map." Iran has clarified this numerous times but the warmongers keep up this insane mantra - it is not Iran who is harassing its neighbors, the US or the EU...It is Israel, the US and the EU harassing Iran for years now. So, Iran decides to strike back with WORDS and the powers that be want to strike Iran with a nuclear weapon or start another war.....What Iran really said:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNDkhmceQR8

I HATE repeating myself but, here I go again:

Iran is Persian - not Arabic - it is also surrounded by US PERMANENT BASES... a brief history, during the cold war, the US needed Israel as a base, etc... we have been giving them billions in dollars and weapons ever since, but the Cold War is over - we don't need them, look at our bases now:

http://www.businessinsider.com/iran-surrounded-by-us-military-bases-2011-12

If we engage in war with Iran - we can all look forward to another Cold War - Putin and China will not stand for this...for obvious reasons:

Let's get the ENTIRE quote - from Iran that happened late last week when Israel was beating the war drum for the US to strike Iran -

Iran could hit U.S. bases in the Middle East in response to any Israeli strike on its nuclear facilities even if U.S. forces played no role in the attack, Hezbollah Secretary General Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah said on Monday.

“A decision has been taken to respond, and the response will be very great,” Nasrallah said in an interview with the Beirut-based Al Mayadeen television network, Reuters reported.
“The response will not be just inside the Israeli entity -- American bases in the whole region could be Iranian targets,” he said, citing information he said was from Iranian officials. “If Israel targets Iran, America bears responsibility.”
Nasrallah stated that there are divisions in Israel over whether to attack Iran. “Personally I do not expect the Israeli enemy -- at least in the coming months or foreseeable future -- (to launch) an attack on the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he added.

Let's not forget that Iran has NOT STARTED a war since 1804 ... this out of text comment in our media talks of a strike started by ISRAEL. Iran has no reason to start a war - it's Persian, it's Arab neighbors will not get involved and Iran has shown great patience (considering our drone strikes to the nation, our spying on Iran, etc).

http://www.theatlanticwire.com/global/2011/12/fallen-us-drone-nearly-led-covert-strike-iran/45857/

A longer brief history:

Iran has NOT STARTED a war since 1804 - quite a feat for a Persian country surrounded by Arab countries (and all the US bases that we have in the ME).

When you have the ex-Chief of the Israeli Mossad openly stating that Netanyahu is "crazed" and only wants to war with Iran for personal reasons (and against the advice of Israeli Military Generals), you have to wonder why the US would even bother to consider getting into this "war-vendetta."

Iran's oil is thick crude, it is very expensive to refine, which is why Iran only refines 2% of its oil for use inside the country, and sells the rest as heavy crude. Nuclear power would be an asset to the country. Would they be able to manufacture the enriched uranium for a weapon, probably - but their problem is delivery. Even the International Atomic Energy Agency says that Iran does not have any missiles that could deliver a nuclear payload and they are years away from having that technology.

If Israel decides to to go nuclear on Iran they will be signing their own death sentence - not because Iran will strike back but because Iran has one of the largest fresh water reservoirs in the Middle East. Israel has virtually drained the once vast reservoir under Gaza (the Palestinians have been under water restrictions for years, while the Israeli's used what they wanted). The desalination plants are not enough - so Iran sells water to its neighbors, if that water becomes lethal - Israel will be poisoned by its own bomb.

So who looks crazier in the region - Iran -who as had many US-Israeli drone strikes to its nuclear power plants that they are trying to build and now suffers under the US and EU sanctions (Iran has not RETALIATED FOR THIS BARBARIC TREATMENT) OR - Israel - who beats a war drum for US Military Servicemen and Servicewomen to fight for them? I say the Israeli government looks crazier and the US should not get drawn into this - ever.

Republican challenger Mitt Romney has accused Obama of throwing Israel "under the bus".

If he does not jump into war with Iran over Israel, he is seen weak and afraid of getting involved. Letting our alliance with Israel suffer will send chills throughout the Nato countries.

If he does jump in, he is seen as another war mongering President dragging the US into yet another middle eastern war that we don't want. And what will Russia and China do?

What would you do if it was your call?

Either way, it's sure to have a direct effect on his re-election.

If you go to HuffPost, the liberals bloggers detest Israel. The democrat convention tried hard to marginalize Israel with their platform changes.

David Gregory said this weekend that every president has promised that Iran will not get nuclear weapons, but Iran continues. I get that the media no longer believes that promise can be kept by any president. It does not appear that Obama intends to stop them with any means possible. Yes, the sanctions have been stepped up, but that just draws out the eventual end game.

If Iran gets nuclear weapons others in the region will want them as well. Let's face it, the world becomes less safe if this promise by our previous and current president is broken.

It always boiled down to the need to use force to stop Iran and maybe even force as this point will not be enough.

I feel for Israel. Their neighborhood is less safe today than a year ago. I guess the Israelis could do as Helen Thomas once suggested and that was to go back to wherever the h....they came from. Liberals agree with her sentiment.

Questions periodically arise about whether or not Iranian President Ahmadinejad's statement that he wants to see Israel "wiped off the map" really means, in the original Farsi, that he seeks the elimination of the Jewish state. I republish here, then, a handy list of Ahmadinejad's statements on the subject. Judge for yourself what he hopes to see happen to Israel:

October, 2005: "Our dear Imam said that the occupying regime must be wiped off the map and this was a very wise statement. We cannot compromise over the issue of Palestine... I have no doubt that the new wave that has started in Palestine, and we witness it in the Islamic world too, will eliminate this disgraceful stain from the Islamic world. But we must be aware of tricks."

July, 2006: "Nations in the region will be more furious every day. It won't take long before the wrath of the people turns into a terrible explosion that will wipe the Zionist entity off the map...The basic problem in the Islamic world is the existence of the Zionist regime, and the Islamic world and the region must mobilize to remove this problem. March, 2008: "Gaza is the beginning, the real issue is elsewhere. They should know that both in the prelude and in the real thing they face a defeat and this time they will be uprooted."

April, 2008: "The time has come to see the weakness and collapse of the Zionist regime and its supporters. They are doing everything in order to save it, but they will not succeed."

May, 2008: "Those who think they can revive the stinking corpse of the usurping and fake Israeli regime by throwing a birthday party are seriously mistaken... Today the reason for the Zionist regime's existence is questioned and this regime is on its way to annihilation...has reached the end like a dead rat after being slapped by the Lebanese."

June, 2008: "(Israel) has reached the end of its function and will soon disappear off the geographical domain."

BodyDouble...are you always this disingenuous?

From that article, when it CLEARLY talked about the economy of Israel:

But I've read that the real reason Israel wasn't affected as badly is that Israeli institutions weren't invested in mortgage-backed securities.

This was an advantage but it wasn't enough. In the beginning of 2009, we were in a big crisis. Government revenues were going down, unemployment was climbing sharply, our exports were collapsing. We suffered different effects, mainly on our exports—but exports are about 50 percent of our economy. When our government was formed, right away we announced a two-year budget and a tax reduction in the long term [preceded by a tax hike]. And you see the recovery.

They had a tax hike and then a tax reduction in the long term...nice way of telling half the story, by the way.

Might have something to do with Shel Adelson and the other Israeli Likudists funneling money into Romney's campaign and the RNC.

And then Netanyahu expects to have the President's ear? Not bloody likely. Honestly, what the hell did he expect?

I do not see how Obama can win on this issue.

I know! It's almost as though being the President of the United States requires some really tough decisions!

It's so unfair.

I am sure that GOD is watching over all and that his eyes are on both the US and Israel. People never say anything about the ultimate decision that our President and their Prime Minister have to make concerning another war. If you bless the Jews you will be blessed. If you curse the Jews you will be cursed. I for one believe without a shadow of a doubt that there are going to be a lot of people world wide when this all goes to a full World War what is going to take place. If we want to still have favor from GOD we better listen to the message about taking care of the Jewish people. If not let the cards fall where they may. I just hope that you are all prepared to meet your maker. (And for some of you the Baker)

I hate to say this, but I think Netanyahu is trying to spur one or both of the Candidates running for President of the United States to promise to attack Iran in order to get additional support this election cycle, and I hate to say it because that necessarily means that Netanyahu has no love or concern for the cost of blood and treasure that would be lost by the United States and the American People, and that would make me very sad.

If a promise to attack Iran could win an election, then John McCain would have become POTUS.

@stooopids

Where are your links? Do you speak Farsi... I guess you missed THIS LETTER that Iran's Pres. Ahmadinejad took out in the NYT (New York Times - Full Page) 2006

At least I can supply a link:

http://edition.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/11/29/ahmadinejad.letter/

[Editor's note: This is the full text of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's open letter to "the American People," as supplied to CNN.]

