Too many people on here seem to think that "freedom of speech/expression" means they can behave like douchebags all they want and are somehow immune to any negative consequences whatsoever. Sorry, folks, it just ain't so.

Now, I don't believe Bacile should be put on trial or lynched or anything, but a good tail-kicking from people with more common sense than him would be in order. (Pastor Terry Jones and the entire Fred Phelps crowd have been campaigning for a whuppin' for years now -- I say we elect 'em.) At this point I don't care if Bacile goes into hiding, but he should be made to personally apologize to the families of everyone who was murdered. If he's not an American citizen, I'd have him deported. We've already got more than enough domestic rabble-rousers; we don't need more from other countries causing trouble for us, too.

The Crusades were a reply to Islamic violence in The Holy Lands, specifically the killing of all Christians in Jerusalem and sealing off the city from pilgrims. I'd say war in that case is justified. I don't know that anyone has an answer to your question, but my guess is that very few have been killed in the name of Christ, just as few are killed in the name of Muhammed. People wanting power or land or money have killed and used Christ as a reason, though it was mostly internecine in nature.

Far more people, WAY more people, have been killed for other, more straightforward reasons, like territory. But one underlying factor that always seems to get a pass is atheism. Sad too, since I am an atheist, that in the last century over 100 million people died under atheistic rule. Despots and totalitarians come in all shapes and sizes, religions too. I don't think it advances our discussion to pretend Christianity is somehow evil in order to delude ourselves into thinking that radical Islamists are not our enemy.

In August 2002, Italian police reported that they had disrupted a terrorist plot to destroy a church in Bologna, Italy, which contains a 15th century fresco depicting an image of Muhammad.

Fitna, a film by Dutch politician Geert Wilders which claims the Koran incites violence was met with calls to block and censor the film's showing. Gregorius Nekschot, a Dutch cartoonist collaborator of Theo van Gogh who was arrested on May 13, 2008. His house was searched by ten policemen and his computer and sketch books were confiscated. He was held in jail for interrogation and was made to remove eight cartoons from his website at the request of the public prosecutor for being discriminatory for Muslims. The Netherlands police in a "project hatecrimes" ready to file complaints about cartoons.

In 2010, the New York City Metropolitan Museum of Art quietly withdrew all images of Mohammed from display out of fear of some Muslims who say the images are blasphemous. Kishwar Rizvi, an Islamic art expert at Yale University, said "Museums shouldn't shy away from showing this in a historical context".^[41]

I think the reality here isn't that Israel wants to drag the USA into a war, but that the USA has made statements about the timing of an attack (implied) which varies with what Israel is prepared to do. We want to wait, for what I'm not really sure--maybe to let Iran have nuclear weapons?--and Israel wants to move more rapidly. A good way for the USA to extricate itself from the mess Mr. Obama has made here is to simply say that Iran can not be allowed nuclear weapons, that it is seeking nuclear weapons, and that because of Iran's efforts to conceal their program from the IAEA it would be understandable that any interested nation act on their own timeline.

I am upset with Hillary Clinton's quoted comment (different article) that condemned the person who made the video. Where was the condemnation of deliberate murder. It's safe to say that most religion's ultimate goal is to be the ONE TRUE religion...That said, I've attended services to most Christian denomonations, Jewish, Mormon (Christian?) and a few others throughout my life. The one thing I noticed is; there are very few differences. Aside from the expected conduct and the strict tenates of some religions there really are no substantial differences below who the "Prophet" of that particular sect is, and his story.
According to the Bible, the Tora and the Karan, the basics of the Ten Commandments (the Christian version) are adhered to. The major difference in most cases is; the adherance is directed to follower's treatment of other followers, and not "infidels". Christian religions tend to be the same way, although, not necessarily in the US because of our inherant belief in religious freedom, of course that only applies to areas where one religion does not dominate an entire community.
Ignorance and the manipulation of the interpretations is what gets people into trouble, and THAT is what is going on with the Muslim religion. Someone mentioned earlier in this discussion that before these three religions, Wars were fought for old fashioned greed and expansion." Well, most wars now are still fought for the same reason.
The difference; now the dictators and the greedy fight under the guise of religion. Bin Laden targetted the US, not because of any legitimate religious reason, but for "old fashioned" vengeance. He used the Muslim religion to manipulate Saudi, Afghan, Yemenese, Iranian and Iraqi Muslims to do his bidding.

Your analogy leaves out one important aspect ... the line is not drawn at yelling fire in a crowded theatre, but FALSELY yelling fire. It is not a crime to yell fire if there is indeed one present, or if one believes that that is.

Maybe you misunderstood my point... Violence caused by ANY religion is wrong and anathema to the most basic tenets of the major religions (Judiasm, Christianity and Islam). Yes, all three holy books sometimes refer to using violence in certain situations but those, like some of the US's older laws, really don't/shouldn't apply in our "civilized" society.

All the emphasis in this instance is being put on "not offending" Muslims, yet it sometimes takes very little TO offend some of them. A woman in Iraq wants to marry the man she loves? Offended! A man in Egypt is gay? Offended! Non-Muslims want to build a place of worship in Afghanistan? Offended! Muslims and non-Muslims suggest that Islam join the modern world? Offended! I for one despise being lumped in with the Christian zealots who preach hate to certain people and belief systems (such as picketing at funerals, sporting events, anywhere they can). If you look at religions, they are universally nonviolent. It is only those radicals who take the words and use them for their own agendas, thus creating animosity toward religious people everywhere.