(CNN) -- In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

O, Almighty God, bestow upon humanity the perfect human being promised to all by You, and make us among his followers.

Noble Americans,

Were we not faced with the activities of the US administration in this part of the world and the negative ramifications of those activities on the daily lives of our peoples, coupled with the many wars and calamities caused by the US administration as well as the tragic consequences of US interference in other countries;

Were the American people not God-fearing, truth-loving, and justice-seeking, while the US administration actively conceals the truth and impedes any objective portrayal of current realities;

And if we did not share a common responsibility to promote and protect freedom and human dignity and integrity;

Then, there would have been little urgency to have a dialogue with you.

While Divine providence has placed Iran and the United States geographically far apart, we should be cognizant that human values and our common human spirit, which proclaim the dignity and exalted worth of all human beings, have brought our two great nations of Iran and the United States closer together.

Both our nations are God-fearing, truth-loving and justice-seeking, and both seek dignity, respect and perfection.

Both greatly value and readily embrace the promotion of human ideals such as compassion, empathy, respect for the rights of human beings, securing justice and equity, and defending the innocent and the weak against oppressors and bullies.

We are all inclined towards the good, and towards extending a helping hand to one another, particularly to those in need.

We all deplore injustice, the trampling of peoples' rights and the intimidation and humiliation of human beings.

We all detest darkness, deceit, lies and distortion, and seek and admire salvation, enlightenment, sincerity and honesty.

The pure human essence of the two great nations of Iran and the United States testify to the veracity of these statements.

Noble Americans,

Our nation has always extended its hand of friendship to all other nations of the world.

Hundreds of thousands of my Iranian compatriots are living amongst you in friendship and peace, and are contributing positively to your society. Our people have been in contact with you over the past many years and have maintained these contacts despite the unnecessary restrictions of US authorities.

As mentioned, we have common concerns, face similar challenges, and are pained by the sufferings and afflictions in the world.

We, like you, are aggrieved by the ever-worsening pain and misery of the Palestinian people. Persistent aggressions by the Zionists are making life more and more difficult for the rightful owners of the land of Palestine. In broad day-light, in front of cameras and before the eyes of the world, they are bombarding innocent defenseless civilians, bulldozing houses, firing machine guns at students in the streets and alleys, and subjecting their families to endless grief.

No day goes by without a new crime.

Palestinian mothers, just like Iranian and American mothers, love their children, and are painfully bereaved by the imprisonment, wounding and murder of their children. What mother wouldn't?

For 60 years, the Zionist regime has driven millions of the inhabitants of Palestine out of their homes. Many of these refugees have died in the Diaspora and in refugee camps. Their children have spent their youth in these camps and are aging while still in the hope of returning to homeland.

You know well that the US administration has persistently provided blind and blanket support to the Zionist regime, has emboldened it to continue its crimes, and has prevented the UN Security Council from condemning it.

Who can deny such broken promises and grave injustices towards humanity by the US administration?

Governments are there to serve their own people. No people wants to side with or support any oppressors. But regrettably, the US administration disregards even its own public opinion and remains in the forefront of supporting the trampling of the rights of the Palestinian people.

Let's take a look at Iraq. Since the commencement of the US military presence in Iraq, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have been killed, maimed or displaced. Terrorism in Iraq has grown exponentially. With the presence of the US military in Iraq, nothing has been done to rebuild the ruins, to restore the infrastructure or to alleviate poverty. The US Government used the pretext of the existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, but later it became clear that that was just a lie and a deception.

Although Saddam was overthrown and people are happy about his departure, the pain and suffering of the Iraqi people has persisted and has even been aggravated.

In Iraq, about one hundred and fifty thousand American soldiers, separated from their families and loved ones, are operating under the command of the current US administration. A substantial number of them have been killed or wounded and their presence in Iraq has tarnished the image of the American people and government.

Their mothers and relatives have, on numerous occasions, displayed their discontent with the presence of their sons and daughters in a land thousands of miles away from US shores. American soldiers often wonder why they have been sent to Iraq.

I consider it extremely unlikely that you, the American people, consent to the billions of dollars of annual expenditure from your treasury for this military misadventure.

Noble Americans,

You have heard that the US administration is kidnapping its presumed opponents from across the globe and arbitrarily holding them without trial or any international supervision in horrendous prisons that it has established in various parts of the world. God knows who these detainees actually are, and what terrible fate awaits them.

You have certainly heard the sad stories of the Guantanamo and Abu-Ghraib prisons. The US administration attempts to justify them through its proclaimed "war on terror." But every one knows that such behavior, in fact, offends global public opinion, exacerbates resentment and thereby spreads terrorism, and tarnishes the US image and its credibility among nations.

The US administration's illegal and immoral behavior is not even confined to outside its borders. You are witnessing daily that under the pretext of "the war on terror," civil liberties in the United States are being increasingly curtailed. Even the privacy of individuals is fast losing its meaning. Judicial due process and fundamental rights are trampled upon. Private phones are tapped, suspects are arbitrarily arrested, sometimes beaten in the streets, or even shot to death.

I have no doubt that the American people do not approve of this behavior and indeed deplore it.

The US administration does not accept accountability before any organization, institution or council. The US administration has undermined the credibility of international organizations, particularly the United Nations and its Security Council. But, I do not intend to address all the challenges and calamities in this message.

The legitimacy, power and influence of a government do not emanate from its arsenals of tanks, fighter aircrafts, missiles or nuclear weapons. Legitimacy and influence reside in sound logic, quest for justice and compassion and empathy for all humanity. The global position of the United States is in all probability weakened because the administration has continued to resort to force, to conceal the truth, and to mislead the American people about its policies and practices.

Undoubtedly, the American people are not satisfied with this behavior and they showed their discontent in the recent elections. I hope that in the wake of the mid-term elections, the administration of President Bush will have heard and will heed the message of the American people.

My questions are the following:

Is there not a better approach to governance?

Is it not possible to put wealth and power in the service of peace, stability, prosperity and the happiness of all peoples through a commitment to justice and respect for the rights of all nations, instead of aggression and war?

We all condemn terrorism, because its victims are the innocent.

But, can terrorism be contained and eradicated through war, destruction and the killing of hundreds of thousands of innocents?

If that were possible, then why has the problem not been resolved?

The sad experience of invading Iraq is before us all.

What has blind support for the Zionists by the US administration brought for the American people? It is regrettable that for the US administration, the interests of these occupiers supersedes the interests of the American people and of the other nations of the world.

What have the Zionists done for the American people that the US administration considers itself obliged to blindly support these infamous aggressors? Is it not because they have imposed themselves on a substantial portion of the banking, financial, cultural and media sectors?

I recommend that in a demonstration of respect for the American people and for humanity, the right of Palestinians to live in their own homeland should be recognized so that millions of Palestinian refugees can return to their homes and the future of all of Palestine and its form of government be determined in a referendum. This will benefit everyone.

Now that Iraq has a Constitution and an independent Assembly and Government, would it not be more beneficial to bring the US officers and soldiers home, and to spend the astronomical US military expenditures in Iraq for the welfare and prosperity of the American people? As you know very well, many victims of Katrina continue to suffer, and countless Americans continue to live in poverty and homelessness.

I'd also like to say a word to the winners of the recent elections in the US:

The United States has had many administrations; some who have left a positive legacy, and others that are neither remembered fondly by the American people nor by other nations.

Now that you control an important branch of the US Government, you will also be held to account by the people and by history.

If the US Government meets the current domestic and external challenges with an approach based on truth and Justice, it can remedy some of the past afflictions and alleviate some of the global resentment and hatred of America. But if the approach remains the same, it would not be unexpected that the American people would similarly reject the new electoral winners, although the recent elections, rather than reflecting a victory, in reality point to the failure of the current administration's policies. These issues had been extensively dealt with in my letter to President Bush earlier this year.

To sum up:

It is possible to govern based on an approach that is distinctly different from one of coercion, force and injustice.

It is possible to sincerely serve and promote common human values, and honesty and compassion.

It is possible to provide welfare and prosperity without tension, threats, imposition or war.

It is possible to lead the world towards the aspired perfection by adhering to unity, monotheism, morality and spirituality and drawing upon the teachings of the Divine Prophets.

Then, the American people, who are God-fearing and followers of Divine religions, will overcome every difficulty.

What I stated represents some of my anxieties and concerns.

I am confident that you, the American people, will play an instrumental role in the establishment of justice and spirituality throughout the world. The promises of the Almighty and His prophets will certainly be realized, Justice and Truth will prevail and all nations will live a true life in a climate replete with love, compassion and fraternity.

The US governing establishment, the authorities and the powerful should not choose irreversible paths. As all prophets have taught us, injustice and transgression will eventually bring about decline and demise. Today, the path of return to faith and spirituality is open and unimpeded.

We should all heed the Divine Word of the Holy Qur'an:

"But those who repent, have faith and do good may receive Salvation. Your Lord, alone, creates and chooses as He will, and others have no part in His choice; Glorified is God and Exalted above any partners they ascribe to Him." (28:67-68)

I pray to the Almighty to bless the Iranian and American nations and indeed all nations of the world with dignity and success.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
President of the Islamic Republic of Iran

Who is more sane? Netanyahu or Ahmadinejad?

PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME WHY THE FORMER HEAD OF MOSSAD AND CURRENT ISRAELI GENERALS DO NOT WANT TO GO TO WAR WITH IRAN?

Raging Capitalist, Why did the Egyptians tear down our flag etc today? Because some idiot here depicted Muhammad in a disrespectful way. Over there any depiction of the "prophet" is forbidden. It is sure to p!ss them off every time and yet some idiots here still do it. Attacking Iran is not in our interests. They are going to have nukes. Plain and simple. The world is not going to help the US stop them. Russia and China keep selling them the technology. Europe is more broke than we are. It is in Israel's and the Saudis interests to stop them. Personally I don't want the US to go the way of many failed empires. Fighting unnecessary war after war. Like the Russian Czar did. We are not going to Pearl Harbor sites that are located all over Iran, in populated, heavily defended and in almost impregnable underground bunkers. If we do there will be a lot of response attacks and blow-back. One response will certainly be a dirty bomb attack in NYC and Tel Aviv. Conventional munitions will not get the job done and we won't use nukes. Even Romney won't do that. Why are we protecting those oil countries from Iran? The US gets only 12% of our oil from the region (Saudia Arabia). Our military is doing exactly the opposite of what we need. Keeping the price of oil artificially high.

Let me get this straight.....

The GOP would have us go to war in Syria......

The GOP wanted boots on the ground in Libya....

The GOP did not want to leave Iraq or Afghanistan...

The GOP now wants war with Iran?

The same GOP that scoffed when Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize?

The oil sanctions have only been in effect for two months. The value of the Rial has dropped dramatically in the last month. Iranian oil tankers are full and going nowhere.

The real solution to Iran's nuclear ambitions is regime change from within. If the sanctions don't get the Iranian people upset enough to start protesting against their government, we have the military power to bring Iran to it's knees, though it won't come easy or cheap.

I understand Mr. Netanyahu's concerns, however rather than verbally attacking your allies, he should place faith in America's word that we will act to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. The President doesn't need to sit down with Netanyahu every time the Prime Minister is inclined to point his finger at him and dictate our policy. It is Netenyahu whom is throwing Obama under a bus, and I believe he's doing it now to help Romney's campaign.

Romney's careless oratory in foreign policy has already alerted the Russians and Putin now says because of the rhetoric, Russia was right to view the missile defense system in Europe as a direct threat.

The majority of GOP fans in these forums are two faced. They seem to blame Obama for lacking the will to attack Iran, just when sanctions are beginning to take a big bite out of Iran. They seek to go to war at a time they keep blaming Obama for the nation's debt problem. By the way, the majority of the national debt was incurred under GOP presidential terms.

give the sanctions a chance, they are working... if Iran remains stubborn to the end and attempts to enrich past 20%, we'll know it, as will the Israelis, and that will be the time to take action. rather than bash Obama, take Netanyahu to task for dictating to America what it must do. If he wishes to take unilateral action, by all means, go for it....

In the long term jax, in the long term. In the short term they raised taxes until the economy picked up and exports increased, Israel exports were worth 4 billion USD in July of 2012. Historically, from 1988 until 2012, Israel Exports averaged 2 billion USD reaching an all time high of 5 billion USD in March of 2011 and a record low of 634.40 Million USD in September of 1988. Which means that the $3 billion we give them in aid is about the same as their exports.

Hey, do you guys remember that time when Obama sent an ambassador to Syria and said that President Assad was a reformer, and just a heck of a good guy?

That was after years of isolation because Syria had for years been sending terrorists over into Iraq in order to kill Americans. But them OBUMMER decided to send an ambassador to Syria after years that the U.S. didn't have one over there, because it would be seen as rewarding Assad's bad behavior.

Of course the Obama administration and the mindless liberal zombies told us that this was just "smart" diplomacy, and that they were going to influence Assad and all sorts of other B#ll$%^&.

Those were the days! Can you remember?

How is that smart diplomacy working out in Syria? 23,000 dead civilians later and still the liberals don't get it!

Of course Obama eventually had to take his ambassador out of there again. That was embarrassing...

Raging,

not using Government is impossible. There is no way not to use public roads and services unless you live in the forest. You pay taxes in equality to your income; that is how it has always been done and will always be done. You do not ask those with the most financial trouble to pay more in taxes for using services that help them stay alive.

Those that are better off and live richer lives help those at the bottom of society that are not and do not; that is the American way, it is the Christian way, hell it is even the civil way. There has never been a modern civil culture that has cannibalized it's weak (talking human culture now).

The GOP did not want to leave Iraq or Afghanistan...

The GOP now wants war with Iran?

The same GOP that scoffed when Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize?

Ray, the dems VOTED for Iraq, and Obama pulled our troops out on Bush's schedule, so I'm not sure what you're talking about with Iraq.

Obama's kept us in Afghanastan, again, not sure what you're getting at.

I also don't see where "the GOP wants war with Iran" either...I think the GOP is more interested in why Obama appears to be avoiding Netanyahu on this very real concern of his. Interestingly, though, Hillary did say we'd "obliterate" Iran if they attacked Israel:

http://www.wsws.org/articles/2008/apr2008/iran-a24.shtml

And yeah, we scoffed when Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize, as I'm sure a lot of the rest of the world is now, too. To claim he deserved that in what is tantamount to just not being Bush is pretty silly.

Republicans seem to think, in every case, that everybody else in the world matters more than Americans.

Great...the democrats with the same intelligence didn't know, but the republicans did. It's so funny to watch the left trying to rewrite history. Especially when it goes all the way back to Bill Clinton:

"One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line."

    President Clinton, Feb. 4, 1998.

"If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program."

    President Clinton, Feb. 17, 1998.

"Iraq is a long way from [here], but what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face."

    Madeline Albright, Feb 18, 1998.

"He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times since 1983."

Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Adviser, Feb, 18, 1998

Still want to embarrass yourself with revisionist history? Tell me, where have YOU been?

Hey Jax, we were mislead with bad intel that Bush kept pushing as a reason to go to war. Also, we didn't end Iraq on Bush's schedule. The deadline was insisted on by the Iraqis' after Obama's campaign pledged to end the war. They used Obama's timetable and Al Maliki set the timetable, not Bush.

Obama has set the timetable to leave Afghanistan now that Osama Bin Laden is dead. Now we can say, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. The Taliban are no longer in power... Would you have advocated for a pull out before Osama was captured or killed?

We have pampered Netanyahu and have had many meetings including our SECDEF and SECSTATE, and other high end administration officials. Sitting down with Netanyahu now, after all his bluster and rhetoric, would give the appearance that Obama is being dictated to, something the GOP would love to see happen. I for one am glad he is showing spine on this issue.

Wow, where to begin? Obama has no military record, Biden got five, yes, count 'em, five deferements from Vietnam so you should probably think about calling Romney out for not serving in the military.

As far as the 1%, well Obama makes more than twice the minimum amount necessary to be in the 1%, and ironically, 7 of the richest people in Congress are democrats, so the democrats are hardly the party that's "in touch" with the common man.

How many years has Russia had nukes pointed at the U.S., yet you do not see us whining, crying, throwing a fit and starting a war with them for not reason. We have nukes pointed at them too. I bet you have nukes ALREADY pointed at Iran. Do as I say not as do...

What has North Korea done with its nukes? How many times has it issued threats and ignored international "red-lines"? Iran is SUCH a threat...when they only want the SAME weapons you have. If someone with a gun is bullying you, YOU WOULD WANT A GUN TOO.

The ex-head of Mossad and an Israel citizen BETTER KNOW THE FING 1967 borders. IF HE DID NOT THAT WOULD PROVE HOW STUPID HE REALLY IS. Why not ask him a question about U.S. borders and see if he knows the answer if he is such a great "obviously superior foreign policy leader like Netanyahu"? What has Israel done for the U.S. as an ally? NOTHING. Obama do not want to waste his time since he already knows WTF Netanyahu wants. HMMM, what could Netanyahu want to talk to me about... hmm I wonder.

JaX, The Democrats voted for Iraq based on false information about weapons that bush and the republicans knew didn't exist. Where have you been?

“If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction program.”
    President Clinton, Feb. 17, 1998

“Iraq is a long way from USA but, what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face.”
    Madeline Albright, Feb 18, 1998

“He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times since 1983.”
Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Adviser, Feb, 18, 1998

“Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process.”
Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), Dec. 16, 1998

“Hussein has .. chosen to spend his money on building weapons of mass destruction and palaces for his cronies.”
Madeline Albright, Clinton Secretary of State, Nov. 10, 1999

“He has ignored the mandated of the United Nations and is building weapons of mass destruction and the means of delivering them.”
Sen. Carl Levin (D, MI), Sept. 19, 2002

“We know that he has stored secret supplies of biological and chemical weapons throughout his country.”
    Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002

“We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction.”
Sen. Ted Kennedy (D, MA), Sept. 27, 2002

“I will be voting to give the President of the United States the authority to use force– if necessary– to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security.”
    Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Oct. 9, 2002

“There is unmistakable evidence that Saddam Hussein is working aggressively to develop nuclear weapons and will likely have nuclear weapons within the next five years … We also should remember we have always underestimated the progress Saddam has made in development of weapons of mass destruction.”
Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D, WV), Oct 10, 2002

“He has systematically violated, over the course of the past 11 years, every significant UN resolution that has demanded that he disarm and destroy his chemical and biological weapons, and any nuclear capacity. This he has refused to do” Rep.
    Henry Waxman (D, CA), Oct. 10, 2002

“In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program.
He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including al Qaeda members. It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons.”
Sen. Hillary Clinton (D, NY), Oct 10, 2002

“We are in possession of what I think to be compelling evidence that Saddam Hussein has, and has had for a number of years, a developing capacity for the production and storage of weapons of mass destruction.”
Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL), Dec. 8, 2002

“Without question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation … And now he is miscalculating America’s response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction… So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real …”
    Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Jan.23.2003

So, for almost 5 years the Liberals were gung-ho to attack Iraq and its weapons of mass destruction. Two of those years were during the Clinton administration where the discussion about WMD’s began, NOT by George Bush.

Of course, as usual, all the Democrats were against it AFTER they were for it.

Also, we didn't end Iraq on Bush's schedule. The deadline was insisted on by the Iraqis' after Obama's campaign pledged to end the war. They used Obama's timetable and Al Maliki set the timetable, not Bush.

    Wrong, yet again:

Thats right. After 60 years and $7 Trillion US tax payer dollars later......its time for israel to start paying its own bills and fighting its own wars.

That figure is completely fabricated. You havn't got a clue what you're talking about. You're merely spewing out garbage, rhetoric, hate and ignorance... or is it stupidity.

And whilst I too do not wish to give the Nation of Israel (cough...gag, It's Palestine) anymore $upport, it's ignorant assclowns like you that try to make a point with completely bogus numbers, that just makes me sick. You're a typical Liberal, and you've already lost all credibility and voice as an intellect on this subject matter, by your own stupid will to try and force your point of view.

The US has been "Directly" surving up between $3,000,000,000 and $10,000,000,000 ea. year, with some exception, such as in 2003 when Israel received well over $100,000,000,000. So, even if the US had directly contributed $100,000,000,000/yr. (completely untrue, and only a example to show the stupidity of your comment), since the beginning of the Nation of Israel (cough... gag, It's Palestine), that would make Israel 70 years old, but Nation of Isreal is only 65 yrs. old. So, it's like I said, you're full of shyt Cracker Boy.

I am so sick of Israel trying to push us into war with Iran. Let them go to war with Iran, I say go for it beebee. We have already been there long enough. Its time we put America first, We have rebuilt Iraq when there oil was going to pay for the war and pay to rebuild that country. Dick Cheney told us it would. The Rep's have run up the dept and then blamed it on Obama. The Dem's have told Israel that they can not just do what ever they want and think we will back them up. The Rep's think we have to kiss Israels Butts and that is not who we are. It is up to us to decided when to go to war with someone. I think the only reason we went into Iraq was because that is what Saudi Arabia wanted. Yes they are our so called friends, But we know the Saudi's were behind 911. The money came from there, and most of the people of 911 were Saudi's. We need to stop starting wars for other country's The only reason we were hit on 911 is because we always stand with Israel no matter what. And one other thing. OBL said all he had to do is drive the cost of oil over $100 a barrel and it would destroy the American economic, and he did and it did. The Greed of the oil company's did the rest. The Saudi King said the cost of oil was not that high for gas prices in the US to be so high. The Speculators ran the price up. That and only that caused the mess we are in right now. Pure old American greed.

One strike in Israel by Iran would also destroy Iran. You are asking us to assume that the Iranians are complete morons who don't realize that.

Even IF Iran managed to get a nuclear weapon, there is no place it could use it. Israel has enough weapons to turn Iran into a nuclear wasteland for the next 10,000 years, and that is exactly what would happen if Iran tried to attack Israel. The Iranians know it. The Israelis know it. And we know it.

Netanyahu is not worried about defense in the least. He wants to see the destruction of Iran, that is why we are told all the weird things about how Iranians hate their own children and want to see them turned into radioactive dust just so that they can take out Israelis.

Republicans in the US are idiots. As idiotic as the Democrats.

The only non-stupid voters and politicians are paying attention to those who actually work on either side of the aisle, not the ones who drive nails straight through their asses in the name of 'taking a stand' (which isn't taking a stand at all, because then they would produce results. Its actually being a 'tantrum throwing baby).

Iran should be bombed, because that is what they are asking, and Israel has expressed an interest in doing so, so they should. Israel is so interested in doing it, they should stop crying for help from the US. And Republican morons who say on one hand we should stay out, and on the other, we should back Israel, are just as dumb as a person who can't add 2+2. Sometimes the Dems are as dumb, but this one goes to the Repukes.

Obama doesn't have time for Israel but he does have time for an appearance on the David Letterman show.

Breaking news on CNN saying that an American citizen was killed in Libya today.

Egypt citizens storm a US Embassy and tear down a US Flag and replace the flag with a Muslim black flag.

    Obama says nothing.

Oblunder is too busy to meet with Netanyahu to discuss a potential nuclear attack on Israel that could set off a war to rival that of WWII... Yes, our POTUS is too busy "campaigning" to discuss nuclear war! Too busy to assist Israel in her defense. Too busy to consider how an Iranian strike on Israel would lead to world chaos. And this is our 'President'? Are you kidding me? This narcisstic snob, this marxist traitor needs to find his way back to community organizing... He is either totally inept as a leader of the modern world, and another 4 years will not be sufficient for him to earn his degree in international leadership, or, he has a hidden agenda to drive this country into further turmoil.

Roy, the problem is that Israel want s to get us involved in another war and Obama doesn't want it so we can balance the deficit, 1/3 rd of which comes from bush's wars. have you seen what our wars have gotten us in the Middle East. Afghanistan- killing of Americans by training soldiers. Libya a riot and one dead at our embassy today. Egypt, the embassy attacked and the flag burned. We are not the world''s policeman even though you and the republicans think we are. We just can't afford it!

Loved all your quotes of Dem's. Only one big problem, each of them were quoting from statements issued by the Bush admin. Dickey and Donney were part of the group from Ronnie Ray-guns term that gave the WMD (gas ) to old Madass in Iraq. That was the gas Saddam used on the Kurds, it was meant to be used against Iran. As proof of WMD Bush and company sited British intel. Only problem was Britten got its intel from us, ours was proved FALSE!

Don't forget old Ya-who does this every four years to influence our elections. Israel year after year takes land it does not own and gives it to settlers. It would be like me bringing an assault force to your house, bulldoze it and take the property for myself. You don't get time to move and my assault force will shoot you if you protest. This is what Israel does time and time again and then we (The US of A) are supose to pat them on the back tell them good job and give them another Billion Dollar check.

By the way your RED NECK is showing.

clwyd-2621393 "Roy, the problem is that Israel want s to get us involved in another war and Obama doesn't want it so we can balance the deficit"

I don't think anyone really wants a war - least of all Israel, but they don't see any actions by Obama that are likely to make Iran halt their pursuit of a nuclear weapon which would create an existential threat to Israel's survival. Obama has been trying his approach for almost 4 years now, and Iran is four years closer to having the weapon. The truth is that Israel does not expect Obama to stop Iran, so they may have to do it themselves.

As for 'balancing the Deficit', you can't be serious. The Deficits under Obama are expected to be $5.333 Trillion for his first 4 years, which is 6.5 times as much as Bush's Deficits of $820 Billion over HIS first 4 years. Obama said he would 'cut the Deficits in half' during his first term, but they are bigger than ever.

I have yet to see Obama even begin to suggest anything to 'balance the Deficit' - he keeps calling for more deficit spending, and his people call the Republicans 'terrorists' for not giving him a blank check.

Some of the post here amaze me. To the one that stated that Korea has nukes and have not used them, so Iran could too and be put under the same control as Korea shows a total lack of understanding of what the difference between the two countries are. One country is a politically radical country that has a political ideology that tells them this is the best way for them and all other countries to live under, but if they get destroyed there is no future nor can they spread their ideology. Iran on the other hand is ruled by a radical Islamic element that does not care about life or death, they do not care if they will be unable to spread radical Islamic ideology because under their belief system if they can destroy Israel (or the Zionist usurpers as they like to say) they know because of prophesy that the great Imam will return and force the rest of the world to convert or die. Unlike communism which has no belief in the after life, the radical Islamic people believe that if they die a martyr then they will be set up for life. So to put the two countries into the same basket makes no sense.

The rest of you that think it would be a wonderful thing to see Israel go at Iran by themselves also shows your lack of forward thinking. What are we going to do if Iran does a massive attack against Israel with missiles both from themselves and from Lebynon, what if the missiles have biological weapons? Does anyone think that if one of these land in Jeruselem or Tel Aviv that Israel will have any other choice but to respond in kind with Nucliuer weapons? What will happen to the price of oil if there is a nuclier war, and can our economy handle such a drastic downturn on imports if the whole region blows up over this?

In the end it would be the start of WW3 if we do not come against Iran, turn our back and there is a great likelihood that the situation would rapidly escalate out of control. And for you that wish to yell, how would you feel if Mexico was developing Nukes and had a religious mindset that to use them against us not matter the cost would bless them now and give them eternal rewards, would you advise to stand down and let them go ahead and develop the weapons with the hope that suddenly they would have a change of heart? We all know the answer, you would demand action. So why are you so against another country acting in self defense or in a preemptive strike to prevent a nation that has openly called for the destruction of Israel from obtaining weapons that would put their own survival at risk?

    HUH????

Let me get this straight, you're telling me that all those Democrats went on blind faith and just went on what Rumsfeld and Cheney did 12 years earlier?

Clinton (Hillary and Billy Bob), Nanny Piglosi, Madeleine Albright (Clintons Secretary of State) and Sandy Berger (Clintons National Security Adviser) didn’t use any newer intelligence from 1988 until 2000 (when the first 5 quotes originated) when their terms were up?

Psssssst, Bush wasn’t president until 2000!

The quotes AREN’T for old WMD’s, they were talking about programs, development and BUILDING WMD’s.

Now, I can understand Clinton not having a clue, we all know he was too busy to govern while he was getting his knob polished by his 22 yo skank Monica nine times. But you think the rest of his administration was that incompetent they didn’t use their own intel?

    Good post.

The problem with Liberals/Progressives is that they think we can just isolate ourselves from the rest of the world and keep borrowing and printing more and more money for their dysfunctional Keynesian economic model. Their delusion is to just keep taking from those that have and keep redistributing to those that don't until everyone either runs out of money or tells us to take a hike.

Their sacrosanct entitelments and social programs are crippling us to the point of insolvency, so their new bogeyman is the dreaded Military Industrial Complex. Granted it needs to be pared down but not today as the middle East is a powderkeg. As the main supply of oil would be shut down, our and the global economy would crash harder than ten Great Depressions.

But then again we can all just buy a Chevy Volt and hope it doesn't incinerate us.

When are you people going to realize this? Iran and all the muslim countries has wanted to destroy Israel for sometime now and the only reason they can give is because they don't like Jews. Here's a little excerpt:

President Barack Obama weighed in on the alleged plot Thursday, saying it is "not just a dangerous escalation, this is part of a pattern of dangerous and reckless behavior" by the Iranian government.

Obama called it a sign that Iran has "been outside of accepted norms of international behavior for far too long" and said the United States will work with international partners and will take steps to ensure that Iran "pays a price."

For some reason Romney felt it necessary to bring Sheldon Adelson along with him to Israel after his unsuccessful attempts to provoke a war with England (the second part of that statement is sarcasm for the halfwits among you).

The SAME Sheldon Adelson who is under investigation for violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act for bribing government officials in Macau.

The SAME Sheldon Adelson who promised to spend an "unlimited" amount of money to help elect Romney and who is an ardent Zionist (not to mention who would save a couple of billion a year in taxes under Romney's tax plan)

It's not much of a stretch to imagine that if enough of Adelson's cash was on the table that Netanyahu would agree to publicly try to draw the United States into committing ourselves into another Middle East war and attempt to influence the outcome of the election as long as Romney would agree to do just that if he were elected.

Netanyahu's Likud party is nothing but a foreign branch of the NeoCon wing of the Republican Party and is only in power as part of a coalition government. The majority of the Israeli military and government officials, the majority of the Israeli public and the overwhelming majority of American Jews are opposed to a first strike against Iran under the current circumstances.

When Obama wrote Dreams of My Father, it showed his fathers passionate belief in the destruction of the United States as a way to help the Moslem world! He also wrote that he held his father’s beliefs close in his own heart!

Obama has went out of his way to promote Moslem interests in the world up to and with the us of America's military might to place the Moslem brotherhood in a position of power in different countries! He did this knowing that once in power they would be against us!

If one takes a good look at Obama's actions it seems quite clear that Obama would do anything to drag this nation down.

Obama surrounded himself with people who hated our freedoms and our way of life while living off from its bounty! His preacher was a former, so he claimed, Moslem cleric! Who claimed God dammed America! Others, who advised him, were terrorist, like Bill Ayres. His greatest mentors were known communist!

When you examine his life and his passions up to this point, it’s not hard to see what he is trying to do! The destruction of this country is his number one goal!

None of these countries with the bomb have ever done squat with it.

A solution to this problem would be to have a neutral 3rd party country like say India or Brazil "guarantee" Iranian sovereignty in exchange for FULL access to all Iranian sites at any time, not this mickey mouse thing they have goin on right now.

Let the U.S. and Iran come up with a short list each of ten countries. I bet it would work, but is there the will to do it?

@Pedestrian-in-SF - you sir are truly ignorant of geopolitical issues. Israel DID NOT get involved because WE did not want them involved for OBVIOUS REASONS. For Israel to have become involved would have solicited sympathy from other muslim nations and eroded the frail alliances we set up.

Just like back in Desert Shield and Desert Storm when Iraq launched those scud missiles into Israel. Israel had every right to counter attack, but did not, because WE ASKED THEM NOT TO. We sent patriot missile batteries and targeted any and all land based and mobile scud launchers that even moved to a position to strike Israel.

Keep in mind, especially for IndependentinSD that the UN Partition Plan in 1947 included land for the Palestinians and the Jews. In fact, the partition plan favored Palestinians, granted them more land than what was proposed for Israel. It wasn't Israel that launched that attack in 1948, but sure as hell was Lebannon, Jordan, Syria, and Egypt. Israel prevailed and as a result took the captured land. In 1967, the 6 day war, saw the same perpetrators as in 1947 scheming to attack Israel again. Israel, instead of waiting to be pounced on again, launched attacks North and South, capturing the Sinai, the Golan Heights, and the West Bank and Gaza. Jordan formally acknowledged the existance of Israel and they have lived in peace since. Egypt did the same in 48, and was given back the land in the Sinai that was captured. Also, my uninformed friends in the Road Map for Peace, Israel abandoned settlements and evacuated entire communities from the west bank and Gaza. But was that enough? NOPE sure wasn't. Instead what they got was militants firing Quaam Missiles from Gaza into Israel. In 2006, militants abducted an Israeli soldier, so what did Israel do. They re-entered Gaza and built the West Bank Barrier. So don't blame Israel for defending itself. They were quite happy with the land granted in 1947. It was the Arabs that started the fight that Israel finished (BY ITSELF - Without US TROOPS).

The braindead rhetoric claiming Israel is starting the trouble is about as foolish as forgetting the capturing of the US EMBASSY in Tehran, in which OUR CITIZENS were held captive for 444 days. And how soon we seem to forget that while Iran certainly may not have openly started any wars since 1804, they have certainly instigated, had proxies, and supported elements that have.

It is true these people in Persia and the Middle East have been at war for thousands of years. And it has NEVER been a result of anything other than Religeon. And you have to ask yourself 1 simple question. If your neighbor is threatening to burn your house down, do you wait until you smell gasoline and see a match, or do you do something about it before hand...

I guess we will have to borrow some more from China to pay for Israel's war with Iran. Folks wake up!! We are broke. If we must and only if we absolutly must... a surgical strike is about all we might be able to afford. So give the sanctions a chance to work. If Israel cannot wait then they are a free country.

If Israel goes at it without USA< it wont be a surgical strike, it would get really messy.

Also, if the country was broke, we would be seeing results on our dinner tables, instead of just on TV.

Israel wants to go to war with Iran.... let them be on condition that we stop giving financial aid. Their economy is in much better shape than the US, we should be using that money to build the USA instead of other nations.

The USA is in financial bind right now, companies scale back expenses and salaries to keep the company afloat and employees working. The USA can also do that with our foreign contributions.

Only the brain damaged fail to see that Obama is not Israel's friend and he would abandon them to their fate and wouldn't mind at all if they were overrun by the muslim hordes. He, of course, would issue the usual politically correct protestations over the slaughter of Israelis but wouldn't lift a finger in their defense.

However, Obama will become incensed should the Israelis take it upon themselves to exercise their right of self defense and only the upcoming elections and his need for the Jewish vote temper his open distain for Netanyahu and Israel.

Since Netanyahu has no backbone, evidently Israel can't deal with it by themselves, even though they should.

The constant threat to strike Iran without actually doing it for the past many months weakens Israel, it is sad to watch.

If the people of Israel want American support before attacking Iran, that may be their way pushing back the wild ass hawks in their government. If the people thought Iran had to be stopped, like yesterday, they wouldn't care about the U.S. . They have handled things in their neighborhood themselves after all. So I am taking it that they ( the people) are not that crazy about attacking Iran right now.

Setting a deadline is brinkmanship. If the government of Israel wants to go to the brink, that's up to them. We have enough on our plates right now.

Obama wants iran to have nuclear weapons. He wants iran to blast israel. obama doesn't want the US to have a foothold in the middle east via israel. This would increase the middle easts chances in the event of war against the US. Why would obama want us to have an advantage by having an ally in the region? obamas own book states he'll stand with the muslims come hell or high water.

I can't believe the US has a communist muslim for a president and people by in to his bull@!$%#.

Israel needs to just go a head and cut losoe on iran and any other middle eastern country that gives it grief and get this ball rolling so we can start illiminating obamas friends. obama showed his true colors when he went on his muslim apology tour back in 2009.

The last time we went to war for israel was with Iraq all because of faked WMD intel from israel that Bush bought hook, line and sinker

So did obama. He endorsed the whole damn thing in the senate. Now he back peddles showing how two faced and what a hypocrit he really is.

obamas true policy and agenda and to bring the US to its knees at all cost. Watch if he gets another term in office. He's going to start his attack on the private sector freezing and lowering wages on the middle and lower classes of people. He's a real man of the people alright! Flood the jobs markets with low wage illgal workers, then bring our wages in line with that of those illegals. Watch and see!

Good point Rufus... what most people outside of politics do not understand is an ultimatum. If our leaders were foolish enough to issue one, and Iran crosses the line, we have no other option but to attack. By not issuing an ultimatum, we have the upper hand and can attack anytime we think it's in the world's best interest.

The President is on the right course with this issue. Never should a president bow down and allow another country to dictate terms of our policy. That is leadership.....

I'll tell you what, Iran is no pushover like Iraq. So if you want a war, get ready for allot of blood and lost lives. I doubt very much you would even be patriotic enough to go fight. There would be a very good chance we wouldn't win! Where is the draft when you need it. If people had to serve they wouldn't be so fast to get us in a war.

What the hell is really going on here? Are you kidding me? World tensions grow, possible war looms, and Obama snubs the Prime Minister of one of our biggest allies in the mideast. To campaign.....??? I don't get it at all.

"The White House has brushed aside an offer by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to meet with President Obama later this month. The apparent snub came despite a state of heightened alert over Iran’s nuclear program and the possibility of Israeli action.

Sources said Netanyahu, though he plans to be in New York City during his brief stay, was offering to travel to D.C. to make the meeting happen. However, the White House apparently said Obama is in the middle of a feverish campaign schedule -- would make a meeting difficult.

The turn-down comes amid increasing international anxiety about Iran’s nuclear program. The U.N. reportedly has found new intelligence showing Iran is moving toward nuclear weapon capability.

But the exchange between the White House and the prime minister’s office is the most recent in what is seen as a cool, if not strained, relationship between Obama and Netanyahu, despite Israel being considered one of the United State’s closest allies."

I've always had the impression that strategic relationship were to benefit both sides. It's sheer madness that we keep supporting a Nation that has refused to bargain on the one basic issue that keeps Palistinians and neighboring countries from making peace with them, which is giving back lands gained in a war that was waged over fifty years ago.

Why do they continue to build new settlements on the West Bank when they know that it results in more conflict, not less.

Why on earth would we want anyone else when his greatness (Obama) is doing such a fantastic job in the Middle East.

Yes, the above was sarcasm. I don't know for how much longer the US can stand to have this incompetent loser in office. (Now is the time for the Obama supporters to yell "but he got Osama!!" especially since Obama used the intelligence gathered from the previous administration and using methods he decried during his 2008 campaign. I never thought I would ever see a president that would make Bush even remotely start to look good and given how awful Bush was this is a sad sign indeed.

You know other presidents have managed to pull things together in the middle east without war ---- using something called diplomacy.

Obama is in over his head if the event does not involve photo opportunities and people fawning over him. I have no idea if Romney will do any better but I am sure he can do no worse. I am not sure what is worse the utter incompetence of the Obama administration or the Obama supporters yelling approval and worship no matter what he does. I wish I could retract my vote for Obama in 2008.

I keep thinking if we had Hillary/Bill in 2008 we would not be dealing with all of this mess now. I kept hoping Obama would step down for whatever reason (any face saving reason) and let Hillary run in 2012.

What you fail to realize or acknowledge is all of the efforts that have gone into building a coalition against Iran and the covert action that has delayed Iran's progress to allow sanctions time to begin to bite....

As for Iran not attacking Israel, RonB might want to do a bit of research into the 12th Imam, or the hidden prophet. Ahmadinejad has repeatedly spoken of this. They believe that if they provoke a large enough war, or disaster, the 12th Imam and Jesus will descend from heaven and help them defeat their enemies, and Islam will rule the world for 1000 years at the side of Christ. I believe for this specific reason, Iran would indeed make good on it's repeated threats of destroying Israel.

And therein lies the problem. All of us sane, rational people can sit around behind the comfort of our computers and protected by thousands of miles of oceans and say "gee, this Ammadinnerjacket guy would be nutzo to use a nuclear bomb, deeerrrrrrr." Well yes, that's the point. He is nutzo, and would absolutely use a nuclear weapon if he is able to build one. His regime has publicly vowed to wipe Israel off the map (not a threat, a promise). His leader, the Iyatola, has said the same, many times, publicly. His regime openly supports anti-Israel militant groups with financial aid and weapons. This is not a situation where logic and reason will prevail.

Not to spark more debate, but let's consider something totally possible here - but first, let's kind of agree of a few FACTS.

FACTS - Shi'ites and Sunnis are constantly at each other's throats. We see this in "sectarian" violence. We see it in power struggles involving all the middle eastern countries and the way they deal with each other. I think we know this to be a fact.

Fact - Radicalism and extremist views are flagrantly tossed around in the name of religeon. We know there are very few "moderates" in the muslim faith. Within the hierarcy of the Muslim faith, we know and have heard that anyone who is NOT a muslim is an infidel. I think we can all agree on this.

Fact - The region has been at war with each other for thousands of years, stemming from religeous edicts to fanatacism to asymmetrical type warfare. Provences include warlords and elders often waging battles against each other (thus the birth of what we know today as the Taliban). Read your world history concerning the rise of the Taliban if you doubt this truth.

Now what can we deduce, if we use history as a guide. Well we know the US and USSR had a very protracted nuclear arms race. We know Pakistan and India both engaged in a nuclear arms race. We know given the historical evidence, we can expect a nuclear arms race in the middle east should Iran (Shi'ites) produce a bomb. The Sunni's would likely need or desire to follow suit. We know governments in that region are overthrown (Egypt, Tunisa, Yemen, and Syria in the midst of its own civil war) We know, to the victors goes the spoils of war. So do we really want to see a nuclear arms rush in the middle east? Especially given some of the Rhetoric coming from Iran and it's anti-west stance. Do we want to see radical fundamentalists with their fingers on the trigger of a nuclear weapon?

Now we can argue about whether or not Iran is wanting nuke energy for peaceful purposes or is really trying to covertly build a bomb. The issue then becomes one of trust, taking them at thier word. But can we trust Iran? If history has taught us anything it is NOT TO TRUST IRAN. And why should Israel, whether or not the intended message from Iran was either Israel to be wiped off the map, or the Regime in Israel to be wiped off the map, really is a question of semmantics, considering that the israeli government is Israel, just like OUR GOVERNMENT is THE US. The people of this country don't make the decisions, but suffer the consequences of the decisions that are made. Terrorists, enemies of our country in times of war, don't give a damn whether they are killing soldiers, government people who started the garbage, or innocent civilians, as we are all considered AMERICA. So the same holds true for Israel, for ANY COUNTRY. The national identity of a country is the government which leads them.

So I would submit this as a topic of thought and consideration. Whether or not the fight is Israel's or not, whether we believe they should go it alone or intervene, ultimately do we trust Iran, especially given Russian and Chinese opposition to stricter sanctions? Isn't it seemingly clear that Iran is just another in a long list of proxies for battles between the bigger states? Just like the Russian invasion of Afghanistan, and our support of the mujahadeen (to become Al Qaeda)? Just like our support of IRAQ during the Iran/Iraq War? The only difference is NOW we are talking about nuclear material capable in small amounts to cause widespread devistation, whether or not it is weaponized, and being produced by a country that already refers to us as THE GREAT SATAN. Just consider that...

Here's where you lost me, Will: We know there are very few "moderates" in the muslim faith.

"We" don't know any such thing. Where's your data?

What are there, a billion Muslims in the world, give or take? What percentage of them have killed, or advocated killing, or burned a flag, or advocated burning it?

Come on, get your head out of your own religious intolerance.

Americans are tired of war. While we will, of course, honor our commitment to Israel's safety, why should we rush to wage war with Iran? It will be ugly, prolonged and result in trillions of dollars spent and the loss of precious American lives. I am glad that Obama is making sure that other methods of containing Iran's nuclear capacity fail before making such a huge step. We can't afford to be the world's policeman any longer. We should have left Saddam alone....he intimidated the Iranians!

None of which explain why Clinton and friends thought Sadaam had weapons. Are you ever going to address that, or are you just going to laughably claim that only the republicans knew something the democrats didn't...and as far back as early 1998?

"One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line."

Oh yes!!! They had them when the democrats thought they had them, but later, when Bush was president the democrats STILL thought they had them, they didn't? Right!!! Sadaam kicked the inspectors out in 1998, but those same inspectors confirmed there were no weapons after that?? How did they do that when they had been expelled, exactly? Oh that's right! 1441 was around BECAUSE Saddam wouldn't let them in!

Then how do you explain all these democrats saying Saddam DID have WMD's in 2002, you know, when Bush was president?

"We begin with the common belief that Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and a threat to the peace and stability of the region. He has ignored the mandate of the United Nations and is building weapons of mass destruction and the means of delivering them."

"The last UN weapons inspectors left Iraq in October1998. We are confident that Saddam Hussein retains some stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons, and that he has since embarked on a crash course to build up his chemical and biological warfare capabilities. Intelligence reports indicate that he is seeking nuclear weapons..."
Sen. Robert Byrd (D, WV), Oct. 3, 2002.

                    Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Oct. 9, 2002.

"There is unmistakable evidence that Saddam Hussein is working aggressively to develop nuclear weapons and will likely have nuclear weapons within the next five years . We also should remember we have alway s underestimated the progress Saddam has made in development of weapons of mass destruction."
Sen. Jay Rockerfeller (D, WV), Oct 10, 2002,

"He has systematically violated, over the course of the past 11 years, every significant UN resolution that has demanded that he disarm and destroy his chemical and biological weapons, and any nuclear capacity. This he has refused to do."

"We are in possession of what I think to be compelling evidence that Saddam Hussein has, and has had for a number of years, a developing capacity for the production and storage of weapons of mass destruction. "[W]ithout question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime ... He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation. And now he has continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction ... So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real ...
                    Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Jan. 23. 2003.

Darn those pesky facts! Wow looks like the dems were certain Saddam had weapons in 2002 and 2003, huh?

Too many people believed their lies! Too many lives were lost.

That's why Cheney and Skooter Libby sacrificed and outed Wilson's wife Valerie Plame, a CIA operative specializing in that area, because she sent Wilson to investigate and Wilson in a NY Times article stated that the yellow cake story was not true. By then.....we were at war.

Why don't any of you revisionist-history-rewriters answer this question? EVERYONE (including the dems) believed in the years that Saddam wouldn't let the UN inspectors do their jobs, that he was developing WMDs. Funny how the left wants to forget these inconvenient facts.

Anti Israeli? That is a compliment. Israel is nothing more than a parasite, much like a welfare cheat. We have posters here telling us how Israel has this great, successful economy, but they are always scheming to receive more American aid, loans, military hardware and for America to attack Israel's perceived enemies.

Jewish American Congressmen and women, such as Eric Cantor, Steny Hoyer and Barbara Boxer are continuously writing bills for more Israel aid and to place sanctions on Iran. These people are working hard for Israel in order to scam more money out of the US treasury.

They are in both parties, in order to hedge their bets. Israel's goal is to get as much as they can from America, without giving anything in return. Only a fool would allow us to be treated the way Israel treats America. Hopefully, Obama will tell Netanyahu he hasn't got the time or the inclination for a meeting.

Of course, the last time an American president defied Israel, he was assasinated. It is too bad Jack Ruby, a Jew, killed Oswald before he could talk. Lyndon Johnson, a closet Jew and an ardent Zionist, was waiting in the wings to be president and give his full support to Israel.

                      http://lennybendavid.com/2008/05/lyndon-johnsons-historical-connection.html

                      http://www.jweekly.com/article/full/36262/friend-ally-savior-revealing-lbj-s-jewish-ties/

                      Research into
Johnson's personal history indicates that he inherited his concern for the
Jewish people from his family. His aunt Jessie Johnson Hatcher, a major
influence on LBJ, was a member of the Zionist Organization of America. As a
young boy, Lyndon watched his politically active grandfather "Big Sam"
and father "Little Sam" seek clemency for Leo Frank, the Jewish
victim of a blood libel in Atlanta. Frank was lynched by a mob in 1915, and the
Ku Klux Klan in Texas threatened to kill the Johnsons. Johnson's speechwriter
later stated, "Johnson often cited Leo Frank's lynching as the source of
his opposition to both anti-Semitism and isolationism."

Lyndon Johnson’s maternal ancestors, the Huffmans, apparently migrated to
Frederick, Maryland from Germany sometime in the mid-eighteenth century. Later
they moved to Bourbon, Kentucky and eventually settled in Texas in the
                      mid-to-late nineteenth century.10

According to Jewish law, if a person’s mother is
Jewish, then that person is automatically Jewish, regardless of the father’s
ethnicity or religion. The facts indicate that both of Lyndon Johnson’s
great-grandparents, on the maternal side, were Jewish. These were the
grandparents of Lyndon’s mother, Rebecca Baines.11
Their names were John S. Huffman and Mary Elizabeth Perrin.12
John Huffman’s mother was Suzanne Ament, a common Jewish name. Perrin is also a
                      common Jewish name.

Huffman and Perrin had a daughter, Ruth Ament Huffman,13
                      who married Joseph Baines14
and together they had a daughter, Rebekah Baines,15
Lyndon Johnson’s mother. The line of Jewish mothers can be traced back three
generations in Lyndon Johnson’s family tree. There is little doubt that he was
                      Jewish.

Meanwhile, today in Egypt they stormed our embassy, ripped up the US flag and replaced it with a black one bearing an Islamic inscription. At the same time Obama is negotiating a deal with Egypt's ruling Muslim Brotherhood to forgive Egypt from paying US back between $1 and $3 billion in loans.

We have forgiven many loans, including such countries as France for WWII rebuild. They, France isn't a third world country. They own all kinds of interests here in the states. Perhaps your too young to remember De Gaulles remarks about returning this and his atitude towards the US and our sacrifices for their country.

As above if Israel can't help us in other regional conflicts, they have no business giving such rediculous allegations as the president is snubbing the prime minister, or expecting more from us. Let them deal with this issue if they want to start a war.

Get it together folks! Before Israel can attack Iran, the US will have secure an agreement with all the other Middle Eastern countries that they will not attack Israel in return. Most of these countries have no relationship with Israel already, so Israel could not do this for itself. Even though some of them hate Iran but the will sooner join with Iran than Israel. So Bibby had better not be in such a hurry to go to war or he might be at war with the whole Middle East.

Sunni and Shea hate each other just as much as they hate Jews, and some of the Sunni governments just might be scared enough of Iran to work with Israel.

You might want to check on Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates.

Obama is smart not to meet with Netanyahu at this time. He has sent many members of his administration to Israel to allay their fears, convince them we have their back, and even include them in our war plans should it come to that. Meeting with Netanyahu now would only serve the appearance that Obama is allowing another leader to dictate his policy.

Netanyahu and Romney go way back, college days. Could it be Netanyahu is playing a game of brinkmanship to aide Romney's aspirations? One has to wonder...

                          Israel is tired of waiting.

                          And justly so.

For years Hezbollah has lobbed bottle rockets at Israel after they lost the wars they started.

Now Iran thumbs their noses at them because they think no one will do a damn thing.

                          Israel will.

                          You can bet.

And Iran will only sit back and whimper like they have done so many times before.

                          Iran needs change.

                          And it's on it's way.

What help did we receive from Israel in any of our conflicts? If the U.S. feels threatened do they run to Israel to solve the problem for them? If Israel feels so threatened by Iran(and Iran has made it clear that they should feel threatened) why doesn't Israel do something about it? They've bombed Iran in the past, so why is there so much pressure for the U.S. to act while Israel sits back and reaps the benefits? Is it because Israel was founded with a silver spoon after WWII and expects the Western World to still do everything for them? America and Americans are built on a do it yourself attitude, which has given the U.S. a bloody and violent history, but the U.S. has earned everything from its actions including the admiration of other countries(i.e. receiving the statue of liberty from France). If Israel wants to be strong, independent, and safe, they need to do it on their own.

Vready, you need a refresher in history if you are suggesting that the attack on the USS LIberty was a mistake.

The Israelis knew exactly why and what they were attacking. It was a mistake in the sense that they displayed what sort of friend they were. We should have severed all aid to them right then. but the vast jewish american contingent here wouldn't allow it.

Imagine you are a citizen of Florida and the UN comes along and says your land now belongs to the Cubans that have been "displaced" by Castro.

Total U.S. aid to Israel is approximately one-third of the American foreign-aid budget, even though Israel comprises just .001 percent of the world's population and already has one of the world's higher per capita incomes. Indeed, Israel's GNP is higher than the combined GNP of Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, the West Bank and Gaza. With a per capita income of about $14,000, Israel ranks as the sixteenth wealthiest country in the world; Israelis enjoy a higher per capita income than oil-rich Saudi Arabia and are only slightly less well-off than most Western European countries.

Since 1949 the U.S. has given Israel a total of $83.205 billion. The interest costs borne by U.S. tax payers on behalf of Israel are $49.937 billion, thus making the total amount of aid given to Israel since 1949 $133.132 billion. This may mean that U.S. government has given more federal aid to the average Israeli citizen in a given year than it has given to the average American citizen.

U.S. government officials argue that this money is necessary for "moral" reasons-some even say that Israel is a "democracy battling for its very survival." If that were the real reason, however, aid should have been highest during Israel's early years, and would have declined as Israel grew stronger. Yet "the pattern...has been just the opposite." According to Zunes, "99 percent of all U.S. aid to Israel took place after the June 1967 war, when Israel found itself more powerful than any combination of Arab armies...."

Israel has a lot of bankers friends in America. and some probably make and sell sell weapons and wouldn't mind doing a little business. And being in America is much safer than being in Israel, next to Iran. I think Netanyahu should just know that America will do or is doing what's right for Israel if need be. I'm sure Israel has air missile defense capabilities in case of a nuclear strike and if Iran was to do anything stupid they'd be erased off the face of the earth. And the rest is all sowing circle talk.

You are proving my point exactly. Do you even know when Israel was founded, or by who, how, and why? I have nothing against Israeli or Jewish people, but they don't belong there. They founded their state the most hostile place they could, and they expect the rest of the world to bail them out and help the stay secure there. America was founded by the colonists fighting against several races, civilizations, and countries from the eastern sea, the north, the west, the south. We did receive help from the French but that was France's own decision out of fear England would control the Americas. I'm not saying the U.S. should turn a blind a eye, but why do we have to take the lead in solving Israel's problem that they created for themselves? We are tired of wars, economic struggles, and losing our loved ones on a daily basis.

Hey critic, if you truly believe we have 'turned a blind eye to Israel', then you have absolutely no idea of what you are talking about. I'm not even gonna attempt to school ya on everything we have done to give them aid and ensure their security, because I believe you would turn a blind eye on any facts.

Try keeping up with the news.... We have done more Israel than any other nation on earth, and those policies have been ongoing for the last four years.

Oh and by the way how sensitive was it for the idiots in Egypt to rip up the US flag and try to storm our embassy on 9/11? That's what I thought, dolts.

Send all the politicos in Wash.D.C. with dual Israeli-US Citizenships to Israel and cancel their US Status and Passports. this would include the douche bag named John Bolten.Wake Up America, Israels dirty fingerprints are smeared all over the Middle East and have been for over 50 Years.

Marine that sounds nice , but we have a leaderless president that doesn't understand the ramifications of not being diplomatic, possibly WW3 esp. when the world looks to America for leadership Obama turns his back and acts like a temperamental guyyyy. The Jewish State is saying what line have you drawn , date, sanctions aren't working, if Iran doesn't respond to the pleads of the UN where do we go ?and Obama turns his back.

America will be drawn into the war any way our oil comes from that region, Iran said it would hit US targets if it attacked, Russia said it would get involved , Obama has shown no leadership in light of the seriousness of this matter maybe he feels it will go away,America needs to do is something instead of nothing to let the world know where we stand.

America leaderless, unsure, and adrift since 2008 ....

                              Reuters – 14 hrs ago

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia warned Israel and other nations not to attack Iran over its nuclear program, saying the use of force would be disastrous for the Middle East and have consequences far beyond the region, the Interfax news agency reported on Thursday.
"We warn those who are no strangers to military solutions ... that this would be harmful, literally disastrous for regional stability and would set off deep shocks in the security and economic spheres that would reverberate far beyond the boundaries of the Middle East region," Interfax quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov as saying.

Seriously, of the two choices available in this heavily polarized political climate, I'll take the one that stands on the side of the businessperson, the side that believes in American free enterprise which made possible for us to thrive in what earlier generations of Jewish immigrants called "der goldene medina" -- the Golden Land. While many of our Jewish ancestors became Democrats because back then it was the more tolerant of the two parties, if those same people were arriving at our shores today with the intention of pursuing the American dream, they would be planning to vote for Mitt Romney.

What will any of you think the next time, and for many of us the first time, a nuclear weapon is used? The pyscological impact will be enormous on both citizens of various countries and global economies. Thus far the genie has been contained, but some cultures do not share the same sense of the MAD (mutually assured destruction) doctrine that the Cold War cultures did. Terrorism aside, the real question is what will be the global reaction if Iran or any other country for that matter used an offensive nuclear weapon? The difference here is that most are aware of the destructive power, the ramifications of such a weapon and have been dreading it for a life time. It will be a game changer by many orders of magnitude.

The day that any country uses a nuclear weapon on the US will be the last day of its existence. The American public would tolerate no less, and would seek to impeach any president who did not respond with the full might of the military.

On the other hand, it would be far easier for Iran (or any other country) to sell a nuclear weapon to a terrorist group who can then try to smuggle it into the US and detonate it on US soil. While the investigation and manhunt would be the most intense in history, the possibility is that Iran might try to get away with it, figuring they would have deniability.

None whatsoever. Then again, right after 9/11 happened, he crowed about how 9/11 was "good for Israeli" - it "benefitted Israel". Sickening!

Israelis enjoy free education, universal health care, low to 0% home loans and many benefits that are too good for the American tax payers. Get the Israeli lobby out of our country. We need to be addressing the problems of our own people.

Netanyahu and Romney have a business history and are quite friendly. Netanyahu is saber rattling during a critical time in his friend's political campaign. Danny Danon (Israeli Knessett) was on Morning Joe today. He stated the US has not been supportive of Israel. This is not just bluster. It's politically calculated to muddy the waters and to influence the presidential race in Romney's favor.

If there is going to be a war with Iran, there should also be a draft. But this would be a different kind of draft than before. Instead of it being purely random, the sons and daughters of members of Congress, and other elite should have to be first in line--and NO exemptions for any reason. And if you want to fine-tune the policy even further, the sons and daughters of the members of Congress who vote for war should have to be drafted before the offspring of those who vote against it.

America is sick and tired of war--for any reason other than a direct attack on the US, and any politician who gets the US into another war does so at his or her peril.

However they would need to make this a law or constitutional change and it should also be worded that the members of congress children are drafted and sent into combat with others not some easy paper pushing job. At least if you're a super wealthy republican you can simply avoid any draft by doing missionary work in France. Anyone notice none of his sons found it necessary to perform missionary work when there's no draft but Willard had to spend 31 months at it despite his pro Vietnam war stance? Apparently this missionary work is only essential when there's a war on.

It seems that every time there is a blow up in the world the NeoCons get a testosterone rush and send other people's children to war.

If we had a draft you'd be able to hear the Neo-Cons trampling over everyone's heads to get their kids deferments from serving. The thought of their beloved children looking into the business end of an enemy's weapon would be too much for them to handle.

As the proud daughter of a man who was a prisoner of war in a German camp my dad hated war and the thought of sending anyone's child into harms way unnessarily. Most of the NeoCons have never served at all. They have never suffered personal grief in this regard and perhaps that is why it is so easy for them to think of war as a remedy of first resort. It's so easy to be a Chicken Hawk!!
